Hey zach, just wondering if you could give us like a ranked list or a best for list of recovery sandals/slides like birks crocs yeezy slides and stuff like that… really been wondering which ones I should get and you’re the most trustworthy shoe reviewer out there fr!
I heard in an interview with the designers that MJ was more involved in the 39 than in previous models. He wanted a shoe that felt like you shouldn’t have to break them in, and that it was inspired by his cross step. Which begs the question: why would they not add a shank plate? What’s the logic?
Zach!!! I was anxious for this teardown. Extremely disappointed as I was excited to see where Nike took advantage of the opportunity to improve with some of the best features from the 38's... but, as always loved the breakdown. Thank you!
Summary: Without outrigger and reasonable rigidity, these shoes provide minimal support and protection. Don't play in it unless you want your ankles wasted
These shoes sound awful. So much good going on, but Chris at Weartesters said they were sooo unstable, his ankles were killing him after any session. This backs that up entirely.
You really have to get the shoes yourself an come to your own consensus. I wore them in store before buying and have hooped in them for about a week now and they are amazing to me. I’m honestly shocked to see the negative reviews because they are up there with the Jordan 34, 29, and 28s in my opinion. All depends on your play styles and your build.
All about affordability and inflation. I’m usually fan of AJs BB shoes but gonna be a hard pass on 39. I really loved 36, 37 but this new one will not be on my rotation.
I just played in this earlier tonight. I had 3 12 minutes game and I didn’t experienced any issues whatsoever. I’m 47 yrs old, 6’ tall and 172lbs and not a shifty type of player but does lots of running and jumping and I can say the Jordan 39 performs well to my expectations! I’m looking forward in getting another pair soon.
I’d be wearing these casually so I’m excited after this review - I’ve wanted ZoomX and Zoom Air on top of eachother in a Jordan for a minute. The lack of a shank actually makes me more excited to get a pair of these since it would be solely casual. Thanks for all the great info per usual 👍
@@rantanamo I mean something like Way of Wade 11 and Li Ning Gamma is way ahead in tech, Nike's Zoom X is from 2018 and they have yet developed a successor to it.
I've been hooping seriously since 2013 and have collected every Jordan flagship since the XX8. The buck might just stop here. The 37s tore up my toe skin and I just haven't been getting enough run in the 38s due to work load. It's been a good run overall.
Hey Zach, Would be great if you could test some of these shoes: • Nike hyperattack •Lining 10 speed •anta shockwave 5 pro (It’s never too late to review a basketball shoe)
The Air Jordan line was/is of course a performance shoe just like other signature sneaker lines. But what made Jordan brand into the massive success that it is, is it's use in the lifestyle sneaker market. In the 80's and 90's and 2000s, it became a luxury fashion statement. These days hoopers play in Kobes and rock Jordans for casual everyday off court stuff. This is Jordan Brand just admitting that 1, it's mainly older guys (Gen X) who will buy these and 2, use them mainly for just walking around. So comfort is key and performance is not so key.
These shoes have been outstanding for me. For reference I’m 6’6 220 and wear size 13. I have an athletic of play( rebounding, dunking, pull up jumpers etc) I’ve never felt any lack of containment or instability so far but have only played in these 3 times each 2.5 hour sessions. Top of my rotation so far.
I’m just getting back into basketball shape and I’m in my 40’s, so as a shoot around shoe I’m interested, but I still find it disappointing that it’s so inconsistent. I’ll probably still get them once they’re discounted but they’ll be for light workouts. I’m not totally convinced they’re not holding out on us because the 40 is a milestone number.
Now I know why I easily got injured. I like to wear comfortable shoes, too comfortable like this kind of shoes & playing them like an all around basketball player. Thank you so much @footdoctorzach for the honest review.
Would have been a 10 for me, but the instability in the outer edge of heel.. it sinks... can lead to ankle rolling. But it's comfortable. Jordan Brand should try to fix that issue before releasing more
Get with goods and services or Steve from Bedos leather works, I’d love to see a collab where you make a shoe with another RUclipsr cobbler…… man that would be epic, the highest quality, the most functional shoe, awesome! I’d buy the shoe in a heartbeat even if it was like $500. I just bought these shoes yesterday for my son. He was insisting on Panda Dunks size 11. Now his feet are hurting, so I got these Jordan 39’s for him that come today. I’ll update this post once he’s worn them for a week. Stay tuned!!! Zack, keep up the good work!!!!
