Rosalia Lombardo (December 13, 1918 in Palermo, Italy - December 6, 1920), was an Italian child who died of pneumonia. Rosalia's father, Official Mario Lombardo, was sorely grieved upon her death, so he approached Alfredo Salafia, a noted embalmer, to preserve her.
Her body was one of the last corpses to be admitted to the Capuchin catacombs of Palermo in Sicily.
Embalming
Thanks to Salafia's embalming techniques, the body was well preserved.
X-rays of the body show that all the organs are remarkably intact.
Rosalia Lombardo's body is kept in a small chapel at the end of the catacomb's tour and is encased in a glass covered coffin, placed on a wooden pedestal.
A 2009 National Geographic photograph of Rosalia Lombardo shows the mummy is beginning to show signs of decomposition, most notably discoloration.
To address these issues the mummy was moved to a drier spot in the catacombs, and her original coffin was placed in a hermetically sealed glass enclosure with nitrogen gas to prevent decay.
The mummy is one of the best preserved bodies in the catacombs.
Technique
Recently, the mummification techniques used by Salafia were discovered in a handwritten memoir of Salafia's.
Salafia replaced the girl's blood with a liquid made of formalin to kill bacteria, alcohol to dry the body, glycerin to keep her from overdrying, salicylic acid to kill fungi, and zinc salts to give her body rigidity.
Accordingly, the formula's composition is "one part glycerin, one part formalin saturated with both zinc sulfate and chloride, and one part of an alcohol solution saturated with salicylic acid."

As a mum of a daughter nearly the same age this is a heartbreaking testament to how much her father mourned her loss and hits home. Its fitting shes still remembered a 100 years later. Rest in peace lovely girl. I hope you were reunited with your dad ❤❤

Crazy. My girlfriends grandmother just died a month ago at 101 years of age. She was born in 1915 (also in Italy, but in Bergamo which is in the North), and would have been 5 years old when Rosalia was born. So crazy how such an old being is nearly the same age as this beautiful little girl that was ripped away those countless decades of blissful experience and reflection. Yet I still believe she is resting and in quiet reflection in her own solitude.
My great grandmother would have been 2 when Rosalia was born. She was born in 1916. She died in 2010.

My great grandmother was born in 1907 but died a few months before I was born. Grandpa is still alive but he was born in 1929 so he was 9 years younger than her.

A family member - we're Italian/Sicilian decent - saw Rosalia. And her eyes do open, it is NOT a trick of light, otherwise you couldn't see her irises so well. Her eyes open. I personally believe it has to do with air pressure. Rosalie is in an airtight case, but so is a submarine, and air pressure effects people there. It's called the bends. Her eyes open and then close again due to minute changes in the surrounding air. Logical - to me. Sounds more logical than tricks of light.
The nerves in her eyelids are still active. The compound used on her made them stay active. The rest of her is dead though.

She truly is absolutely beautiful. It breaks my heart to see this precious child in this glass coffin, even if she is older than my mother. No parent should have to bury their child. I don't know if I could continue to breathe if I lost my child.

I live in NY in a rural area. Many homes are 200 years old. One of my neighbors wanted to expand their kitchen so dug for a foundation. In the process they found a young boy dressed in clothing from the 1800's. He was perfectly preserved. The property owners closed up his grave and he remains under their new kitchen. Apparently it was not unusual to bury children just outside the house so they could hear and be comforted by their family inside. Our soil is mostly gravel and sand so while the area receives lots of rain fall, the nature of the soil dried out the body thus preserving it.

her eyes opening did not look like an optical illusion to me at all. you can very clearly see the difference between her eyes in the pictures. i'm not saying that this is something paranormal, but i completely disagree with the "optical illusion" explanation.

I personally agree with the argument that the temperature change causes Rosalia's eyelids to expand/shrink giving the impression that she's blinking. The light explanation makes absolutely no sense.

Yep for Alfredo and she really was a beautiful child and obviously very loved. As for heaven, that's a nice imaginary thing, but not very realistic based on the fact that nothing in our world suggests it's true. It doesn't feel good to think we die and that's the end, but something not feeling good doesn't make it untrue, sadly. It can also be offensive to make religious assumptions for other people. *Edited to add: Because when you bring your personal beliefs (even if millions of others share them, that doesn't make them any more valid) out in the open, you have the right to free speech, but that leaves your belief open to scrutiny when you display them to others, and now in this day and age, people will speak up more often than ever before, to let others know that it is offensive to them for people to assume what looks like an arrogant position on something like saying for sure someone is in heaven, or for sure someone has been reincarnated, or for sure this or that, other than what we actually know and see to be true 'for sure'. So if you don't ever want your beliefs tested, don't display them. If you don't mind it, then go for it, but people like me will speak up, and others who don't have the courage to speak up will be silently offended by what you've had to say.

