how many times have you seen a 5v reference wire shorted to ground? these are non fused circuits so they designed them with safe guards to prevent damage.if it can a short to ground they can handle test lights
if you want to still be safe for peace of mind you can use a led test light as they draw 0.003a or better yet get a 12v to 5v usb cigareete lighter adapter and hook your led to this 5v usb and there you have a worry free way to test cpu wires.

I just use my Fluke for everything. One less tool to carry and the meter will do everything the light will do.

You would put the multimeter on volts to use it as a test light
If you connect the light tester to a battery I can see how you can damage the ECU but what if you connect the tester to a screw or just a random metal. Can you still damage the computer when checking the fuses.
no thats what is for,these cpu circuits are tuffer then people think.if you are scared of damaging cpu you can buy a LED test light that say "computer safe" as LED only draw 0.003a where average incandecentsw draw 0.20a or so.
