    I still enjoy Gundam Wing, because its messages are still relevant: war for profit; the use of unmanned drones and man's place on the battlefield; the nature of Pacifism.

    Whenever I see someone asking "Hey should I watch Gundam Wing" I show them the clip where one character is shouting, off the edge of a cliff for someone to come kill them and then tell them that's the love interest.

      I find my self laughing at the things they do in that show lmao. Initially started watching because of the Tallgeese design and Leo. I left on gundam wing when Heero was "unconscious" face down in the water and I can't get over how everything went down atop that sub. I gotta finish my binge on Victory then I'll finally be gucci with UC and get back on wing

    When i think of gundam wing
    I think heero saying to zechs
    "I'll thank zechs in my own way, I'll kill him, that's how I'll express my gratitude"
    And then zechs responds with
    "That'd be fine"
    Its
    Ridiculous

    don't know what hte message of wing was there was 2 things that i took from it.
    1. Automated machines or Drones are a bad thing, it makes killing so much easier when the reality should be that taking a life is a hard and ugly thing to do.
    2 war without the loss of life is meaningless. this combines with the 1st thing i i got form it. fighting a war that is only destroying machines is meaningless since there is no sorrow or despair attached to the war, therefore war will continue to happen because people aren't suffering. the loss and devastation of a war reminds those who survived or lived through that time how horrible war really is, its dirty, messy and ugly but with Drones or the mobile dolls there is nothing to give an idea or show how bad war is, just a bunch of machines destroying one another but if you were seeing people rip each other apart. your outlook on the conflict is different

    I'm still really new to Gundam (just watched like 10 episodes of G Gundam a month or two ago) and started watching Gundam Wing earlier this week. To be honest? I'm really into the melodrama, just because of how fun it is to be so constantly baffled. Like, Hiiro tries to shoot Relena, another guy shows up to shoot Hiiro, and Relena steps in front of Hiiro to protect him? That shit's wild as hell, I kind of love it! Hard to top the absolute beauty of Hiiro ripping the birthday invite in half and whispering "I'll kill you", though.
    I see what you mean about it being less on the actual mech usage itself, though. Personally, I'm okay with that in terms of what I'm looking for right now, but I'm glad to hear other series get more into it.

    Still holds up to me. But I watch it almost every few years. I learn more the older In age I get and the wiser I become. Start to understand things like what each goal was and why some would purposely loose a fight. You can still achieve your goals by loosing. Kind of an interesting way to look at it. Milliardo still my favorite character in the series.

    It's kind of bizarre, but Relena if anything feels like the most consistently-written character in Wing, given she's basically anime Audrey Hepburn circa Breakfast at Tiffany's. Thinking about the show as some kind of wildly-overblown romantic comedy where one perky socialite tries to cope with the antics of five angsty death commandos is actually quite entertaining... but it ain't much of a drama, sadly.

    Like most people who live in America Gundam Wing is reason why I like Gundam and Mecca as a hole, however yeah I can agree now that it's a very subpar standard series and Gundam and it may be in my top 10 but it's probably at number 10 or 9.
    I wouldn't tell someone to start with Gundam Wing if they were trying to get into Gundam but I would say hey after you watched maybe two series go look at this one.

    Ironically, the anime that got me watching into anime during the Toonami boom was Outlaw Star, and through that I got to watch Gundam Wing. I feel like, while both have aged pretty poorly, time has been much kinder to Outlaw Star compared to Wing. The first has aesthetic, style, a primary cast of characters you actually give a crap about with unique backgrounds and skillsets, a story that has a semblance of coherency. Wing has five pretty boys who are all spies who all pilot gundams with efficacy varying from overpowered to glorified jobber, the story becomes incredibly silly even when you try your hardest not to pay attention to it, and everyone has their moment where the story requires that they do something incredibly stupid, and then the story turns back around to tell us these five children are actually super-intelligent and kind-hearted.
    Thank god Turn A Gundam exists.

    After watching the original Mobile Suit Gundam trilogy when VHS when it first released stateside, I sat through the Wing and felt it was a definite case of style over substance (also felt cheated they hadn’t released Zeta Gundam). It sure looked cool but the plot oscillated between being unintentionally funny, confusing, or just plain strange. I have to wonder how much of the weird pacing and story was due to behind the scenes difficulties or if it was just not very well thought out.

