Last year started the shark fishing events on the Alabama Gulf State Park Pier in Gulf Shores. Anglers have voiced their opinions on sharks eating their catch and it becoming an issue. Shark fishing is typically prohibited from the pier but is allowed during these special events. We were able to catch a few this night as a group and it was a good time!

Thanks for catching the footage, man!
Awesome job with this shark dude! 🤙
Well it is you're oppion

Bama Beach Bum when we fishing?
Lmao
That ending with the popcorn 😂😂😂
Yakin, what rod would you recomend for this? I will be doing this on May 28th.
Kevin Holden depends on what you are using reel wise. I would use a 5000 spinning with a 9ft Meduim heavy. Just your typical pier rod for king and cobia.
Yakin with Jack I will be using a Penn 8500 SSV.
Kevin Holden that reel should perfect
If you want to have a great dinner of the fish you catch.
Fillet the fish and bring them to Mikee’s Seafood in Gulfshores Alabama, the kitchen will prepare them two ways and the side dishes will be served family style.
I caught some Snapper and some Trigger fish, I took them to Mikee’s and had them cooked Pan grilled and deep fried, the meal was awesome.
And we didn’t have to do any dishes after dinner.
Best Restaurant Turnip Greens I’ve ever had, the new potato’s were wonderful too.
Mikee’s makes their own cocktail sauce and Tarter sauce, so be sure to try both.
For adult beverages the bartenders at Mikees will set you up with anything you want.
We had 8 adults and 3 children in our party and had a great time.
Ask for Dale as your wait staff he has the most experience.
Show up early to get seated fast.
While trying to bottom fish, I got lucky and had a 6 footer on the line at that same pier a few years back. Broke off of course, but I enjoyed the brief fight and the torpedo flip out of water. I enjoyed the video, thanks for sharing.
Omg my dad was there the one who provided the tail rope lol
That’s one thing I love about going to pier park in Panama City beach, FL is to go out at night and watch them shark fish! It’s an adrenaline rush when you year that line running! Awesome video man! Are people aloud to spectate on the gulf pier or do they close it off to fishermen only.
Thanks for another interesting video Matthew. Glad to see that you didn't get too many 'gripes'! Stay bummy!
I really enjoyed this video Matthew!
Never tried to catch a shark while fishing from the pier but have hung into quite a few.
Pretty cool video brother, they do a lot of shark fishing here in Texas, I hope to hook into my first in a couple weeks.
I need more shark fishing contests in my life!
Does the pier let you yak a bait out like on a kayak? And what about conventional reels like a avet 80w? I didn't see any?
Thanks enjoyed it!! Anytime you have hook in the water it’s fun no matter what you catch!
Can u perhaps do more vids at gulf state pier like king fishing and fishing for jacks,Spainsh, reds love the vid keep it up
XxoblivionxX yes pleaseee!!!
Will try!
What kind of fishing gear do you need to shark fishing
I know this is an older video, I am a newish subscriber but, I grew up in Lake Worth Florida, I grew up in a fishing family, I caught my first fish at 2 years old, I'm 61 now. I had 2 brothers and a father that participated in annual shark fishing tournaments. 1000's of sharks caught each tournament. My brothers caught many 10 to 12 ft sharks our growing up years. My point I'm trying to make is, I don't EVER remember anyone in my family EVER getting "sharked", In shore, off shore or on the pier. It could be that the waters were kept in check 6 decades ago. I don't mean to offend anyone but annual shark fishing tournaments was a good idea. Simply my humble but accurate opinion and observation.
Keep making these videos for the ones of us that don't get to fish like we wish we could.
Shark fishing is just about as fun as it gets. The only part that sucks is the 300 yard paddle out and back on the yak! Last year we a black tip just over 5 foot from the shore. Hoping to beat that this year with a new setup.
There are guys down here in south Texas dropping baits up to 2630 yards out. The payoff is 12 to 13 foot tigers.
