I Love This! When I learned the Bible was a narrative and I started reading it like a story - the big themes came to life and I could see them everywhere. It has really helped me to hone my studies and look at more than just one “proof verse” but rather look at what the Bible says from all of scripture.

Gentlemen, you are both brothers I’ve come to have great regard for in your teaching, writing and your obvious love for the people of God. Could you spend more time addressing the parts of the Bible that do hurt, as with Tim’s friend Matt? My husband has held the Bible in mistrust after failing to understand how God himself could command the killing of children and babies…in Numbers 31 the Lord says to “avenge the people of Israel against the Midianites”, but then an angry Moses commands the killing of wives and mothers, only sparing the young virgins to be given to the Israelites. I have studied the cultural and literary contexts, am familiar with Heiser’s work and Walton somewhat less, and I understand that there is hyperbole in the genre of these narratives. But my husband, a kind and generous, gentle man, finds it hard to entrust himself to the early narratives as over against the teachings of Christ. They are two different characters to him. Therefore in his mind, how can he trust the Bible, how can he trust God? Is Brad Jersak right, and we should discount the writings that contradict the character of Jesus? Since Jesus is the Word, and supersedes all that came before? I am putting all this so roughly and imperfectly. But we have been struggling with this faith issue for almost 15 years now. Married as firm committed Christians, I watched my husband slowly lose his grip on Christianity. Even through I know he is still wrestling, and I believe God has not lost His grip on him. I would certainly be coming up to you after the service on this one! Please, are you going to address this terrible issue? No one seems to have a satisfactory answer…after all, it’s right there in the text. What did God really intend? Why did he not correct Moses if Moses in his anger went too far? Why don’t these episodes bother me the way they bother my husband? What can be done to help people like Matt and my husband? Thank you both for your constant attention to the way people understand their greatest treasure, the scriptures of God. Edited for typos

I love this so much - the concepts are beautifully conveyed with clarity and kindness, however, I don't believe I have ever heard the plight of the illiterate, or less literate individuals addressed and where they fit into this paradigm -- How does the transformative process work for them?
Agreed. But with Help Like This God is helping us all rediscover the Bible on It’s own terms 🔔 The Future of Biblical scholarship looks very bright thanks to Tim Mackie and the Bible Project.
@@ringthembells143I adore Tim and the Bible project I have learned so much. We have to be careful not to make him and his series an idol. We also have to remember where to place the glory. I was doing that before. So I caution everyone who has a favorite pastor to not idolize the man or his work, instead give glory to the true author & teacher.
As a believer for over 25 years, the teachers I've learned the most from are Dr. Michael Brown, Dr. Michael Heiser, and Dr. Tim Mackie.

Excellent picture of the desire to use the Bible for good but not fully understanding how to use it, then it can be misused. A simple hammer 😉
