I just got two jolly green tree collards from you. They are already growing quickly. I am so excited to harvest when they are large enough!! Thank you so much for what you do!!
Got my shipment of Tree Collards, thank you so much!!! I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see a segment on cooking these amazing plants........from wraps to salads!! Namaste
Oh I’m so thankful to hear about your less than ideal soil. I’m halfway done with digging holes for my new collards but was getting discouraged from my tightly packed clay soil. Taking a break, happy to watch another of your wonderful videos and SO encouraged to keep going. Thank you for making these videos, Sequoiah.
@@projecttreecollard Finally got my cages made and got the beautiful Jolly Green & Merritts in the ground today. Really appreciate you and your generous sharing of knowledge!
I’m so impressed by your taking out all those many rocks, such a big job, but wow - look at your fruits now; Beautiful plants/trees! I love learning about tree collards, thank you - new subscriber :)
Enjoyed talk on your entree collards, I am( 4) year gardener,I just love gardening I am e74 year old, retired. I ' m growing this spring about 25 plus veggies, flowers in my backyard,& front yard,. Good luck to you on your gardening. Ermaruth Richards.
Btw before growing Inread that apparently they actually do well in tougher soil because they can stand upright (in super loamy soil you have to support them
Tree Collards and Tree Kale are next on my list of things to get in the ground! I have 42 nicely developed Moringa Trees and about 40 new Moringa sprouts (also known as micro-greens for birds! argh!!! LOL) designed to provide us with food and shade! We also have 3 apple seed trees growing from seeds from store bought apples: 2 Pink Lady and 1 Fuji.
I tossed a handful ( wasn't sure if it would work or not lol) of tree collard seeds in the ground around two months ago and they are on their way. I'm excited I have at least 8 plants. :-)
Thank you again. My tree collards are doing very well. I’m having a big problem with the white moths. Any suggestions? Blessings to you and your family 🙏🏾
no particular size cage....around 12 inches across is great. Just be sure to get smaller diameter holes in your chicken wire. One inch is too large. 3/4 or 1/2 inch is better. I do have a video on my channel about making the gopher cages for tree collards
If you have hard freezes in your area by December then it may be too late unless you have a greenhouse. They need up to 8 weeks to root. The other time to do it would be around April.
So cool. I'm growing these in Nottingham Uk and they are growing really nice despite the terrible rain. We cooked a collard greens recipe with bacon and dod a slow cooked bbq brisket. The next day we made a pizza with the collard recipe and brisket with green chili and fresh oregano it's the best pizza I ever had
In your area, growing Jolly Green Tree Collards from cuttings or rooted plants is marginal. I know you have had some big, strangely cold winters the last few years. If I were you, I would buy the Jolly Green Tree Collard seeds, and grow them in the spring when you would start other brassicas like broccoli and cauliflower. I think you already missed the correct timing to plant them in the fall
I purchased cuttings from you in October,2022. Potted them according to instructions but they haven’t gotten any roots yet. They were exposed to the vast amounts of N. California rain, so 1 stem just rotted & the other 2 are firm with new leaves. Is there anyway to get the roots started or is it too late or do I just leave them alone?
I don’t see a lot of companion planting...how do you organically keep them pest free? I just lost one of my young purple tree collards to aphids and usually those white moths land on them a lot too.
no companion planting yet as I barely got these in the ground 4 months ago in 100 degree heat. They are great interplanted with perennial herbs such as hyssop, thyme, oregano, yarrow, parsley...and annuals such as lettuce, mache, miners lettuce, cilantro, calendula, etc. Apparantly the hyssop helps deter the white cabbage moths, but I am not going to vouch for that yet.
For international orders, you go to the website and choose the seeds you want and then I send you a PayPal Invoice. Shipping is $10. This info is on the bottom of the seed descriptions and the order page. Thanks!
YOU GOT THIS... It'll be a burdenous CHORE to get that soil right, but you know what you're doing and it'll be worth it. I'm sure you already know that.
I planted two Jolly Greens last spring in San Antonio and they are doing very well. Good morning sun and afternoon shade in a garden bed. No issues with the consecutive nights down in the low 20s during the winter. Almost 8 feet tall after one year! Ladybugs will be your friend.
Could have waited to plant in soil. Place the big pots in the ground, and carboard and mulch 6 to 12 inches on top. Let the worms do the digging and regenerating the soil.
I would have waited if my living didn't depend on these plants. I needed to plant ASAP and I did my best at improving the soil with the help of the few worms that were there

wonderful Maggie! It's hard work but worth it. And yes, my soil was terrible and is starting to get a lot better after 1 1/2 years.

sounds wonderful Ermaruth! Congratulations on entering the world of gardening and having the time to really enjoy it!!!!

I think most of them need staking no matter the type of soil. Unexpected winds and storms can knock them over and/or break branches once they are tall
@@projecttreecollard yes makes sense with all those leaves like sails. One of the leaves on mine is same width as my small wheel barrow

right back at ya:)
Sequoyah Great video! Does this principle of cutting off the top work on top bunch type of collards and Georgia collards?
I don't think so but I only specialize in perennials

Your collards are wonderful. I missed some of your content due to sound. Are all tree collards accepting if same soil content? Thank you.
as far as i know they seem to all prefer well drained soil but are tolerating my terrible clay
Awesome!!!
thx!
Hello is the jolly tree collard a hubrid thanks❤
Technically all tree collards are hybrids. The Jolly Green Tree Collard came from a seed that popped up in my garden.
I have never even seen or heard of tree collards before today.
Thank you again. My tree collards are doing very well. I’m having a big problem with the white moths. Any suggestions? Blessings to you and your family 🙏🏾
you need to put on your reading glasses and look for the green caterpillars on your plants. Then you can feed them to your chickens or destroy them.
What size was your gopher cages? Do you have a video on n my sling them?

Just put 3-4 inch collards in ground. I'm on the Ms Coast. Curious to watch the grow into good eats.
Anyone know if I can grow these in 10b south Florida?
check for sure on Florida Food Forest group on FB. They are very active and a wealth of info. Be specific about your town/region/microclimate.
When is the best time to purchase in zone 7b, Atlanta GA. First frost around beginning of November.

I want this ssed give some information about it
Do they get alot of pest damage in warm weather?
it depends on your situation and pest load. I don't have issues in California
Will the Merritt collard grow branches because I have had it about 2 years and it never grow branches in order for me to propagate
watch the video I made on How To Prune Merritt Tree Collards

I want to try this variety in Austin
I think it would do well there
What's the heat tolerance of these? Can I grow them in the tropics?
Since I introduced the Jolly Green Tree Collard in 2020 (quite recently) I haven't gotten any feedback from customers in the tropics. Sorry!

I will work on that for future videos. thanks for the feedback.
Do you have a video on how to grow Jolly Green Tree Collards from seed?
no. the tree collard seeds are all treated the same....and the same as you would plant any brassica like broccoli or kale
"This is horrible soil"... as she talks with collards growing above her head!
really and truly, it is heavy clay with LOTS of rocks....I did heavily amend the soil before I put the gopher cages in
I can’t here you.
