TLDR:
The 5 signs of Christian cults according to Jeremiah Johnson:
1. Human leaders are worshiped or venerated. It's a cult when human leaders become the main focus and are idolized more than God or Jesus.
2. Leaders are not accountable to anyone, there's no system in place to hold leaders accountable, or if they dismiss any kind of correction.
3. Doctrines and teachings are not based on the Bible. If new revelations or doctrines are not scripturally sound, it can indicate cult-like activity.
4. Questioning is not allowed. If people are discouraged or penalized for questioning teachings or leadership, it's a sign of cult-like behavior.
5. Loyalty and secrecy are required. If loyalty to a group or individual is demanded and secrecy is required, it is a sign of cult activity.

I don’t know if the church that I am part of is a cult, but I know that I have felt marginalized for not talking the same lingo, acting the same, not having social charisma, feeling like I am being put in the position social awkwardness because I want to talk about the deeper things of the Spirit and I am made to feel like a geek or nerd.
1.) A welcomed obsession with church leaders.
2.) An undeniable need for titles and recognition
3) A culture where everyone dresses, acts, and/or talks the same.
4.) Questions and different perspectives are viewed as insubordinate behaviors.
5.) Loyalty and secrecy are required (leaders secretly slandering people behind the scenes)
Facts
The best Christmas gift 2022 that I received was to discover Jeremiah, Johnson servant of God on u-tube and Monday and Wednesday teachings, I have been under intense warfare for EXITING A CULT that tried to CONTROL MY ENTIRE LIFE. I’ve been told by a cult leader am going to hell because I left, called every name from the pits of hell but that’s NOT my identity I smile when I read all the BEAUTIFUL NAMES God calls me in His word!! Am free to love, worship God ONLY not man, follow God not a cult controlling leader and do God’s will not obligations of a cult leader !!!
I’m so blessed to be at the church I am. We are a family and each one is unique and different. The pastors are not elevated and don’t want to be. Thank You Lord.

Denver, Colorado. I see what Jeremiah is talking about more in churches that are heavily into the prophetic. We have elevated giftedness and prophetic experiences above character and the Word. I was in a church where there were unhealed hurts and wounds that created unhealthy behaviors. When problems arose they were blamed on others. Leaders are people, same as everyone else, that need to be healed and whole.
I’ve always felt that religious spirit around “elders” I was around, felt condemned but never could put my finger on why certain people were so uncomfortable and unpleasant to be around until years later. By far, one of the worst spirits I’ve dealt with… ugh.
So on point! 💯 Thank you Jesus for true freedom! 🙌 As someone who came out of this type of church, I'm so glad to finally see a teaching on this subject. It's needed.
Thank you for this topic. I was in a cult from 12 to 28. I am now 37 and it took years to break it off my mind and soul, it was a strong strong spirit. It was a branch off of William brahnams doctrine. We did not question our leaders. We were subservient to our leader. We never touched another version of the Bible but KJV. And If you left.. you were not going to make it in, You were lost!
After leaving I now see that there was a purpose!
The Lord has been slowly equipping me to help others leave and get free, and I now see that not many are willing to go back to Egypt and help ppl out. They run and stay in the wilderness.
My God! Christ is truly a chain breaker! Yes, there is an off spirit on some in that group. Thank God for setting you free.
Often, when we condemn the actions and lives of others, it is because we are too afraid to acknowledge those qualities in ourselves.
This reminds me of scientology, freemasons, easter stars, sororities and fraternities, and Pastor Gino Jennings church

I feel like there used to be a cult like person thar wanted to our church..he called himself apostolic..he held a class. And I attended a few and I had to get out of it..I felt I high prideful spirit..anyone who didn't just fall over him or the group..he seemed to take offense..everyone in his class he called his harem...I felt like God showed me something in the spirit..and I got out...he left the church eventually and took the majority of his class..members of our church with him..he didn't feel like he was getting his due and free reign to use his gift .it caused divisions in our church...
My family and I just escaped a Christian cult. No kidding. We thankfully left to go to another church…because most we know that have left…have left Christianity all together. This message is on point!

Oh I would love to share my testimony concerning this very thing! The Lord himself opened my eyes to much of this and removed my family and placed us with a biblical church after a time.

We dont use titles, but we know everyones functions. We dont use the name leader, because its not in the word....but we are all servants. The Holy Spirit is the Leader.
We call our leader by their names and we are all equal
I was attacked when I asked before with my previous church before, my leader told me not to doubt anything because the leader told it's a doubt for everything and Pastors are annointed

This was really hard to hear but so much truth presented.
When I was saved, it had been through a church that might have had cult like tendencies. It was super unhealthy at the time. This was about 23 years ago.
I got caught up in man worship, praise God I have walked away.

