Michael Jackson - Thriller - Secret Outtakes Isolated Vocals
Arguably one of the greatest pop songs and music videos of all time, Michael Jackson - Thriller.
Few people realize what painstaking efforts go into making a track like this.
In this isolated vocal version, I decided to break down the vocals line by line to give you a flavor of what I am talking about.
Michael was well known for doing something called "comp tracks".
Producer Quincy Jones would have Michael sing the song many many times over and then pick phrases, lines or even single words that he felt were the best "takes" and comp (or compile) one single track out of the multi tracks that they recorded.
We explore this in a little bit of detail in this video along with Michael's style, his phrasing, his amazing pitch tone and energy.
I hope you enjoy this track as much as I enjoyed analyzing it.

Excited for this! Pleeeeease do a vocal analysis of Michael Jackson’s “Earth Song.” Michael really showcased his vocal ability on that one!
That's a great idea too, if he doesn't get a copyright strike for it
I agree
Man in the mirror is another song where he show his awesome vocal talent.
YES!
Another is Will You Be There or even Childhood!
Michael voice is incredible. Listening to his him singing in acapella is eye opening. Too many people focus on his dancing abilities and overall showmanship instead of his singing capabilities which is a pity, because his voice is wonderful!
I looooove his voice ! That energy and smoothness when the song needs it, he is unique !
I love this series! It’s great to hear on what a high level these guys were operating back then without auto tune. Then being able to choose between all these high level takes just shows how good this guy was.
This showed the intentionality, and thoughtfulness with which Michael and Quincy approached recording. He was a great talent that put a lot of hard work behind the talent to reach an artistic vision.
Hearing their raw studio voice is pretty awesome, and not what I expected.
Michael Jackson is a genius! He’s a monster! A God of felling! How energetic, swing, funky…
What a lost we had. So young…
People think that songs just pop out and it's there?
That is extremely rare.
I have songs that took me 5 minutes to write.
I have a songs that took me days to write.
And I have a song that took 20 years to write from the initial concept of writing words to an 1880's melody that I liked; to the actual inspiration that produced the lyrics.
In every case I sang the melody for the song and rehearsed them as I wrote the words to insure the message fit the melody.
Then, after completing the lyrics, I have to rehearse the song and memorize the words the same way I do with songs I didn't write.
That's the true, natural, creative process.
Unfortunately, I can't arrange a score for my songs so anytime I do perform them, it's A Capella.
I don’t think people think that… I do think that most of us think that while they do many takes, they pick the best full take , as opposed to taking a piece from this take and add that to a piece from that take and so on and so forth……but that’s what they do. Of course I kind of knew what they do because I worked in studio before.
Wow, I love the overlays of all the takes. Amazing to hear the similarities and then again to hear the slight differences.
Excellent video. Thank you. Got chills listening to it.
Man, those lyrics are tough. He chocked on his tongue just before the "woo hoo" at the end.. man, he was crazy good tho.
I love your analysis as always, Ken. I love how you point out that even MJ had to work on his s*** and it's true. He worked his ass off and that is why he became who he became. Sure, he was an amazing all around talent but without his dedication and work ethic he would have never ever become the legendary and iconic King Of Pop. Michael was truly an artist that comes only once in 1000 years. All the best Ken!
Well said! His success didn’t come from nothing! Once in a lifetime talent.
Wow, the vocals are so damn close to each other
This is magical. This definitely helps me with my confidence issues. I lean on technique because I was ridiculed for singing when I was young, so showing a lot of emotion or feeling makes me feel a bit awkward sometimes. Now that I’m a front woman for a band, I really want to improve my stage presence.
Stuff like this definitely helps. Vibe over diction.
Worth a mention for the great late Rod temperton, who wrote the song, and other great songs.
yep
This Isolated Vocals series is still so awesome and interesting. One thing i notice by all great singers, they craft on every damn single word. With autotune you may sound good but this playing and painting with the words make this singers so awesome.
