for the kleen canteen, I use the fish mouth spreaders for lowering into a water source and suspending over a fire. There is another cap that has a folding ring that will fit it also. But I always place my bottles in pouches of some sort. Both are good bottles and will get the job done.

Thanks, Corporal. I'm looking to replace my platypus to reduce punctures. The platypus bags are certainly tough, but if I add in the ability to boil water, etc. the stainless bottle wins. I also appreciate the tip on having the lip around the opening to attach cordage to for lowering or suspending helped the decision. I appreciate your honest feedback.

Thanks. Been watching your RUclips videos for awhile now. I remember you using the Klean Kanteen more often. I bought 2 of both on great sales. My MSR water filter fits Nalgene for sure. I prefer drinking out of the Klean. And Nalgene is noticeably heaviler. I really like that you use these over the super expensive canteens. I have those, too. Well Dave Canterbury had the canteen kit cheaper than the bottle kit. Pathfinder kits are nice and the package deals are awesome. Hikers ask why don't I have insulated bottles.

Tnx for that. I am bugging in if possible but like to keep options open. Maybe even have the basics of a camp set up in a private spot. Right now my wide mouth stainless steel container is a good sized barrel shaped mug. Its really decent and doesn't even heat up with a hot liquid in it. Always looking to upgrade to something with a stopper.

Great review, I agree with your points but I want to add that according to many reviews I have read (in 2022), there seem to be problems with the weld line in the Nalgene bottle and many buyers have reported a bad plastic smell.
Might be a recent problem though.

I own a stainless steel Nalgene bottle, and like it.
One negative is that (unlike, say, Klean Kanteen) Nalgene refuses to sell replacement lids for this bottle; so you need to be extra-careful not to lose or damage the original. As they are happy to sell replacement caps for their bog-standard plastic Nalgene bottles I have difficulty understanding their policy.

Thanks, great info, just bought the Nalgene after watching your video. It was actually $1 cheaper than the Klean on Amazon.ca. People suggested buying this and that to achieve the advantages of the Nalgene.
Thats the whole point. You don't need to buy extra caps etc. The Classic version of the Klean is too narrow a lid if I want to put in someting other than water. Gonna fit my Condor water bag on 3 day Assault bag.

    I have both bottles also.
Two more issues with the Klean Kanteen is, if the bottle falls on its side, the cap wont keep the water in, unless it is screwed down ultra tight. My pack and stuff inside has to be aired out.
And the rounded threading doesn't connect well to some water filters. I was unimpressed with the Klean Kanteen.
I have only good things to say about the Nalgene.

  • @tramontane3239
    @tramontane3239 3 года назад +2

The threads on Nalgene are more aggressive and tight. Both bottles take one half of a turn to thread down cap. The Kleen bottle turns nearly one quarter of a turn before the cap engages enough to hold bottle suspended by cap, while the Nalgene threads engage sooner. The threads on Kleen are smoothed over and dont bite while threads on Nalgene grip and hold cap sooner and better. The Kleen cap has three parts, lid, rubber seal, and metal device inside cap and falls out. The plastic is brittle on Kleen and prone to breaking by its shape as well, where as Nalgene shape and plastic material better resistant to dropping. I do not fully trust Kleen bottle cap thread in my sleep system while filled with hot water.

Just get a stainless steel carp "mouth spreader" for the Klean Kanteen. It expands to hold securely on the lip of the container, then you can loop paracord around the spreader and lower it into any water source or suspend over any fire with a stick. That's better than suspending it over fire with a paracord, imo, since the cord could catch fire and drop your kanteen into the fire. It's a bit extra gear, but so small and light it's worth it.

I have and use Klean Kanteen bottles. I don't like the plastic loops either, but I use the flat top lids, with the metal d ring that drops down into the lid, but does a good job securing the bottle if needed.
I can see your points on the external threads, but I like the 40 ounce -v- the 38 ounce SS, or 32 ounce plastic Nalgenes. since I use carriers, I really prefer the Klean. but either one would get the job done. I do have a fishmouth spreader I can use to hang over the fire, but mostly just set it on the edge of the fire anyway.

It is 75% off right now and will keep me going until a good stainless steel bottle comes my way.

Another reason why to prefer the Nalgene is the type of steel, the Nalgene is made with a 18/10 stainless steel, while the Klean Kanteen is made with 18/8 stainless steel. The 18/10 is far superior to the 18/8 in relation to food, as it doesn't smell at all and it's very resistant to acid foods. The 18/10 steel is very popular in Italy for high end stainless steel cooking pots, while I cannot tell the same for 18/8, it surely has a slight metal smell and is less corrosion resistant. Not to mention that 18/10 is more expensive than 18/10. www.publickitchensupply.com/p-8653-stainless-steel-1810-vs-188-vs-180.aspx

At the end of the day, as you said it's personal preference. +BauFender I think the Klean Kanteen is lighter so the walls might be thinner. I have the 64oz version and got a small dent in it from dropping it. Nothing major and no leakage, but It hit the bottom corner and it wobbles a bit when placed on a flat surface. But do note that Klean Kanteen uses food grade 18/8 instead of the higher grade surgical steel that the SS Nalgene uses. Also, the Klean Kanteen caps have a stainless interior and silicone o-rings, so most of the water will only touch the steel.
