- Hi, I'm Nathan Cole and here I demonstrate the Schumann Scherzo: the scherzo from his Symphony No. 2. This is one of the most common violin audition excerpts, so get familiar with it! Go to www.natesviolin... and join my free Member Library so that you can download my own part for the Scherzo, with my fingerings and bowings for the first page and the coda.
I find it hard to believe Schumann wrote this piece of music for the orchestra! Played on a solo violin like this, it sounds like it was intended for the lonely, shrill voice of the violin.
well Schumann was also insane.
That's amazing work! incredible bow's control and fantástic sound. Congrats
This was the first Nathan's video I had watch. So happy to be now on the Violympics Trials.
I play in the Los Angeles Philharmonic. I also teach these excerpts online through ArtistWorks at the Nathan Cole School of Classical Violin.
It is more useful not to change positions all the time. Stay where possible in one position. You are moving to much up and down....
@@hectorberlioz1449 😂😂😂 these are, actually, very smart fingerings. The possibilities are pretty limited here.
@@hectorberlioz1449 show us. Can you play better? .....
@@domenicopedone5976 Yes I can , but who the hell are you that I have to make an audition for you?! With this kind of stupid reaction one can never give any critisism at all !!!
@@hectorberlioz1449Lol, you can play better in your dreams!
Bravo Nathan! Awesome finger control, so forceful and powerful pitch perfect! I could go on. You are the best mentor! Thank you!
Amazing playing!!! Gorgeous sound and cleanliness! Beautiful music making!
18 people gave up on the violin!
i dont blame them xD This piece is insane! :D
How clean and clear your sound is... it's amazing
This is fantastic! I went on your website and it was very useful. I hope you'll keep posting, this is a great idea you have. I regularly look up example of orchestra excerpts on youtube, and yours come with a very clear and accurate explanation. Thanks a lot!
Gosh, just absolutely beautiful playing
Bot
Wow!!! 🔥
My "favorite" excerpt🙄
Your fingers are incredibly relaxed!
It's great Nathan. Nice and clean and a great piece to know as well.
I love your videos. I'm taking up the violin again after being away from it since 1980. It's been an interesting experience. The Tascam DR-05 music recorder works a lot better than the Sony recorders we all had in the 70's. I remember being embarassed at an orchestral audition by having to sight-read the 1st mvt. of the Schubert Symphony #2.
How do you do it so perfectly??! WOW
That's awesome, Nathan! 17 dislikes? Jealous people suck!
They're not jealous. They just hate anyone who isn't Maxim Vengerov.
can't imagine why anyone will "dislike"???
they probably actually are jealous. it's hard to win a job, let alone get a leadership/title chair in one of the world's great orchestras...
Phenomenal execution!
Ah sim vi seus outros videos !!! São muito bom eles, obrigado por compartilhar!!!!
The bow wrist!!!!! I'm having a lot of troubles bringing this up to speed 😱
Great_clean and crisp.
Please, upload all the first page (with you playing) of "Don Juan" (Strauss). And the Scheherezade solos, thats will be great to see and hear!
+Joa0508 Actually I do have a video up for Don Juan, and it is here:
ruclips.net/video/-PimDtlFQPs/видео.html
+Joa0508 As for the Scheherazade solos, you can see them at my online school with ArtistWorks. There I go through each one of them and there is video and practice tips:

Thanks for your answer :)
Nice! Good for stimming 👍
Nathan, what bow are you using here?
Bravo muito bom !!!! tem mais videos?!!
@tboynew, have you visited my online violin school? I can show you more details on this and anything else via Video Exchanges. Best, Nathan
thank you, hope I can see the Mozart Sym. no.39 finale expert
Hey great, I've just started checking out your videos. I've been trying to work up an audition after my first was a disaster and I'll be eager to check out your info on fingerings for this excerpt.
Any plans to do the Don Juan?
Dear Mr Cole,
I went to your website, but can’t find your free member library......
So helpful! Thanks!
Great ..! thanks for the upload
I have to play this tomorrow and I still can’t get it to speed 😭
Where can I download this excerpt with Nat’s fingerings?
I really admire the bow control in the intonation, it's really impeccable. I get the feeling that it is speeding up quite a bit though...
I had to put a metronome to it, because I'm not sure that I ever did! I was hoping to prove you wrong... and in a way we're both wrong, because overall I slow down in this performance. :) The beginning is faster than I thought, and tends to settle later on. You can try it for yourself!
is the scan of your schumann part still on your website, and if so, where?