You are a real treasure Ken!! Thank you for showing us all the hard work and discipline that takes to make such a great song. This the prove that behind every great artist there is not only talent but discipline and a ton of work!! Thank you so much again!!
Woah! You can really say anything for anyone. Congratulations for not neglecting the quality and the amazing technique that Michael had ,but at the same time saying the truth as it is that he didn't sing the song as organically as it sounded on the record! I'm pretty sure not many people knew this
Wow! I loved that! MJ was more amazing than I thought. He worked so hard.
Important to note that Rod Temperton who wrote this song also arranged vocals as did Quincy. MJ had to do tons of takes to ultimately be able to do what Rod wanted
Rod wrote most of the songs on Thriller! Even wrote some of Off The Wall. Dude was unreal!
@@bobbydrake5937 Rod didn't write "most of" Thriller. MJ wrote Billie Jean, Beat it, Wanna be startiñ somethin and Thr girl is mine. Rod wrote Baby be mine, Thriller and Lady in my Life. There are 9 songs on Thriller.... And it was Billie Jean and Beat it that made Thríller what it is. And the mv of Thriller..
What you and Beato are doing here on youtube etc are my favs. There are some others I appreciate. Keep doing what you are doing. Very educational and fun to watch. This entertainment beats what Hollyweird has been up to unfortunately. Not all, but I think we all know now where this road is going down. Time to preserve all of the greatness that came from the 20th century and early 21st century.
Michael Jackson is just the greatest, we didn’t deserve him.
I love the grit in his voice when he uses it, and I love his rock and guitar based stuff like Give In To Me, Dirty Diana and Whatever Happens.
Really cool to hear, thank you, Ken. Thriller was a pretty cool album, the titular track was awesome, and the video was groundbreaking! I remember having a vhs tape of just the video, produced by the label.
Ken your a genius, I did not know it was plan. It was said that his Billie Jean was a one take song. But seeing this is crazy, taking parts from each take is crazy. This is before the he hes its has the oohs. for Michael to keep the level without loosing his voice that's impressive.
This one is really cool! Unbelievable musician.
This is GOLD! This clearly tells us that; everyone has to work out their path with hard work to make a best creative piece of work. No exceptions! But I also know, in the days when the comping at was not possible, the singers and composers still had to plan all these out, rehearsing it hundreds of times (may be less or even more) before they go for final recording take. So rehearsing and planning expressions is part of production but in different ways in different times.
As always my man the way you break these songs down, gives us the listeners a great way of understanding the vocals.
MJ Has really unique and gifted voice.
Wow, this is so cool! Michael was phenomenal!
Shout out to the writer of this song Rod Temperton! He wrote a lot of Michaels material on off the wall and thriller album. Thriller was original written with title “starlight”. Search it and listen to it it’s crazy!
I have a Michael Jackson story, from my FIRST job; I was caretaking a multi million dollar cave home (yeah you read it right) for a very rich man. We were in the middle of a project putting nickel epoxy on the ceilings to eliminate/reduce leaks when the door bell rang.
Ps. Boss lived far away and had a STRICT tours by appointment only.
Two men were at the door and they introduced themselves saying they were scouting a location to shoot … a MJ video. It might have been Scorsese … I remember it WAS someone even I’d heard of. Anyway. So I has to say sorry not without appointment. I didn’t get the feeling that they were used to not getting what they wanted.
All praise for the excellent analysis💫💫
Thank you so much.
Rock on🤘🎶🎤
Great content Ken! Great breakdown! You’re truly a professional, this breakdown proves that.
Just finished the video. This was really awesome, Ken. Thank you.
Very cool. Was saying on previous Micheal video it would be better to judge his vocals on raw studio tracks and you more than delivered.