@@rickdavis2235 Holy crap.. That's more than a mile. I imagine you would use massive conventional gear and it would be an extremely long fight
@@operatorspectre7428
They kayak the baits out and believe it or not, they usually have the sharks on the beach in under and hour and quite often, 30 minutes. Sharks that take over 30 minutes to land are likely not to live but this is species dependent. Tigers and bulls are pretty tough but the hammerheads fight so hard, they usually don't live if it goes on much longer than 30 minutes. If you want to see some of their videos, search for the TEAM HARD LIFE channel here on RUclips.
He is a great tour guid. We fished with him and it was the most fun we ever had
Love shark fishing!! Wish I was down there now in the surf, fishing. I live close to Guntersville Al and I am use to catching big cats 40# plus so when I watch your videos I always want to go down to the beach. My PB 83# blue, but I hope one day to reach the Dollar mark. Keep on keeping on!!!
Needs to be unlimited night shark fishing 2 separate months during the summer. Maybe August and September, or like June and September. But definitely needs thinning out at Gulf Shores. I wouldn’t even fish last year due to everyone loosing good fish they hooked and had stolen. Sharks aren’t stupid, they are going to be where they can eat with the least amount of effort.
Man that thing looked like it was scooting towards that guy to bite the heck out of him! Loved it!
I was lucky enough to get picked for the May 28th 2019 pier shark fishing. Never have done this and some what new to saltwater fishing in general, what rod would you recomend for this? I will be using a Penn 8500 SSV. Mathew, I will see you on the 27th. I am booked for a shore fishing trip with you. I cant wait....
Not sure which rod. Definitely not my area of expertise.
I’ll be there on May 28th also! Should be fun.
Have you decided on the line you want to use?? Match the line weight to the rod, and try for at least a 7'+ rod if not bigger. Don't let them fight you, they need to fight the rod.
@@Just_Fishing_TailsTM what line do you reccomend?
For cost Kast King is decent braid with varied results (good and bad) from my personal use. "High end" Sufix, Power Pro, Spider wire....all are basically the same but use different "brand name" materials to make their braids. They can be bought cheap thru shopping around or Amazon. I don't have a specific choice for mono but Ande, of Sufix would be my first choices.
Pier fishing has always been my favorite . I guess it's because that's where my dad took me.
Have you ever heard of a Mortician Surf Fishing Rig? If so, does it have any advantages or disadvantage to using?
I love that pier the fishing is so good. It took me 25 years to finally fish it when I had back surgery and couldn’t fish in a boat.
I tried shark fishing off a pier in Florida once and I had a lady fish for bait and a shark came up and took the half without the hook. Someday though hopefully I can finally catch a shark.
Awesome ! Hey God put the beast and the fish on earth for man to rule over ! Love it
Always entertaining. Great vids. 🎣
Smoking that reel!! Lol. Good catch!
Good job bama all looked fun to me but I love the surf fishing but that was pretty cool wasnt alot of people on the pier good video my friend
Cant wait to go down there and do it on June 2. Hope I catch something unlike last year, I was beside the dude who caught the shark he was able to keep last year and we stayed and talked on the pier all night. Best 17 hours I’ve ever spent on a pier. We got there early to catch bait that’s why it was 17 hours
Next time, reach in and get a tooth souvenir for me. Remember just do it really fast.
What size line you are using
I am one that likes pier fishing. Do it every year. However I am going to try surf fishing year using your fishbit maybe even sandflea
Looks like a great time, I love to see people working together. And getting along fishing! You'll have to come to Michigan sometime it's a hoot hi I would love to have that Pursuit Of The Predator predators it's awesome shark fishing that is like predator predator.
Question, where can I get a tail rope like Y'all used to pull the shark up on the Pier?
