Awesome cool gamer - Not that many people actually live in that area of London. It's all parliamentary buildings. Those that live within earshot are probably just used to it. I'd love to live close enough to Big Ben to hear it chiming. Trouble is, even a 1 bedroom apartment round there would probably set you back about 2 million :-(

The pubs and bars almost all close, with the exception of some hipper districts such as a Islington or Camden, at 11pm plus sup up time. I would even wager that many other European cities are more 24/7 than London. As Mance Rayder pointed out, very few average Londoners live near to Big Ben.

My favorite neighbor down the street in 1979-2004 had a grandfather clock that sounded like Big Ben as well. The real Big Ben reminds me of her grandfather clock. I have to send her this link. She moved to a retirement community in 2004-2005, but maybe she hears grandfather clocks there too. I hope so because we both like the chimes.

I built a 20x20x100 lego model of Big Ben (interior and outside) it took me exactly 156 hours and 27 minutes and I put a actual alarm clock in it to make it chime it's so big it's in my walled garden (it's about 2 feet taller than the room it was intended to be in)
That IS good quality sound. It sounds like I'm walking across the bridge towards the London Eye. I say going towards the London Eye because I always cross the bridge in that direction.
