An interesting nugget: In the game (Cyberpunk 2077), you can find his apartment building and follow the exact same path he takes to school. Every single landmark he passes and place he goes to is reachable, except the school itself, which is inside the Arasaka building.
Pretty funny how this anime basically brought the game back and was so good they put stuff from it into the game like Easter eggs or now there pics of the characters on the perk systems but now we get to go on the emotional roller coaster again lol
Video game tv shows have been doing well. Especially the animated ones but mainly when they take the world and don’t focus on the plot. Like with Arcane and League of Legends and now this 😅

Edgerunners was a surprise for sure, after I found out trigger was going to animate it I knew I had to see it. The cyberpunk genre has always been a great critic on society, capitalism, bureaucracy, etc. I feel like they really nailed down what a late stage capitalist society would be like in 50 years time.
Unfortunately the insurance part is pretty close already.
Yeah, pretty much the worst version of capitalism
The worst part is, that the genre have been predicting the same future since the 60s.
Facism not Capitalism...Corporate wars and Corporations are gov, and have monopolies...that's Facism, not Capitalism. I know stating this makes it seem like I'm defending Capitalism. But people need to distinguish between these types of societies. That way they can see the change occur. Similar to the current US. People call it Capitalism, but I don't see it. We literally have Super Packs and Lobbying that write bills to support large Corporation.
A good example is Disney. Where Copyright laws do NOT last long. Gov refuses to fix that issue with the system, because there's no need. Disney just Lobbying US gov to extend their copyrights. The longest it can last is 98 years, under very specific circumstances (multiple extensions and only before 1978). Yet Disney was founded 100 years ago. If you invent the cure for cancer it can only last for your lifetime. Yet Walt Disney died at 1966. Long story short this is one of many examples of Facism NOT Capitalism.

The music choices in this show are so good! If you can, pay attention to the lyrics on the songs, they usually reflect the scene you're watching. And as a bonus, they used songs that are in the game and audible through the in-game radio stations

Actually got me to reinstall the game and give it another go after the rough launch. Happy to report it's great now!
bugs were somwhat fixed 1-2 years ago and with dogtown DLC the game is insane soo good

Idk how far along you guys are, but Cyberpunk has a ton of slang that could use some explanation.
Choom / choomba / choombata = friend in varied forms.
Eddies = money, slang for Euro dollars.
Preem = premium.
Nova = awesome / cool.
Just to name a few.
The thing David was watching is called a BD, a brain dance. Basicslly it records the experiences of an individual and lets somebody relive them.
Also, what happened with the guy at the beginning, Lt. Norris, was a Cyberpsycho. Basically when you have too many implants it fucks with your head, until it snaps. Things like stress and excessive cyberware use can accelerate the process.

The better of a person you are in both your actions and your mental behavior the stronger that you can resist The mental degradation and the more that you can Enhance your body. The key is never losing what makes you human. In the end remembering what it means to be human is the key to surviving.

Everything in the show is from the game so it’s very fun to see locations/abilities/gear that you’ve played with before, or seeing something new in this and trying it out in-game. Character cameos, the OST being your cars radio, not to mention the cool lingo like “choom” (buddy), and “nova” (cool) Such an incredible world, night city is one of the best settings in media
When Davids legs stopped shaking the city signed up for one hell of a ride ! 😎

FYI The first guy was under Cyberpsychosis which is when you get too many implants and you're brain is not able to manage the stress of it. There are medicines that help you manage it but as soon as you don't have access to those drugs you're done. Generally when you reach that level you either fry you brain and die or go into a frenzy attacking everything in sight: which is called Cyberpsychosis.
Different people have different levels of resistance to cyberware and cyberpsychosis, so there are some who can manage to sort of "focus" that fury towards some sort of objective. But it is still a frenzy and you can be their best friend and still get killed just because your between the psycho and his objective.
Anyway enjoy the ride, it's gonna be a wild one.

cyberpunk as a genre is meant to make us question who we are. who we are as a person, who we are as a species, and who we are as a society. The world of cyberpunk 2077 is supposed to show a dystopian side of society where the world runs off capitalism and consumerism. money and strength are the only thing valued. And it begs the question of do we as humans really have the ability to choose, or is choice an illusion and its the circumstances of our environment and the situations we endure that choose for us.

