  • A little background...
This video is intended to express appreciation for the survival of Taijiquan, especially Chen Style, during the cultural revolution.
Chen style Taiji is an old traditional Chinese martial art that goes back hundreds of years. In the years leading up to the revolution, it was already in decline to to famine in the rural Chen Village. Chen Zhaopi returned to the village from Beijing in the 60s to attempt a revival - when the revolution was well under way - and trained many young people, but was at one point persecuted for his practice of something considered backwards and antiquated.
Chen Fake's son, Chen Zhaokui, and his students such as Feng Zhiqiang, would continue their own practice during the revolution here. Chen Zhaokui is briefly shown, as is his son Chen Yu. Chen Zhaokui would teach Chen Xiaowang, who is shown here relatively often, and who played a large role in Taijiquan's international promotion. Feng Zhiqiang is also shown fairly often, and he also had considerable impact on the spread of Chen Taijiquan. While there is a social tension between the sub-lineages these teachers represent (that's another story), we can acknowledge that both did well to persevere throughout the revolution, as well as Chen Zhaokui and Chen Yu.
So this video is supposed to highlight a sort of tension between these two forces, the revolution and the survival of the traditional arts, of which there is little to no video graphic evidence.
