Thank you! I followed your video step by step last night changing out my brake pads on my XC90. Took me a total of about 45 minutes to change both rear pads once I got going. I’m back on the road good as new! 🎉
Glad I was able to help!
I'm not sure what the electrical connectors are like on the SPA Volvo parking brake but on the older generation XC60, it's easy to wind back the motor using a 9V battery and a couple of wires with spade connectors on the ends. Saves having to split the motor from the caliper as you really should change the o ring if you do that
Volvo dealer ship in Sweden take almost 600dollar to change brake pads front and rear.. Thank you for the vid now i can do it myself
Happy to help!
One of the best DIY videos I have ever seen! Good job and thank you!
Thanks !!
Thanks Tommy. Your video was excellent. I've just bought a used 2016 XC90 after trading a 2007 XC90 and I'm well aware of how expensive it is to have brake pads replaced. The one point I would raise is my Volvo dealer always recommends replace the disc at the same time, which I don't agree with. I've been able to check disc wear by feeling for the groove on the outer edge of the disc and if it' not deep, I leave that disc in. Thanks again.
Great to hear! Good call on the rotor. I feel the same way.
Nice job! Get yourself a EPB scan tool if you plan on keeping the XC90. Makes life much easier. No need to remove epb you can put it in service mode like the dealership does. Volvo eat through rear pads every 25k-30k miles.
Any idea where I could get one ?

Tommy L Garage It works great.
V60 Polestar thanks!
Do you need to press the piston even with a EPB scan tool?
Great video, and thanks. A few comments; my dealer wanted $850 for this job which is crazy, the yellow clip for the parking brake connection is fragile and I broke mine with gentle pressure. I discovered that it does not really need to be disconnected as you can work around that when removing that whole assembly, not a problem at all. Now, I can go off and spend the money I saved! :)
Glad it helped!
They told me 870. I said no sir
Good thing that you don’t need to disconnect, because I broke the yellow Clip as well with gentle pressure😂
They recently to me 800 for the rear, I told them absolutely not! And this was while the tires were off for a balance and rotation. I'll be doing it myself in a few days.
I used this video recently to guide me through a few things I had questions about and it was really helpful - thanks! BTW, I noticed that you don't need to go crazy turning that spindle on the e-brake once at that step. Before doing that at all I tried compressing the caliper and would get nowhere, so I got a small wrench on it as you do in the video, but rather than turn it that much I gave it a spin, then was able to compress the caliper to a point.. Rinse/repeat until I was able to get the caliper compressed enough for the new pads to go on. Once all re-assembled I had no issues at all with e-brake, warning lights etc. Also as others have pointed out the big allen you need is a 7mm, and I had to get a little creative with getting those 15MM bolts off that hold the caliper bracket on with two wrenches. All in all as mentioned this was a great run through of it.
Good tips. Thanks !!
Your instructions are great. Much less complicated than the professional mechanic that I watched here.
Makes me so happy!
I did before one year , right now I want to replace it again ,your work details was very perfect ,
I’m glad this helped !
Just did mine. Thank you for this video. The dealer changed all 4 rotors but reused the old brakes and try to charge me $800 to change just the rear brakes.
Glad it helped !!!
Don't ever go back to that dealer! New rotors should always get new pads
If they can't get a simple job like that right then what else are they screwing up?
Thanks so much for this! I've been quoted silly money for pads for my S90 as well but the parking brake put me off DIY. I'll do it myself now!
EDIT: Did the job today and its exactly like the video and very easy. Don't pay dealer prices!
Good luck! It’s super easy
having just did this today on a 18 S90 it was pretty easy. i did do it differently in that i remove the caliper and turned it over to access the screws for motor. did not disconnect the wires. 2 screws, pull off motor, turn adjuster and push back piston. taking the motor off took 2 minutes at most. did both sides in 1/2 hour . i read that the parking motor need to be calibrated, but got lucky in that light did not even come on. when you have the dealer do it, remember that free coffee is not free. LOL
Also a good idea!
@@LivingLife128 sounds great, but if not know one thing... You DO NOT NEED to remove the motor at all. If you have uncheck the option to engage the parking brake automatically when engine turns off, the parking brake remains on FULLY OFF position and you can rewind the piston normally using rewind calliper piston tool 😁
You are the best, I folllowed your exact step and was able to replace rear brake pads on my 2021 XC90, thank you!
