  • The Siu Nim Tao (小念頭) form, often translated as "Little Idea" or "Little Thought," is the foundational form of Wing Chun kung fu. It emphasizes fundamental principles such as relaxation, proper structure, and centerline theory. Practiced primarily in a stationary position, it consists of precise movements that develop basic techniques like punches, blocks, and stance transitions. Siu Nim Tao serves to cultivate mindfulness, balance, and the core concepts essential for more advanced Wing Chun training.
    GM Milos Drakulic performs the SNT form and walks us through 5 common mistakes to avoid.

    Fully Locking out the arms, is how you develop hyper-extension joint problems. Ask GM Steve Lee Swift. Due to this, his elbow pops every time he throw a punch... and its extremely painful for him. The difference in penetration from a full lockout, rather than locking right before it.. can be as short of a distance, as a Single Centimeter...
    SO, the reality, is that if you want depth of penetration, you just need to use deeper steps in your footwork (get closer to the OP, before you punch).
    This is actually a VERY common PROBLEM with many WC practitioners (and teachers). Since most of the WC Hand Drills are not actually in proper Striking Range... people get used to that range... and just ASSUME that it is the exact same range in the drills... as it is in Combat application (its NOT!).
    The drills are done out of range, to be more Safe for training... while allowing the drills to be Cyclical (nonstop looping). This also allows for a completely Static Stance in the first level material (allowing 100% focus on the arms and upper body ONLY)... rather than adding in footwork as well... which could be way too much for a beginner to focus on Both, at the same time.
    Additionally.. if you get used to fully locking your arm out... Be prepared for a good OP to be able to easily use an ARM Breaking movement on your attempted strike. That, or if they are being NICE... they will just catch your arm, and merely execute a very painful Arm Lock (Chi-Na / Chinese Standing Grappling methods).
    Furthermore... when you have no bend at all in your arm... you also open more of your ribcage up to counter-strikes. So even a hair bend, adds a little more protection against that. But as Ive said.. the biggest issue, is Hyper Extension injuries (often called "Tennis Elbow")
    A lot of WC practitioners might not suffer from such an injury.. due to very minimal training time and effort. Where as Swift, was training hardcore... to the point where it destroyed his joint. Now... if you are hitting a sandbag... you have much less to worry about, because the impact with the bag, tends to prevent over-extension. Where as most of these injuries are happening in the open air.
    One thing to realize, is that if you do get a hyper extension injury... its permanent. You will suffer unbearable pain, for the rest of your life.

    I was a Sifu in the Moy Yat system a long time ago. Aside from the few differences towards the end of the form, it's nice to see that I was generally doing it the way you were. Why is that important to me? I was thinking about rebooting my WC with you. I always thought that the WC I learned was lacking in everything the Leung Ting system had. That's why I stopped doing WC altogether..sold my Jong, etc. I hope to reach out to you in real-time at some point to discuss this further. In the meantime, I will tweak my 1st form to look like what you did. Best wishes.

    Also, you left out the most important part of the 1st form: The Slow Motion section. The part of the form thats repeated 3x in a row, is called: "Three Prayers to Buddha". Rather than taking less than 3 min... its supposed to take at least 16 min. At least 30 seconds to fully extend your arm... and 30 seconds to fully retract it. This section is specifically designed to develop "Internal Power"...
    Realize this: The Three Prayers Section... is the ONLY part of the WC form, that is performed 3 times in a row. Do you wonder why that is? Its to show how much more Important this section is... for your internal developments.
    Not only are you supposed to do the form slow in the 3 Prayers section... But also... in order to get the proper minimal internal development... you have to repeat the entire form, at least 4 times in a row (without any rests between each set). This will get you to just over 1 hours worth of time... which is the Standard amount of time that it takes, to create enough stress on your joints... for them to start to Develop into "Super Strong Tendons" (among many other developments). Additionally, you will have to do these 1hr sessions, at least every other day... probably for a least 3 consecutive months, before you will get the results desired.
    By performing the movements extremely slow (always in front of a mirror, when you are at a beginner level)... and at a uniform / controlled speed... you start to develop "SURGICAL" level of precision in your muscular control. You also start to develop a whole other level of bodily awareness levels... as your brain develops a whole set of new Neural Connections. When this happens... you will no longer have to "SHIFT" your focus from your arms/upper body to your lower body/legs. You will be aware of every part of your body... all at Once... all of the time. While standard drills and practices, will partially get you to a decent level of awareness... it will never be as "Conscious" as if you had done the slow-mo training method.
    You also should be breathing with your full lung capacity (upper lungs, and lower abdomen).. paced with your movement speeds... throughout the entire form... ESPECIALLY in the slow motion section. This is part of the Qi-Gung development... which eventually will make your tissues have much greater Circulation Channels. This will lead to a whole other level of performance / abilities.
    The benefits go beyond even those which Ive listed here. But suffice to say... that your WC fighting abilities Rise to a whole other level... when you have developed a certain level of "Internal Power" results.

    Nice tips about the first form. Question: do you think the Kim yeung ma stance is useful for actual combat or is it just for training? Cuz I saw you using it for demo purposes but I find it way too rooted, which is great for solo training. Thanks and keep up the good work!

    • @MYVLMA
      @MYVLMA  23 дня назад +1

      The Kim Yeung Ma is or prefighting stance, but can also be used in a close combat situation, when needed. It should be practiced to get strong legs but not being stiff or rigid. Practice explosively starting from your IRAS and you will see how mobile you will be.

    Another great video again thanks. Can you explain your philosophy on how much muscle tension there should be when doing SLT (and later Chum Kieu and Bil Ji)
    I like doing SLT 2 ways:
    sometimes with high dynamic tension (very tiring) that builds strength and structure in the movements
    and other times doing it relaxed
    So that in the application you can be very relaxed and fast and mobile - but you also have significant strength "of THE RIGHT KIND" when you need it, to switch on and off quickly at the right times
    What do you think about this?

    • @MYVLMA
      @MYVLMA  23 дня назад +2

      You can do the form in three different ways. Very slow and precise to execute every movement correctly. Than you can focus on the stretching of your arms, and than as it should be done fluently with a change of dynamic and relaxing.
      Every thrusting/striking movement should be executed powerful and all other movements relax but not sloppy.
      Make sure that your stance is strong but not stiff or rigid.
      Every form has its own way of execution because of the motto and meaning they teach you.
      Thanks for asking and watching.

      @@Johnacegaynor I‘ve made some other experiences. Why is it that the SEK (a german elite soldier unit) trains wing Chun IF it is sooo bad? Because it‘s not made for the ring. This guy is by far one of the best wing Chun RUclipsrs i found on the internet and yes, most are representing the system in a bad way, that is true! But if you find someone like him, you can clearly tell the difference. And „it‘s already proven“ i can say to everything, because every system loses. It‘s not the system, it‘s the person. It is ALWAYS the same: if a boxing guy f.e. looses to a wing Chun guy the people comment „he wasn‘t a good boxer“ and if the wing Chun guy looses they wrote „told ya!“ :D
      I think most of the people already made their mind and then you can do nothing to prove them wrong. Even if you invite them to challenge you, they like „naaaah, i already know it‘s not working“ haha. Yes, it‘s like arguing with a flat earthler. ^^ you can‘t change their mind, not even with logic. In German there is a saying for that „Wasch mir den Pelz, aber mach mich nicht nass.“ which kinda translate like „wash me, but don‘t make me wet.“ It‘s impossible. Anyways, i wish you best of luck on your future way and I hope you never run into a guy like him in a real fight. =)
