@@Emma-qo4no music is subjective so original version from the songwriters and singers will always be classic and great but vocally and arrangement wise Sohyang version wins hands down. With her gospel take and vocal delivery it’s a completely different song so yes, it’s moves me more than the original version and is the best version imho.
Arirang will give you even more of that Disney song feel, even though it's more than 600 years old! It's sortof a national anthem to many Koreans, and is the only(?) song that made it twice into the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list.

You just won't believe the other performances. I don't know if I would have this in my top 7 or so. The others are that good. Arirang Alone from immortals songs 2 is one of the best. She takes her mix belt higher in Lean on Me, Mona Lisa, and Everyone. Honestly those are all more impressive. I have nothing cover is as well. I will always love you cover too. Misty. Home. Breathe. Those if I were a vocal coach I would love to see. No one reacts to Breathe, like just watch all of that without even reacting even. The two head voice long phrases towards end are just stunning. Total masterpiece in arrangement and mesmerizing performance. The epitomy of singing, convey the song to the audience, what more can we wish for, if she can do it through a video?

We all wonder if So Hyang is human or from another planet. Current odds are that she’s from another planet, with an outside chance she’s actually an angel come down from Heaven. 😇 We have never heard anyone sing like her, or be able to hold an audience in the palm of her hand until she lets them go. Her voice is, as one person described it, like liquid gold. Perfection in clarity and pitch, and she doesn’t fade in the upper octaves, which is startling when you hear her hit those 5th and 6th octave notes with such _POWER_ it actually gives everyone goose bumps-and makes us bald guys’ hair stand on end! As she says, her voice “is from God.” She does all the musical arrangements herself (with the input of her musical assistants), teaches vocal technique at a South Korean university and speaks four languages. Korean, English, French and Vietnamese.
Let me catch my breath. OK.
She is a survivor of uterine cancer from the age of 20, just after getting married, and states very plainly that God saved her life due to the prayers of her church. But this left her without the ability to have children so she decided to dedicate her life to being a Contemporary Christian Gospel singer and has refused recording contracts from the biggest corporations in the world. She only wants to sing for charities, churches and while doing missionary work, to strengthen those suffering through difficult times. David Foster, Josh Groban, Michael Bolton and others have all eagerly worked with her when they were in South Korea or Japan.
She contracted hepatitis B from a blood transfusion during her cancer surgery and it clings to her to this day. Because of this she is prone to catching pneumonia but has sang perfectly while suffering from it in her live performance of “You Raise Me Up” before Shane Filan of Westlife on South Korean TV: ruclips.net/video/te_L9ofhUt8/видео.html She has asked those who love her singing to pray that God keep pneumonia away from her, she has suffered from it on so many occasions. Imagine how she must feel with this coronavirus floating around everywhere!
She just turned 43 on April 5, 2021, though in Korean culture she would be 44 because you are deemed to be one year old when you are born. She was about 37 when she sang this version of “Arirang Alone”, their unofficial national anthem based on a 600 year old folk song expressing their desire to reunify north and south: vimeo.com/308253527
While being sick with pneumonia eight times from 2016 through to 2020, and considering giving up singing altogether, she chastised herself and entered a televised singing contest called “King of the Masked Singers” in 2017 and won six consecutive times, which has catapulted her into international fame from the performances being posted on RUclips.
Whitney Houston’s former manager saw her on RUclips and showed her to Oprah Winfrey, who brought her to David Foster’s attention. Foster then contacted So Hyang and arranged for her to share eight concerts with him at Tokyo’s famous Blue Note Club in late-2018. (For those who don't know, David Foster was Whitney Houston's producer for her albums, wrote "I Have Nothing", her most iconic song, and is probably the most famous and influential music producer in the world. He places So Hyang right beside Whitney and the rest of the top tier divas.)

She could be an international Super Star if she wanted to be but has decided that it would ruin her spiritually, quoting Proverbs 14:12 and 16:25 which both say “There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death.”
In a South Korean television interview So Hyang conceded that she struggled with her desire for fame for a number of years, going into the basement in her home numerous times and locking the door so she could complain vehemently to God that He was holding her back from becoming famous due to her health problems and other unforeseeable events. Then she later saw a Korean TV drama where the talented daughter of a very successful businessman was positive she would take over when her father retired. But he left the management of the company to a woman she hated, so she had a fit and lay kicking and screaming on the floor. So Hyang says she saw herself in that young woman and then understood that God was keeping her from developing self-destructive character by withholding international celebrity status from her. So as a consequence she no longer pursues fame or fortune and actually has no social media presence whatsoever.
What can one say about such a person? She is a literal Wonder Woman! And we need about a billion more just like her! And whether she wants it or not, fame has overtaken her, backed up and run her over again!