Great to hear!
Absolutely brilliant video just done my rear brakes on my Volvo s90 2017 and saved me alot of money, thanks alot 😎👌🏻💯
You got it!!!
great vid pal. to start right from the beginning showing what you need and how to take off the auto hand brake is fantastic. other people forget to mention the hand brake ,making the rest of their video useless. so thanks alot..
Glad it helped!!
Just finished replacing mine. Thanks for the video!
Glad I could help! Any feedback?
Best video I have seen to date on the volvo brakes
Thank you so much! I’m glad it helped
This was a HUGE help, thank you so much for publishing it.
Glad it worked out!
Great video, watched this whilst replacing the rear pads on my XC90. Fantastic effort and you saved me lots of money! Much Thanks!
Glad it helped!
I trusted this man and this video, I have parking brake service required on my dash now.
You’re the only one with this issue. Read all the comments. Not one single person reported an issue.
@@TommyLGarage I have a 2018 XC90 I followed this video step by step. I gain nothing by commenting on here false information, I was just hoping someone else knew the fix before I take it to Volvo.
Parking brake service required was not on before I did this now it is.
@@GeorgiaDawgs001 check your cable connections. Maybe you didn’t plug everything back in.
Hold the parking button up for a few seconds, or hold it up as you start the car. The motors are just out of sync, easy fix. I had a bit of a panic over that too
Great detailed video! Helped me with replacing my pads, BUT I found I didn't need to open the E-brake box! Just leave it in park gear and hand brake off.
Interesting. I’ll try it next time
Thank you! just did my S60!!
Happy to help!
Great video. You and a nice way of explaining the process. 👍🏾
Thank you!
Nice work. Doing it by yourself is the best thing you can do.
Saves a ton of money!
REALLY GOOD video. Thank you. My only addition would be to mention not over tightening the screws when putting back on the electronic brake. You can easily crack the plastic casing around the bolt. Ask me how I know…
Thanks for the heads up!
Thanks. Doing my wife's xc90 rgis weekend but I'll be changing the rotors too.
Easy job!
I was quoted 750 CAD for rear pads and brakes plus labor. I think their rate is 175 CAD per hour
A little late this vlog. Well done. Nice tutorial once again. And what's nice is that this procedure is similar to most vehicles with an electronic e-brake.
Thanks! And yes agreed
Very helpful. One of the best I have used!
Thanks!
Thanks chap!
Just changed front and rear with ease thanks to your video 👍
Thanks! I'm glad it helped.
By far the best video!
Thanks!!
Thank you very much this was a perfect took me just under the hour to do my 2020 V60.
Glad it helped!!!
Great Video..thank you for making the video. There's a minor correction: Your started with 7mm allen wrench (correct) but said 9mm allen wrench during the removal.
Good catch!
Thanks I amazing video, just what I needed for my V90.
Glad it helped !!
You can also use a 9V battery to back off the packing break saving you the effort of removing it and backing it off manually. Also if you have auto leveling make sure to turn that off on that same screen as the auto parking break...
Good call. Thanks !
Thank you. You save me $$$$ doing it myself. Not difficult at all. Just make sure you don't drop the brake fluid cap. It is a pain to fish it out. Ask me how I know... :)
Hope you fished it out!
did my 2020 XC90 today. all 4 corners pads and Disc's. took about 3 1/2 hours sitting on the ground. PLEASE NOTE: YOU DO NOT HAVE TO REMOVE THE PARKING BRAKE MOTOR NOW! there is a menu function in the settings of the car to disable the park brake. check this box and you are good to go on the rear.
So this does not always work when you are putting in new pads - sometimes you can’t squeeze them in hence the motor removal.
Great video! I'm going to do this to our XC90 really soon! Thanks!
Thanks for watching. It’s an easy job!
Was quoted £343 for rear pads along on my V90 so bought the pads off a “trade part” seller on eBay for £51 and did the job myself. I have a tool that can put the car into service mode but seeing this makes me regret buying that tool!
It is an easy job indeed :)
Very helpful!!! Thanks for a very informative video. I subscribed!
