A single robot leg, bulging manic eyeball, and hairy torso, I didn't realize my Uncle Seb was moonlighting as an 8-bit boss in the '80s! Explains a lot, actually.
Great video! It's ironic how the 8-bit era was so limited in its graphics but somehow able to create even more imaginative and visceral bosses than most modern near-photorealistic games do. Thanks for the trip down memory lane! ("Skuh-1337-whole" sounds odd, to me at least. :P)
I've watched pretty much all of their videos on this channel since discovering them during the 2020 first lockdown. The Shit Games for Wankers/Worst Games Ever playlist mix from here, Vidiots and WhatCulture is a regular Playlist I run if having problems sleeping. They uploaded 3 Seasons of them in one singular 4-5hour chunk that I've fallen asleep to multiple times.
Definitely good call including Dracula’s 2nd Form from Castlevania 3! A huge floating brain with lots of faces dripping blood from their maws which then become skulls when you kill each one? Yeah that’s pretty warped! Imagine if they realized it in animation form for the Netflix series.
Of course, the plot of Blaster Master was completely rewritten for the English version. The original Japanese version featured no pet frog nonsense, and was about an invasion of the peaceful _planet_ Sofia III in the Epsilon galaxy by the Invem Dark Star Cluster, with the tank Metal Attacker being created by a small group of survivors from the attack to fight back. I'm willing to bet most of the games on this list had their plots changed for the western release, but Blaster Master is probably the one where they put the most effort into integrating the new plot into the game, what with the all new cutscenes- and they still only managed to come up with cliched crap like "boy wants his pet frog back"...
There was also a short novel written about this new plot. While it is laughably unbelievable (c'mon, a HUGE expanse underneath the surface of earth with space-age tech? okaaay), it is a decent standalone story that gives further context of the game and it is decently written despite it being a somewhat amateur written book for kids. The same author also did one for Metal Gear which was even better written.
It's very rare when a game that tries to mash two genres together in the same game, actually pull it off. Usually when you try to mash two genres in the same game, you get this game that tries to be too many different things, and never excels at any of them and just feels blah and samey. TGL, on the other hand, manages to pull it off, somehow. It's an awesome top-down shooter, but yet the on-foot exploration is awesome too. I think what really helped, is that you use the same weapons in both segments and the controls feel really smooth and responsive, and your character (either on foot OR in the flying form) doesn't move like she's 9 months pregnant (ahem, Life Force before picking up the mandatory Speed powerups). That's something Crystalis also did (fast character movement) and it's one of the things that makes _that_ game feel so awesome to play too.
I love all the bosses in that game, honestly. Even just the first boss, the Piranha Shark Fish, with its dozens of teeth and singular eye. Certainly not what I was expecting as a kid!
7:01 "Life Force" was also released as "Salamander" on the C64, and though it was missing 2 of the 6 original levels ( IIRC, GIGA is completely absent), the mutant bosses on levels 1 and 2 would **definitely** get a place on this list.
That's the game!! Astyanax! I was literally just thinking about it yesterday, it's a game I used to have for NES I could never find when trying to describe it. Literally for like 15+ years I've been trying to figure out what that game was
Man the NES has a whole lot of awesome body horror monsters in their kid friendly games. They just look awesome. Blaster Master is on the Switch and I definitely gonna play it.
11:52 We're not gonna talk about that? Also, if you ever do a third installment of disturbing 16 Bit video game bosses, I recommend the deformed rat from Harley's Humongous Adventure.
And one more thing, how about a worst to best on the Mega Man series? It's one you haven't got to. There are plenty of titles to make an hours worth of content. Cheers bruddas!
How about the theme as you're flying towards NAGU? (I think it was called NAGU.. or was that NABU?) Very iconic and very well written piece of 8bit chiptune. That, and Area 0 walking theme.
How about Soft & Cuddly on the Speccy? cant remember if there are proper boss's in it, never did manage to get too far, but pretty much the whole game is full of wierd & disturbing imagry, maybe for a list of games full of disturbing stuff

An example of this, off the top of my head, would be Xenoblade, which is pronounced Zenobureido in japanese. You'll find loads more like this if you start actively looking for them 😅
I just feel sorry for it because of how Mother Nature, in her infinite wisdom, saw fit to clog its butthole up with an eyeball. How does it poop? Is there a second mini-brain in its hind that allows it to interpret what its buttball sees? Is it even able to smuggle contraband across state borders? It reminds me of that one painting. I have no anus and I must poop. Only the little bloated and struggling fellow is clutching his ginormous buttball. Or maybe it's just a reference to the Japanese "Shirime" youkai. I dunno. My comments still apply if that's the case.
The pronunciation of "Gradius" entirely depends on where you're from. Outside of the UK, it's pronounced "GRAY-dee-us", while in the UK, it's pronounced "GRAH-dee-us". Both are right.
Nice video. Ought to be titled "10 More Disturbing 8-bit NES Video Game Bosses." The 8-bit area of gaming far extends from Arcade to home computers, handhelds and 8-bit Consoles like Sega Master System and Turbo Grafx 16 (yep Turbo is an 8 bit console). Nintendo may have won the pop culture of 8 bit, but Nintendo definately doesn't own what 8-bit is. Some 8-bit games make the NES 8-bit, look like 8-Bit-shit.
Sinistar was terrifying, but not very disturbing. It was just some kind of evil space robot. Most of the stuff on the list here is a writing mass of oh-dear-god-why-please-make-it-stop.
I used to play this game on SNES I think there was this game I can't remember the name of it was like Street of Rage there was a giant 12 feet tall feminist boss with fire breathing Damm it can't remember the name.
I love you guys so much. Maybe because I am so use to our lord and savior Adam... every time you say the title of your video and don't say "Join Us"... I always say it in my head... maybe I am alone in this but I think you should too???
That extra rear-facing eye gives Biclops excellent hindsight.

An old game on the zx spectrum - go to hell. Pretty much everything is 8 bit gross in it.

There was so much they could’ve done with Dracula in that one, I still enjoyed the series though!
I'm very happy to see The Guardian Legend get more recognition
Of course, the plot of Blaster Master was completely rewritten for the English version. I like how the remake "Blaster Master Zero" kinda mixes both the USA and Japanese plots together, with some new plot points.
Invem...
Why does that name sound familiar?
Glad they changed that, Metal Attacker for the tank name is dumb. Can you explain how the pet frog is cliche?
@@richardcochrun3869 >Metal Attacker is a dumb name

The Japanese box art for Guardian Legend is one of the sweetest NES/Famicom boxes period.
The Japanese sure had a thing for robotic/cybernetic action girls, that's for sure!
Glad to see the team doing well. And Peter, I think you're tall enough to be a awesome Storm Trooper!
Dracula also had an awful demonic wail when you killed one of his heads.

Where can I listen to the background music used in these videos?
Magic John is a funny name lol
Why did developers love/fear mutations so dang much?
For me Grimgrin (Area 8 Bosses) is the more ugly than final boss from Guardian Legend, and I think this monster is the inspiration from US Cover Art
Same. Grimgrin's final phase is pretty much tailor-made for lists like this.
A lot of brains it seems
