Thank you for this video.
My pleasure!
What’s the earliest that you can apply?
As soon as the voyage you want to go on is posted! They post them about 2 years in advance, so right now they have up Spring 2021, Fall 2022, and Spring 2022 :)
thank you for this !! I'm going through the application process for spring 2022, any tips on the essay would be appreciated !!
so excited for you!!! yes, i think i will read it in an upcoming video just to show people what worked for me :))
can you talk about activities/clubs that were available during the voyage in a video?
ruclips.net/video/pXKOm3ILMds/видео.html
I talk about clubs on the ship about halfway through this video ("free time on semester at sea")! They really vary every voyage, because they are student run, so anyone can create whatever club they want!
So one of the first days on the ship there is an activity fair where you can get up on stage and pitch a club idea, then walk around to tables and sign up for clubs others have created!
Hi Jess, hope you're still reading the comments :) I just realized that you can already apply for the voyage I want to participate in (Spring 2023) but I am not even going to Uni yet. I am applying for Uni in July and it wont start until early October. What am I supposed to do now? Just wait until I'm accepted or already apply for SaS, even though I haven't got the required paperwork yet? Thank you for your videos, they're giving me hope that even I could be making it on the ship, it's all I can think about these days hahah
haha yes i’m still reading comments, i’m so excited you want to do SAS! you can actually apply before you start going to a university, which is nice because then you’ll know for sure that you’ll have a spot reserved on the voyage you want to go on if you get in!!
so what you’ll need to do if you want to apply before you start your next year of school is to apply as a “gap year student,” and these directions can be found on the SAS website. applying this way means that they’ll look at your scores/grades from the school you’ve done so far, and then once you start Uni you’ll automatically be transferred to the status of a “regular college student” for the voyage :) but you can definitely apply early, no problem!!
www.semesteratsea.org/admission/requirements/gap-year/
thank you so much, I will do it that now even though my gpa is 2.6 and technically not good enough for a gap year student, I will try my best to get in. Maybe my essay will convince them that I deserve to go lol
also could you do a highlight video (you in the ship having fun etc)
maaan I wish I had thought ahead and gotten more footage of me on the ship :( I didn't know I wanted to start a RUclips channel until after I got back, and I'm super bummed about it!
Hi! What happens if the main way you can afford semester at sea is through scholarships and you’re admitted but they don’t offer you enough scholarship money and you can’t afford to go anymore? Can you just decide not to go? Also thank you for your videos they’re really detailed!!
Yes, you can decide not to go on the voyage up to 90 days before it embarks, and get any deposits/payments you've already made refunded up until that date!
And I think that if you don't get the scholarships you need or a job on the ship or something, you should email your admissions counselor and ask if there is any more you can do -- they might get you a cheaper room or another form to fill out to ask for additional aid or something!
Jess Horst Okay! I’m still in high school but I was just wondering for the future haha thank you so much
@@Amelia-ub2ss Hah perfect, you'll be so prepared :)
Jess Horst haha yup! :)
If I’m interested in the Spring 2022 voyage how early should I apply?
as early as you know for sure that you want to go! these next few voyages are going to fill up super quickly because of the cancellations due to the pandemic, so apply early to ensure you get a spot!!!!!
I submitted my application on Sunday and didn’t get a verification email or anything ?? Should I be worried??😬
hmmm wait about a week!! they might be super busy :) if you’re worried i think there’s an email you can find on the SAS website and you can ask them!
fun that you applied though!!!!!!
it only asked me for unofficial for my university. is that normal?
maybe they changed it!! that’s way easier haha, just send them what they ask for 😊
I submitted my application today! But I didn't receive an email right after. Is this bad or does it just mean my application is under review?
i think you should be fine!! they probably have a lot of applications coming in at this time, so give it at least a week :)
Will they refund you back the $1,000 deposit? or is it a non-refundable deposit
they will refund it up to 90 days before your voyage starts!!
@@jessshorst does that mean they will refund it to you only if you decide not to go on the ship, or will they always refund it?
How much did you spend pre-voyage?
then flights to where the ship is taking off from ($500) and however many nights you want to stay in a hostel or hotel and activities you would want to do in that country for a few days ($500?) my parents were with me for this in amsterdam, so i don’t know exactly how much was spent during those couple of days. but you can have it be cheaper if you stay in a hostel!
@@jessshorst woah I thought they payed for hotels/hostels
nope 😬 i would recommend doing a hostel to save money if you’re traveling alone! i was with my parents and they wanted to do a hotel and go to museums and such for a few days, but you could probably stay at a hostel for less than $15 per night.
i even knew people who contacted other SAS students through the facebook page and planned to stay with each other the first nights to save money!
@@jessshorst that sounds fun wow im going to def do that! tysm for the tips
I’m currently halfway through year 8 (Australia) but I already know that I want to go on SAS as a gap student in 2025. If the applications come out two years before the voyage, would I be able to apply even though I’m still in high school?