+Eliza W Yes it is. At the moment, you need to "register" for the New York Philharmonic audition Challenge (even though the Challenge is over by now). This will allow you to download the Schumann part.
Hi Nathan Cole ...I trust to “register like you said to get access to your Schumann Scherzo, but it says I have to purchase the course for $299...
Please is it possible to still get a copy free copy of the scherzo? Thank you!
plz,sir upload a vedio about Indian classical jhala technique
I'm amazed at this performance of course, but I do have a question if I can possibly ask, as I'm playing this to a metronome and working the tempo up to 144 bpm.
You have some amazingly consistent rhythm, but what I'm not understanding are some places where there are some small pauses - you might call them phrasing in a solo situation, but I can't say I hear them in an orchestral performance.
One example is at 0:26 and 0:55. There are some smaller pauses here and there in the piece. Of course I mean just ask the intention of this (and I apparently it's permissible in an audition). Just for my sake in understanding what is valued at an audition, I'm wondering if you have a comment on such things. Thanks!
Right! Ideally, the excerpts should be played as they would be in an orchestral setting. Hearing these pauses today, after you pointed them out, I notice them and I wish they were a bit shorter... I believe that at the time I made the video, I was hoping to make a point that you shouldn't feel rushed in this excerpt. I also feel that if I were listening "as a committee member" to this performance, I wouldn't be bothered since the phrase endings happen in logical places. Doing it over again, I would still phrase there but make them a bit less noticeable.
So the short answer is that those pauses would be taken in context with the overall level of playing, and also whether they made any musical sense in the moment. And maybe I'll make a Scherzo 2.0 version video!
Thanks a lot for your reply as it helps me understand. Essentially the audition committee member gets the point as far as the player's capabilities (the phrasing is intentional, not a reflection of lack of ability) even if it's not completely reflective of an orchestral performance.
This isn't the only audition excerpt performance I've heard with a few similar interpretations of tempo (I've heard similar things in performances in the Don Juan excerpt, for one).
Thanks for your videos!
oh my god I want to play this
BRAVO. GRAN PASAJE.
What strings do you use?
congratultions
Hi Mr. Cole I actually have another question about this excerpt if you don't mind, as I've been practicing it for quite some time for an audition and the question may be useful.
I just showed a video from my channel in which I played the excerpt and a symphony member told me to slow it down ten clicks. I was playing at a perfect 144, as I actually wore headphones to hear a metronome while I was playing. Now of course I'm well-advised to listen to someone who has been playing professionally in a symphony for many, many years, and if slower is the way to go for an audition committee, then that's certainly good to know.
Nevertheless, I wonder what you think, because in this video you're basically up to about 144 (and sounding fantastic, of course). Honestly, if I were to pick an excerpt I'd rather not play at marked tempo, it would be the Don Juan! I'd love to get away with playing that a little more on the slower side! ;)
Hi Josh, thanks for the question and to be honest I wasn't aware that I was playing this at 144 since I usually tell people to play it slower! In fact, that was the advice I was given by a Philadelphia Orchestra member before taking my first audition. And for most people it's good advice, because it's easier to play cleanly when you take a bit off the tempo. And cleanliness does matter.
In a really resonant hall, I would say that 144 is simply too fast, even if you're clean. As far as getting it clean, I took a look at your video, and I would recommend taking it down a bit to really get the string crossings exact (so that you're always on just one string). It will also give you a chance to hear pitch even more easily. The overall impression is a bit frantic because it's not totally under control. But once it's under control, you'll find the tempo that gives a brilliant impression without "leaning forward".
For what it's worth, I usually have to tell people to play Schumann slower and Don Juan faster!
Thanks a lot for the input! Do you have a particular bpm tempo that you'd recommend shooting for?
Usually around 132 sounds fast but under control. It depends on the space where you are playing though!
Well I think that settles it for me, then - I'll be aiming for about that tempo for audition preparation. Good to know. Thanks a lot!
Love it
That's crazy
Shoulder rest here. Still looking for the best approach? I liked your sound more without shoulder rest, but who cares in the group. With the rest less stress on you your back and hands. You are a very talented violinist.
I don't see why there are more "dislikes" than "likes". I happen to really like this clip.
Coda pls!
That's a nice leisurely "scherzo"..... 😉
You sound good. You should be a professional violinist. Keep practicing! You'll get there some day! 😝
+handelviola He is a professional violinist. In fact is he associate concertmaster of the LA philharmonic.
I don't think he needs anymore practice.....
pretty sure handelviola was joking
practice never ends.
Bafomet Abaddon it was clearly a joke, calm down ffs
