Diễm Quỳnh Ngô I've studied French, Spanish, and Japanese along with learning a few words in some other languages from my friends. I always have good pronunciation, but tonal languages are so hard. My Vietnamese friend tried to teach me a few words, but my mouth just couldn't pronounce them!
I'm from the philippines, my language is kapampangán and we use diacritcal marks too because the kapampangán language is kinda lacks of vocabulary to the point that every one word has 2 or 3 or more meanings depending on accent, tones and pronunciation and glottal stops. I don't know how to write diacritcal marks and here i am in a "for vietnamese pronunciation only" channel lol.
The alphabet and characters you see are called ‘Chữ Quốc Ngữ’ or ‘National Script’ which was instituted in 1620s by Alexandre de Rhodes and his fellow Jesuit missionaries. The writing system is based on Spanish, Portuguese, French, and Vulgate Latin to express Vietnamese sounds, and we apparently have a Romanized writing script. The national script of Vietnam was not widely used until 1880s when the French colony was completely established in entire Vietnam. Before that, we used Chinese characters and Chinese-based Nom characters. After 1945, Chinese script was completely demolished and got replaced by Latin script. Alexandre de Rhodes is entitled in Vietnam as the father of modern Vietnamese script.
Doron Yaniv We used to have “Chữ Nôm” or Chinese-based scripts to write. However, the Chữ Nôm was even more sophisticated than Han Chinese scripts, so it was uncommon among peasants. I believe the Latinized writing is a great advance to simplify the language, and the illiteracy is rather low in Vietnam.

you must be able to tell if you listen close. Just like in English you put stress or no stress on words to make differences in the meaning of a sentence.IE. were you out?(question)/WERE you out (interrogation like). It's just that in many Asian languages you do it to every single word
Thai speakers here, it's also hard for me to distinguish in the first place. The following tone marks are almost the same ̃ & ́ but the last one has rising tone + pronounce shorter while the first one (ngã) has the same sound as Southern-Thai dialect. It's ok for me if we talk about pronunciation. By the way, a lot of practice would help me familiarize myself easily.

I have to admit that after I watched this video and went back to studying Mandarin, I started to make the words sound like vietnamese :P Putting that aside, I really like the challenge of the Vietnamese Language, since the writting might seem obvious to languages based on latin alphabet, but it's very different non the less. The tones in particular are quite challenging - As you know by what I said I learn Mandarin with it's tonal based speach, but in Mandarin the tones are very self explenatory in how they are written. In vietnamese, I had NO idea how to pronounce them until I watched this video, because unlike in Mandarin, the tones don't really pass on exactly how they are to be pronounced, especially the last diacritical mark. Still, I do have to admit that it has it's simplar parts, like the fact it is based on Latin Alphabet allows me to get started more easily, although sometimes the chinese characters in Vietnamese - the "Chữ Nôm" - does help a little, like how it helped me pronounce the name Nguyễn correctly. WIth that said, thanks for the lesson, I might come and study Vietnamese more :)
Vietnamese call the letter Q "quy" not "cu", if read as "cu", it means sensitive parts :)))) And the letter Y reads as "i dài" or just reads like the letter "i". We can distinguish the letter i and y by saying it is short or long. According to my first grade teacher, the letter Y has to be read longer than the letter i, but actually it doesn't make any difference :)

FUN FACT: Thanh sắc and thanh nặng are actually two tones, depending if the syllable ends in a stopping consonant (-t, -p, -c, -ch) or nasal consonants (-n, -m, -ng, -nh). With stopping consonants these two sounds get a different pitch, still similar but higher!
mã and má sound the same to me but im not even learning vietnamese, im learning korean and japanese which are both toneless languages ( japanese does have a thing called pitch accent though but u can live without it) and im just here because my curiosity led me to researching mandarin and vietnamese

I use very simple and free software for now. I may invest in better software later. The video editing software is Windows Live Movie Maker. I also use Inkscape for creating images for the videos.
Hey you idiot, Vietnamese is a wonderful language and has nothing negative about it, so why don’t you ease off, as there are people who like, speak and are Vietnamese. if you are Vietnamese , that’s just even a bigger disgrace.
The ad of this clip pronounced the words " mã" and " mả" wrongly. When you say " Mả" , your tone goes up shortly then go down abruptly , while when you pronounced " mã", the tone goes up then stay up with longer sound, soften to the end. Many native Vietnamese speakers also pronounce these words wrongly. Some because they have a habit to pronounce wrongly like that due to their specific local accents. These people can't even pronounce them right even if they try. Some can pronounce them right, but they'd rather keep it simple by pronounce the words in a lazy way. Vietnamese language is not easy, but not that hard to study to get a basis level of proficiency in daily conversation. However , ít's extremely hard to master the Vietnamese language, as many of the native speakers are having a very low level of Vietnamese.at the moment despite growing up studying the language ( especially in the last few decades under the reign of the Vn communist). Only a small portion of the Vietnamese population can speak and write the language decently. Even the Vietnamese who have college degrees would write Vietnamese poorly with many grammatical errors and spelling mistakes, let alone construct a paragraph well enough.

You can type those letter by using a non Vietnamese alphabet letters such as w,f,j and type them together with the letter To type those letters on the keyboard: Ă, Ơ, Ư and etc type the letter A or O or U with W Â, Ô and etc type the same letter twice Á, Ó and ect type with S ất the end of the letter À, Ờ and etc type with F at the end of the letter Ạ, and etc type with J at the end of the letter à and ect type with X ất the end of the letter Hope that’ll help!!!

