Was in town last week for Easter vacation. Had dinner at LuLu's, and swung through the parking lot to check out the store. Was someone working inside with a white F250 in the parking lot. My family was telling me to go inside but I didn't want to bug anyone working. Looking great. Wish I was going to be there for the Grand Opening. We really love the area and we will be back soon!!! I'm from Virginia. I have been going to this pier for the past 18 yrs. It's my favorite pier it could be a little longer but the height of the rail is the best.

Back 30 or so years ago before they had to rebuild the pier, the old one had lights on it and the squid would come up by the thousands....there was a couple who would come and fish for the squid. They brought a small camp stove and cooked them right on the pier, I got noisy and was watching, they offered me a taste and boy were they good!
Back then you could just take a small jigging spoon and catch them like crazy.

I was fishing Gulf State Park Pier last week at night and was dropping my sabiki rig under one of the lights. To my surprise, I kept pulling in squid. I had never caught them with a fishing pole before. I can't wait for the grand opening of the store. I will definitely be there.
Taking a road trip next week from Orlando to Indianapolis and planning to make the detour to Gulf shores on the way home just because of the three of you. I'll be there around the 26th. THREE DAYS too soon!
We call the first bait you caught “squirrel fish” I know they have a few other names. But they work great for reds, snook, tarpon, and grouper.
I agree-they're sometimes also called "sand perch." Scientific name is Diplectrum formosum, and they're actually in the grouper family Serranidae.

I caught a cobia with one on an artificial reef. Dropped it down for grouper and Mr Brown showed up instead. I wasn't mad.

The first bait was a squirrel fish and they're awesome bait. Anything that eats bait that size might eat one. I've heard them called sand perch too but not as much.
Those squid were really cool. Seems like great live bait.
I use a small hook when fishing live baits in clear water. I noticed that no matter how good the bait is the fish won't touch it if they see a larger hook on it.

Squid are delicious even the tiny ones. Never let those go again. They are one of the most sustainable fisheries too.

Fishing with a buddy a few years back we caught a squid in the castnet. He picked it up to use as bait and started laughing. I turned around and he had the squid "hugging" his fingertip. Kinda chuckled and turned around to hear him yell something I won't type out. Turned around again and he was shaking his hand and told me the squid had bit him!

If you have any Alewives (LYs) around red fish love them. I wear red fish out on the County pier at PCB using them.

Atleast I’m not the only one that has chased those reds on the pier with no success! 😂 that pier is a different breed. It can be complete trash one day, then at the drop of a dime it’ll be the best fishing ever. I will say it’s on my top list of frustration with the amount of dolphins.

Yeah I have balloon wheels on my cart too and used it on the piers, I had to no issues