“Debuting in [the] US was my utmost goal for the past 20 years. But when I got a call from the US agency, I politely rejected, as I realized that what I wanted most was not becoming famous,” she said.
“I think singers are very susceptible to arrogance, especially when they hear the screaming from crowds on stage. It can make you feel like as if you’ve become God.”
“And I’m perfectly okay with sharing my music via RUclips, which can reach tens of millions of people all over the world without making me feel stuck up. Maybe that’s why I was born in this era.”
So Hyang is just the most amazing singer, Christian and human being. She is beautiful both inside and out, and so humble, open and genuine, with a stage charisma, facial expressions and smile that is off the charts.
In Korean dictionaries 소 향 (So Hyang) has several meanings.
• First is a type of Korean traditional music.
• Second is to burn incense on a burner.
• Third is to go toward.
But these meanings are rarely used today and hers is a quite uncommon name. 소 향 is also the name of a heroine in a Korean traditional novel. So in retrospect her name was well chosen, and you can take your pick!

She actually taught herself to speak English from watching Disney's "The Little Mermaid" about "one hundred times" when she was a kid, has a perfect North American accent and a bubbly personality.

Well, one more gush. In an interview with a Turkish music producer So Hyang's assistants revealed (a bit to her chagrin, as she is a self-effacing person) that she can hit Eb7 and D7 in practise. However, she never goes above the 6th octave in performances. Since she starts at D3 that is more than a 4 octave range ... so how about them apples???! Oh, I just remembered, she has also had several fantasy novels published, as well as a theological treatise on the book of Revelation, and is a very good stage actress, which she proved by playing Julie Andrews’ part in the South Korean production of “The Sound of Music.” Moreover, she sang the “Moana” part in the Korean version of the Disney film, does the musical vocals for many South Korean television dramas, and is a talented artist and cartoonist.
She can also play the piano and guitar. Is there anything this genius level woman can’t do?
Though she is less than 5' 4" and probably not even 100 pounds, So Hyang simply transcends the thresholds of music and takes you there with her. She becomes the song when she sings it and then re-emerges when she is done. An experience like no other. I don’t know what else to say. I’ve spent _entire days_ listening to her, and shed more than a few tears of joy along the way. She is indeed akin to an addictive substance you can't live without.
I really must also compliment the choir, orchestra and audio/video production people So Hyang works with. They are all top notch from what I can see and hear and it is important to note that, as these are _essential_ parts of any great music production. The Korean people are easily as talented as anyone else.

I don't know of a superior belter to Sohyang.
Besides many Disney songs she played Maria in "The Sound of Music". She uses her "Disney voice" where appropriate but darker timbres in "Everyone" and some gospel songs. Her jazz techniques are flawless as in "Misty".

If you love SoHuang, then you might want to take a look at Hua Chenyu (also know as Hua Hua). There are great singers, and then there are great artists. Hua Hua is the definition of a great artist. His skill sets include: flawlessly mixing genres within songs, exceptional stage presence, delivery of emotion, brilliantly recomposing songs, and composing his own masterpieces. In some of his songs for a competition, he has to rewrite covers within 24 hours, and he developed new masterpieces.

When looking at his videos, two things to keep in mind: 1) many of the shows have interviews. To answer your question about Disney, yes, she was the voice of Moana in the Korean version. She's a gospel queen, like you said, but she sings many genres.
Another famous song is her version of "You raise me up" most famous by the band Westlife.
But you should do a reaction to Super Vocal with the song Qui con me. These 4 guy were in the Chinese Super Vocal competition which is a competition for classical trained singers. They have perfect voices and a beautiful harmony.
Another very interesting song from that competition is the Barbra Steisand song Memory by Zsou Shen, this guy is a counter tenor and sings the song better than Barbra ;-)

There are only a few vocal analysts that I enjoy following for their ability to explain every critical detail of a person's talent and technique. When I hear a song that I like for the first time I often cannot explain why I react that way - I just know that it affects me in a positive way. Also versatile with Jazz, Rap, Rock….does all her own arrangements and her personal story of overcoming cancer and not wanting to sing for money and fame is so beyond comprehension that is why she’s my favorite by far! You nailed the pronunciation of her name. This song is just a small taste of what she can do. She does all of the arranging of her songs and her backing vocalists are picked by her and she goes through, during practices and tell the orchestra member how she wants them to come in. She is the master of her shows. She started singing at 19 or 20 years old. She took some vocal lessons from Seth Riggs in the US, who was Michael Jackson’s vocal coach. Just to give to a bit of how she got where she is. She does not wish for fame or money. That’s why she is probably not on any chart anywhere. She sings for Gods glory, and likes to help those feeling down, to feel better. She uses her singing to help others.

