  • Arianna Huffington stops by the Googleplex for a conversation with Rachel Whetstone about "Thrive". You can find more info on Google Books: goo.gl/C8qNO2
In April 2007, after years of around-the-clock work to launch and build The Huffington Post, Arianna Huffington collapsed from exhaustion and lack of sleep, injuring her eye and breaking her cheekbone. It was a bloody wake-up call, forcing her to ask herself: is this what success looks like? Is this the life I wanted? In terms of the traditional measures of success, which almost exclusively emphasize money and power, she was very successful. But she was not living a successful life by any sane definition. Arianna knew something had to radically change.
Since then, Arianna has dramatically altered the way she lives. Her new book Thrive: The Third Metric to Redefining Success and Creating a Life of Well-Being, Wisdom, and Wonder (on sale March 25) is a call to arms to redefine how we measure success both in our work and our personal lives.
Inspired by her 2013 commencement speech at Smith College and drawing on her experiences as a thought leader and working mother-of-two, Huffington shows how instead of settling for breaking through glass ceilings in broken corporate systems, we can change the system altogether by redefining what success is and what we value the most. Her speech touched a nerve and was quickly followed by conferences in New York, London, Munich and Hawaii, which received international attention and acclaim. The goal of these Third Metric conferences-including the next round this spring in New York, Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles-is to look beyond money and power to include a third metric that recognizes the importance of well-being, wisdom, wonder, compassion and giving.
The way we currently define success leads to burnout, overwork, lack of sleep and being hyper-connected to technology-all to the detriment of our health, relationships, families, and even our careers. It is unsustainable for women, men, our communities, our nation and our planet. We need a revolution in our lives-one that redefines what it means to be successful. Thrive is a vital next step in that conversation.

Amazing women with a great sense of humor. I listened to Tim Ferriss podcast with Arianna and it was a succinct history of her life, achievements and also turbulences. I encourage you to listen to that. Inspirational and action provoking. Thanks.

I have read that unrequited love is the sweetest. I don't know if that is really true. Only those who have experienced unrequited love can say if unrequited love is really the sweetest kind of love. I suppose sleep deprivation caused by losing sleep over Him, and imagining highly dramatic scenes of imaginary "suicide" in future (not now of course) because of the inabilty to "unite" with Him just now ("uniting" with Him in the rather vulgar sense of having illicit s. with Him) really give great joy to loose s. gals (gals = young girls and adult i.e. mature women; mature = ? = with fully developed br. and v.). Wonderful pep talk. Thanks. - G

Arianna, I use to think I was the only woman on the planet that treated women three times better than they treated me, but when you invited to be a contributor writer for Thrive Global, I knew I had been in all the wrong places and now I am alright and happy to be amongst your Wellbeing Tribe... Thank you, Arianna Huffington & the entire Thrive Global Team!

Arianna is so inspiring but do we really need to be reminded to charge our phones outside of our bedrooms? Shouldn't this be natural? Myself included, I feel as if we are losing our sanity to technology. In a few years, we'll be treating our phones, computers, iPads as part of our families, inviting them to sit next to us at the Thanksgiving table.

Kay Song Sadly, folks like myself do need that reminder. BUT I just received an analog alarm clock for my birthday so, yes, my phone can now stay out of my room. #millenialproblems
However, I do see there is a light at the end of the tunnel for the over-connectedness conundrum. 3-5 years ago, my manager expected me to be "always on" with my emails, etc. Nowadays, it seems to be the hot, new thing at work to go on digital detoxes and not check phone/email quite so frequently. Can't complain about that. :)

I also need reminders from time to time. On the other hand, I think we rely too much on others to remind us how to live when things like this should come naturally to us. I find myself listening to what others think I need as suppose listening to my intuition or gut feelings. I hope you're sleeping better. :)

We've really lost it if we need a "coach" for sleep and exercise!! Come on, people, a coach??
I'm surprise they didn't mention an :eat or breath coach:. The techno-lingo - new words for every day concepts - is hilarious.

Actually... The earth IS flat. It is in fact the belief in the heliocentric model that is the delusion. But sure... Sleep. Look after yourself. I agree with that.