17:28 Theoretically there is nothing preventing you from building on the skills you download. I also imagine that if you have two people, one who downloaded their fighting skills this morning, and one who downloaded it 5 years ago and has been dedicatedly practicing those skills sparring/fighting, that the latter will likely win 9 times out of 10.
But couldn’t I have downloaded an updated software that would be superior to the version 5 years ago 🤔
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 Maybe, however in martial arts there is still a difference between knowing how to perform a move and actually being well practiced in it. The old Bruce Lee quote "I fear not the man who has practiced 10,000 kicks once, but I fear the man who has practiced one kick 10,000 times."
Drilling a move into your muscle memory, adjusted for your own personal size, weight, ect would not be something you could just slot in.
That is assuming they don't just go with the Apple method of having updates sabotage their product to force you to pay them for better products rather than actually trying to make the best product.

To sort of help you familiarize yourself with the world of Cyberpunk, I will attempt to explain the opening scene.
The opening scene of this episode displays a phenomenon known as Cyberpsychosis.
Basically, in the world of Cyberpunk 2077, it’s extremely common for people to have cybernetic enhancements or augmentations. These can range from simple things like replacing their eyeballs with cybernetic ones, or replacing entire entire limbs with bionic ones. Several people even go so far as to replace their internal organs with cybernetic ones.
When a person installs too many cybernetic enhancements unto their body, or even overuses the simple ones, their mind can’t really tell the difference between what’s part of the original body and what isn’t. This leads to the person experiencing a variety of mental problems such as personality disorders and anxiety issues. Many people suffering from Cyberpsychosis end up losing their sense of self, and become unpredictable and violent. They stop being able to remember who they are as a person and can’t hold a solid grip on the present moment.
It’s extremely sad and even horrifying in a way. But I hope this information helps.

kind of a cool tidbit of info about the cyberpunk universe. Canonically Night City grew out of the the city of Morro bay, CA after they had a war with the neighboring city of San Luis Obispo.

Honestly you mentioning the two shows being neck and neck definitely made me realize Castlevania and Edgerunners ARE both at the same level for me or at least close. In the category of in the running for best show I'd seen that year respectively

I've really been meaning to getting around to playing Cyberpunk, This anime has really been making me want to finally upgrade my GPU lol. If only I was a shithead Corpo, then I'd have the eddies for a 4090
Edit: You guys are dead on about the different analogues of what upgrades and cyberware you can have, I guess a good analogue would be how its legal to own a glock, but it isn't generally legal to own a F-22. Shows like this and Ghost in the Shell really make me think about those questions you two were talking about, the questions of life over profit, and how tech will keep changing us over time. It's changed us a lot as it is, we are for sure in a pre-cyberpunk dystopia right now. I hope to stick around long enough to see how that plays out, and hopefully try to help make things better.

Fun fact: A BD in Cyberpunk is like a downloadable experience! Unlike VR or something that just has visuals, a BD quite literally allows an individual to experience EVERYTHING that happens from the point of view of the subject of the BD. Hence, at the beginning D was experiencing what that "Cyberpsycho" was experiencing and thus was experiencing both the murdering and the guy's death firsthand.

Welcome to Night City. An independent city sandwiched between North and South California. A place where Greed has run rampant and Corporations rule the city with their own private military companies while the gangs rule the streets.
Healthcare has become so privatised that it's a borderline military, if you're not paying, you're treated as a potential threat, and they have the gear to match.
Cyberware is so mainstream that everybody has communications built into their head but Cyberware is like a drug, Don't over do it or you'll slip.
Hope you both enjoy it that said for me, I have to mute the soundtrack in places because of the memories associated with the in-game events which are not always positive and at times hard to deal with but yeah it put the game back on an excellent come back the fact Studio Trigger used the interface from the game and all the locations are known to me really impressed me the time I watched it as others have stated this is going to be a rough ride towards the end, but it is damn well done and quite a bit of dark humour in there.
Oh no. We’ve heard some of the songs are really hard hitting. Especially in episode 2
Regarding sports: yes, in this world natural talent while still a very important part of any competition is simply not enough to carry you even to top 10. Replaced limbs, muscle tissue, bones, blood, lungs - those what a real winners are packing. So you need to be not only capable yourself, but also able to support alot of chrome (cyberware modifications).

So trauma team is basically is a "golden/special" insurance. Basically if they payed a they will give top quality of rescue and medical help. Sadly mostly people with a lot money can afford it so most common people get absolutely crapped on. Corpo is pretty much here is bit different to how real world works, Especially stuff like army, Weapons and what they run.
