As a brazilian 21 year old, it's astonishing to see how well rated Doctor Sócrates is, wow! I asked my father how good Socrates was, he said he was legendary. It's surprising to see that many foreigners talking abt him. I remember the day after Socrates died, I was 8 years old and Corinthians won the Brazilian Championship, I heard that name so many times that day, noticed the respect, the grief that was in that day, I couldn't understand a thing, I was just a little boy. I am starting to understand who was Doctor Socrates! Once again, thank you for the video about him, and all the other brazilians! I almost cried seeing Romário's video
I was a 15-year old teenager football enthusiast and in the 1982 World Cup finals first saw Socrates. When they say this man was underrated that's an understatement this man was one of the midfield generals of all time his ball control able to hold a ball score goals he was absolutely world class. He is Hall of Fame material all the way. It is disheartening that Socrates name is not mentioned with the likes of Pele, Garrincha,Revelino,Zico. Socrates was one of the greatest midfielders of all time. Period.
I met Sócrates twice. First in Brazil in October 1982 after the WC in Spain during a "Study Trip of Brazilian Football" with a swedish group. Amazing person.Still have the photo of us two after the training session with Corinthians in São Paulo. The year after, we met again at the "Hotel Fars Hatt" in Gothenburg, Sweden, on June 21st while Brazil were on a "European Tour" with their new headcoach, Carlos Alberto Parreira. Brazil draw against Sweden on their final match of this tour, 3-3. And yes, I got my photo of him and me in Brazil signed. William from Sweden
I was 12 years old when New Zealand qualified for our first ever World Cup in 1982 and we drew Brazils group. That Brazil team was wonderful to watch and Socrates was a big part of that.

I was lucky enough to watch Socrates play football in Spain 82 with the great Brazilian team of the time. Socrates was a giant at midfield. Fantastic with the ball, dribbling, passing, shooting and heading. U name it, he done it all. Every time I talk about that team, Brazil 82, Socrates name always comes in second behind me one of the best Brazilian N. 10s ever, Zico. Glad I watched this video cos I didn’t know or ever bother to find out what happened to Socrates after he left Italy. Thanks and keep up the good work
Here we are again, with a banger! I've heard of Socrates becouse my father had told me that he had a degree in medicine. What a crazy thing to hear in such a context.
+ Giacomo Grosso It was not unusual back then. Just the Honduran national team of 1982 had three players with university degrees: Jaime Villegas (Defender), Salomon Nazer (GK and a Dr) and Porfirio Betancourt (forward) and almost all graduated at least HS. Nowadays, soccer there is a purely working class endeavor and most don't even graduate HS. Drastic decline.

A combination of a philosopher, a football player, a medical doctor/pediatrician, a revolutionary Socrates epitomized perhaps the best perfect human being. Granted he enjoyed life a bit too much but the best role model I count on. Forever Socrates❤
When he was alive he became a world star of football not even playing in Europe.Let me remind you at that time in 80's no TV was showing Brasilian league games. It was just pictures in the news magazines. He could be seen only on the world cup 1982 for the first time and then 1986 world cup.Dr.Socrates was a living legend at that time already. No matter which team you are supporting, no matter what nation you are Dr. Socrates was your favor player.Elegant, smart and with that Brasilian magic when he touch the ball.He was an inspiration for every kid at that time to go out on the street and play so one day would be like him.God took him away from us too fast but his image is imprinted in my memory till I die.Thank you!!! I'm from UAE, never been to Brazil but growing up in the 80's Socrates was one of the very first few names I got to know as football superstars (beside Zico & Maradona), I vividly remember watching him in world cup 1986 live on tv and later watched Brazil matches in world cup 1982 on VHS tapes....Socrates is very will known in our region specially among my generation and people need to know during that time not many of them used to played abroad and legends like him and Zico played outside Brazil only toward the end of their career as Brazil and south american football in general was very competitive and there was no huge contracts offered from outside the continent compared to our current time.