Wal-Mart
my wife got one about that size at the beach last saturday ,the blacktip shark is like the poor mans GT, very good fighters
Isn't it funny how certain fish know the financial status of people fishing for them? It's the craziest thing. 🤔😂
Why not wire leaders? The bite seems fast there and the wire shouldn't affect the bite that much I hope
I laughed at loud at the closing of this video! HAHA
I buy shark meat at the farmers market in Atlanta. It usually sells for $2.99 a pound. I pay $15.00 a pound for Swordfish. The shark is just as good. When we visit Orange Beach I crave real fish. Whiting is ok. Tilipa & Swai are not. I settle for farm-raised blackened catfish at Desoto's Kitchen. Ironically, good fish at the beach is in short supply.
fresh mahi mahi at my farmers market in Atl is like 18/Lb sooo much for good fresh fish
That looks fun. Caught sharks deep sea fishing but never from the pier. I bet that's a job hauling him up 100 feet. Great video.
What kind of tail rope was that?
I wonder what kind of damage hauling such heavy shark up by its tail causes to its spinal cord and how it affects post-release survival rates. Especially after such a drop?
Hopefully it died and won't be stealing anymore kings that get hooked before they can be realed in. Getting to be too many sharks hanging around the piers for just that purpose.
He should have kept and ate it though if it was a legal shark.
They are quite intelligent, even dolphins and seals take advantage of fish caught on the line by fishermen.
That sounds about right. Could you point me towards some articles showing this?
I tag for NOAA and that’s exactly how you handle a shark is by the tail, show me mortality rate for this because I have sharks that I’ve tagged that have been caught again and reported.
As usual awesome videos keep it up
When is this and is this annually?
How did he get the tail rope on the shark's tail to bring it up on the pier?
I meant to show that. They had Bobby step through the loop and fed it down the line to the shark
Dude! I'm amazed that he was able to bring that size shark in on that reel! Was that a Penn Spinfisher 6500?
I want to catch a shark one day but this video was good
Did they kayak there baits out ?
Man I’m coming down to gulf shores next month and I’m gonna be fishing if u wanna come
What's the city across the way where the sun is setting ?
Gulf shores alabama, from what i could tell
I will not be coming to this pier unfortunately because they dont allow shark fishing. Vacationed at Naples last year and they don't allow it either and dis not know that before we booked! 🤙🎣
Nicely done!
You know I gotta make a comment haha. Were you guys tagging them? Some may see Catching sharks as a bad thing, but there are very few ways to tag sharks and get a good look at them without getting in the water with them. And seeing how healthy sharks are is key. If you have a healthy shark population, then you have a healthy ecosystem.
Sims Outdoors I didn’t have my tags that night
Although i dont fish, personally, dont agree with fishing for sport. This is a good video. I would be interested in watching this first hand
Awesome video and page man
All good up until the release part...
Great Video sure want to go shark fishing how close to the pier are boats allowed?hope we get 2 go fishing 1 day got my star craft in the shop hope 2 get it going soon
Smokey Wilson Fishing 100yds
@@rickwatts9738 thanx I will have to get a rod that will cast a long way
Great vid enjoyed every second good eating
what are your top five favorite fish to eat?
Pompano is definitely #1
That was cool. I caught a baby black tip shark beach fishing with your buddy Dustin last summer Matt. It was great! Love the ending with the popcorn!
Support 100% sharking is the Best! Catch and release or catch n cook as long as you're following the regulations then there's nothing wrong with sharking I Love hooking up to large Black tips or spins 😊🌎✌💙🐟
My friend would put masting tape on his hooks..i thought he was crazy..maybe there is something to that..
Will u ever do another challenge video like the fish bits one
Yes sir!
Beach, hub and i love you so much and your precious spirit - just a fyi, many religious people don't eat 'fish with scales' - it is what it is...
just keep on doing what you are doing and go with the flow, you're really good at this, especially at just being yourself, and that is who all of us Love, you being YOU!!! just don't leave-out your better half's who completes who you are!:):)
Its fish without scales we don't eat. Not fish with scales. Sharks don't have scales and they are not a fish Acording to scientist.