Michael Jackson had a great work ethic. He wanted be always be perfect so he worked his butt off. That's why he became the King of Pop. I also like the low key demos of him. You can hear the first ideas of the sound, the changing lyrics and the way he sings. he had everything in his head, you said Quincy Jones made him, but without the talent that Michael Jackson already had, even Qunincy Jones couldn't create something like what they created together. (Sorry I am not sure about my grammer here, but it is late and I can not concentrate :-) )
I agree, People like Quincy worked with many artists and none of them did anything like MJ did, so it’s Michael’s talent combined with Quincy that rocked it. He created better stuff later on though without him though I think, like the Dangerous album. He sent it to Quincy to get his opinion, and he said it was a masterpiece.
Great job Ken I love the way you analyze it Michael Jackson one of the best in his days miss you
Great to hear how Michael build up his song. Beautifully cut into pieces without losing the song. Well explained.
This was really neat! Thanks for sharing Ken! 🎵👍
Never realized any of this Ken. Thanks! Goes to show u, it takes hard work and repetition to get a solid finished product. No matter who you are. My understanding is, he was totally worn down when he was trying to rehearse during his final tour etc. The perfectionist he was, I have no doubt he pushed himself to a point of exhaustion, and beyond. Its a testament to the tireless worker he was. Thanks for showing all of us the little details we missed. That was awesome.
That was so fun to listen to and hear what you had to say about it!! Thank you!
Wowww im loving this, i never expected i would ever be able to hear the original recorded sound of his voice... Thank youuu Ken sir for making learning sooo fun nd knowledgable.. God bless you 🙏
Gotta do dirty Diana, what of his best vocals.
Hey Ken! Great vid!😎
Fascinating. Thanks for explaining all this, Ken!
Woooow amazing analysis. I haven't heard that perspective yet on the whole you tube. Just as i thought there is nothing I could learn about MJ recording. thanks
Great video as usual!👍🏼
The staccato way of singing was probably James Brown's influence. MJ was a big fan of the Godfather of Soul.
Quincy Jones is also the man who discovered Bob James.
your stuff is so great!!!
I love it!! Great video, Kenny! Keep it up! 😁☺️⭐
Jay xx :)
Memorable song
Awesome Ken, i really love this song so much, and the music video is amazing as well. I also love how much you repeat that everyone has to work for it, even amazing singers like Michael Jackson. That should inspire people to sing, and that is just awesome Ken, you´re an amazing vocal coach and also very good at analyzing these isolated vocals, and just say it as it is, without ever being disrespectful to the artist. :)
So interesting. Thank you SO much for this
Your intonation and recall are SUPERB!!
Even geniuses have to put in a little work! Love you Ken, that was very interesting to learn about Michael Jackson.
Best vocal coach in the world as well as the world's best vocal channel!!!
Love the transparency
Love this!!!
Amazes me how pumped these records turn out. Compared to Opera, people like M.J and Mariah Carey are barely breathing. You can hear all the breathiness when the tracks are isolated. Like they are eating the microphone lol. Then boom, little EQ, reverbs, delays, over dubs and it's amazingly full. I also didn't hear the nasality in finished recordings, he has a good amount.
as a big fan of music, everything about this video is awesome. just subscribed looking forward to watching more
"Even Michael Jackson has to work at this" nice Mr. Tamplin, thanks for yr awesome work!
Really good insight on Michael Jackson's vocal recording process suppose you want the albums and tracks to sound polished. It's good to hear live performances and even that is adjusted to ensure a good result!
great one! It is amazing you can play tracks over each other and the detail that he took in replicating every single sound. Never knew that !!! great education!
Thank you! Cheers!
Michael Jackson's thriller has got be one of the best music videos made ever it can't get no better than werewolves and zombies a little bit of horror in there which I love one of my favorite videos and it was like number 1 when it came out that video was thriller Ken spooks and creeps hahaha Vincent price creepy laugh terrifying Ken it's a great song also Michael sings the song great with his great voice Michael sing it great I can hear the difference Ken in his voice interesting pointers thanks for pointing these things out interesting Michael had some funny vibrato cool I can totally heart all the differences in these takes Ken cool isolated vocals 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Personally, I liked Ghosts better, but that’s a matter of taste 😊
I like ghosts also I like them all would be neat to see some ghosts in it as well buddy 😊
Credit to John Landis, who brought his A game to the set.
