    In this episode of Backstage With Millionaires, Caleb discusses ONDC with founders of Gogappi, Arvind Sekhar and Samhitha Kotaamasu, one of India's first ONDC buyer apps.
    Gogappi is one of the first startups on ONDC.
    ONDC is short for Open Network for Digital Commerce, it is an initiative by the government of India to promote an open network for exchange of goods and services over the Internet. This basically means that the government is trying to create a level playing field for all the small business owners in India. ONDC is promising same power and features to these small owners that big e-commerce companies like Flipkart and Amazon have.
    ONDC can be a game changer for these small businesses as now you won’t have to pay anything to reach all these customers. All you have to do is list yourself with ONDC and customers across the country can find you from any application of their choice. The government has compared this with ‘hypertext transfer protocol for information exchange over the internet’ where you could reach millions of customers without spending anything. Next big issue right now for D2C brands is efficient inventory management. ONDC promises to solve this by standardizing operations like cataloging, inventory management, order management and order fulfillment. This would mean that as a small seller, you could use any ONDC compatible application and you don’t have to worry about managing everything on your own.
    It will be interesting to see how ONDC unfolds in India. An open network for doing business will certainly give confidence to millions of retailers and small brand owners to come online and do business and we could see thousands of unicorns in the future just from taking this direct-to-customer approach. However, we as buyers have become very comfortable and spoiled with the services provided by these e-commerce giants, from order tracking to return and refund, we tend to get aggrieved with every small issue we face. And this would be a challenge for ONDC to solve.

    It is interesting to see these kiddos confidently invest their time and money in the wrong direction. They will learn a lot.

      ​@@zhinkunakur4751 Ooof where do I begin. There are tooo many incorrect assumptions these youngsters have made. For example, that CEO said "if you nail user experience, then guarantee you'll get customer" ...
      This is NOT true in the real world. Especially NOT for the highly segmented / broken street food TAM.
      They first need to first do basic customer validation by checking to see if customers really want their value proposition or not.
      They will again fail if they try this. Its best if they hire a senior executive(mentor / board advisor) at their company.
      But unfortunately, I can already tell you that such experienced people in India will never work for them lol.

      ​@@marcusravi1684I have worked in a company which believes in the highest quality which includes user experience as they believe that there are no or less competitors for the highest quality. They have been thriving by this logic for the past 130 years.

      I'm in a service based company. The only advantage we have over competition is user experience, we are far behind in every other way and we have seen continuous growth over 5 years in terms of market share. Customers are happy to pay more.

    Every ONDC video I see has these words thrown around but noone really explains how is it going to work.
    - Protocol
    - Platform
    - Buyer app
    - Seller app
    Why is no one talking about how will discovery of sellers work? How much commission would a buyer app charge the seller for enabling discovery how much commission would seller app charge for enabling order flow, payments etc. This guy mentioned 10-15% commission, I heard somewhere ONDC will charge 2-3% commission. If there's still going to be so much commission what is the benefit for seller.
    Additionally who owns the customer experience? How will I know the T&Cs of anything before buying from any seller.
    If a seller is running a coupon on their current seller platform and I discover this seller on a different buyer side platform will this coupon be shown on buyer side platform as well? Many such unanswered questions

      There will be a central server for all of this. Just like UPI. The same company is going to provide sdk and protocols for whole system/other companies. And yes there will be someone who is going to pay the price in the chain. Simply, Idea is to create transparency and ease of online shopping and selling experience to everyone in the system.

    I don't completely agree with just going with user experience because it will work with different kinds of products like social media or some fitness related, but I feel that in e-commerce and any service providing products should mainly focus on ease, trust and better service compare to competitors

    Indian customer expect too much for too little as much as company owners expect from employees
    Actually this produces the situation of customers expecting too much for too little as they have only too little

    ONDC isn't for people selling Diet Coke. It's probably more for the likes of cottage industries, creators and artisans, to sell what they make and sell locally. The target seller persona seems to be the non-english speaking natives.
