In high school, back in the 70's my choral class had the honor of performing the 'Spatzenmesse' for Mother's Day at the Basilica of Our Lady of Victory. The acoustics were phenomenal!!

Diese Messe habe ich sehr oft in einem katholischen Gottesdienst gesungen, und bei einer Fortbildung im Salzburger Dom. Der Arbeitgeber von Mozart, der Bischof von Salzburg, ein gewisser Coloredo, wünschte sich nur kurze musikalische Messen in Gottesdiensten

Der Mann hieß mit vollem Namen Hieronymus Franz de Paula Josef Graf Colloredo von Waldsee und Mels. Er war von 1772 - 1803 letzter regierender Fürsterzbischof des Erzstifts Salzburg.

Mozart verzichtete auf eine Zerstückelung des Ordinariumtextes in einzelne Nummern..auf ausgedehnte abgeschlossene Solosätze...auf Schlussfiguren sowie überhaupt auf kontrapunktische Abschnitte..sehr erfrischend und frei...den Beinamen Spatzenmesse verdankt die Messe den einprägsamen Violin-Figuren im Allegro des Sanctus und des Benedictus

Sie wurde wahrscheinlich am Ostersonntag 7.4.1776 im Salzburger Dom uraufgeführt und zählt zum Typus missa brevis et solemnis..das heißt sie ist einerseits eine missa brevis entsprechend knapp disponiert.. andererseits aber eine missa solemnis weil sie festlich besetzt ist mit Pauken und Trompeten

I’d say the Coronation mass is like this one but on steroids. The benedictus is lovely, as well as the et incarnatus est... Mozart certainly knew how to write for SATB soloists.

It might be to enable the singers to breathe at appropriate places, or to have clear cut-offs (with the end of words, for instance).