That's right. Initial consonants D and Gi are pronounced the same--/Z/ by northerners and /Y/ by southerners. For example, Da (skin) and Gia (house/home) are both pronounced /ZAH/ by northerners and /YAH/ by southerners. Similarly Di & Gi /ZEE/ or /YEE/. Note that initial G by itself, not Gi, sounds like /G/ in girl, as spoken by both northerners and southerners. Ga /GAH/, gỗ /GOH/, gù /GOO/. When followed by vowels e or i, use gh instead of g: ghe /GARE/, ghi /G-EE/ (not /JEE/).

It's really an old-fashioned way to pronounce the alphabet. In decade 21st we don't say B like "be",it's like BUR in hamburger and so on... Sorry but most of the words were wrongly pronounced.
I like the old-fashioned way. Maybe I should have mentioned the "new" way, too. I think someday Vietnam will switch back to the old-fashioned way, and rename Ho Chi Minh city as Saigon.

I'm not trying to be impolite or anything. Your accent just sounds unnatural to me,especially the tones. It's like you are pronouncing letters in the northern way but with southern tones. Why didn't you make this video entirely in your southern accent from the very beginning, which would be much less ambiguous for foreigners?
Hanoi accent is not the pure Northern accent. There's nothing called pure Northern accent. And Hanoi accent is not accurate. I know many province where people pronounces more accurate than Hanoi's people.
I don't know where you find the pronoun letter "Bb", but I think it should be pronouns "Bờ" instead of "Bê" ( If u can read this, can u tell me where i, wrong, My English is sucks)

it's very interesting. Very difficult Asian languages with Latin alphabet like Tiếng Việt (Vietnamese) are very easy

Gosh Vietnamese tones is so hard to tell the difference, even for a Chinese native speaker. There are 5 tones in mandarin Chinese
Tones are so hard, I can easily hear the difference but my mouth just can’t say it. 👁👄👁

Why do I not hear any difference between the ma words? Can anyone advice what to focus on?
The ad of this clip pronounced the words " mã" and " mả" wrongly. When you say " Mả" , your tone goes up shortly then go down abruptly , while when you pronounced " mã", the tone goes up then stay up with longer sound, soften to the end.
Many native Vietnamese speakers also pronounce these words wrongly. Some because they have a habit to pronounce wrongly like that due to their specific local accents. These people can't even pronounce them right even if they try. Some can pronounce them right, but they'd rather keep it simple by pronounce the words in a lazy way.
Vietnamese language is not easy, but not that hard to study to get a basis level of proficiency in daily conversation.
However , ít's extremely hard to master the Vietnamese language, as many of the native speakers are having a very low level of Vietnamese.at the moment despite growing up studying the language ( especially in the last few decades under the reign of the Vn communist). Only a small portion of the Vietnamese population can speak and write the language decently. Even the Vietnamese who have college degrees would write Vietnamese poorly with many grammatical errors and spelling mistakes, let alone construct a paragraph well enough.

Sounds a little like Mandarin, especially for the word "ma", in Mandarin " ma" word can have different meanings depending on the tone you use.

I have a question, how come on the alphabet there’s only A, ă, â. So why when I’m on the Vietnamese keyboard, there are other letters like ẵ,ã, ằ, ắ, ẳ, etc
You can type those letter by using a non Vietnamese alphabet letters such as w,f,j and type them together with the letter
To type those letters on the keyboard:
Ă, Ơ, Ư and etc type the letter A or O or U with W
Â, Ô and etc type the same letter twice
Á, Ó and ect type with S ất the end of the letter
À, Ờ and etc type with F at the end of the letter
Ạ, and etc type with J at the end of the letter
à and ect type with X ất the end of the letter

He's a 1954 Northerner. He or his parents moved to the South in 1954 so his accent is between North and South.

That's right. Initial consonants D and Gi are pronounced the same--/Z/ by northerners and /Y/ by southerners.
For example, Da (skin) and Gia (house/home) are both pronounced /ZAH/ by northerners and /YAH/ by southerners. Similarly Di & Gi /ZEE/ or /YEE/.
Note that initial G by itself, not Gi, sounds like /G/ in girl, as spoken by both northerners and southerners. Ga /GAH/, gỗ /GOH/, gù /GOO/. When followed by vowels e or i, use gh instead of g: ghe /GARE/, ghi /G-EE/ (not /JEE/).

It's really an old-fashioned way to pronounce the alphabet. In decade 21st we don't say B like "be",it's like BUR in hamburger and so on...
Sorry but most of the words were wrongly pronounced.
I like the old-fashioned way. Maybe I should have mentioned the "new" way, too. I think someday Vietnam will switch back to the old-fashioned way, and rename Ho Chi Minh city as Saigon.

Your accent is not purely Northern for sure. It sounds like some guys from the south trying hard to sound Northern.
So what is pure northern? Ha Noi accent? Yes, I was born in the south to northern Vietnamese parents. I speak the southern accent because my friends and schoolmates spoke it. Nothing in this world is perfect.
I'm not trying to be impolite or anything. Your accent just sounds unnatural to me,especially the tones. It's like you are pronouncing letters in the northern way but with southern tones. Why didn't you make this video entirely in your southern accent from the very beginning, which would be much less ambiguous for foreigners?

Hanoi accent is not the pure Northern accent. There's nothing called pure Northern accent. And Hanoi accent is not accurate. I know many province where people pronounces more accurate than Hanoi's people.
