"Surfer Girl", the Beach Boys 1963 hit, sung as a one-man a cappella multitrack by Julien Neel:
/ trudbol
"Surfer Girl" is the title of a song written and sung by Brian Wilson for The Beach Boys. It was released as a single and it then appeared on the 1963 album of the same name, Surfer Girl. The single was the first Beach Boys record to have Brian Wilson officially credited as the producer.
Brian explained the genesis of the song: "Back in 1961, I'd never written a song in my life. I was nineteen years old. And I put myself to the test in my car one day. I was actually driving to a hot dog stand, and I actually created a melody in my head without being able to hear it on a piano. I sang it to myself; I didn't even sing it out loud in the car. When I got home that day, I finished the song, wrote the bridge, put the harmonies together and called it 'Surfer Girl'."
This cover is dedicated to my friend Stéphane from Montréal:
/ grostabarnak
Merci pour le beau chandail, je ne manquerai pas de m'en servir à nouveau. L'occasion était ici trop belle, étant donné la saison !

LYRICS
Little surfer, little one,
make my heart come all undone,
do you love me, do you surfer girl?
I have watched you on the shore,
standing by the ocean's roar,
Do you love me, do you surfer girl?
We could ride the surf together
while our love would grow
In my woody I would take you
everywhere I go
So I say from me to you
I will make your dreams come true
Do you love me, do you Surfer girl,
my little surfer girl...

Remember being a kid laying in my bed listening to this CD in the dark, fell in love with the sound of the beach boys. This was one of my moms favorite songs ever and it makes me smile with a tear in my eye to know that she raised me with the values I have today even though she can't be there to see who I became.
R.I.P Mom I love you.
Keep singing bro, please, I'm finally at peace in my heart listening to your music.
I feel you so much man.
@Irish, same but my mom's manipulative and mentally abusive and the beach boys is my cooping mechanism.
@wowitsethan Thank you for your kind words, glad you enjoy my work! Cheers from France
you are the one. no screaming, no syllabic harmony show off. you really respect tradition and make it sound like music, not just a voice display.
thank you for sharing your outstanding talent.
@T3hSill3h Thank you for the kind words, I'm happy you enjoy my work. Happy New (A Cappella) Year! ;-)
@Kiioko Thank you Lisa, I'm glad you enjoyed this video! I too have a strong nostalgia when it comes to the Beach Boys.
When I arrived in America for the first time as a 6 year old after growing up in Athens, I had been invited to a friend's house and he showed me 4 things that were completely new and amazing: peanut butter, Nintendo, Garbage Pail Kids stickers and... the Beach Boys. ;-)
Julien, this is interesting. Your channel says "Paris", but I didn't assume you grew up there. And you grew up in Greece?! What a surprise. When did you learn English? French? I assume you're fluent in Greek? What else?
@masterjojack Thank you! It's nice to see people appreciating all the work that was put into making these videos, I'm glad you enjoyed them. Cheers. ;-)
Delighted you enjoy the cover! Plenty more on my album (see video description for the link)! :)
@Amiduffer Thanks for the kind words, I'm glad you enjoyed the show! It's indeed hard when I shoot the video and do the editing to keep a clear idea of how the result will look when you see it for the first time. ;-)
You are truly amazing! I am so obsessed with barbershop quartets and you do such an amazing job! Beach Boys music is perfect for barbershop style! You should do more of them! :)
@SuperHamster2 Thank you! HI'm happy you enjoy my work! ;-)
One of my favorites. I always end up coming back.
Me too
@awreslr2 Thanks, I'm happy you enjoyed the video and the little things I threw in there for the occasion. It's really low level video editing, but it wasn't easy to make for me... ;-)
I absolutely love the Beach Boys and you did it just right. The half that are still alive should make you an honorary member. Thanks always for stepping it up each time and being so unpredictable hahaha, you rock and are the best Barbershop group I know. :D
@thebighead01 Thanks for the kind words, I'm glad my work can have this effect on people. Best compliment I could hope for. ;-)
Does anyone else notice the sun on top moving very slowly and mysteriously throughout the video?
I didn't notice even though I heard it time after time:)
If you're lost you can look and you will find me
And it roughly correlates with the duration of the video!
Alexander Frank I totally saw the same thing about that sun...kinda eerie 😂
I did not notice that. I was too busy oogling the sexy tenor.
@Merlandese Thanks! Glad you enjoy my work.
Every other day I have to binge on Julien Neel's videos. Greatness helps me study.
@fantom134 Thanks! I'm happy you enjoyed my video!