Yes! So what you're going to do when you apply that way is to follow the application instructions for gap year students, and then once you start in your university and get a transcript there after your first year or first semester (grades from that program), you will email that transcript to SAS to prove that you still have good academic standing, and are taking university classes! And then they will switch your status from "gap year student" to being a regular college student.
And I love that you already know that you want to go!!! It's awesome to plan ahead :)
Spring 2025 or Fall 2025 ??
Hey! I'm about to apply for the 2021 spring voyage and I'm a little confused. I'm going to university in September starting a humanities foundation degree-before doing a BA in International Development and Global Politics. I emailed an admissions person to see if it's okay for me to apply as I don't have A levels but the humanities course makes it so I will have the equivalent of A levels to start my degree.but I want to go on the 2021 voyage which will be half way through my foundation degree so I won't have transcripts until right before leaving for my first semester . The admissions person seemed to indicate I should apply, but I'm worried I won't be accepted because my education levels are confusing and slightly different to a standard one, what do you think? (I'm from the UK) :)
Technically it will be a four year course since the first year is a foundation course, and that's when I'm applying to go. Idk
Okay so I think that what your question would line up with if someone were asking who goes from the United States would be that you're applying now before you're getting a transcript from a University, but you'll be taking University classes in the fall? So what SAS says to do in a scenario like this is to apply as if you are a gap year student, and send your grades from high school/the school you went to before your BA program, and then after you take the first semester send the grades that you got then in and SAS will change your status from gap year student to a regular college student.
I think you could apply now and be okay! www.semesteratsea.org/admission-aid/requirements/gap-year/
Here is the info for applying for gap year students, but you'll have to combine this with the application for international students :)
If you're still confused just email admissions again and ask to make sure it's okay that you apply now!!
Jess Horst hey! Yes that is very helpful. So say I got on the 2021 voyage as a gap year application, when my first university semester ends in December I get the university to send them my transcripts which will mean I can go then as an undergraduate student and change the courses slightly I will go on? Is that right? If so thank you that's a lot more clear. Only sad thing is I've just finished my essay for the undergraduate global development question :(
I’m about to be a senior in hs and I want to do sas spring 22 should I apply now or next year?
* fall 22* also is it true the if you get the most expensive cabin you get a higher change of getting more scholarships money
You could do either one! If you apply now, you will follow the application process of a gap year student, then once you finish your first semester of college next fall you would send in those grades as your transcript! I don't know the correct answer for sure, but it might be better to apply earlier rather than later? I feel like the next few voyages are going to fill up FAST because the one this fall has been cancelled, and people might be trying to reschedule!!!
Jess Horst Thank you so much! Is it ok if I ask questions later in the future?
@@cassiaacuna6932 oh for sure!
Hey!! I had a question i saw on the website that you can also go as a post- graduate student. I’m not American so I’m not a 100% sure what that means, but is it like that you can go after you graduated college?
And I’m also international so I’m not sure if I can go after graduating college :)
Yes! So for the year after you graduate college you can also go on Semester at Sea... or at least for the semester after you graduate. If you did this you would probably be 22-23 years old, and would still have to take classes on the ship even though they wouldn't transfer anywhere/count for anything!
But this is always an option if you want to go on SAS but can't fit it into your schedule earlier. It is far less common than going when you're younger, but I knew at least 10-20 people on my voyage who were postgrad!
Jess Horst Do you think that it was more difficult for them socially and for them to make friends because of their age? Also can they still be awarded scholarships?
Jess Horst thank you for you response!! I asked my college but I’m not able to go during my study so then I will do this. I will be 20 when I graduate, is that a common age on the ship?
for a spring voyage, how early can/should I start the application
Well if you're looking at spring 2021 or 2022, I think both of them are already up on the SAS website! As soon as the voyage links and itineraries are posted, you can start your application, and this usually happens about 2 years in advance.
I would say that as soon as the spring voyage you want to go on is listed, you may as well apply if you know for sure that you want to go on that one! Like I mentioned in the video, your $1000 deposit is refundable until 90 days before the voyage, so even if you change your mind you can get your money back. But you will have a far better chance of being accepted if you apply early before all the slots are filled up :)
Jess Horst THANK YOU SO MUCHHHH 🤍🤍 you and your videos have been a major help !!
@@jessshorst I don't have my college transcript yet im a high school senior would it be better to wait to get my first transcript and apply for spring 2022?
@@ryanvargez9312 you can actually apply now before being in college, and then you'll be asked to send your transcript after you complete the first semester! so if you want to apply now just to get it over with, you can use the instructions for applying as a gap year student as a guideline www.semesteratsea.org/admission-aid/requirements/gap-year/
Can I use a scholarship from anywhere and use it to pay for the tuition or does it have to be from semester at sea.
if the scholarship you have (say from your college or something) can be applied anywhere, then you can definitely use it for semester at sea! however, my school gave me an academic scholarship to attend college there, and they didn’t let that apply to SAS :/ so it’ll be different for every situation!
@@jessshorst thanks :)