Bravo, Anna! Your reactions are so informative! I have seen millions of different reactions to So Hyang's songs, and from each I have drawn some detail for myself. But, as it turned out, it was enough to wait for you to watch this performance, because you paid attention to all the key points!
So Hyang is an absolute master of belting, control, support, she sings in completely different genres, although at the same time she is the recognized queen of gospel music. She is a professor herself and teaches vocals at the university.
Unfortunately, her throat and lungs are sore spots, she often suffers from pneumonia, but even this does not prevent her from singing.
Before performing on the show ''Immortal songs 2'' in 2018, the doctor forbade her even to speak, but she went on stage and ''killed'' everyone on the spot. I suggest you watch this performance of her and the masterpiece cover of the song ''You Raise Me Up'' from ''Immortal songs'' 2018.

Her technique had changed quite a bit from then and she had reigned in some of the belting to focus more on emoting and technical aspects. I prefer her style now. Check out Misty or You Are the Reason.

Sohyang is a fantastic singer, some singers whose opinions I respect consider her the gold standard. I’m not always the biggest fan of some of her arrangement choices when covering R&B or Soul songs but she always sings well. Her life story is very inspiring as well with some similarities to Mahalia Jackson in her career choices. My favorite version of this song will probably always be Aretha’s since it’s linked to so many childhood memories. Here Sohyang does a great job of fusing elements from the original and from subsequent gospel covers to create her own unique version. Some of her vocal choices make me think she was intimately familiar with this version as well ruclips.net/video/KGL099t8i2s/видео.html I’m glad you found her, she’s a real gift for singers to hear and study. BTW, maybe you know this already but the first black gospel cover of this song was by Merry Clayton and it’s worth checking out.
I can see why she is seen as such! 😊 It's always a delight to know the singer does her own arrangements. I really appreciate when the vocalist has his/her own artistic vision and the drive to make it happen.

- If you will, please do a reaction on Spanish singer Diana Navarro! I've only discovered her recently, and am a fanboy of hers now. She seems to be not very commonly known outside of Spain where she's considered an icon, they call her "la mujer do tres pulmones" (the woman with three lungs) - and for a reason! The reason why she's not that famous internationally as she deserves to be is that a) she only sings in Spanish, and b) she's got a strong flamenco background, which is somewhat out of the usual "western" listening habits, it's out of most peoples comfort zone I suppose - yet for me this is one of the most exciting voices I've ever heard in my 54 years and her breath control is really out of this world! I'd love to hear your professional fangirl reaction on her! The song I chose for a first encounter is called "Sola" (alone/lonely), this is a live performance with audience and band from a concert she did in the city of Salamanca in 2005. While her vocals carry that flamenco flavour, the music has a tango touch to it (I love tango...), so this is like the perfect mix for me and I'm listening to this (and others of her songs) over and over currently! Sohyang learned English by watching Disney movies, she also does the singing parts for the Movie Moana, Korean version. She teaches music at university, she builds Christian churches and she has written a couple of novels. Currently working on a screenplay. Record companies keep trying to sign her....she is not interested. Speaks a few languages. Cancer survivor resulting in chronic health issues. Seems to be nuclear powered.

Hei Anna! I lived in Finland for two years while doing my MA in Education at the University of Jyvaskyla. I came to admire Finland and the Finnish people, especially their ideas about education and implementation of social justice principles.
So it was a great surprise to see your reaction to one of my favourite singers! Sohyang comes from a family of musicians and married into another family of musicians - her husband is her drummer and helps with song selection and arrangements, but Sohyang is heavily involved in the arrangement process.
In interviews, Sohyang says that she carefully selects songs that can be interpreted in a way that it can be understood as singing of the heavenly Father. She says that if she sings it in a particular way, the audience could get that feeling that the song is describing Him. She also says that she prefers not to belt so much, but that she chooses to do this in competitions, because competitive singing often creates expectation for belting (vocal gymnastics).
Sohyang has very little "formal training", but of course if you are part of two musical families, we can consider it a different sort of training. She did mention that she took a few lessons from Seth Riggs.
Sohyang was a big fan of Mariah Carey, and she estimates that she listened to Music Box over a thousand times. She even sings Mariah songs when warming up, because it helps her prepare for runs and transitions from chest, head, and mixed voice.
I think one of the best Korean sopranos is Jang Hye-Ji (장혜지), who sings Christian hymns, classical, and classical crossover.

There is a jazz vocalist named Nah Youn-Sun who has been given a knighthood in France for contribution to art. She is quite amazing as well.
I also like an American soprano named Dawn Upshaw. She is one of the most versatile singers I've seen, because she can sing classical, Broadway, musical scores and jazz equally well. It would be great to see a reaction of an Upshaw performance.

I enjoyed your reaction. Those little self-critiques in the subtitles had me laughing as always; "stop fangirling, do you job" 🤣 As with so many covers, it's really hard to 'unhear' the original. Especially when the original is so good. I like, however, that she gave it a bit of a different twist. She undeniably has a beautiful, clear voice and I agree that she could easily sing Disney tunes. It's not typically my go-to music (as you know), but I liked listening to this.

She might effortless win the competition with almost all other singers but personally, purely a matter of taste, I don't like that type of voice but prefer warmer, thicker sounds. (with less twang??) Others seem to love that exactly.
