    The Ben Keays one is the worst by far. But there's another one from this year, also with the Crows. Inside the last 30 seconds of play, with Collingwood up by two points, Jordan Dawson was smashed in the face by a Collingwood player about 30 meters from goal. Umpire didn't call a free for high contact, probably costing Adelaide the win. AFL had to put out a statement saying that the umpire was wrong and that Dawson should have been given the free.

    one of the worst decisions was when Josh Jenkins kicked a "goal" but upon closer inspecting, it actually hit the post, it cost Port a chance to play for finals that season, what makes it even more ironic now, is that it was the same umpire that stupidly called Ben Keays' goal a behind for you guessed it, "hitting the post"
    for close calls like that, there really should be a compulsory score review, the technology is meant to be there to prevent human error.

    • @darrenmiles-morland8038
      @darrenmiles-morland8038 Год назад +1

      With all of the commotion that's gone on about the Crows being potentially robbed of a finals berth after being on the wrong end of the Ben Keays goal umpiring mistake, everyone (Crows supporters in particular) seems to have forgotten that Adelaide got the rub of the green in their favour with that Josh Jenkins decision when replays showed that the ball clearly hit the post.

      @@darrenmiles-morland8038but the difference is we admitted it shouldn’t have been. Jenkins said to the whole crowd on mic it hit the post. Sydney acts like they won it properly

    • @JohnHenrySMH
      @JohnHenrySMH Год назад

      Yeah but the difference there was that the umpire wasn't sure, so went upstairs for the review. In that case the tech wasn't good enough to detect it hitting. So the umpire did the right thing, but the technology let them down. Even now, the only reason we all assume it probably did hit the post is because Jenkins told us he thinks it did. With the Keays one, the footage is definitive, but the same umpire for some reason didn't send it upstairs. I suspect that there has been pressure put on the goal umpires to not hold up the game with pointless reviews, I'd love to hear his side of the story. Best solution is to make it so that if the ball hits the post but still goes through, then it counts as a goal. If it bounces back in play then it's a behind, or just play on, which I think is a better idea because it could advantage the attacking team more than a single point would.

    • @supaskiltz9877
      @supaskiltz9877 Год назад +1

      @@darrenmiles-morland8038no one has forgotten that, it’s all I see come up, I don’t think we should be arguing or calling it Karma tho. Instead we should cause more commotion as the umpiring and technology hasn’t gotten better all these years later.
      I think the Crows fans advocating for compensation are dumb, I’m a Crows fan and that’s just not gonna happen and even so bad umpiring decisions ruin games at the end a lot.
      We should however as AFL fans realise how bad the state of the game has gotten with umpiring and the 30 fps technology that we can seem to never make the correct call during critical moments while every other sport has no problem with that.

    • @theflyingdropbear2009
      @theflyingdropbear2009 Год назад +1

      @@supaskiltz9877 Referring to the last paragraph, that in itself is the problem, the AFL has enough money to throw around to make the technology better. This is the technology that should have improved, as the system hasn't gotten any better since it was first implemented. which is sad, because all the other sporting codes have score review systems that are far superior to the AFLs.
      I think instead of the Crows (the team I support) seeking compensation, they should be voicing a means to implement improvements in not only the technology but also when and how it is used, with one potential idea being that players can initiate a score review.
      for a professional league like the AFL, the standard is simply nowhere near good enough. I would hate to see it happen in the Grand Final, that would force the AFL to act if it were to happen, a small part of me hopes it does happen.

  • @kelstra1997
    @kelstra1997 Год назад +3

    I completely agree with the sentiments expressed in the video. Our game continues to improve in leaps and bounds but the one aspect that has gone backwards is the umpiring. I will never be convinced that game has ever needed three umpires let alone the four that we have now. After all, for over a hundred years we only had one. There are so many occasions where there is clearly a conflict between the umpires on whether a free kick is warranted for a particular incident and often as not the umpire furthest away is the one who prevails.
    Looking at the terrible incident in the Adelaide game where Ben Keys' goal was called a point, if you look at the video there were at least two umpires right behind the kick and it's inconceivable that they didn't see that it was a goal. After all, the players from both sides saw it and reacted accordingly so why not the umpires who then should have called for a review?
    The 2018 Grand Final is the one that really gets me however. Clearly it was a free kick to Bruzzy Maynard.
    There is absolutely nothing that gets me more annoyed than when games are decided by the umpires and there have been many of those.

