There is usually more to Poulenc than meets the ear --- always accessible, usually immediately enjoyable, and yet never commonplace or predictable. His wonderful music often (as here) alludes to the music of past composers, but it still seems fresh and original. The ghost of the March from Tchaikovsky's Pathetique is lurking in the 2nd movement, combined with a gorgeous legato tune. And what a great recording and performance! Many thanks.

aha. I hear snatches of kids folk songs since it is subtitled "Farewell to Youth" Bittersweet Nostalgia. Can't return. But can in memory. CHEERS!

I didn't care much for it at first, despite enthusiastic comments from my conductor and other players, but through repeated listenings it's grown on me.

Poulenc is a composer that gets better more music you know: I am a student and at first i was weirded out by poulenc, but the more to different music(not his), the more i feel like i love him more and more. It is incredible how much varied style poulenc from his choral works to his fun concerto champetre while being weirdly coherent and true to himself.
now it is at the point that i am sure that he is my favorite composer.

Einfach faszinierend!

Love this piece. It has a subtitle from the composer, "Farewell to youth," reflecting fondly on childhood with snatches of kids rhymes. The ending starting a few seconds before 27 minutes is one of the most bittersweet of any score like this.

The best version on RUclips ever! It's brisk - especially iv - but shapely, and I love the 2nd violinist who's clearly taken by the work's impish humor. Many thanks from the U.S., and I hope the maestro and all the musicians have stayed well since the performance.

Beautifully interpreted. And wonderfully heart felted, the two gentle sides that of the orchestra and the conductor in harmonious collaboration.

Mr. Järvi, as Mahler would have said: Nicht Schleppen!!! This is the peak of modern 20th century music, stick to the tempi please! There is no romantic freedom in this work, instead sarcasm. La liberte sounds very different for the master Poulenc! "Tres Gai" ;)