Awesome, thank you!
Just completed a rear pad change on my 2021 V60 after watching this. All went well and got both changed, but now have a check engine light. Not sure what could be tripping that, other than perhaps an ABS sensor isn't plugged in quite well enough. Going to re-seat them tomorrow and see.
Check engine light is not connected to this job at all. Worst you would have gotten an ABS light.
Nice tutorial. I'm about to do this job this weekend.
hope it went well!
Best video I’ve seen by far thank you
Thanks !!!
Thanks for the video. I've been working on Volvos since the Amazon and they just keep getting more complicated to work on.
Thanks for the love!
Ok Thanks, will let you know when I get the right size bit, thanks again all good stuff.P
Anytime !
Thank you so much super easy! My local Volvo dealership quoted me $1,000 are you serious?! Such a ripoff.
Wow. $1000? Run away!!
Thanks for the video happy to try. Wants to change the disc as well
Happy to help!
Very helpful, thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you just did it for my xc90
Glad it helped!!
Great video; just did my own using your guide. Super easy and a total crime what the dealer charges!
One note; it’s not 5/16mm as you say a few times, it’s simply 5mm.
Thanks for the tip!
I used a 9MM ratcheting box end instead of a 3/8" open end wrench to wind back the electronic parking brake.
Good call!
Thanks so much!! You saved me a bunch of time and money!! Excellent video and greatly appreciated!!!
You're welcome!
Great video. Hope more videos coming soon for Volvo s90
More to come!
Exactly as described, Thanks!
Nice!!
Hello, it is a 11mm hex key for the front calipers, thanks again , P
Good to know. Thanks !!
there are just little repair information about the new Volvo models available therefore great job 👍🏼
Thanks !!
Good tutorial. Bmw wanted 245£ for rear pads on my 640d and i went to a garage i trust. Job done with Brembo ones and sensor for 140. Dont know why dealerships charge a lot higher
pro trick: watch movies on flixzone. Me and my gf have been using them for watching lots of of movies recently.
@Chad Samson definitely, have been watching on flixzone for since december myself :)
Because they have a shiny showroom and BMW tools to pay for. It's the workshop that keeps all that maintained and not the car sales
S90, 40 minutes right side, 15 min left. No issues.
Nice !!
You forgot to mention in the beginning that you need a 9mm Allen socket. Had everything apart and didn’t have that size. Thanks.
I didn’t need it
Thank you. Can you make a video for how to replace the front brake pads it will be greatful🙏🙏
I would but I sold the car. Front is extremely easy
Thank you for your video. It is really helpful for my rear brake job. What would be the torque spec for the bolts?
You got it! I say just tighten it “just enough” :)
GREAT VIDEO. Do one for the front, please.
Coming soon!
Very good video and clear , its very similar to my XC70 , Good Job many thanks. P
Thanks!
Good video. I wish you would have included all of the torque specs for the bolts and the slider pins.
Next time!
Thank you so much for this it was very helpful.
Glad it helped !
The electronic parking brake, you tighten before pads change... And afterwards you leave it just like this? And mount everything back
That’s right !
@@TommyLGarage May i ask for what purpose do you do that? What happens if you dont do it
@@KevOzY because the second you engage the electronic break with the button in the car it will adjust itself to where it should be.
@@TommyLGarage oke that i understand but wont it do the same if you just do nothing with it and afterwards engage in the car
Interesting video but I would say those old pads had plenty of material left. Normally 3mm wear limit.
They asked me to replace them. Hhmmm
Great video.. I noticed you tightened the electronic brake . Is there a need to untied it when replacing it back?
Once you engage the electronic brake it tightens itself
Hello, does this also apply to the Volvo S60 T6 2022? Do you ever have to put your rear breaks in “Maintenance mode”? Thanks 🙏🏽
Yes it does
Great video! It helped me tonight. One issue I got after replacing everything is an error say “Parking Break Not Fully Released”. Any idea what went wrong and how to fix it?
Drove with the car no issue, but it keeps on beeping and I’m not able to engage or disengage the parking brake.
Have you tested the electronic brake right after replacement ?
I would think u would put the servo motor on before you reinstalled the caliper?
