Funny thing, Half-Life was inspired by The Mist. The original name for it was even gonna be Quiver, as a reference to the Arrowhead Project in the book.
I believe that the Behemoth is actually used as a hive for most of the creatures seen in the film, the other creatures just use it’s body as a home for themselves, seeing that the Gray-Widowers lay eggs in living / formerly living organisms. As for the worms, they likely cling on to the ribs of the Behemoth until they are at their desired location in where prey are present.
My theory: The Behemoth is a non-living being. It is akin to the "walkers" in Star Wars, with "people" (from the other dimension) inside. The layout of their dimension is similar to ours, so it takes them a while before they realize they aren't in Kansas anymore. I say that what they opened, was a ZOO, and, The Behemoth is The Zookeeper, complete with food and shelter for the animals.

They genuinely threw out the idea of monsters, I'm guessing because of the CGI costs, and replaced it with some shitty half assed psuedo-philosophical explanation about how nature doesn't like humans because we're not nice.
mokka The only thing I saw close enough to one of these monsters was the guy who sprouted wings from his back. And they showed a spider that looked like the grey widow, but wasn’t (fan service). I want my life back.
In the book the Behemoth's body is not described, only its legs are visible and the body is so high up that it disappears into the mist making it even more baffling just how huge this monster is.
look, if i was a creature from the mist would i try to kill a guy who can litterly shape shift into everything and steal my soul by opening its mouth and making me float and uncousiin and habing a chance to be eaten is prob the reason i wont go and try to make him into my diner if he makes me into his dinner by opening his mouth.
My theory for the behemoth is that a large portion of it's body is actually a micro ecology. Where various creatures nest. And maybe the tentacles are a codependent species
The Mist is such a great film! Kinda cool to that is has so many of the Walking Dead alumni in it as well....I also love that it has a realistic ending...none of the main characters are left alive, and the protagonist of the film (Thomas Jane) is left devastated and broken after what he was just forced to do....for nothing. Knowing if he had held out just a few more moments is heartbreaking.
I always remember the behemoth. I remember it larger than 240 ft, and it looks bigger. I imagine that, up on it's back, you'd find a whole biome, with something like trees and tons of other creatures that don't know any world other than the gently drifting back of this gargantuan monster. I love the point at which it shows up, as well. Everyone in the car can only be left with one impression: this is no longer your world.
I always loved the mist always thought they could make a second movie shooting from the perception of the soldiers how they open the rift and how did they close it
Ehhh, Lovecraft's monsters are meant to inspire fear by giving the reader a sense of hopelessness and a feeling that they are insignificant to the larger forces at play. These creatures are just gruesome.
It's interesting, when script writers and movie producers use Lovecraft's general ideas from his mythos they can produce amazing classic films like The Thing, Alien, and The Mist, but when someone tries to make a direct translation of a Lovecraft story it always turns out to be a dud. Off hand I can't think of any horror/sci-fi writer whos stories are so difficult to transfer onto the big screen.
@T. Gorbach, the unfortunate difficulty of transferring a hopeless cause onto a screen and pure insanity is the sheer fact of trying to figure out some sort of medium that the audience can understand while not driving them insane. Since the main factor in a lot of Cthulhu mythos is the sheer insignificance of the protagonist and their plight as well as the sheer magnitude of what they'd have to accomplish, it's really hard to present an enthralling story onto the big screen. Where as in stories we can create the scenes and imagine the worst that is to come, in big screen there is no imagination, it's presented from the Director's Lense. And thus the Director has to have a REALLY good adaptation to manifest a compelling story that would not only entertain but translate the mythos properly. In the end, it IS theoritcally possible to do, or at least get close to... but at the same time the chances of something pulling a task so flawlessly and successfully are about the same as Valve making Half-life 3 and it meeting fan expectations instead of being a forever dissapointment
while I'm absolutely pro free speech, the way people in panic let themselves to get influenced by people like her is a real and dangerous phenomena. It could becomes a hell of a philosophical debate but I think the shot in the head was the best choice.
I _was_ excited for the series, but by god it's so damn bad. The Mist is one of my favorite horror/sci-fi movies, but the show is so poorly written and acted that I couldn't make it past the 5th episode.
Damien John yea I'm kinda annoyed with it to, I'm a huge fan of the mist and the dark tower series and I just wish people would try to stick closer to the source material instead of "adding their own twist to it"
Good video breakdown sir, thank you. The spiders are the most scary to me. Their ability to multiply as fast as they do would make them a world threat. The lobster creature reminds me of a larger version of the one found in the "Dark Tower" books.
Interesting facts - connections of SK's other books: 1. In It: the web of It's spider form caused similar effets on humans, like seen in the Mist. 2. In the Dark Tower series: there's a place, named Todash, where a lot of monsters lived, almost everyone of them are insect-like. Probably, with the Arrowhead Project, the miliraty managed to open a portal to the Todash, and all the creatures of "The Mist" came from there...
I read somewhere that they were in fact todash creatures and it was a thinnie that actually opened the way for them to get into the Mist universe. But also it was a preview of what would have happened if the crimson king got full 100% control of the Dark Tower and its twinner, The Rose. 😅
Lovecraftian doesnt mean tentacles tho. It means "fear of the unknown, fear of madness, fear of the unthinkable" Ctuhlu Was so frightening because the shear look of him would make you insane. Sure monsters are cool, but things you fear without even kmowing how they look or what they are is waaaay scarier. Like laying in your bed at night, kmowing 100% theres nothing to be afraid of, yet you still fear the dark.