    • @MarvinTurner
      @MarvinTurner 3 года назад +5

      It had A LOT to do with behind the scenes difficulties. Writers getting fired. Producers wanting to quit. Plot points being forced from management. And less than a year to reconcile these things (June to April).

    • @glitterboy2098
      @glitterboy2098 2 года назад

      @pocketheart1450 Год назад

      @@glitterboy2098 I love the series, but yes, these things hurt it. Even in Japanese, the melodrama is sort of incomprehensible, but Gundam Wing's storytelling style is heavily rooted in Kabuki Theater, where the melodrama is the point. To a western audience, it can come off as somewhat forced, or even bizarre, while a Japanese audience will typically get it right away.

    After being heralded as the great toonami classic, Wing turned out to be the most mediocre and hard to sit through series for me as I went through the franchise. Heero Yuy in general felt like a very washed down and simplified cardboard cutout of Chirico Cuvie from Votoms, while the ongoing motive of various identities (Zechs and Lady Une) is executed very questionably. Thats not to say it doesn’t have its merits, there are some neat mobile suit designs for various tastes and the score is fun at times. Duo Maxwell is probably among the least head scratch inducing characters as well as the most likable, and the hilarious level of contrived ”I had it all planned all along” twist at the end with Treize brought back the amount of cheese that was present in the first few episodes. Overall it isn’t the worst in the franchise by a long shot, but is a far cry from being the ideal starting point. Great video and series, Im always excited for a new episode!

    Back when Gundam Wing was released and I was myself a teenager deeply interested in the U.C., I used to refer to it as "Gundam for girls" precisely because it was so melodramatic, and emphasized style over substance. I certainly know now that's a sexist comment, but at the time, it seemed fairly apt given that the only girls I knew who liked any Gundam liked Wing, without any interest at all in even some of the newer, prettier U.C. series, like 08th M.S. Team or 0083.

    Wings big problem is its characters. Wufei is introduced committing a war crime, and then takes a break from murdering trainees in their bedrooms, to be sexist and condescending. The show intends us to root for him.
    Nothing Heero does ever makes a lick of sense, and the show obviously knows this, since it goes to great lengths to constantly tell us how amazing and intelligent he is despite all of the evidence to the contrary.
    Even his name is crazy because he's apparently intended to be a super spy/infiltrator, but he takes the "code name" of an important, assassinated politician from the recent past. That's like a Soviet agent trying to get into the US in the 70's with a passport claiming he's JFK. It does nothing but call attention to how badly his cover was thought out.
    The other three barely contribute to the meandering plot. Though, the same can be said for all of the other periphery characters. I only liked Duo because he's the least awful of the bunch, not because he's actually a good character (also, 12 year old me thought that Death Scythe was MEGA RAD).

    • @ericcaulfield4477

It was based on a spinoff kid's show of chibi gundam and in it there are 3 main "gundam" characters. And this video series has just made me realize that these characters and the dimensions they came from are based off of the UC, G gundam, and wing gundam and this has blown my little mind apart. I think GW had a bunch of big ideas that they had difficulties delivering on. It didn't help that the dub was treated in a kid cartoon style, either. (Some of that stuff is seriously cringe-y, lol.) Also, the voice actor for Relena somehow made many people despise the character in the US, yet she's apparently quite well-liked in Japan.
    I was most invested in the characters. I've been spending the last few days looking back on this series for the first time since I saw it when it aired on Cartoon Network, and I found that the characters are still dear to my heart. This show had a big impact on me... I know I'm not alone in saying that it was the series that made me like serious anime!
    But honestly though, I wish someone would take the effort to remake it. I think it had a lot of promise that just didn't pan out... really, some of the best stuff was in the extras. (I think the manga Episode Zero helps the characters to make more sense, just like Endless Waltz helped with the philosophy.)

    I stayed up every night pass my bed time to watch Wing on ytv. It was a big part of ytv's later block largely I think due to the dub team being Canadian. I think the dub holds up well compared to many anime dubs of the time. And the story while flawed still one of my favs for the concept. While not my fav I still rewatch. 00 being my fav if you exclude its movie.

