Damn this was an incredible year for custom tracks, wasn't it? So many of the choices in this video were incredible courses, and ones that could have been worthy winners in their own right.
But 100% agreed on the winner. Such an awesome track, and one filled with some many charming details and clever design choices!

Funnily enough I commented to the crators video of your Top 1 and said them "I know it's only February, but this is this years best track" and they said thanks but noted that there are more months to come where I said "they gotta top a lot". Shortly before new year I came back and said "still best track period" and they read it again.
Glad more like you agree with me.

It is absolutely astonishing how many masterpieces this community has made this year, every single one of these looks like it could be in the top 10. it's beyond incredible. I joined the CT community this February roughly, so this feels like an incredible showcase of my first year of CT creation. Here's to more incredible tracks in 2024!
PS: That you so much for introducing me to the The Game Brass remix of Let's Hit The Beach, I didn't know anyone else cared about that song enough to make a remix and I'm beyond happy to be proven wrong, it slaps so hard.

Toadette's Castle in 30th place! Fantastic! Finally a spot!
They are great tracks that have released this 2023!
I was predicting that Castle in the Sky will be in 1st and Shy Guy Lumber Co. in 2nd before I saw that. And it seems like I was almost right!
But now it got me thinking that we never seen a Tour track in the top 50. Not even a single one. But they are still great!
Edit: Turns out that there are a few Tour tracks in the top 50. Being Sydney Sprint & Merry Mountain in the 2021 editon.

All of these courses are great and made by really creative and talented people! I'm no track creator and I've never even played a custom track, but if I could be a bit critical as an observer for a moment, nearly every custom track on this list and countless more made over the years suffer from one critical thing: visibility. That can mean a multitude of things, but to name some examples and how Nintendo overcomes these issues in their own tracks:
Lighting - in nighttime or underground tracks, use colors that show up, and include light sources. Even courses that are supposed to be dark should still be fully visible. Take Wario Shipyard for example, it's a dark course, but it's still very well lit.
Road and off-road - make it very clear which roads can and can't be driven on through the use of color, texture, alpha textures, and occasionally obstacles. Also, when the road changes to a different surface like asphalt to dirt for example, there shouldn't be any confusion or doubt.
Where do I go next? - alas, this is the biggest one that the vast majority of custom tracks fall victim to. At any given point in the track, you should be able to clearly see where you're supposed to go next. Arrows and chevrons are great, but should only be used supplementally to the course's terrain or texturing. Not to mention any arrows used should be clearly visible in a fast-paced race. And that's another thing, races go by fast so there shouldn't be too many jumps and sharp turns in quick succession unless they're sufficiently foreshadowed.
Split paths - sort of an offshoot of the previous point. When the track splits, both the split and the joining must be very clear. Roundabouts especially tend to cause issues cause there's the risk of missing the exit and continuing around the circle. Tick-Tock Clock, Peach Gardens, and Daisy Circuit all do roundabouts successfully.
Shortcuts - a lot of custom tracks have elaborate shortcuts and those are fine, but it should still be clear what is and isn't a shortcut, and which shortcuts require a mushroom without relying on a massive sign.
This is the road - three words: Crowd. Control. Fences. A lot of custom tracks have nooks and crannies and side areas that aren't part of the track but are still completely accessible. These spaces may risk distracting or confusing inexperienced players who are still learning the course. Crowd control fences block these sections off, helping the racers stay focused on the intended route. If you want to allow exploration, just put some gaps between them. There's also the advantage of chevrons.
Course elements - if the track has interactive elements, their function and effect should be easy to understand. Ramps are ramps, speed boosts are speed boosts, these obstacles spin you out or knock you over or act as walls, this is a water current or conveyor belt, this surface is icy or muddy, etc.
It always makes me happy seeing custom tracks with good visibility, as it shows the creator went the extra mile to ensure that their course is accessible

    • @JorisMKW
      @JorisMKW 5 месяцев назад +1

Great points, I completely agree with you! Tracks should be easy to drive for players who haven't played them before. If I may add some points to your list which might help creators to make their tracks more intuitive to drive:
      - After a boost or flip trick ramp there should be a section of straight road before the next turn, since the player will be in a boost and thus has less time to react.
      - Boost pads should only be placed to serve a reason, like forcing the player to take other lines like on Moonview Highway, or to make a flip trick ramp give you more air like on Rainbow Road; not to just be a filler for gameplay.
      - If you use arrows (which imo you should on every turn), make sure that they are visible way before the turn is reached. If this is difficult because of how the road is curved for example, try ground arrows. White and yellow borders on the arrows also help to make them stand out more.
      - If you add some 'new' gameplay tech or idea to the track that is not well known, add it in the beginning of the lap without much going on so that the player learns how it works. Example: on Mushroom Gorge the first ramp onto the first bouncy mushroom is there purely to teach the player how the bouncy mushrooms work; you can not fall off this mushroom unless you really try, whereas the othe mushrooms later on on the track are also more tricky to get over. Another example is Lava Road where a bouncy collision type is used all over the track without it being clear how it works. On the first turn this type is used on the entire road so that the player immediately learns how it works. Players that know the track can jump over this part to save time which is also a nice strategy.

watching this video actually made me realize how poor the arrow usage is in some of these tracks. there's so many situations in this video where there's basically zero way to know where to go on your first playthrough without following the minimap. clarity is something that should be aimed for. track creators need to keep in mind that even though they know the layout of their track by heart, it's only because they're the ones who created it; that won't be the same for people who are playing said track for the first time.

We need a different way for playing these tracks online like Ctgp, The people that's in control of the track selection in Ctgp are so blinded by nostalgia that we still have 10+ year old janky tracks like the abomination Mushroom peaks, there is so many actual good tracks that get forgotten or unappreciated that could replace those outdated tracks, like it took them forever just to add rainbow road 64 like come on

I got an idea for a series you could do. How about you do a video for each retro track in Mario Kart history in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and showcase every single remake you can find for that specific track, For example you could have GBA Luigi Circuit and showcase all the remakes you can find for that course and then have people decide which one is the best