To give some contest, Corinthians at the time wasn't nearly as big as it is nowadays. They had never been National champions (their first was in 1990) and that First paulista title Sócrates won with them was their First title in more than 20 years. Even thogh Corinthians was the most popular club, It was considered not to be on the same level as the other giants of the state (santos, são Paulo and palmeiras)

Hoje em títulos nacionais o Corinthians já e maior que santos, SPFC, cruzeiro, Grêmio, internacional, Atlético MG, Vasco, Botafogo, Fluminense, clubes que ganharam antes que o Corinthians. @@maxcomo9197 They were also one of the "greatest" teams with tendency to horrible defensive mistakes like against Italy in 1982. You can't call that "bad luck" (Cerezo's sloppy back pass and non-existent marking on Rossi's third goal...it was schoolboy defending). Luck is when you hit the bar or post with the ball (Brazil vs Argentina 1990) or penalties (Mexico 86 Brazil vs France). To be fair, penalties are a test of skill and nerve, not really luck.
Socrates ... "anyone who runs doesn't think". I daresay he might have struggled with managers of the modern game. Yet in a far more physical era he seemed able to create magic while never leaving cruise control.

In the UK the term 'Beautiful Game', is a reference to this team. Not the ugly Italian team that hacked it's way to victory in the final.
@@ricf9592 don’t be silly… brasil had no defense, poor goalkeeper… the games of italy against argentina, brasil, poland and germany (for the final i was in spain) were masterpieces…
and italy had zoff, scirea, antognoni, conti, tardelli and rossi… not bad at all…
Also the 98 squad
Bro....their 1970 world cup winning team was the greatest football team that ever graced our planet. No other team be it Brazil or any other nation can come near the 1970 team. The 1970 final vs Italy had the score line of 4-1 and all four goals were masterpieces...Pele, Jairzinho, Rivalino and Carlos Alberto were the scorers.
@@frankpfau9054 , you forgot to mention Claudio Gentile, that guy that ripped Zico’s jersey.
Never forgotten by my generation....including Zico, Junior, Eder, Falcao... I cried when they lost that match ( remember watching with my siblings, Dad )
Totally agree , the commentator of these videos is convinced the greatest players ever are messi & Ronaldo , he thinks football began then
As a non player, I have grown to appreciate and love this extraordinary player. I was introduced to the game by a fellow pilot, a great player himself who among others was in inspired by the Socrates.
Dr Sócrates was part of the 2nd best Brazilian squad ever, for many. Just like The Netherlands' 74 campaign, Brazil's 82 lost was a football sin!!!!
The Italian team of.82 was more superior with Baresi , Bergomi, Gentile, Altobello, Massaro and Paolo rossi was brazils nightmare
@@glamproperty perhaps both of you can celebrate the greatness of both teams - divided only by luck of football that divides champions and runners up
No. I'm Brazilian but the 82 squad was just a mess. They weren't really focused and our defense was trash.
@@andarilho_31 stop making excuses
Holy. He was way more than just a legendary football player. I'm not even brazilian but hearing this made me proud. I can't even describe how I'm feeling right now.
Easily one of the greatest players of all time. His goal against Italy in the 1982 World Cup is just magical, the best goal I have ever seen. Amen.
I remember this player and Zico growing up as a kid here in England, they were both great players!
Who can forget Dr. Socrates? I grew up hearing from this guy all the time.
One of the most gifted, honest and intelligent players I have ever had the pleasure to watch and follow. He was just magnificent, and maybe one of the greatest ever. RIP Sócrates, you gave us so much, thank you: 👍👌👏❤❤❤❤
Wow, what a video. I loved watching Socrates in 1982, but there's so much more to his life that I didn't know about. Thank you.
One of the top player on the field that had influence outside the field. Great choice you made !!
thanks!
All that he accomplished on the pitch pales in comparison to his efforts to topple the dictatorship
This man has not been forgotten by me. Wonderful player.
Part of the greatest footballing side never to lift the World Cup. Socrates was aptly named. A highly intelligent individual, a fantastic player. *RIP*
Everytime I asked my Dad who was the best player back in days he always mention Socrates in his top lists
For my dad, he would always mention “Zico, Garrincha, Pele” he lived in Brazil for a while and always watched the games at Maracanã, so he had a slight bias lol, wish I asked my dad more, he’s dead now
@@qstal I am sorry for your loss. I lost my dad 2 years ago too but since a young age, we always talked about soccer since we both played soccer. He always says Maradona is a way better player than Pele though lol
same, man
@@zackmack7145 🙏🏼🙌🏼 RIP 🇦🇷 ⚽️
I learned about Socrates through fifa draft 18 lol
Wow! Amazing and very moving film. Great work. I was always a fan of Socrates on the field, but did not know of his personal life. Thank you for sharing.
Obrigado pelo vídeo! Bom ver um documentarista português dando a opinião do futebol luso-brasileiro e latino pra o público internacional
You've wonderfully documented the life of this legend. Thank you ❤️✌🏽
I was lucky enough to watch Socrates play football in Spain 82 with the great Brazilian team of the time.
Thanks and keep up the good work
My dad always told me Socrates would play as if he had eyes in the back of his head. A master of the heel pass.
Here we are again, with a banger! I've heard of Socrates becouse my father had told me that he had a degree in medicine. What a crazy thing to hear in such a context.
Been a while since I replied to one of your comments ahah, just popped back to say hi
Usual social media idiots who churn out the word 'underrated' for someone they know nothing about, but millions do & appreciated. Underrated my arse.
I was born on 2005, and I am well aware of him. My father and I both admire him a lot as he was a doctor, just as my father. My were just overwhelmed by the fact that how a person could be both a doctor and a footballer, not to mention one of the best of all time.
RIP Doctor Socrates
My favourite players are tall attacking midfielders who have the magnificent vision to progress the play via their unique skills to unlock their powers. The golden heel was such a brilliant solution.
Rest in Power
i Support SaoPaulo and hate corinthians with my gut. but Socrates made me cry more about what he represent then any player from the team i support ever will. Rest in Peace Doctor
The ending to his life us almost biblical. Died on the Sunday when they were champions just as he wished....
It's so heartwarming