At 9:44 please add "barely an inconvenience" and it will be gold !
Haha true
Thanks for the video boss
Hope it helped!!
Thanks 👍
Glad it helped!
SO thanknyou for making this my local Volvo dlerships wanted 890 bucks to put rear brakes on I told wife tell them no after watching this I can donit!! SO QUESTION IS DO I NEED TO BUY VOLVO BRAKES?
No need to buy Volvo brakes.
Thank you for the excellent video
Glad you enjoyed it
Great video. Do you think this pretty much applies to a 17 V90 Cross Country?
Yes same thing :)
Yes same thing :)
Great video, will save me lots of beers! What's the point to press the piston? Can you skip that? Thanks!
You cannot skip it. You need to press them to remove the calipers
Great Tutorial and nice video, Why do I see others using a 9V battery to disengage the electric parking brake ? I must be missing something or is this an optional step ? Thank you!!
Just an alternate step. I prefer this one since I’m in control and no wires needed
Nice Job. My question is - why the rear brakes wear out so much? Drive volvo since years but the rear brakes always lasted a long time - i have 90000km and the second rear pads are gone now... anyone knows that?
Smaller pads and less material. And rear brakes control speed during automatic driving
Ur vidoe was great! Highly recommend
Thanks !!
Please do not ever squeeze your caliber piston in like that. Pliers have teeth/grooves that can damage the piston. If you damage the piston near the edge you run the risk of cutting/rubbing through the piston boot and all your brake fluid will pushed out of that new hole and you will have no brakes. Since most people will not have a special tool, just get a bigger pliers and leave the worn out inside pad/backing plate in place as a buffer between the piston and your pliers. Once the piston is recessed, remove the old inside pad/backing plate.
This video has so many cringe-inducing moments. Thanks for the reminder to not damage the piston surface like that.
@@sinosoul What are all the other cringe-inducing moments you speak of?
Technically, the boot just keeps dust off the piston, it’s not part of the hydraulics. Still something you should avoid damaging if possible.
@@mn240s14 utter bullshit you are talking about 😁
Old man nit pickin of the highest regard
Just a question. When you turn your engine off and you are working on the rear brakes, the electronic brake is switched on, isn't it? When you are disassembling the electronic brake little engine, it is activated, or it is not?
No, just make sure your automatic parking brake is not enabled. You can disable it in the settings.
Thank you so much!!! This is exactly what I needed. Just finished my 2017 XC90. Do you happen to have a guide for the front brakes?
Glad it helped. Front is easy - no special techniques needed
@@TommyLGarage any bleeding of the brakes necessary?
@@bradszostak none at all
Nice and informative video :)
So nice of you
Thank you 👍
Thanks for watching!
I assume u need to have the epb off before removing the motor?
That’s right
At 4;15, you tighten the electronic brake until you cannot tighten anymore, but when you assemble everything back you don't touch this. Did you miss something in this video or can we just not touch it when we assemble back? Thank you for the video.
It adjusts itself after you turn the car on
Amazing video. Big question. A service mode needs to be activated or deactivated for this job if exists.? Happened to us with a 2012 s60... thanks
Nope. No need for it
Use a head mount for your camera so you can use 2 hands
Parking brake Allen size, 5/16 or 8mm???
Either. They’re the same
My local dealer wanted $930 to do a rear brake job on my 2018 S90 which included new rotors as they claimed they cannot be turned. I did it myself using genuine Volvo parts from a competing dealer (including rotors) for about $250…stealerships are just that.
Way to go!!!
Love the video, when are you going to do the front brakes?
Thanks. Sometime this year
Very good work..
Thanks!
My caliper only compressed when turned... not sure if there are 2 types?
Same type. Mine also turned
At 4.45, you mentioned 9mm allen head socket , but at he start of the video, you said 7mm? Which one is it? Thx
9mm
@@TommyLGarage thx
I think he meant Hex 7. And Hex 5 for the brake motor. 320mm discs
The pads I bought didn’t have paper backing on outside pad, is that a problem?
Not at all. Might squeak a bit
Auto brake need recode after I done the brake pad. Any solution".?
You can reset it with a scanner.
Very nice ... I know it costs an arm and leg to service my xc90.
Mine has been super cheap to maintain
