This makes me very happy. I'm sure it's older than you are. You have great technique and pick control. The metal slide really sings. Wonderful tone. Thanks Youngblood!
Colin, Outstanding job. I've wanted to learn this tune for years. The A tuning is a bit different then the conventional way I tune to A and it threw me off for a little while but I figured it out. When the Album came out in 1974, I used to work in North Miami Beach and I would always pass by that house on the way to work. It is one of my favorite Clapton albums, lots of great songs on it. Thanks for the posting ! Evan
Evan Gusar Wow, thank you Evan for that comment! I can only imagine how it was to live in 70s Florida. Really appreciate your insight into my humble production. That's a great fun to record it and it pays off with that interesting comments.
Incredible. You know I’ve been listening to MC for years and just assumed Clapton overdubbed the slide. He probably did play the opening riff and the slide in the same take! An old HBO show from the Eighties used this as their theme music. Not Necessarily The News - I think it was

Just watching yet again, all your clips. This version of Motherless Children is superb, I know it is a direct copy but even so, it is excellently done. The body language shows the same Claptonesque tilt of the head, absolute concentration and everything else...... top man, well done, keep it up..!!
That is one of the best comments I have ever got on my channel. I'm taken by the fact that you keep coming back to these videos and you watch them with such attention to details! Thanks!

Very well done, my friend. I've been playing this in open E for years, knowing all along it wasn't the way Eric played it. Thanks to your video, I'm now playing it in the proper key and tuning which also happens to be easier to play.
Have you reached out to EC? He would be so thrilled knowing you knew his catalog note for note, perhaps you should tour with him. Lifelong Clapton fanatic and I can’t even come close to any of this!
I bought vinyl when reissued in 1983. , learned all the songs, played many of them with bands and never, until I saw your video, thought that it should be played differently. I use open tunings regularly, but this song I played with standard tuning. Time for old dog me to learn new trick. Bravo! (And thanks for this lesson video :))