    • @Kaleen_YT
      @Kaleen_YT  Год назад +1

      very well said.

    • @theflyingdropbear2009
      @theflyingdropbear2009 Год назад

      yeah with four umpires on the field you'd expect the umpiring to get better, not the other way around, but sadly that is the case, I would also argue that as more rule changes occur and as the game speeds up, the worse the umpiring gets.
      AFL House has a degree of blame for it as well, considering the fact that in some weeks they are telling the umpires to crack down on different matters during the game, really what AFL House has to do in the off-season, is instead of focusing on rule changes and looking for ways to speed up the game, is focus on getting the umpiring up to scratch.
      for a professional sport to not have umpiring up to an acceptable standard, is simply not good enough, maybe it is time for the AFL to put in place a DRS-like system in place, as well as allowing for players to instigate a score review as well, it might slow the game down a little, but it might be healthier for the game itself, and it might even force to umpires to change a quite a bit as well.

It was no different to what happened with Cam Mooney when he fell onto an opposition player's back after tackling him to the ground in the 2010 Qualifying Final when Cameron Ling got disallowed a goal late in the match which would have put Geelong in front and potentially won them that match. Everyone focuses on Blicavs disposing of the ball incorrectly when having prior opportunity. No-one ever notices that Bailey falls onto his back after tackling him to the ground. Sheed did not play on. It was his momentum carrying him backwards past the mark. That's not "playing on". As for the "block", it could be argued that Maynard blocked Rioli from contesting. Maynard runs at Rioli, with his back to the ball, Rioli stands his ground and the two grapple. Who has blocked who? Not to mention the ball fell short of both of them anyway.
    The rushed behind was the right call. I know, I know, the rules allow for it. But he waited for the pressure to come, meaning he had ample time to dispose of it. The umpire used a bit of common sense (something we're always screaming at them to use) and basically said "you weren't under pressure, you clearly waited for the pressure to come before crossing the line. You made no attempt to move the ball on while you weren't under pressure. You've deliberately rushed the behind. Free kick".

    Coming from an umpire myself, a lot of the "Missed" decisions stem from the AFL`s interpretation of the rule. For example, some Holding-the-ball free kicks are played on for the sake of the flow of the game. Unfortunately, all this does is increase decent towards us and create double/inconsistency within the game.

    What a bloody disgrace the Keays non goal was. Cost the crows finals. If you want to see the most biased umpiring ever seen have a look at how the umpires favoured Richmond in the 2017 Grand Final. Truly disgusting.

    Interesting how "AFL History" barely covers the past 5-8 years, as there were plenty of umpiring brainfarts prior to a lot of these.
    That said, outside of the Keays' incident this year, I'd rate Sirengate over all of these, let alone Tom Hawkins receiving a handball while he was out of bounds and kicks a goal from outside the boundary line.. I want to say that was in a Grand Final as well.

    that Dockers-Saints holding the ball fiasco was such a joke... like yes the Saints player got pinged holding the ball, he took enough steps to get rid of it, I wont say that was a wrong call, but it shouldn't have been a call that needed to be paid either... the play should've have been continued after the first call was missed as we all know

      @@jr87-87 That's always been my take on it. Everyone knows what he was trying to do, but Rioli did basically everything right to get away with it - be in the vicinity of where the ball will be landing (holding your ground), eyes on the ball, and made a movement towards the drop of the ball as it landed to simulate a genuine attempt at a mark - which he would have been able to take if Sheed wasn't there. He was 100% doing it to block Maynard out, but he could genuinely claim to be holding his ground for a contested mark. If he doesn't do any of those things, the umpire is paying a free kick for a block. Rioli simply did it well enough to get away with it.

    Jeremy Cameron wasn't paid the mark because it was touched, if you weren't death you'd understand that. Also, Maynard engaged with Rioli, Rioli had his eyes on the ball so where's the block? How about when Howe should've been pinged for holding the ball but wasn't in our goal square and then Collingwood kicked a goal? That could've robbed West Coast the premiership. Do you like making yourself look stupid? Because you wouldn't have made those examples if you don't.