(: Yes ... Very Much ... 😢
Only underrated by people who don't know football. Legend as a player and a person.
He has never been forgotten... As a Turkish, i present you the one of the best youtube-era sports channel, most of the staff had been all on the biggest TV channels in Turkiye once, named after the phenomenon @SocratesDergi
Thank you for posting this video. He was an amazing person and while football is a great sport, helping to rid his country of a dictatorship is incredible!
I'm from country of Georgia and I admired Brazil of 82-86 and best of them all Socrates!
I remember in 1980s he was one of my favorite stars through his penalty kicks. He didn’t go far away from the ball before hit it. It was the thing back then.
He ain’t forgotten and never will by the True football fans
One of the best and most elegant Players I’ve seen
What a Joy to watch the Doctor
That's incredible how Dr Soccer had wished his death to be on a specified day with a certain criteria and it coming to pass. Another master piece brother and what stands you out from the rest of the you tube artists in the beautiful game is your soothing commentary with emotional passion! Like Socrates you are one of the greats of their chosen arts and craft.
Great video!!
Socrates, another Brazilian giant that the world loved to watch play!
Such a sad end, that 82 Brazil side wow just wow, watched them lose to Italy in a crowded pub in Edinburgh, everyone upset at the final whistle, we will never see their like again, so much talent and above them all loomed Socrates, RIP Doutor.
Yes yes yes, another forgotten hero and absolute legend, important & inspiring in way more ways than one 👌😉🎩 beautiful work.
Defently not forgotten. What a legend.
Eterno Dr Sócrates
you're covering all my legends, making me emotional lol. Viva Socrates
I'm happy man, hope you enjoy these videos for a long time
It is good and fair to talk more about him. When I was a child he was very known in my country , Cameroon, between the 80's and the 90's; between 1986 Mexico world cup and Italy world cup.
People said Spain's Xavi was the world's best ever no 8.....I ask them to take a look at the Great SOCRATES.⚽🇧🇷👍
No way wass Xavi as good as Dr Socrates
I thought he chose to be a footballer because his dad said that he could practice medicine after his football career but he couldn't do it the other way around.
Beautiful video! Love this guy
There's one marvelous player, Dejan Petković "Rambo", immortal in Brazil, praised by Zico & Zagalo as "Pechi maravilhoso".... There's a movie about his life and career named "O gringo" (2011), try to look it up - you will not regret it 😉🎩. Beautiful man, brilliant player, and truly inspiring story in so many various ways.