Your video is amazingly well done.Thanks for posting.I've been actually to the crypt of Capuchins to see Rosalia and looking at her eyes (which are not wide shut in the first place) it felt like she was about to open them anytime in front of me! I remember my mom talking about Rosalia and how peaceful she looked but a little creepy too because of those eyes...so keep up the good work,cheers from Italy.:)

As sad as this is, i find it amazing that this man did such an amazing job on her that his work can be see almost a 100 years later. If only we knew how he did it, we'd have beautiful mummies now. She was such a beautiful child.

I have had the incredible experience of seeing Rosalia in 2008, prior to her apparent move to a perspex enclosure. When I saw her. she was to the very far left after you come down the entrance stairs..pretty much at the end of the tour if you head straight after the stairs and tackle it like a supermarket (up and down the aisles). The whole place is an absolute astonishing experience. It takes your breath away, and is not scary but at he same time the stuff nightmares are made of. I went there twice while I was in Palermo.. once during peak hour where you file through with a surprisingly large group (my 2nd time), and once off peak .. about 2 in the afternoon where I was accompanied by a monk from the chapel above.. 1st time was my favorite time there.. such respect for the souls there, and such an incredible display of preservation. Rosalia at that time was to the far left, behind gates and in her own little area with 2 very well preserved persons on my side of the gates to the left... I think they were husband and wife. I took no photo's because there are signs all over that say it's prohibited, wish I had tried though. Would love to go back there because I really haven't ever been in such a state of jaw dropping awe ever until I went there. It's absolutely incredible and humbling but surprisingly not as creepy as it seems once you're in there. Surprisingly peaceful actually. And no smell. That;s something I was concerned about before entering.

You're welcome. It's a beautiful preservation of another time and very humbling. I hope you get to go there too, as it's a very astonishing place and one of my favorite places I went to in my backpacking trip, I would go so far as to say that it feels very sacred when you go there off peak accompanied by one of the resident monks. I would recommend going in off peak time rather than with the masses of other tourists. When you pass down the stairs to the right and into the catacomb it literally takes your breathe away. Definitely recommend visiting if you're ever in Palermo. If you go to Italy, also walk Appia Antica in Rome.. a few catacombs and beautiful sights and ancient ruins.. that was my second fave place :)

God intended her to die cause he had a plan for each of our lives before man was created. And it's not the point of life to accomplish as much as you can.
She died of Pneumonia, even if she lived till her 2nd birthday she would have been to ill do party, I'd know I almost died of it when I was 7, the Drs said if my mum had rand an ambulance just 3 minutes later I would have been dead.

The girl shown sitting up on a table was not embalmed by this man. That is a mummy found in a glacier that was preserved by ice for thousands of years and has no business in this video. Just an FYI.
Yes this is tragic, when someone we love dies it takes a toll on us but it is even harder when they are that young! I know first hand I lost two of my grandchildren at the same time in a fire Breanne was 10 and Joe was 8 that was back in 2007 it is still hard to believe! My heart aches. Watching that brought back alot! sigh..........

I have seen her. When I lived in Sicily we stopped there to see it. That was in 1999, but still she looked very life like back then. It's crazy to think a body could be preserved for that long without decomposing.

I went here when I visited Sicile. She is just as hauntingly beautiful as she is in the video except more. It felt both blissful yet incredibly sad to be looking at her. Your brain almost wants to trick you into believing she is alive and watching her fills you with such amazement you begin to believe it’s true.

her eyes are opening because the lids are shrinking back,still she is very well preserved poor little one,so so sad
I visited the catacombs in Palermo while a young sailor with the sixth fleet, and viewed this young girl there in her state of preservation. Here and now, over 53 years later it is almost as though I have traveled back in time. I remember trying to steal a dusty human skull from the piles of bones that lined the walls of the catacombs, only to be betrayed by the trails of dust that marked my navy blue trousers and the peacoat that I wore. As I was exiting the catacombs, I was stopped and frisked and caught with that skull, but because the Italian authorities saw me as just another half drunken sailor, they turned me in to the Shore Patrol, and my liberty was canceled, and I was sent back to my ship. How strange it is to see Rosalia once again, as she lies in eternal peace, and I approach the gates to eternity!