    I just got done rewatching Gundam Wing. And not gonna lie the suit design pulls it through a lot for me. Never was into the older Gundams. The RX-78 is boring, and while the ZAKU has definitely grown on me over the years. Didn't really do it for me growing up. Having the 5 original Gundams (plus Zero, Epyon, Tallgeese, and the upgrades they get) really made it for me. They were all significantly different from each other. On top of that OZ had the mobile dolls (and also get cooler looking over time. The LEOs while not as iconic as the ZAKU. Do tend to fit the general cannon fodder MS at least in my opinion. They feel more like mass produced military equipment. And it's pretty cool you get to see the Earth Federation still field them after OZ/Romerfeller/White Fang take over as the main bad. All that said if someone new asked if the should watch it? I would probably tell them to just watch Endless Waltz. Cause that has the coolest variants of suits. Then go watch either 08th MS Team, G, or Unicorn. Depending on the person.

    You’re out of your mind... Wing was the best series in Gundam and arguably the best Anime ever... the politics alone makes the show so interesting, especially when your an 8 year old watching and learning politics and diplomacy... call it nostalgic or w/e Wing like you said was the reason Gundam was ever going to be popular in the West

      Honestly wing and IBO are the only gundam series I like, both for the same reasons: lots of factions, cool, but semi grounded in reality mecha, and wildly different personalities wanting different things. And pretymuch all sides have SOME form of ace pilot or advantage they can use in their way.
      The only question remains, who would win in a fight: heero or mikazuki?

    Nothing beats The Original Amaru Ray and Char..But Gundam Wing is like your watching Boybands piloting Gundams..and its a POP! That's why is popular unlike The Original you need to be Adult to understand it
    ..incase of wing you just to Understand the Pilots manuevers..
    And they're Mecha is dope! That's why it's a hit

I watched it through a couple times including ovas and movie..... other than Earth vs colonies and a sense of the character arcs, i still don't quite understand what is going on LUL reading the wiki page of the Frozen Teardrops sequel just added to that confusion too HAHA at least the characters get some resolution in it

    I can't say this show is what made me love mechs and giant robots. That honor belongs to Power Rangers. But this show was my gateway into anime. Which is weird since I watch DBZ and Sailor Moon well before this but I did not see those shows as anime back then.

    Wing did get me into Gundam, and anime on the whole as well.
    As for whether or not I'd say some one should start there, probably not. Gundam 00 exists and is basically 'Wing, but done better' imo, so I'd suggest that before Wing, even if I have .... issues .... with 00s second season that don't exist in Wing.
    Honestly, funny as it sounds, I'd probably suggest Full Metal Panic as a primer for getting into Gundam, since there's a lot of crossover there that would work, plus, FMP is just good civ.

    I havent watched Gundam Wing yet. I've watched 79 (movies), 0080, WITP, CTA, and 8 episodes into Zeta. I thought the 79 trilogy movie was entertaining but some of it looked and sounded pretty rough.. def not sure if i wanna watch the 79 series. That being said, i'm loving the UC timeline and the 79 movies, at a bare minimum, def needs to be involved

    Yeah their plan for ultimate peace is pretty stupid. My favorite bit in the OVA is how they disarm themselves at the start only for an oppressive and armed military force to take over. So our heroes scramble to get their weapons back to beat the military force, then after winning decide “okay guys this time we can destroy our weapons. I’m sure nothing bad will happen ever again……”

    The best part of Wing, in my opinion, was Duo Maxwell. Beyond that? I am of the opinion that IBO does what Wing attempted but far better and without being so...confused. And overly dramatic.

    I had never watched wing outside of the movie. I'm watching it right now...It feels like a retelling of the OG series with cool new 90s MS and way less depth. It's kind of all over the place and hard to follow. I want to watxh zeta however I can't find it anywhere.

    One of the first animes I watched and the Heero/Relena relationship is what sucked me in. It’s more complex and makes more sense in the manga (and gets less toxic over time) the manga is way better, but I still have love for the goofy anime 😎
