As a girl, I think it's really unfair that boys feel like they need to bottle up their emotions to seem manlier. They should also be able to open up about their feelings without being seen as weak. There is no shame in crying or being different. I think we live in the shitty world that could be so much better if everyone could have a bit of compassion. I was in the girls restroom with my friend earlier today, and she started her period. She asked me if I had a pad, and a bunch of girls burst of laughing. “Ooh someone’s on her period” and such. Seriously? We aren’t 10. It was ridiculous. It was in a MIDDLE SCHOOL BATHROOM. I don’t know what their deal was. I can’t speak for the male struggles since I’m not a male, but I know they must be difficult.

Feels nice knowing this song points out a lot of the issues that are overlooked as a guy. We do need hugs and support, we do cry, but we NEVER say anything. If anyone is confused, this song is about being a teenage boy and feeling pressured into acting "tough" or mean. It is showing the effects of toxic masculinity and how a lot of boys who act mean or emotionless on the outside are actually an emotional wreck on the inside, and only act this way because society tells them to.
I think the bugs come into play because the song is written in the point of view of a 14 year older boy who acts tough but has a soft spot for bugs.
The title "Boys Will Be Bugs" is based on "boys will be boys." It is saying that boys are going to be annoying and rude but people just play it off because that's how they are expected to act by society.
I understand the line "How's it like in a female world, I bet it's just so much better." Yes, girls generally don't have to hide their emotions. Obviously, there are things in the female world that aren't so great as much as there are in the male world. But, in a boy's perspective they don't really pay attention to all of it.
The song also shows how various teenagers will think they know everything but they are just as confused as anyone else. The phrase "...and I think I know everything." gets repeated a lot. Cavetown is portraying a boy confused about girls, trying awkwardly to talk to a girl he likes. Another line that was said is "If ladybugs are girls, how do you make kids together?" Which is showing the boy may think he knows how everything works but he really doesn't.
After all, the bravest thing you can do is be yourself, not what others tell you to be.

I played this today for my fourteenth birthday and I got to hug my mom. When I first found this song I must’ve been 11-12 and by god I really didn’t think I would be able to play it today. Last year today I was in a mental hospital because of my attempt and one of the few reasons Im glad I made it is because I got to play this song. So if you’re not in a great place, aren’t sure you’ll make it to fourteen, and are looking for at least one reason to keep going; Make this a reason. Keep going so you can play this on your birthday.

I listened to this song a couple time before watching the lyric video. I wanna just say I love everything by Cavetown, the music is just so moving it gives me goosebumps. Now, after seeing the actual lyrics, I feel like it's so much better. @Rehana Aamir there's no gender here or there about life, everyone experiences hard shit in their lives, some more than others, suicide just depends on whoever gives up the most. i dont usually stand by the "being this gender is harder than the other one" because it depends on how hard an individual'd life are. Yeah sure boys get a boner everyday and it's embarrassing to some people, but girls experience period and even if it happens less than a boner, the amount of struggle is a girl have to go through that days of period is hard. whenever i hear this song, i always think about most of the guy friends and my own partner. i honestly think about men in general though. it hurts me when i hear this song and realize that while girlhood is wanting to be believed, boyhood is a wanting to be heard. at least that’s what it means seems to me. i wish i could give every boy who had to feel like they had to hide what they truly feel a hug and the comfort they never received. you never have to mask your feelings and how you truly feel. you can cry. it’s alright, you’re just as human as everyone else. it’s not weak. it takes strength to be vulnerable, it really does. i’m sorry for all the times you had to take it in and bottle it up because nobody would be there for you. i’m sorry that you held it in for so long. i don’t know how to explain it but a part of me mourns for everyone who still truly feels that they must hide away how they feel. you’re doing amazing and no matter what happens, there will always be someone there for you. you deserve to continue to love whatever it is you want to love and i’ll Support you no matter what. and even though i may not know you, i love you. 🤍
