  • Please see a more recent version of my design in this video: • OpenVent Bristol V2.0 ...
    and the published design here: www.instructables.com/id/Open...
    openventbristol.co.uk/
    The USP of this design is how easy and fast it can scale for mass production for the following reasons:
    - Automated production: The production of each part is fully automated (laser cutting), with only 8 different parts
    - Only 6 off-the-shelf components: Very few different components are needed and no exotic parts are needed (not even a motor coupling)
    - Simple mechanism: It uses a super simple mechanism with just an arm mounted to a motor - no complicated mechanisms to go wrong, just one moving part
    - Fast assembly: Complete assembly is possible in around 20 min with one person
    - Adjustable settings: Has full adjustment of breath frequency and pressure/tidal volume and with a small adaption can function within all NHS requirements
    - Low cost
    The design is open source and a build guide is available on Instructables: www.instructables.com/id/COVI...
    This design doesn't currently meet the NHS requirements (in link below). A list of improvements for the next version with the aim of meeting the spec is kept in the GitHub readme (link below), some of those things are here:
    - A 12V battery backup with at least 20 min run time
    - A battery management circuit to automatically switch over to the battery in a power cut (not actually required but would seem sensible)
    - A pressure sensor alarm for sensing failure and a buzzer & LED to create an alarm on failure
    - An LCD screen to show pressure and other values and Settings
    GitHub code link: github.com/RealFreshRate/Open...
    NHS Rapidly manufactured ventilator system specification: www.gov.uk/government/publica...
    Leave a comment if you think there is anything else this will need before it could be safely adopted, particularly if you have experience using existing ventilators.

    Thank you for your work. But, this is just a hand protection for the Ambu bag. To ventilate people with pneumonia, you need a more delicate work of the respirator, different type of air supply, Peep. I'm not talking about monitoring ventilation - it is necessary if the patient is ventilated for many days. In addition, you need a good humidification of the air mixture.

      Nikulin Alex do you have any actual stats you can share. There are people dying because of the lack of available ventilators. I know it will not replace a $30,000 unit, but it it saves a single life, is it not worth it?

    Pulmonologist doctors requires AC mode or assist mode in this type of low cost ventilators wherein it has respond with the breath of the covid patient. There should be a trigger signal from the patient otherwise the rhythm of the breath will not be in sync and may cause further health issues. We made one already and this is our problem now.

    • @00lewisd1
      @00lewisd1  4 года назад

      Thanks for your message. I plan to create an assistive mode soon. Interesting that you have done this already, do you have any details of your project that I can view? The problem I have with creating an assistive breathing mode is that there is no test for measuring the success of it in the MHRA document

      JOHAN PINZON PARDO exactly, the ones I have seen (that are going for full approval) have bio feedback systems and dual control systems built in. Any failure of the control circuit, a simple switch changes over to a new duplicate circuit in less than a second, the faulty circuit can be replaced with zero interruption of operation.

    Hi Darren. You have definitely done your research. The peep valve is an excellent idea and I like how your motor assembly is attached to the housing. I am working a system that would ideally work with your system to trigger the ventilator based on an assist control mode. That would reduce the risk of barotrauma. Great work!

  • @murzabaev
    @murzabaev 4 года назад +2

    Great development, Darren! It is designed in the simple way so people can re-produce it, which is very critical for that purpose. If you allow me, I would suggest you to attache a potentiometer to the geared motor shaft as shaft angle sensor so you can better control the airflow. Your control system looks a bit complicated; you could suggest is based on H-bridge (which is relatively simple and people may find H-bridge chip in their local component stores), and all your control knobs/potentiometers directly connected to arduino. This way more people can re-produce the ventilator. Keep this good job up! I wish you great success! P.S. one more question: how are you going to modify it to connect your pressure module?

    • @00lewisd1
      @00lewisd1  4 года назад +3

      Thanks for sharing your idea. I did think about the POT Vs the current sensor, but went for the current sensor in the end to save on extra mechanical parts and seeing as the current sensor is included in the standard motor driver shield. I am planning to include a pressure sensor to maintain the correct pressure and sense failure.

    Hi, have you tried the design with a test lung? Generally you'll get more load on the motor hence proportional increase in current depending on load increase. This may change the calibration of settings in your code. Also'll need a pressure safety release valve.

    • @00lewisd1
      @00lewisd1  4 года назад

      datta naik thabks for your comment. I am using a test lung of sort (I can’t get access to a proper test lung so I’m using the expansion balloon from a waters circuit). Over pressure valves which are compatible with BVMs already exist, so it should just be a case to add one of those I think

    Hey, so I was remaking this machine and I came across an issue with the motor arm. When it presses down on the BVM Bag it doesn’t come back up properly. The motor will just continue to press down on the bag. I am using a acyclic motor arm but I think it’s something else that’s giving it an issue. I would love to get some help on troubleshooting this problem. Have a great day and thanks in advance.

    Appreciate your excellent no-frills design, which is what is needed at the moment for a low cost model. Couple of questions- since your geared motor seems to be working open loop- in one direction you limit it by sensing the current flow through the motor. How is it returning back to the start position without feedback? Secondly how did you select this geared motor, any particular parameters relating to the torque or compression needed in this application; also what is the probably lifetime of this motor, especially if its put into strenuous use at say 30 compressions per minute?
