This is an amazing cooling mod for your rx8 or any track car. Cost is less than $25 and it really works. After making video I tested it many times in some extreme Florida heat. Even with ambient temperatures of 98degrees And some really hard driving I was able to keep the 8 under 205 degrees operating temperatures. It’s such a great mod because you get to decide when the fans come on. Also you can choose either fan speed 1, 2 , or 3 depending on conditions.
Now of course they make a fan controls module and I do recommend this for those looking for a professional set up. This will be coming in future video as we build the entire cooling system for track days.

For everyone else, that relay ONLY spins the passenger side fan at full power.
The other relay that most people do spins both at low speed (the fans are in series when the relay is active).
Mazda has 3 relays, it allows them to control both fans at low/high by switching from series (low power both run), up to full power on both (you need to mess with the other relay he didn't mention to do this and its more complicated).
Also if you're just testing your fans, do the other relay because it will spin both, and also you don't need to solder it just fan the wires out a little and put it over the plug, it contacts well enough without solder for quick testing.

Another great video Pete! You ain't never lied about the Florida heat! I never put my S600 in the garage after driving it.....it would take HOURS to cool down. The V12 is the Heat Miser!!!!! On another note, have you confirmed Velocity going out of business?

Hey Pete. Thanks for doing the video. Like Hilario Garcia III my temp gauge is worthless! For an otherwise great car the gauges need to be better. BTW Is that or the oil gauge even connected to anything? Sucks...
Anyway I wanted to make one suggestion. Instead of grounding the lead to the relay coil (to make it click / make the copper leads connect) put two wires on the copper leads that are the actual switch for the fan. When you close your switch your just putting power on to the fan. I'm not sure what gauge wire is correct because I don't know how much current the fan needs to spin.
Anyway here is my thinking (And I might not know shit) My worry is that the ECU (Car Computer) which controls the line to click the relay is in the no connect or is trying to set that pin to +12. So when you ground it out the ECU will see the signal change and is maybe why it reports an errors. Or worse the ECU will be trying to get the relay to turn off by sending the lead you grounded to +12 and that line to the ECU will burn out.
I'm way up north but the summers are pretty hot and if your driving it hard (Because every asshole in a big black truck wants to race you) you might have to... well go all the way to 4th (maybe 5th? If they have a turbo or are supercharged) gear with a little gas to shame them into pulling over into the slow lane. I mean really? Big black trucks might have V8s but power to weight there is nothing that can top a rotory for Horse Power per Lb. If anyone is interested check out the experimental Aircraft videos of a guy that put a 13B from an RX8 into an airplane and broke the 0 to 10,000 ft climb time set back in 1946! That with a Navy Fighter plane with everything stripped out for weight. And the time wasn't even close.
Does anyone know if there is a best temp range to run the engine at? My impression is your problem is too hot but can you cool it too much? Thanks!

Hey bro I done exactly what was explained and I blew some fuses the display panel and stereo unit and dash lights shut off, id replace the fuses and they would just blow again, do you know what I could of possibly done wrong? Thanks

Great mod Pete. Thanks for posting. This is essential for anyone driving a Rx8. The temp gauge on the dash is useless. I've been using an obd scanner to measure my coolant temp, and was shocked to see temps ranging from 80°c to 98°C and the needle on the dash staying the same. As soon as you go above 3000 revs or are in traffic up goes the temp. What is the difference between cooling fan 1,2, and 3? Is it the speed?

    • @petescarport
      @petescarport  5 лет назад

It's the best mod I have done and also using the obd scanner with a dash app. I was extremely shocked to see the range of temps too. Yes the 1,2,3 are speeds. Basically I can be as high as 98° in the middle of Summer and flip it on and get down to 92° within minutes. Also you can put on 1 and just run whole time if you drive hard and it's not too hot. I like the 2 position since its not overkill and really makes a difference

98 is when the fans kick in, should stop when coolant drops to 92. They go faster if you get to 101. I'm going off memory here but grounding one relay makes both fans run at half speed (like at 98c), grounding another relay is one fan max one fan half (like at 101c), then both relays grounded is both fans max speed (something like 103c I think?). I can't quite remember if that's right but some combo of grounding gets you the 3 different fan settings. I can't remember if the fan 3 relay actually does anything or if its just combining 1 and 2 that does it.

@@LethalJizzle cool thanks for the input. This is really a great way to keep temps down. Her in Florida it gets up quick in normal driving. I flip on when it gets to about 195 Fahrenheit and it will stay below 200 the whole time. May go to 201 when getting on it hard

@@petescarport Yeah it's saved me lots of worry in traffic! Turns out the 3 modes are activated at 97, 101, and 108(!)c. Found the old thread on RX8 club I was thinking of that explains the relays:
First a description of the fan system - there are two fans (A & B) controlled by three relays, wired in two circuits (1 & 2). The two sets of relays get switched power from the ECU power circuit and the computer grounds the relays to activate.
When relay 1 closes, A & B fans run at half power.
When relay 2 closes, fan B runs, full speed.
When both relays close, both fans run full speed.
If you want "switch control" for your fans, I would suggest your switch grounds relay 1, (red/green wire on "Cooling Fan Relay #1") to run both fans, on slow speed. This could be left on without too much wear on the battery or fans, doesn't interfere with the stock ECU speed control, and only requires a simple switch and a ground connection.
Activating just relay 2 would run a fan at high speed, and you would lose the stock "two fans, slow" setting.
Activating both relays would need diodes inline to maintain the stock ECU control, as well as being a large current drain.

@@LethalJizzle Thanks for the info. This explains why most people use relay 1. Relays 1 and 2 are of the same ratings so can always be changed over. This is an essential mod. I'm finding that after 15 minutes of driving, slowing down in traffic, or parking up after driving, the temperature starts to rise beyond 90°c(194°f). Switching on the fan relay 1 keeps the temp at a constant 82°c(179°f).

    hello peter
    it is Kayo from Taiwan
I recently bought an Rx8 and we are doing a rebuild this car
    because i am in asia
    It's very hot here
I saw your video~ I find it incredible
    my question is
If I pass the relay directly to GND instead of adding a switch
This means when I start the RX8 ACC
    The fan is always running
Do you recommend me to do this??

    • @petescarport
      @petescarport  2 года назад

I only recommend this is you are racing car. The fan could burn out over time if you drive car a lot and always run the fan. Now I have run many cars in past with fan always running but you have to be carful the fan can handle running all the time. So answer is yes you can do that, and I have done it with many cars in past but be cautious and always watch temperatures just in case you burn out fan.

Very. Every video I've seen on RUclips is either a hack job or a product that looks bad and is cheaply made. I did this mod the right way in my opinion and Im very tempted to show some rx8 owners how it's done.
