- Joe Rogan is leaving RUclips. Patrick Bet-David gives his perspective on the $100 million Spotify deal and what it means for content creators.
“The popular podcaster sold his 11-year-old “The Joe Rogan Experience” series to Spotify SPOT+8.44% in a licensing deal that’s reportedly worth more than $100 million, The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday. Rogan’s full library - which adds up to almost 1,500 episodes, which weren’t available on the streaming service before - will hit Spotify beginning Sept. 1. Episodes of the video podcast are currently available on RUclips, but will move off the Alphabet GOOG+2.42% platform to be exclusive to Spotify by the end of the year.”

Spotify won. RUclips lost. RUclips has been going downhill for a long time now in regards to the censorship, the copyright strikes, the bannings, etc. We don't need government interference to make things fair, we needed a big company to step in with a free market solution therefore spotify wins.

Plot twist: Google buys spotify in June
This is very likely to happen IF RUclips have any interest in fixing their copyright content strike system. By buying Spotify they could use Spotify business model to license music for their content creator on the fly. Creators no longer have to worry about copyright strikes and making money every time a content creator uses copyrighted music on their content. As for the technical/legal know how, there is only a few companies that can do this, and Google is one.

If Spotify starts video streaming, RUclips is in trouble. There’s so many people upset with RUclips yet can’t move because there isn’t a platform large enough to make the switch to, that may very well change in the near future.
There's been several alternatives that have existed over the years, each one of them faced the same issue. The fact that it would end up costing them billions per year just to get anywhere near RUclips.
What many people don't understand is that RUclips operates at a loss. Google make up for this by selling space on their servers to other companies like Spotify which is how RUclips is able to survive and why everyone else who has tried failed.
The only company that could really compete with Google is Microsoft and Apple since they also own a lot of cloud storge servers.

That is because many of these potential opponents are thinking in terms of the wrong business model. Many are thinking they can replicate RUclips ad revenue model.
They cannot do that and the main reason why is because google is really backing RUclips so as to drive google forward.
I am current working with a technology company to produce an alternative that is different from the RUclips model. RUclips was a loss making venture from the start as a stand alone business.

Not to mention this spike is largely driven by day traders that know they can make an easy buck off of people that invest based on flashy news events. They get in early in the day, immediately buy when the news hits, and then sell at close.
I suspect this Joe Rogan aquisition will go the same way that the Ninja-Mixer one did. Big splash, no impact on the bottom line, likely waste of money.
If you want to make a quick buck, buy spotify stock a couple weeks before Rogan migrates all his content to their platform, ride the positive news loop of the migration happening, and then sell.

I think this is a huge inflection moment for podcasting as a medium. A deal worth more than $100m is a benchmark in validating podcasts as a reputable media source, rather than being “non-mainstream” media. Joe makes out great from this, and Spotify is really putting the heat under RUclips, and I love it! 👌

There's no competition really. Videos hosted via RUclips cost Google money while videos hosted via other companies such as Spotify using Googles Cloud Storage servers generates money for Google.
If anything Google wants more people to move away from RUclips and start using these other services so they can start making more money.

it really depends on the contracts duration. If Joe is making $30m per year and the Spotify contract is a 4 year long contract then that's $25m per year so in that sense Joe would definitely turn it down (all hypothetical of course)

I think the key distinction though that he missed in the video was that spotify is a closed content ownership company essentially, whereas RUclips is an "open" platform with user-created content. That is, RUclips doesn't curate its own content porfolio per se. I dont think it even makes sense to say "RUclips didn't try to keep him". It's not like they have individual contracts with each RUclipsr (to my knowledge).

I highly doubt Spotify will host videos like youtube. Based on their current model, they most likely want to become a "premium" place for content. Meaning that they will likely continue to pick and choose the top content creators from youtube/soundcloud/etc like recruiters for the "big leagues."
If they host those who youtube silences and bans, it could be an interesting decade ;)

I think you miss why Spotify’s market cap went up so much. It’s not that Rogan is worth $5b. I think it’s because Spotify is saying we’re now going to compete with RUclips. RUclips has had a monopoly and been complacent and opaque about how it pays creators. There’s room for a competitor. There’s a lot of money to be made. And Spotify is saying, we’re jumping in. This is good for everyone.

Once they figure out with Rogan and some others how sharing the pot works in practice, I think a lot of creators in the low CPM genres will consider moving over there exclusively. RUclips isn’t a difficult business model. The tech is easy. It’s all network effects. And money will buy the network.

Apparently the 100m dollar *guess* was way off. No official sources has said how much he got it was just a guess from wall street or something. Brian callen and Brendan Schaub said it was way off.. Brendan mentioned later in the podcast 200m while talking about living large ect but it seemed like a slip up. So I think Joe got way more than 100m