If you read The Dark Tower series by Stephen King (specifically book three, 'The Waste Lands'), you'd not only get better descriptions of some of these creatures, you'd also find out where they came from and get an idea of the mist from craters they were crawling into...
The end was pretty much black comedy, I actually lol'd. I liked the movie, but the end is seriously ridiculous: They just couldn't wait to suicide, even though they were apparently safe inside the car for a while... They attempted to escape with the car not only because of the lunatic christians, but also because they hoped for rescue somewhere out there. Out of gas? OMG hurry up with the bullets! Couldn't have been more lolzy if they pulled straws for who goes first ("Yessss! I WIN! Can't wait to get it first!")
I always laughed at the ending, I found it sad but I laughed for no reason. It might be because it would have been only a few minutes until he would have been saved. I just preferred the book ending of uncertainty really.
Admittedly I've never read the book, from what you say I assume they're just stuck in the mist and waiting to "see what happens" (similar to the ending in Carpenter's 'Thing')? That'd be much better of an ending than what we got in the movie - heck, any other ending would.
You know what’s really interesting about the tentacles from Planet X? The way they were animated and put into the movie. The director couldn’t get an animatronic to look as fluid as he wanted. So he got on a green sleeve and glove and did it himself! It gave it a more real look. There’s more evidence of directors or other film crew members using practical effects to give the movie a better look. Like using condoms full of blood and rupturing them above and elevator shaft to give a better look to a leg getting ripped off.
It's bobby pin time Pedestrians Movie was too damn good and with realistic panic. I prefer the movie ending than you're typical cliche bullshit of making the reader/audience make up their own ending which was on the book.

TV show was fucking awful, I sat through the whole first season waiting for monsters or a breakthrough in plot development but nothing happened. They genuinely threw out the idea of monsters, I'm guessing because of the CGI costs, and replaced it with some shitty half assed psuedo-philosophical explanation about how nature doesn't like humans because we're not nice.
Well its only the first season, right? I havnt watched it yet but i have high hopes.
Already been cancelled :(
mokka The only thing I saw close enough to one of these monsters was the guy who sprouted wings from his back. And they showed a spider that looked like the grey widow, but wasn’t (fan service). I want my life back.
it sucked
The only good thing about the show was the into (opening ) that made the show look mysterious and dark.
“Deadly enough to cause its victim to die”

Glad someone pointed this out
DAYM THAT'S DEADLY!
fiuuu! thought is was just deadly enough to make the victim live
It means the creatures are deadly enough to cause the death of people without touching them, as the lady in the market who kill herself
In the book the Behemoth's body is not described, only its legs are visible and the body is so high up that it disappears into the mist making it even more baffling just how huge this monster is.
My theory is that all of the mist creatures are from macroverse, the same universe where pennywise came from
Yeah that's not really a theory. It's in setting fact. Outright confirmed.
Pennywise tells in the novel that it is alone in the macroverse.
look, if i was a creature from the mist would i try to kill a guy who can litterly shape shift into everything and steal my soul by opening its mouth and making me float and uncousiin and habing a chance to be eaten is prob the reason i wont go and try to make him into my diner if he makes me into his dinner by opening his mouth.

I LOVED the designs of the monsters in this film. It was so Lovecraftian, yet it felt like something out of Trevor Henderson's sketchbook.
The widower got me all fucked up.
When i saw the movie though the behomoth is what sold me because ..lovecraft.
BIlly Ray , the story ended differently.
King also liked the adaptation of the Dark Tower. :S

In the novel, the Behemoth is even bigger. Stephen King wrotes that a blue whale would look like a trout to this meanie.
I watched this so long ago but I still remembered some of the scenes which means it must've really terrified me when I was little
Lemme bet, those good ol' spiders eh ?

The Behemoth's legs are taller than 18' on the movie for sure. More like 40' from the looks of it
Closer to over one hundred-fifty feet tall if the whole thing tops out at two hundred.
I think the 18 is each section of the leg
I always loved the mist always thought they could make a second movie shooting from the perception of the soldiers how they open the rift and how did they close it

The Mist is a very underrated film. Although not a part of the Cthuthu Mythos, it's probably the best Lovecraftian film ever made.
Agreed..these are definitely Eldritch monsters.
T. Gorbach yep
Star Wars AT-AT in organic form.

Good video breakdown sir, thank you. The spiders are the most scary to me. Their ability to multiply as fast as they do would make them a world threat. The lobster creature reminds me of a larger version of the one found in the "Dark Tower" books.
Interesting facts - connections of SK's other books:
