It's also a good time to give the movies a good dusting, maybe invest in sleeves for the steelbooks and take note of which cases are cracked if you wanna replace them
I just moved my collection, I put my movies in cardboard boxes but labeled them “fragile not load bearing “ but I did move everything myself. I wrapped my 77 oled in bubble wrap multiple layers was plenty safe
One tip for someone moving a TV: remove the feet if they're attached and put them in a ziplock bag w/ the screws and remote. I just managed to fit my 46" TV (upright) behind the front seats in a Ford Taurus wrapped in blankets with a sheet of cardboard in front of the screen for a move from Illinois to California.
I am honestly not looking forward to the day I have to move mine. 12K movies. A couple thousand video games. Just those things alone is gonna be rough. Coupled with moving in general. My anxiety is already here. And I am not planning to move for at least 1.5 to 2 years. Moving is not fun. The new house and place may be great. But getting there is a big job. I like you, will have to hire movers. 🤷♂️ Pretty cool sponsor you have today. And that new house looks really nice! My plan is to either have built in shelves already in the new place. Or have them built before I movie in.
I only have 2,000 movies and just moved. Don’t do everything at once. If you know you’re going to move 6 months from now then pack 100 movies a day. Or even 100 a week. I took my time and the week before I moved I just watched Netflix shows that were in my queue.
Awesome tips, Jeff. I dread the day I need to move my collection-- now approaching 10,000!! Congrats on the new house. Can't wait to see your new set up.
Good vid & topic. I've moved my collection twice in 2 years. Great advice btw. I'd add: - fill in any storage boxes with clothes or towels so the movies don't shift around. Keep it snug, not overbearingly tight. - food delivery boxes work very well for moving Blurays - just make sure they're clean! They're "free" and have built in cushion - put the steelbooks, harder cases at the bottom and the lighter stuff at the top. Never stack (unless you have hard plastic containers like Jeff does) Good luck
I just moved and I have 2,000 movies. It’s not fun lol. But I keep my movies in true alphabetical order, not just the letters grouped together. What I did was take ten movies and put a rubber band around it. Then I got a flash card and numbered them from 1 to 200 and stuck one in each group. Then I packed them up. Once I got to the new place it took me less than 20 minutes to unpack and put all my movies in order and didn’t have to alphabetize them all again.
That's nice advice. Now how you have your collection alphabetized, I have my collection of movies by studio (i.e. Caddyshack put in a space for Warner Bros. movies and Back to the Future put in a space for Universal movies) and medium (live-action, stop-motion, computer animation, et cetera).
I have mine by format, then by genre (using Blockbuster’s old system, which I have memorized), then by (I’m not making this up) rainbow order of the colors, then by title, then by the edition of the release, then by the date and time the copy was made. Yeah, it gets crazy.
I just did this about 7 months ago. 2000 movies here. I have the same media tower and the movers damaged them and I didn’t notice it right away. Moving is so much stress and work, movers or not!
My stuff is in a temperature-controlled storage unit so I use Banker's boxes. I use Heavy-Duty boxes for the base and then standards for the top, so none of the boxes take weight they can't handle.
Moved into my first place two years ago, I packed the movies into big cardboard boxes, there's nothing quite as satisfactory as when they fit perfectly, like PERFECTLY in the box, that was especially true for DVDs.
I’ve always been a minimalist (I know it’s not for everyone) but a couple of years ago I got into collecting. I moved six months ago and it was such a pain moving my Blu-rays and I only had about 70. It triggered my brain to go into minimalism overdrive and I donated most of my collection. I love physical media because the alternative is dangerous but it is a pain when moving. Nobody can deny that. Now I only keep a very small percentage of my absolute favourite movies in disc form. Carrying around hundreds of Blu-rays you don’t absolutely love just isn’t for me.
Moving 70 Blu-rays is a pain? oO That's two or three boxes at most...don't know what the issue is...if you have a couple of hundreds, THAT'S when it becomes pain packing all of those.
I moved over 2 years ago and had about 7 full big cardboard boxes and ild sorted our 5 more I gave to charity I no longer watched or had doubles of ,it is a major effort to get it done
Great video, Jeff. I just moved a few weeks ago and am still in the process of getting my collection settled in. I also bought new shelves, so building them is taking up some time. My biggest advice, which you touched upon, is to not load the plastic bins too heavy. Not only can that potentially damage some of your movies, it makes it incredibly hard to transport those containers without a second person. I bought a few really big containers rather than a bunch of smaller ones, and that honestly made things a little more difficult.
Last time I moved I had around 500-600 movies, I've been in this place for 10 years and now i have about the same as you, a little under 3000 movies in total. I'm a renter so I don't look forward to the day when I eventually have to move.... Just for trivia's sake, Amazon Australia are charging $70 apiece for those Sterilite boxes. There are far cheaper local alternatives of course but I thought that price on Amazon was worth mentioning.
Hey jeff, i recently moved to my new home. I had over 100 medium boxes from Home Depot. Have of the boxes had movies and the other half had slipcovers. I had to separate them cause when I first moved the first time, half of them got crushed. It was mostly the slipcovers. But eventually I bought those slipcovers again. So when I started in settle into my new home, I started do my take out my movies and slipcovers. And just as I expected, everything was still in mint condition.
Hey, wanted to share my ease of concern to an extent. I moved from the Alabama to California in the middle of summer with a Penske Truck, I then moved back across country. The heat was in the triple digits. But point being, my 2500 movie collection was in the back of that hot Penske truck for atleast 6 days total in boxes, they were fine so be at ease my friend. I drove Route 66 both times and if mine survived that heat you will be good to go!
That new house looks great! Good luck with all the moving! Also, does anyone know if I can buy separate Blu-ray cases and specific movie sleeves? I have a Blu-Ray case that’s pretty dinged up, case and sleeve. (Fortunately the disc is good though)
I have poly sleeves for every single media item I own, DVD, Blu Ray, 4K, Vinyl, Laserdisc-{sold them all} but they all had poly sleeves. I use Comic size polys for Arrow box sets. It is worth the investment for polys and heavy duty plastic containers. Some types are stronger than others. True they are not as eye catching on the shelf with various poly sleeves poking out but they protect your O-Rings, Slip boxes and steel books from scratches, scuffs and scrapes.
I moved from Hawaii to the Northwest last year. My collection was probably around 1600 Blu-rays and 1000 DVDs plus video games and all the home theater gear to go with it. The packing I did was very similar to what you did-storage bins. The hardest part was sweating out the nearly two months it took for them to be shipped over on the container ship.
God bless you on your move and best wishes with your new house it is very exciting being a homeowner it is a labor of love we have been in our home for 20 years and I can't imagine I guess it's true when they say you don't know how much stuff you have until you have to move it
When I moved to the US in '97, I left my 700+ VHS movie collection behind with my mom. Over time she sold the entire collection, which was fine by me. ( I also had about 100 Laser discs, which I sold to a collector before I moved.) Today I have over 1000 movies again! Still living in the US, never moving again...
Here's what I did, this works with small and medium shelves, but may not work with the large ones as it gets really heavy. I just used some industrial saran wrap, wrapped up my shelves with the movies still on them, and moved them as one whole unit.
Ha, your probably right about all of this but last year we moved into our first house, about a 20 minute move, and I just threw my 1000 movies in boxes and in my Honda accord, worked for our move but if it was longer distance I would have taken more time and care with my collection, it also helped that most of my collection at the time was used DVDs from Goodwills, since then I have gotten into collecting more expensive blurays from Boutique labels but would still have 6 large boxes of cheaper DVD filler titles
I got a move coming up at end of the year and I'm getting nervous and excited about the process with my physical media. I am terrified of moving my TV but this made me feel more confident. Lots of good info here.
When I was getting married and moving into my future wife's house I kept my boxes small and used cardboard to move over 6,000+ movies just over 13 years ago. Plastic boxes can easily crack and is a good tip you added about not stacking them more than 2 boxes.
I would suggest putting desiccant bags in the storage boxes to safeguard against humidity if you plan to store valuable items for long periods of time.
Those are some great tips to know. What I've done for years is pack about 60 VHS or 90 DVDS in a white banker box, then put it in a UHAUL box and write very fragile, & somehow when I moved years ago they all made it where i am. Congrats on the Move, can't wait to the new media room.
Does anyone know if Prepac ships to México? I've been searching for cabinets for my blu-ray and videogames collection. The ones they made look fantastic.
Great video. I recently moved my collection. While mine is only approximately 800, I did use the plastic totes like you did in this video and was very pleased with the results.
Very good tips for moving movies and other things Jeff I know how it feels I had to move a lot of my movies out of my apartment once it was rough not easy at all and can be stressful but yeah I always pack up my things early if I have to move out of someplace I hope everything goes well with your move therapy does help mental health is important stay safe and healthy Jeff 🆒🆒👍👍
Did you use a different camera for this video? Was watching a few of your vids on my LG OLED and this one caused it to go into full HLG HDR mode - very bright and colourful compared to other vids here.
I feel ya. I moved my entire collection last year. Luckily, I only moved five miles away so I could do a lot of small trips and keep my collection pretty much in order.
Great video! Very insightful! Thnx for the clip-I’ve wondered how I’m gonna move all these films I’ve collected over the years. Beautiful new home, buddy! Congrats on the house
Wanted to check with you sense you had the original Halloween shout set but appears that all the exclusive special features from that set are spread out on the 1-5 4k’s am I right or should I go ahead and buy that bonus disk separately
Jeff I’m moving into a new place of my own here soon and I am very excited. I am currently putting away my books and films and am dying haha. Watching this to feel better and cuz I love ur channel, thoughts on the new collaboration with janus and criterion?
Janus and Criterion have been a thing for over 40 years. Janus Films (a notable arthouse and revival distributor), HomeVision (a home video company), and Voyager (a software company) all came together to create Criterion, who initially released high-tech and high-quality laserdiscs of movies. Janus Contemporaries is a label of Janus Films, and that label is now releasing some newer titles.
We had to move a few years ago after a flood. Fortunately my media and comics were on the second floor. Unfortunately I had 21 file cabinets full of comics and probably between 5-8 thousand dvds and blu-rays to move. If I had to move again it would be an even bigger nightmare as my media collection now sits at 16,500 +.
Congratulations on the new home I don't even want to think about moving my collection and I want to sell my current place here in WA but with an upwards of 8000+++ I may be staying put for now. Hang in there with the move looking forward to your new studio..
I have around 300 movies and I'd like to get one of those rotating shelves but even the cheap ones are $200 and not made of real wood just wondering how flimsy are those?
Hello Jeff..LOVE the channel and thank you. Here is my question that I am sure you have gotten this alot, but I must ask. I collect movies myself, and still buy physical media. I know there are movie lovers out there that ...1) Stream their movies from Netflix , Hulu, HBO..etc. 2) Collect physical movies like yourself, and 3) People who collect their physical copies, but rip their collection to a hard drive, and watch their films through Plex or Kodi. Have you ever thought of doing this ? Hard Drives are really cheap, so cheap that you dont even have to compress the movie anymore, you can just copy the entire blu-ray (yes, it is "illegal") but its not like you have to share them across a network. Your thoughts? Thank you again for the channel
Most of my collection is in plastic bins in a storage unit that gets very hot. It is a dry heat fortunately. I just don’t have any other options right now and I can only hope the heat won’t ruin my collection
Hey jeff when I moved my collection I used similar totes from Home Depot and for speaker’s and electronics I got rolls of bubble wrap and wrapped the shit out of everything and fit them in the bigger totes. I also have my own enclosed trailer so I didn’t hire a moving company but the bubble wrap with packing tape worked great
Great tips, Jeff! I am moving early next month and really worried about transporting my 55” OLED. I still have the original box but the tv is so heavy and slick that I will need to be super careful about it.
I put all my movies into a cardboard box and luckily all of them still in great condition, all we can do is try our best at moving these things. The plastic boxes are a great idea as they can be used to move movies and after that store things away like Christmas decorations for example. With a TV I just but it in my car with my thick bed blanket, it's a lg c9 65inch and is in perfect condition, later on I ended up wall mounting and I noticed a weird scratch like on it which is only visible at an angle. I'll be moving again soon looking for new property. Yeah the scratch line might be from when i was trying to put the wall brackets on, maybe some burn in will make it possible for me to have a new screen. My PC doesn't play nice on my LG C9 so maybe I could use the warranty, im ranting lol. Anyway the line is so hard to see, but still bothers me knowing me screen is so almost perfect
Question when either packing away or putting back up are you thinking about doing an entire inventory on your discs? Do you or any of the other collectors here use or recommend media collector's software so you know your collection? That will help you when you buy New not to get copies you have now.
I had to move unexpectedly a few months ago from one apartment unit to another in the same complex due to a broken water pipe. I have 500 movies and 500 books and moving them was daunting. Moving all that media is something I never want to do again. I looked at my Kindle and thought how much easier my life would be with all my books on that device.
I use to collect movies in their cases, then I built an HTPC, and now I throw away the dvd case and put the dvd in a case after burning the dvd. it's a space savoir and watching movies on an HTPC is easier.
you could also wrap your shelves in plastic wrapping film and just pack the shelves. you dont have to unpack all the films too. this depends on the shelves of course
I feel for you. Five years ago we moved from our home of 30 years; it was much, much, more difficult than I could have imagined. My #1 recommendation is make sure you have adequate insurance, even if you need to pay more. Normally, moving damage compensation is just based on a per pound basis, as if they're moving a load of wheat or something. In our move, the truck had a leaky roof and the rain ruined a bunch of boxes of books (yep apparently moving companies aren't responsible if their trucks aren't weather resistant); glad we had them insured. Fantastic-looking new house BTW.
I know it's too late but, I would've saran wrapped the whole media towers ala warehouse pallet style. That way you don't have to remove all your discs and you could use your container for something else. Then just used a dolly to carry it.
Congrats on the move Jeff. Moving is a bear but it's looks like you've planned well for your media collection. Looking forward to your first video from your new HQ!
Oh, the combined joy of going through your collection and dread of having to move it all. At least it’s not 1500 books, like I had to deal with when I got new shelves. Always a good idea to mind the climate you store your valuable collection in, but also I wouldn’t worry to much if it’s just a day or two. I think it was you who did a video on disc rot a few years back. I’ve never experienced such a thing, and I’ve had home burned CDs lying in a car for 10+ years in Sweden, where summers get up tp 30-35 Celsius (hotter inside a Su warm car) and winters go down to -15 or lower and humidity is all over the place, often quite high since I’m close to the sea. They all, still play fine, as does a bunch of old cassette tapes my grandpa stored in a car without AC for 15 years. I had a valet of DVDs with me when backpacking in New Zealand that also spend a lot of time in a car, or else just laying out, often close to open doors or windows in the hot summer, or quite literally next to an active fire place in the cold autumn, and they also play fine still, except one that go scratched up pretty badly, but that was due to poor handling as many people borrowed that movie from me (and also I’d bought it second hand so it wasn’t the best to begin with and just regular DVD so not BD protection). That’s not to say that you should care properly for your collection, or that disc rot can’t happen, just don’t make a bigger deal than it is putting them in storage for a few days, I’d be more worried about things maybe shifting and falling during the actual move and thus damaging them, than I would be the climate thing.
I’m literally terrified of breaking my bedroom floor in my current house (parents’ house). There’s literally a metric ton of weight up there. The stuff in there is pretty heavy too. 😁
I hope I never have to move again! I have a ton of Blu-Rays, 4Ks DVDs, vinyl, CDs, reel to reel tapes, 8-tracks… then the equipment… you sound like you got it all worked out but personally I wouldn’t trust anyone with my collection or equipment. Especially my vintage audio equipment. Good luck with the move Jeff!!
Nice job man, looks great! I've got a question. Do you guys think slipcovers are very important, or is just preference, because lately I've been obsessing over whether a blu ray has or does not have a slipcover. Thanks
I stopped caring about them. The movies look so much better on the shelf without them. I keep the slipcovers in a box in my closet, I’m thinking they might be worth something one day
Yeah good idea movers. I hate moving 😒 i broke so much shit ur better than me I'd move my equipment myself along im getting older and it's more a pain these days

Looks like when i was moving to my own flat in last september :) I got 4300 titles in my collection and counting. Pleasure to follow you.
Where can I get that shelving you have?!
Great video. I recently moved my collection. While mine is only approximately 800, I did use the plastic totes like you did in this video and was very pleased with the results.
May I ask what brand your rotating shelves are?
Very good tips for moving movies and other things Jeff I know how it feels I had to move a lot of my movies out of my apartment once it was rough not easy at all and can be stressful but yeah I always pack up my things early if I have to move out of someplace I hope everything goes well with your move therapy does help mental health is important stay safe and healthy Jeff 🆒🆒👍👍
Hint…Keep them in order…..lol I found a couple good apps to help organize everything and I only have about 300 or so.
I am moving into a new house next week too. Moving 800 video games and about 500 blu rays sucks.
Great video! Very insightful! Thnx for the clip-I’ve wondered how I’m gonna move all these films I’ve collected over the years. Beautiful new home, buddy! Congrats on the house
Looks like it's moving right along! I look forward to seeing everything in the new space. Great video man.
Wanted to check with you sense you had the original Halloween shout set but appears that all the exclusive special features from that set are spread out on the 1-5 4k’s am I right or should I go ahead and buy that bonus disk separately
Good luck with the move Jeff.
Love the crispy HDR.
That's a beautiful house.
Moved from California to the East Coast. My advice for a long distance move is spring or fall. Inside a moving van will melt plastic in summer.
It’s so true about the weight. I pulled a lot of my collection out of storage totes to sell them and some were crushed a little, lowering their value
Most of my collection is in plastic bins in a storage unit that gets very hot. It is a dry heat fortunately.
I just don’t have any other options right now and I can only hope the heat won’t ruin my collection
Very interesting and informative video. Besides your Criterion and Arrow collections, how do you organize your dvds
Hey jeff when I moved my collection I used similar totes from Home Depot and for speaker’s and electronics I got rolls of bubble wrap and wrapped the shit out of everything and fit them in the bigger totes. I also have my own enclosed trailer so I didn’t hire a moving company but the bubble wrap with packing tape worked great
I recently found that one medium sized HD box perfectly fits 80 slipcover tapes or hundreds of discs. Good luck moving it afterwards though.
Good luck with the move Jeff!! Can’t wait to see your new house.👍🏻
Jeff, that new house looks AMAZING! The perfect New England family home. 👍
Congratulations 🍾🎊🎉
Good luck with the move cool video
Question when either packing away or putting back up are you thinking about doing an entire inventory on your discs? Do you or any of the other collectors here use or recommend media collector's software so you know your collection? That will help you when you buy New not to get copies you have now.
I’m doing inventory as I can here before I pack then up. I usually average about 2-3 per day because of all the BS that goes on in life.
How many of them survived the broken pipe? 😬
Never knew that about the moving trucks. Thanks for the info. Sorry it came at the expense of your stuff though.
I know it's too late but, I would've saran wrapped the whole media towers ala warehouse pallet style. That way you don't have to remove all your discs and you could use your container for something else. Then just used a dolly to carry it.
Brovo! Great video. So well thought out and informative.
Hi buddy what’s your job? that’s a great new house
How a4e you moving the bust's Freddie ans Halloween? Second do you keep any type of list of your movies
HDR vid!!! 👍
Lots of good advice, thanks
Hope the floorboards are strong in the new place, anyway good luck with the move mate.
Nappy boxes are perfect for packing movies 😂
How many plastic cases did it take to fill with 3000 movies ?
how will you protect your collection from your toddlers?
With great difficulty.
Does your movie room get dusty? I swear to god it is always getting so dusty in my movie room
