    Oh I’m so thankful to hear about your less than ideal soil. I’m halfway done with digging holes for my new collards but was getting discouraged from my tightly packed clay soil. Taking a break, happy to watch another of your wonderful videos and SO encouraged to keep going.
    Thank you for making these videos, Sequoiah.

      no particular size cage....around 12 inches across is great. Just be sure to get smaller diameter holes in your chicken wire. One inch is too large. 3/4 or 1/2 inch is better. I do have a video on my channel about making the gopher cages for tree collards

      If you have hard freezes in your area by December then it may be too late unless you have a greenhouse. They need up to 8 weeks to root. The other time to do it would be around April.

      In your area, growing Jolly Green Tree Collards from cuttings or rooted plants is marginal. I know you have had some big, strangely cold winters the last few years. If I were you, I would buy the Jolly Green Tree Collard seeds, and grow them in the spring when you would start other brassicas like broccoli and cauliflower. I think you already missed the correct timing to plant them in the fall

California rain, so 1 stem just rotted & the other 2 are firm with new leaves. Is there anyway to get the roots started or is it too late or do I just leave them alone?

    I don’t see a lot of companion planting...how do you organically keep them pest free? I just lost one of my young purple tree collards to aphids and usually those white moths land on them a lot too.

    • @projecttreecollard
      @projecttreecollard  3 года назад

      no companion planting yet as I barely got these in the ground 4 months ago in 100 degree heat. They are great interplanted with perennial herbs such as hyssop, thyme, oregano, yarrow, parsley...and annuals such as lettuce, mache, miners lettuce, cilantro, calendula, etc. Apparantly the hyssop helps deter the white cabbage moths, but I am not going to vouch for that yet.
