The users saying this is not 5.1 are correct. This video does not have any 5.1 audio associated. But youtube, as of this comment (October 2021) now supports surround sound. Here is the detail.
So for so many years, RUclips only allowed 2 channel playback. Users can upload any surround sound format that RUclips understands. And they will stay in that original format in your account, so you can re-download if you need. I have an account since 2008, but lost my access to it. I used to test RUclips surround sound capabilities by uploading videos like this one to my private channel. It never worked, and neither did this video. All these times, till a few months ago, RUclips will only play stereo down mixed audio (identified by format code 140). And that was the only choice. Even if you download any other sound formats provided by RUclips, they were always in stereo.
Then I recently download one of my own video files back that I needed, understanding that it would be stereo only and I will lose my original 5.1 track. I was surprised to see 6 channels when I loaded it in Audacity.
So I came to my default test track - this one, to check if this one actually every had 5.1 audio. And yes, this one does. There were many other dolby test video tracks on RUclips but I could not extract 5.1 audio from them. Only this one has original 5.1 audio still attached.
RUclips has only enabled this for a few devices and you may not hear 5.1 tracks on many devices yet. Hopefully they will enable that soon for all users.
For those that want to verify themselves, download format id 258 for this video. I did and loaded that into Audacity. I can play and check each tracks individually, and that exactly plays as per the voice over in this video. Here is the image link for the wave forms I see in Audacity

I comment once or twice a year, but had to make this post for the benefit of audiophiles and youtube fans like me.
So how do we listen to the real 5.1 of this in our browser on youtube, or can we?
I have optical to my DD/DTS receiver and it does not detect a DD or DTS 5.1 signal from this video in my browser.
One of my faves of all time. The RM sounds phenomenal.

I love this song and the album might be my favorite of all time. I always thought this song was about the realities and chaotic nature of wars. Does anyone know if it's about a specific war/battle or just war in general?

Jeremiah Seelbach I don't think this refers to any war in particular - it's just one of the issues this album addresses that can drive people insane - money, time, politics (brain damage) and us versus them which is what wars are about.

There is still very good music out there... but it is hard to sift it from the junk that's around it. A needle in a haystack. Back then it was a jewel and there was far, far less music produced. It is one of the greatest albums to me, but believe me if I say that there is still truly good music being made at this moment. The only reason why I can't recall any names of groups, is because as an elderly adult, I'm so pre-occupied with other things, that I can't give myself the time to find it and also to remember the titles or groups which make that kind of good music. One harddrive on my computer has so much music, that, everytime I play it randomly, I'm surprised because of some pieces of music. Pink Floyd is easy for me, and so I carry it on my phone and can listen to it any time... :)
@@SjaakSchulteis People shouldn't look to commercial radio for good music. Same goes for garbage like Spotify and satellite radio. Listen to KEXP for a week and people can hear TONS of great, new music.

What is the source of these songs in 5.1 mix?
Great song and all, but RUclips has NEVER supported surround audio... They have always squashed everything down to 2-channel stereo, it's one of the major complaints with it... They only recently added 5.1 surround on their paying RUclips TV service... Don't test your surround system with youtube audio, you will NEVER get surround sound...
I don't know the history of 5.1 surround on youtube. I've read that the old Flash version worked but then we lost that around 2016 when they phased out Flash.
I do seem to recall having audio choices in settings in the past that are gone now.
But I know that as of December 2021 there are a number of existing older Dolby Pro Logic II test videos along with some others on here that do work beautifully if the user who uploaded it bothers to post what 5.1 format it's done in and you manually switch your receiver/decoder to the matching surround mode.
If you don't know which format its done in and you pick one at random the song might sound totally *spatial* to you on your system but that is not the same as what the original content actually is supposed to sound like at all.
DD and DTS are far better as they usually get auto-detected so you don't have to guess but that auto-detect hasn't happened for me on youtube so far and almost no one bothers to say which encoding format they used for their surround sound uploads when the post.

Hate the vague term “Remastered” with no explanations whatsoever
It's been digitized. It enhances the lows and high along with certain sounds like the sax. It filters out background noise where true music sounds are heard.
Real music, out comes the weed
This, like all RUclips videos, is stereo. Two channels, period. The song was released in the US in stereo. (PF fans know that a quadraphonic 8-track release was done in the UK, but this is not it.)
right- i played this on my apple tv in my living room with 5.1 setup, and i was like wtf it’s only in front of me lol
That 8-track cartridge was also available as both a 4-track master dub discrete version Q8 cart or the crappy SQ-Decode dub onto Q8 cart that was sent to some countries due to bad decisions by greedy labels.
I inherited an original Q8 DSOTM cart in the 80's, that was bought new in the US by the person I inherited it from, that is the 4-track master dub version Q8 in a purple cart case.
I know the difference between the SQ vinyl/cart version and the 4-track master dub because I've heard both and it's night and day difference.
...and sadly, yes, the 2.0 stereo mix-down does not even come close to being as amazing as the original 4-track Q4/Q8 tape Quadraphonic version of DSOTM.
In fact, once you've heard Time, Us and Them, and Money (along with the rest of them) in 4-Track discrete Quadraphonic the flat 2.0 bouncy stereo chaos makes so much more sense and is completely awe inspiring to have sat in the center of.
BUT the down-side is that once you've heard the proper original 4-Track mix (NOT the SQ version!) on a decent system the stereo version will feel like there's something missing, will seem almost boring and even seem like a kind of disappointing experience after you've experienced the original intended surround sound layout of this music.
That's assuming you can appreciate listening without headphones for a truly immersive listening experience.
Note that a typical home theater surround system or PC setup with little cube speakers and a subwoofer also does not do this music the proper justice either.

I'm trying to figure out how one gets TRUE surround sound music from youtube. Not 'remastered'... not upmixed but ACTUAL discreet 5.1 audio.
I've yet to see it.