@@66bigbuds Sharks absolutely are classified as fish.
Sharks are fish and what religion doesn't eat fish without scales?
Shark is good eating. Its flakey and doesnt have a fishy flavor. Also another tid bit, people think stingrays are trash fish but they taste the same as shark.
can someone help me catch more fish than tiny jack cravel when I go to gulf shores in September
Deer_Killer 1811 I’m heading down in September too what dates are you going?
The hell what everybody says shark fishing is fishing but there's always going to be too many bleeding hearts out there
Just keep doing you and don't worry about anything else
Bruh I was there yesterday and there were two sharks right up tryna get fish guts
can the guy
fighting shark can finally stop reeling while the shark takes drag
Shark fishing is awesome. I think it's dumb people can't catch sharks from the pier all the time. I want to go to Alabama to catch and keep a shark in about a month but idk what kind to go after or what kind you're allowed to keep. Never been to the beach but a few times. If anyone has any advice or more knowledge id like to hear it
I don’t think they should do it :/ the sharks are eating there fish because they are catching there food
When Mexico beach was still there in Florida...I got to see a crew of 4 spend about 4hrs attempting to bring one in it was awesome to watch but no way to bring it up and over at the pier the fight went to the beach on the last 50 to 75 yards of the fight some how the beast got off.... But it was awesome to watch.... personally I wouldn't want to do it but seeing it done and what they go thru for one fish was a awesome experience...
Was it closed to other fisherman during that time? No one there!
Only fishermen registered for the shark event are allowed on the octagon, the rest of the pier is wide open.
My theory on shark technique is if it worked its right.
Trying to reel while the fish is taking line smh wind knot's waiting to happen now smh
It is so difficult for me to identify shark species!!
Man those macks produce wish we could use them as bait here in TX . funnily enough thou a 10-12in pomps just about perfect for a blacktip or a spinner and totally legal cause they're not game fish in TX .
Steven Veach Mac isn’t what that one was caught on
Well, since you asked for my opinion, that’s what you’re gonna get. I’m fine with catch and release shark fishing. Catch and cook I’m not so crazy about but I’m not gonna judge anyone who does it. I just feel that there should be some sort of season system for shark fishing like there is for hunting. Cause shark fishing is essentially big game hunting for the ocean. I mean, I don’t think that many people catch and cook sharks to begin with so it might not be necessary but IDK. For an important indicator species like sharks, it’d just be good to have that extra layer of protection you know? What do y’all think?
Hahaha. The reasons why I stay!
Sharks are fun, I caught a 8' sand shark but the line broke right as I got it to the boat. Forty five fight, was so much fun! Great vid
Awesome video always wanted to catch a shark I hope to come down there around September. I caught some nice reds last year.
I was on the pier that night
Thanks for the show bum
wish we could catch shark on all the piers and shores at any size and amount , just that simple
Holy line twist lol
If your going to shark fish learn the proper way to handle sharks if releasing them. That tipper definetly died
🍿
Lol😂
I’m listening oh wise one
Also.....not a tipper......
Coming from the one who makes videos on “stoves”
lol
I entered the shark fishin but I didn’t get drawn
Look for later dates, my friends and iall got same day in late july
I'm going shark fishing in 6 days.
I am coming this Wednesday
What no fish bites they catch everything 🤣
Lol should have tried. Lol
I am going to gulf shores in. 2 days
Good job fellas
Good times.
I was out there yesterday, saw a bunch of big kings caught and it’s everything we could do to keep them away from the sharks
BAD ASS!!! Keem'em coming beach bum!!!
need some 3-in-1 for that cart :)
What’s the point in doing this if they just throw them back?? If they let you do it because they keep eating peoples catches then why not keep them 🥴
If you're following all the regulations and having fun catching your own supper who cares what anyone else thinks.