+LongIslandEddie Its funny that you should mention trying to steal a skull, I went to the catacombs in Paris and as you are exiting, there was a guard at the exit sitting behind a large table and on the table there were quite a few bones. I asked him, why are those bones there and he said, "oh, becuase there are always people who try to steal bones that they hide under their jackets and we catch them!" Apparently, its pretty common to try to steal bones! I for one would never steal a bone for I would be afraid of luring some spirit into my house. Yikes!

I can't help it but there is something really scary about this. It makes me feel really bad. It's the contrast of this beautiful little girl looking so alive and then having to lay there amongst all those horrible scary corpses all over the place and being put behind that iron gate. I just don't think she belongs there. It's like a terror scene and just freaks me out. What parent would want there child to rest in such a place?

I was on my way to bed when I read your comment to me. It was a sweet comment to fall asleep to and nice to know you understood. I will tell you something. In my head I have a room so when anything bad happens or I am unhappy I will put the events in that room and the feelings that go with it and close the door tight. But next to it I have another room I call my happy thoughts. When I have had to put something in the first room i will leave the door open to the other room. It is filled with memories of good times and nice people I've met and kind words. I am not just think as you think, but our thinking's are almost similar. I have a 'nothing box' ( I borrow that concept from am article) whenever anything bad happens I just try to go that room and close that door. When I try first time this is not so easy for me but now I feel that I can do that little. I have some physiological problem and I have to go see Doctor 2 time in year, and regularly I have to take med.
Anyway, There is lot to talk about and to know about my dear friend, But this is not the place. It's really nice to know your thoughts. I will try that way. Thank you so much for sharing.

Once the soul departs.. the body shall return to the soil which is where man is formed..
That's why our body consist of 90% of the compounds in soil.
I can never understand the PURPOSE of embalming and then burying the body in a EXPENSIVE casket when the dead body cannot know what is going on...
It defeats the purpose of "passing away".
To respect the dead is letting them pass way properly .

This is just so beautiful and yet so sad all at the same time. My heart went bout to her father when I watched it, I know me as a mother would not know what to do if this was my little girl. Her father you could tell, would heaven and earth for his little girl and he did. I would like to learn more about this little sleeping beauty. If anyone could help me with that it would be great. I just don't get it what the obsession is of people with wanting to preserve a dead person forever. They are dead, no matter how pretty an embalmer makes them look. Let nature do its work... decomposition is the natural way!

I don't understand the need to preserve a loved one past the time it takes to have a funeral. But that's because I'm of the mindset that the body is the vehicle and once the soul leaves the vehicle, the body is no longer your loved one, but a discarded shell. Like after I've driven a car as far as it's going to go, I don't build it a pedestal and put it behind glass, I allow it to be taken away. I agree with taking plenty of lively pictures and videos while they're still with us, but preserving them and displaying them post-mortem, in my opinion, is wayyyy over the top.
How could you compare a car to the body of a loved one? when the soul leaves the body it still reminds us who that person's body meant to us.

Maybe before photographs were invented this would have been an option, because not being able to see your child's face whenever you want would be unbearable, but now I say, take high quality photos of them during life and let them go in peace...the mummifying thing, in my opinion, is 100% creepy.

Weird to say is that when i die, i wish my body to be embalmed like Rosalia's. It's a impossible death wish but i really want to do it since i heard the story years ago. I rather do that then decay, rot, deformed into a skeleton. I'm also investigating if anyone could embalmed like that before my time passes :(

What an incredibly beautiful little girl. It's no wonder that her father's heart was terribly broken. I can't imagine losing a child at such a young age, let alone before me.
Curiosity brings me to think of how the father felt, concerning the preservation of his precious daughter. Was he able to visit his daughter in peace or did avoid seeing her as time continued, because grief was to overwhelming?¿ I suppose ither would be extraordinarily difficult.
Nevertheless, Father and Daughter are together at last.

What a beautiful and much-loved child Rosalia Lombardo was. The embalmer had all the chemicals right to preserve the look of softness as if she were asleep. Her parents must have deeply grieved her passing. RIP Rosalia.