Socrates was a great player and his teammates it's just a picture didn't come out for them they made the games look so beautiful and the way that Socrates would finish off a move was Grace grateful and beautiful
Awesome video bro!.... Segio Busquets is another underrated player.
He was my favourite player when I was a kid growing up in Scotland.
Great player ...no doubt. and
more importantly a exceptional human being .
Of course Socrates is always remembered for football fans Worldwide, the best team of those days Brazil 82 and his grand Captain: Sampaio de Souza💪 "HONOR A QUIEN HONOR MERECE"

You finally did him. Thank you!!
And it was a beautiful tribute.
no worries man!
He certainly hasn’t been forgotten where I live, very close to the Corinthian Casuals football club in Tolworth, Greater London. The club that inspired the creation of Corinthians of Sao Paolo and a Mecca for their fans, including the great man himself who came to play for them on a visit.
a Brazilian legend who lived up to his Greek namesake! Heroic!
Brilliant video! Thank you for creating and sharing.
I would never say Socrates was underrated,, over here in Europe hes one of the best players of that famous great Team,,
Love from Ireland.
I remember him. FIFA world cup 1982 & 1986.
RIP the doctor
What a Man, what a life! Socrétes lives on!
In 1982 on my 14th birthday I got my own TV and ghetto blaster for my bedroom The world cup was on and I watched Brazil vs Scotland Brazil won 4 v 1 and I saw Socrates for the 1st time wow he blew me away in fact that team with Eder Zico Falcao Junior et al They didn't win the competition Italy did But with Socrates as skipper this was the best Brazil team since 1970 I played up to county level and tried to play as Socrates did I managed a few moves and I took the free kicks for my school team my home town team and county wasn't too bad but its hard to imitate a genius They were simply the greatest team I'd ever seen and they still are Rest in peace Socrates and Paolo Rossi too ❤️🥅⚽🍀📽️🎶
A Gem of Football! And Brazil truly is the Heart of football
great video!
He had a signature back heel pass. He was a genius. He was never underrated.
One of my greatest players fully composed fluid midfielder mesmerising tactician scorer to-date even that team of his era 1980s is greatest Brazilian team ever
Sócrates was one of the 3 guys who make the difference

One of the brilliant players in Brazil's magical World Cup team in 1982. Rest in peace Socrates we will always remember you.
The Brasil team that played at the World Cup in Spain in 1982 was arguably one of the greatest ever- just check out all their goals from that tournament and be amazed. Be warned tho, you may find it hard to watch today's rubbish football and so called 'stars' after seeing this.
The greatest team never to win the world cup in mho .
Technically very brilliant ,Brazil defeated the great maradona and Argentina in quarter final, the best team of 1982 world cup, Socrates was a great player.
One of my favourite players of all time. It was Socrates and Brazil why I love football.
Socrates ... "anyone who runs doesn't think". I daresay he might have struggled with managers of the modern game. Yet in a far more physical era he seemed able to create magic while never leaving cruise control.
Very well said man !
I am Brazilian and definitely, I can say: It is one of the best biographies ever made. A masterpiece. Cheers from Brazil. Go, Corinthians. Sócrates is unique!