Great review Dr. A lot of people seem to complain about stability on the Jordan 36. However, I had no issues with stability or maintaining balance when I' was stopping and going. We must work on getting our balance corrected instead of always relying on the shoes.
Air Jordan version of KD11, at least it’s wide foot friendly, too bad the lateral containment isn’t good & stable enough, it all depends on your ankle strength
This could probably have a SE version similar to the 34s where they fixed alot of the issues of those (although the regular 34s are alot better than these in terms of playability). This looks like a basketball turn lifestyle shoe similar to the John Elliot x LeBron Icon.
I wore a Zamst A2-DX stability of shoe issue is remedied and really need to lace up and tighten shoes to your foot after a play or two. Then I think it is a top tier
Nike showing that they're just not a good performance brand anymore. They have the Sabrina 2 and the GT Cut that people like, but there's nothing else I'd ever consider over a shoe from Chinese brands or Adidas. Sadly Asics doesn't sell their performance basketball shoes here in the US, as far as I know at least
Ahhh, that’s really disappointing to hear. Was really excited for the full length ZoomX and Air Zoom. But I’m honestly not surprised with this review when I saw in the specs that this shoe didn’t have no shank or lateral frame to stabilize the shoe overall.
I got the black ones once they came on stock, they look okay but they amazed me with comfort, I’m using them daily now not for ball rlly, played a few times, basically they demand u to be stable they aren’t my favourite shoe for balling they r just not stable but, they r one of the most comfortable if not the most comfortable shoe ever, I have and owned all infinity runs and gt cut 3 and imma be honest this is way more comfortable, my only problem is these get rlly warm I don’t rlly care but if u do keep that in mind. Honestly if u want comfort and a shoe for daily use these r better than boosts, infinity runs and thus literally the best option for comfort, the fit and stuffing for the ankle and tongue r perfect for me, I have a higher arch and it still is perfect, I didn’t have blistering issues but that’s me, my conclusions is I wouldn’t recommend them too much for bball unless stability is not a consideration for u, but for daily use these r fire 🔥🔥🔥u will not get better comfort, it crashes the comfort of any pure zoom x shoes. That my opinion.
Thanks doc! It’s really sad to see how far Nike has fallen so fast. There’s a big, big problem when a flagship performance shoe is now more suited to be a casual shoe. Just sad.

Would’ve loved to grab these. At this rate, I’ll just have to buy a Jordan 38 low on sale if I want a new pair to hoop. The summer releases from Nike have been so weak
So call me crazy, but I think the Black Lumier colorway has a shank in it. I'm not kidding. When I tried bending them side to side or laterally, they were fairly stiff. Maybe they just screwed up and didn't put one in the white colorway.
My two cents: Jordan Brand's misstep was not marketing this as an upscale lifestyle shoe, a la the AJNT23, and meanwhile developing a more stable and rigid version of the 39 as this year's game shoe, which they could have done by adopting a shank-based support setup simlar to the LeBron 11, a trivial task given how closely the two shoes resemble each other. Just in terms of the sheer quality of the upper, this is the nicest game shoe I've seen from JB since the Jordan 2011, to the point that I will most likely collect the complete run of colorways. It sucks that it's no good for basketball, but my basketball days are long behind me, so as long as the shoe feels good to walk around in I'm good.
I feel the same. Hopefully this gives way to a very good Jordan 40. I'm not putting my hopes up though. It seems like they change designers nowadays. It's like they take turns designing the main shoe.
Trae Young wear these. but he wears Zamst braces and probably have an insole that provides some stability ... when he does his alley oops where he jumps, I hold my breath everytime he comes down
Think I mentioned it in your last review even. No shank is just insane. Do you have any idea why this is the 2nd ZoomX basketball shoe with basically no shank? I guess they might become walk around and practice shoes. Because sounds like the foam is so expensive that they decide to cut costs, which just doesn't make any sense. They're also just so minimal and beautifully made shoes.

- Asics Sky Elite FF 3
- Mizuno Wave Momentum 3
- Nike React HyperSet
I’m thinking of getting these for volleyball, and pairing with a Vktry since they’re full length carbon. Hoping that gives it the stability it needs, and maybe it’ll make some of the pluses from the vktry shine too, since they’re hit or miss.
