  • Opening weekend is something we look forward to all year, really happy to get out and see there was a lot more water than last year. Spent the entire day Friday scouting and didn’t really finding anything too promising but right as we were about to call it quits for the day, we came across a hole that was loaded to the brim with gadwalls and mallards tucked right around the bank where we would have some good hide from the timber. We called the crew to let them know they better be ready to sleep in the hole and bring all their shells. Hadn’t had an opener this promising in about 4 years, tons of people out scouting, lots of boats running so we knew we had to ride the hole that night to get it secured and set up for the calvary to be out there early in the morning. On our way back out to bring the guys who were going to sleep it, the boat got stuck a few hundred yards from where we needed to drop them off, took us about an hour to get moving again… This is the point where the hunt gets named “Lessons Learned”, in the hour or two we were gone someone had locked down the hole. Half the group was able to stay and hunt because it was such a hard hole to get to and the other half went in blind and hunted another one of the holes we scouted. Regardless it was good to be back, great weather, and at the end of the day it’s about us all being able to hunt together on opening weekend. Day 2 started off with a nice little breeze, winds to our back and we came up on an old blind that we threw some brush on and it turned out to be a great hunt to end opening weekend. Lessons learned, when you find that many ducks tucked in a small hole on opening day or opening split it’s probably best you don’t leave. Pack your pillow, sleeping bag and a cot. Always be ready to stay put!