Good analysis and explanation. Even the geniuses have to work at their work product.
Amazing wow such a power !
Oh yeah! I'm glad you bring back your "Isolated Vocals and Analysis" series. I understand you haven't done that in a while, neither your "What Makes This Singer Great?" series because of your concern with a copyright strike and you don't want your channel to get taken down.
Just trying to keep content interesting.
This was fun. MJJ has always been one of my favourite artists (with Nat King Cole) I also get a kick when Ken sings some of the phrases. Keep on keeping on. Kindly, Craig.
It is pretty astonishing that you have access in this material.
he was SO great !
I love your channel ^^
Awesome insight on this song Ken,, thank you
Great video, I really enjoy these isolated vocals. Gives a real insight into the process. I just wanted to mention that the final take did not use the line " You close your eyes and realise this is your imagination" They used "You close your eyes, and hope that this is just imagination"
Ecellent analysis Ken. However, when I watched, 'This Is It', Michael was extremely specific. Someone asks him about playing his music, specifics, ect., and he says, 'Play it exactly like the record!' So all the nuances would be required, to his exacting standards.
I love how you disect this.
The first track seems the closest to the final version to me. He actually got it right the first try.
I love that the boys from Toto worked on this album. Those guys were insane session musicians.
I think they provided Human Nature accidentally because it was on the B side of a demo they sent him and MJ and Quincy just left it to play while they cracked on with something, then it came on and Michael liked it more not realising it wasn’t a demo meant for him.
Thanks Ken...it is amazing to MJ have 7 takes of the Thriller, not easy to do this song...great job!
The KING!!
There is so much to learn from these videos. This performing while singing I do that too - however I still never release anything because I don’t think my voice is good enough.
And the fact that he preplanned all the parts is even more fascinating to me.
My favorite Stevie Wonder song is "All I Do" and MJJ sings background with a couple of other great vocalists
Quincy Jones knew how to produce Michael's sounds and played great jazz back in the day
Michael sang in "beat box" the micro-melodies were just part of the beats in his head.
all was premeditated.. preplanned.. wow.. 7 or more takes.. Michael was a real perfectionist :) RIP..
"There's no egg-scaping?!" LOL!
Just subscribed to you're awesome channel 👍
So cool as the soft you did
I can actually hear the difference quite easily and before you said the 3rd take is the one they took I knew it. I could hear that it was the best take.
Very interesting! Michael was a true professional. I'd love to hear your thoughts on Smooth Criminal, particularly the way Michael sings the verses. Perhaps in a future video!
Interesting when you talked about microphone placement...necessary as would allow Michael movement & the track could capture more soulful authenticity & emotion. Probably difficult for some singers (who also play an instrument & need to record both at the same time to get the right vocal sound)? In a whole different genre, I read the spiritual elements of Keith Green's recordings were not captured fully unless he was playing and singing at the same time on the same track. Thanks for the analysis...enjoying your "then/now" videos too 👍
Woooow you Rock!
King 👑
YESSSSSS
SO SHWEEEETTT...much love Tee with LIONS NAMED LEO.[the music worldwide}
and oooo cool..!!!
You need to dive into Earth Song!! Much love from Germany, big MJ Fan here! He was beyond Genius my Lord!! 😩
We said that's the one they used at the same time. I could tell that the first take was the one used in the original song.
It is always interesting to see inner kitchen.
Thank you Ken! MJ was known for being a perfectionist for doing a googlplex takes.
What a tragedy and talent.🥲
Indeed.
Well done Ken, appreciate the flesh and bone 🦴 very fair.
