As has been said in the many comments below, without doubt, one of THE greatest drama serials of all time. Beautifully written, superbly directed and of course several
magnificent performances from a hugely talented cast. John Duttine must take pride of place, but not far behind are Herries and Howarth. And a mention too for Charles Kay as Alcock! All three of PJ's 'women' were fascinating and well-rounded characters. All very different too!
There were so many incredibly poignant scenes and moments. I remember watching this in 1980 as a hugely ambitious and hot-headed 21 year-old. Just fresh from MGS and Cambridge. And this series had a huge effect on me. It was the first time I can remember shedding a tear or two at a drama, and it surprised me! Worked 25 years in the television industry and I like to think I took PJ's good-natured impetuosity into the workplace. Got me into trouble at times, just like him!!
But all in all, it's been wonderful to watch this all again 34 years later. From Herries' 'All Rise', right through to Kenyon Emrys-Roberts' achingly moving closing music, I loved every single minute. Thank you so much for taking the trouble to post.

Thank you very much and congratulations for this excellent tvseries that generates nostalgia for the now distant era of British society and school life that is characterized, among others, the high prevalence of distinction, elegance and the refined manners that seems to have disappeared or decreased strongly today

Generalravon, thank you for presenting these lovely videos. I appreciate, too, the introduction to the historical writings of R. F. Delderfield. All new to me.
So much food for thought and visual and aural beauty. And yet another opportunity to admire the music of Kenyon Emrys-Roberts.
Thank you. Now I'm off for some of that titillating gin and wry observation.

I cannot thank you enough for this. I have just finished watching this wonderful series. I remember much of it when it was screened on tv in 1980, particularly the wonderful performance by John Duttine and some excellent supporting cast,

This is my first time watching this series. Much like Brideshead; Downton Abbey; The Thorn Birds; Shogun; I, Claudius: here is another piece of classic television in the Miniseries category. I thoroughly enjoyed it!~
The very handsome John Duttine is the type of man I would marry and be content living with, and in a boarding school.
Can anyone suggest any other =classic= Miniseries? Especially from the 70s and 80s-and British TV? Thanks very much!
    Ta.

Thank you for making this curiously moving series available here. I recall it from its first outing on telly, but it easily merits re-watching. The book is also good - though I defy any reader to banish the familiar features of Herries and Howarth from their mind's eye if they have seen this series first; but as they're played so endearingly and well, who would want to? If you feel low at having no more episodes to watch, why not pop up to Howarth's room for some gin and wry observation?

One of the best mini-series, if not the best series of all time, I first saw it on PBS when I was a teen-ager & have never forgotten it, all these poignant, memorable, extraordinary scenes stay w/ u in ur memory & it seems to have the same effect on most people when they see it. Amazing, amazing series.

    Fabulous, thanks for loading.
Deals with many issues and is very well done, but inevitably somehow simplifies it all,. If only we might collectively learn the lessons of these dramatic interpretations of parts of our history we might even now, be able to improve life collectively for us and more importantly for those with less material advantage and opportunity than we have.

The best single series period drama ever made. Alan Mcnaughtan as Howarth just about took the honours for an unbelievable performance but John Duttine, Charles Kay, Frank Middlemass (perfect as Herries plays the character created from the book) and Neil Stacy were all great. Susan Jameson as Christine Forster was the only weak link

Thanks for posting all that, I just made it to the end. Really enjoyed the school stories, Howarth, Herries and the rest. The side plot about David's love life, not so much. Christine having what seems to be a complete transformation of personality doesn't make much sense. I also can't figure out why in 20 years, only two teachers (David and Herries) seem to have any sort of romantic life. One would expect the younger teachers to also have wives or girlfriends. Still a good show.

@@genefoad Thank you so much Gene for helping to make this superb timeless drama. Very compelling viewing. Certainly reminds me of my own school too that I attended in the late 1980's to mid 1990's . I understand there's a few potential uncredited subtle links between them, that Mr Delderfield lifted some concepts for when he wrote this, as he apparently knew a staff member at my old school during the 40's and 50's. The BBC drama pleasingly keeps these background links; "Founders Oak" being one, so I understand! The accurate background themes of the two wars too! Shame this is unlikely to be ever aired again on mainstream tv. It probably wouldn't pass the modern sanitised "tick boxes" now I'm afraid! Hope you acting career is still going strong! Best wishes

@@davidhartley8252 Thank you so much for your kind comments. Agreed, it would be unlikely to air now. Maybe with a few heavy cuts + 'warning'?