Its so easy not to be in error, if one just stick to the Scriptures and as you said the examples the Apostles and Jesus set .
I think any one of us can in error Worship or have idolatry for leadership especially when one is a baby Christian-we don’t necessarily have to be part of a cult to do the idolizing but how does leadership respond to the sheep idolatry Im part of a church that does use respect honor humility that can be labeled as a cult I think that we need to explain the difference- especially for our younger believers that need a healthy understanding so that they can reap the blessings of Kingdom mindsets verses Burger King- have it my way mindsets
No man can "train" another to he prophetic! That is blasphemy/heresy! Only the Holy Ghost can call and anoint anyone to be a prophet. Very dangerous!
I started going to this Apostlalic Hub…I got out! In the meantime I started digging in my roots as I was always told I was a Jew through my Greatgrandmother. I started studying Messianic Judaism…. I live in a small city in Eastern NC.. My heart has always been toward the Jews…but on my mother’s side I was raised a Christian…in studying Judaism I was considered A HERETIC. I was going to that church I first mentioned…That church is basically falling apart and now I see why because it was EXACTLY WHAT YOURE TEACHING. I don’t go there anymore and frankly I’d go to a Messianic Synagogue if there was one where I live. I found Antisemitism big time around me! Jesus was a JEW! Now? I go NOWHERE! I get my teaching via the Internet listening to You, Jeremiah and various online teachers and I don’t even know where to go and struggle to even look for a church. I’m in a very difficult place. I was baptized in the Holy Spirit WHO CAME TO TEACH US IN ALL THINGS! BUT I NEED FELLOWSHIP… REAL FELLOWSHIP IN JESUS! I need a Shepherd. Here I am now 78 years old! I get my fellowship with my cousin and friends from my early life. I can’t remember the year Jesus saved me accept to say I was a child and strongly raised by my Grandparents who planted seeds in my heart BUT THEN I GREW UP AROUND JEWS and always had a heart toward the Jews… NOW I FEEL SO lost! I confess that out of all the years I’ve been serving the Lord I have NEVER BEEN IN SUCH A MESS! PLEASE PRAY FOR ME!

I have experienced No 1 , 3, 4 and 5. No 1 and 3 were so obvious. Yet I chose to ignore as I wanted to attend a church.

You are so right. Wish we had this message 20 years ago. This can be confusing for sincere people try ing to submit to God. I once had a dream in which I was telling the pastor “no I will not kiss the hem of your robe. You will have to find love in a more appropriate way.” So glad that you are out in churches across the U S and the world. A lot of damage has been done.

I came out of a church that is Jesus Only. I didn't understand that. There is a Jezebel spirit in that church. It is a strong Witchcraft spirit. I came out of that church in confusion. I never felt unity in that church.They taught a class on signs & wonders. It was a " Dead church" with No anointing or Power.

Mr. Johnson, I remember listening to you about a month ago, your subject Gospel of Self Accommodation from some months back. It occurred to me that it was one of the temptations of Jesus when the devil told him to accommodate Himself by making bread of stones.

I left the Trinity Holiness Pentecostal church 6 or 7 years ago. It was a painful process even though I wanted to leave. There was a standard of dress of course but the thing that hurt me the most was that women had very little expectation to be used by God. The church group I came from checks most of these boxes (except they didn’t believe in the 5 fold so there were only 3 titles)

My daughter was on staff in a Christian school lead by a church. Her questions, suggestions for change and improvement , were at first ignored, then the pastor began to be enraged and then pulled her out of all areas of influence and eventually fired her. Women were not honored nor allowed to lead or have a voice.
So sorry about this, hope she has a new job.

My wife is apart of some online church and they are teaching some really extreme viewpoints and are hyper fixated on these teachings. I love my wife and we been married for 15 years so I'm not taking this lightly. She has cut out all birthdays and most major holidays, she is wearing funny cloths because she can't mix linen, she only eats what she prepares which has to be 100% organic or gmo free because she is afraid to mix seeds and the most disturbing and dangerous thing is their fixation on the word phamakia and their belief that all medicine is essentially witchcraft. She has thrown away her glasses and given up her ability to drive. She will not even get involved if someone else is having a medical emergency let alone herself. It's quite scarry and I'm very concerned. Again I love my wife and I value our marriage, but this is what is going on.......Is this kind of thing common? Have you scene this kind of church study group thing going on? I really don't know what to do.

I left a cult that most definitely had favorites. What made me leave was all these married perfect Christian wives were all friends with married men. One of the pastors had 80% all female friends some fake Instagram models.
After seeing this then having them preach and act another way made me walk away. Also sex addicts are incharge if the child care. Lastly, I'm yet to see anyone give up their worldly possessions.

I have observed that if the church is the focus in an idolatrous way. You will often see sexual imorality going on. People will speak more about where they go to church rather than speaking about Jesus.

Is it ok for pastor to put you down when you do things that he thinks is wrong and even tells people live on the air? Me and husband us to work in sound/video booth because pastor didn’t believe in working on sundays which my husband works two Sundays out of the month. He thinks he should change jobs or hours to be more faithful to soundboard which he doesn’t get paid doing. We stepped down because hubby isn’t changing his good paying job. He cant change days he works. Our pastor even tells us we’re going to hell for not paying tithes. 😮 I guess we will get a “get out of hell card” if we give church money?? A young lady who’s not a member yet was told by pastor that she didn’t love her child because she sent her away to get mental help.😮

"LEADERS" , the bible calls them Elders. are supposed to be Examples. thats why the elevation or perceived elevation. 1 Peter 5:1 “The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed:” 1 Peter 5:3 “Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being ensamples to the flock.”

I feel I have a prophetic gift. I don’t see women in the church I go to speaking any prophetic words or women speaking up in the pulpit. I want to remain humble while He is exalted but I am wondering what your opinion is because of the fact that women are not speaking. I know some believe women should be silent. Yet I know the Lord had me read words of wisdom in front of another church. So anyway I feel your opinion is valued not trying to exalt you. I know on Joni Lamb ministry women are able to speak.
The first woman to lead people to Jesus was the Samaritan woman at the well in John chapter 4. She spoke of Jesus and many in that region came to know Jesus.
Women can certainly prophesy (1 Corinthians 11:3-8),(Acts 21:8-9). But the word says that they should not preach and teach in the assembly (1 Tinothy 2:11-15),(1 Corinthians 14:34-37). You can certainly share a word of encouragement and wisdom with someone that you are led to speak to but going on the pulpit is not necessary for that.