Hey, great job with that slide. Now slide guitar, that was an area I never really put many hours on. I have a "bottleneck" (or two) bought ages ago but I never got it right so I stop using it. But you definitely got it.
Thank you! To be true, I've never practiced slide playing. I've just tuned my guitar to an open tuning, put this pipe on my finger and tried to get the notes right. I only sit and play slide when I have to (i.e. when it's in the song I want to cover). Some day I'll try to master it ;)
***** You know, Clapton wasn't much into slide guitar. I've read somewhere that it was after playing with Duane Allman (himself a master slide guitarist) on the Derek & the Dominoes that he decided to try it. This was probably one of his first songs written around a slide guitar riff.
BadSpeech I've also covered Anyday by Derek and the Dominos. I think that's the first song when he really uses the slide. Motherless Children is a cover of a song written by Blind Willie Johnson but, you're right. Duane had as much influence on Eric's slide playing as Delaney Bramlett on George Harrison's.
You were able to achieve that ES sound on a solid body, tough. I really dig the transition from fret to fret with the slide and the little twang at the end, just enjoyable to watch. Hey man I noticed you always put the vinyl in the background of the artist which is cool but I was wondering do you play LP's?
I was waiting for your comment man. I just smile when I see that there's 'stkbkr1' mentioned in notifications bell. Yes I love LP's. I have a record player and a small collection including: JJ Cale, Dylan, Clapton, Pink Floyd and others. Love that cracking sound. Thank you for your attention ;)
Question for Colin or subscribers: New to open A tuning and was wondering which one your using here. I have seen videos here where the D G B goes up to E A C# but people complained they were popping strings. I have also seen videos where the D G B moved down to C# E A which of course takes less tension off the strings. With the notes being different in these two examples, I'm guessing one or the other won't work when trying to play the right notes on the given strings? Thanks, Garry.
The tuning is E A E A C# E - when you play all strings open, it should sound just like an A chord on the standard tuning. Tune it carefully and use new strings so it won't break.
Just found your channel today - some very sweet playing indeed. Nice! Appreciate this is a while ago now, however, do you recall how you got the tone for this track? Reverb, Gain? Delay settings etc? What did rig where you using, how you recorded it? Mic from amp into a DAW? Straight from amp to a DAW? You've got a really nice touch and sound; my mate who lives near Cranleigh, Surrey would be well impressed. ;-)
Hello, it goes like this: Stratocaster > Line 6 POD Studio UX1 > Laptop > Amplitube 3 > Fender amps addon > Fender '57 Champ > Tone 5, Volume 11. For the slide part, Volume is cranked to 12. Let me know if you need anything else, and thanks for the good words!
Hi Colin, Many thanks indeed for the steer - I'm amazed you can remember the setup :-). Got a couple of queries I hope you can advise on. Evan Gusar (below) mentioned your Open A tuning as being a bit different to the conventional way. My understanding of Open A is 6th to 1st string as follows.... E A E A C# E. Is that how you tuned it? If not, what was different? Comparing with your setup, I have a Stratocaster that is plugged into Line 6 GX which connects via USB into Laptop. So far fairly similar I think you'll agree? Laptop hosts POD Farm V2.59 which the GX "talks to". POD Farm output depends on what tone POD Farm is set to and this then feeds into Ableton Live DAW (for recording and mixing) and of course out to speakers from the laptop. Excuse my ignorance here (maybe the UX1 is different to the GX) but I assume the UX1 needs to have a tone that is set in POD Farm before the UX1 signal is passed into Amplitude 3? If so, what sort of tone did you use? If not, then can you keep me honest here? Does the UX1 simply pass the guitar signal straight into Amplitube 3 bypassing POD Farm? I assume you are using Amplitube 3 as a standalone application rather than a VST plug-in into a DAW e.g. Ableton Live. Are you using it standalone? Ive not used Amplitube 3 before so downloaded the free version yesterday and will have a look at it shortly. Acknowledge you've used the Fender Amps Add-on. Any "gotchas" you know about getting it hooked up and running? Finally, Ive also got an HD500 and Amplifi 150, so might be able to emulate what you have via using whats available on those systems e.g. whilst Amplifi dowsnt have a 57 Champ Amplifi does have a 58 Tweed B-Man, a 53 Small Tweed and a 60 Tiny Tweed. Intuitively, which do you think is best placed for the job? Once again many thanks for your kind advice. You've some great covers on here. :-)
Just a quick follow up. Been tinkering on Amplfi and got the beginnings for something like your great sound. Using a 58 Tweed B-Man with a touch of a Classic Distortion stomp box. Not as good as yours as yet though LOL :-). You got any other settings you could let us have that you've used on any of your other videos?
Hey, the tuning is as you wrote above (just an A chord played on open strings). I am using Amplitube 3 as a stand alone application, I don't use it as a plug in to any DAW. I am recording the take in Amplitube's built-in recorder and then export it to my desktop and drag to... believe or not... Audacity where I mix it with the original track (I don't need anything more fancy right now). I don't know about any good ticks to set it up, you just install that and you're good to go. I don't know which one is best: 53, 58 or 60 Tweed. You just need to try it out and hear for yourself I suppose. Thanks for the good words!
There's is no magic behind me remembering all of these settings... I just have them saved in Amplitube! I can't share all of them (no time and option now) but if you are interested in any other, particular tone used on my covers, I can check if I saved it and share with you. You can always send me an email at: kamil.stachowski@hotmail.com and I can send you some screenshots.
Hi Colin, I have been trying to play this song correctly, but always used a standard tuning. I just never worked. Great seeying you do this in open A. I was wondering could you sent me the TAB? @@ColinStachowski oh hi. hey great job and ill search for it..... when i read the description a couple of years ago i thought it said played in "a open" tuning ...not "an" open tuning so i tried it that way but couldnt make it match up to yours, next i watched every thing on youtube that even spoke of the song and i kept skipping over one that was in Japanese....finally i broke down and watched thinking at least i can see him play it even if i dont speak Japanese. it was like i understood the tone of his words and the first thing he did was show how to tune it. From the big string fi\down its E A E A C E but that being as it may I still cant mimic your fingering and voicing of the notes..... so i wonder if you were in Aadd4 which is the same but the big string is D. hope this inspires you to play it again for us now that you have hair on your chin>. :). oh i found it. ruclips.net/video/TNIPA2uzKbs/видео.html

lufkin456 I did not look at it that much, but my action on this Strat is quite low so I must remember not to press the slide as much to the strings as on my acoustic one. But it does not hoover at all.
Brilliant. All of it and the slide is killer. A great record, and you can hear how all over the place he was mentally, in his healing etc. Be well.

Standard tuning?
Don't remember now, I've answered it somewhere in the comments. Cheers!
An open tuning ? Which 1 ?
I don’t remember, please check the comment section.
@@ColinStachowski some suggested Open A but beyond very old Hawaiian music that's a really rare open tuning for slide.
Either open A or open E, I can't remember but I'm leaning towards open E. Check them both and let me know!
i'm kind of curious to know what 3 people didn't like about this, is it they just have no taste in music or no concept of someone's playing ability. personally i think it's jealousy. rock on young man
Well, you will always have someone that will not like it for one reason or another. Can't please everyone I guess...
well i guess i think if you're going to "not like" something maybe a bit of time should be given to express why
Funny how most of that you weren't even touching the slide to guitar
lufkin456 I did not look at it that much, but my action on this Strat is quite low so I must remember not to press the slide as much to the strings as on my acoustic one. But it does not hoover at all.
Ok well good job on the song.one of my favorite clapton tunes
Great job. Where did you get tabs from ?
From my head. Everything that you see on my channel I have figured out by ear.
You could have said you were in open a tuning, so your unsubscribed!
Well... ok!
Open A?
+Nick paflas Yes!
Standard tuning collin?