This is so addictive! XD
@88coldsummer Thank you! Remember to vote again tomorrow if you can! I'll be sending reminders on Twitter (@ trudbol) and on my Facebook page (TrudbolMusic), so join in if you think you may forget to vote at some point! Every vote counts! Thanks ;-)
A minute and a half in...I realize it's the same guy.
dafuq, HAHAHAHA! dat made my day,thx dude
I always come to same realization, but that's when I look in the mirror
@Leilazul Thanks! Glad you enjoy my music. Thanks for commenting. ;-)
If I could pick anything to listen to for the rest of my life, this would be it. This is literally the greatest thing I've ever heard. You may see some comments from me down there from like two years ago, which means I still listen to this nonstop. I want to learn all of the parts and sing this with some friends some day
You should hear The Beach Boys acapella version.
@andyandeloda Thank you for the kind words and your regular visits. Cheers ;-)
@mangadarkogirl It's easy : just download "Audacity", it's a free program that runs on Windows or Mac, and is specifically made for making audio multitracks.
It's very easy to use : you press record and sing, then you put on your headphones, press rewind, then record yourself singing again, and you've got your first audio multitrack.
Piece of cake and a bowl of fun. ;-)
The tenor had to change! I busted laughing! Thanks!
@Oyukyfairy Ah, thank you for your kind words. I'm glad you enjoy my music! ;-)
Technically, isn't the Tenor I part the lead in this performance? Just asking.
Yes. :)
@PurplePursuer Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed it! ;-)
I'm hooked! Addicted! Groupie! Oh wow!
Thank you David for all your kind comments. More music coming soon! :)
Me too :-)
@mangadarkogirl Thank you for the kind words, I'm glad you enjoy my music! ;-)
I've been a fan for years. Please tell me it's not autotune, I heard someone say that no-one has a range like that but I do, I just can't harmonise like that. Still, my range can go from high falsetto to deep bass turning right at melodic tenor.
Thanks! No, I sang all the parts. I'm a baritone / bass, so the lower notes were comfortable, and the higher ones I sang in head voice. It's only 2.5 octaves, nothing incredible.
+A Cappella Trudbol (Julien Neel) love all your stuff man. Can you do "getcha back" by the beach boys?
+joe dunleavy Sure. I'm taking song requests on my Patreon page (patreon.com/trudbol), you are more than welcome to join the family and help support my music. :)
Sounds great thanks man I will!
Hey, would you be interested in possibly having your music in an indy film
in the future? Since they're covers we would probably have to get synch
rights somehow but worth a try. A friend and I wrote a screenplay together
called "In my life" He recently graduated from film school, has directed a
few indy films. My idea was to use only a capella songs for the film.
That's actually how I found you on youtube. I really like your arrangements
a lot.
Let me know if you might be interested in something like that if were able
to make the film happen. I haven't even begun to look into what it takes to
get synch rights for a beatles song lol, may not even be possible. But I'll
see.
Thanks!
Joe
@MrHandyronny Thank you Hendy, glad you enjoyed it!
Strong tight harmony and good tonal blend (since it's all your voice). But...I hear an inflection foreign to this kind of vocal music, a sort of classically trained phrasing/pronunciation that's a tad too stiff for R&R pop. Other than that, bravo.
+Steve52344 Yeah I can't disagree with you about the inflection. Especially noticable on the "ooh" sounds.
+David Bluhm I've heard classically trained quartets sing doo-wop and Beach Boy songs. The harmony and melody notes are all there and in perfect pitch, but the phrasing isn't natural. It's more of a barbershop or choir sound. That's what I'm hearing here.
Well, he is from Greece and lives in France.
The tone is too kermit-y like in most classical music as well, which is why it sounds too stiff. As a formerly classically trained singer, you can sing with a somewhat low larynx for pop and rock and still not sound odd (Michael Bolton, Michael Buble, Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Bing Crosby, Elvis, Rick Astley, Eddie Vedder being examples of those who succeed in popular music without sounding classical). IMO while I cannot sing as well as this man, the cover sounds odd for me.
@Dalemonks Thank you very much, happy you liked this one.
I sincerely and utterly feel this is better than the original.
You moved me.
Wow, thank you for the cool compliment, much appreciated. :)
@TheKaty1996 Ah, thanks! Glad you enjoyed the show.
@theGLASSEZ Ah, I'm flattered. Thank you for your kind comment. Cheers
@TheCndhe You're a sweetie, thank you for all the nice comments you've left on my videos. ;-)
@Mac2Bee Haha, thank you for your kind words! It's always a pleasure to read your comments. ;-)
Thanks. I'm probably going to state the obvious, but I record the melody first, and then listen to it as I sing the other tracks, one at a time, going from bass to baritone to tenor. It's rather straightforward. :)
@mranderson762 Thank you for sharing my work, I appreciate it. ;-)
@Leakim0o Thanks, glad you enjoy my work! ;-)
Listened to this between 50 and 60 times since start. One of top youtube favorites.
@theGLASSEZ Haha, I'm flattered. Cheers and Happy New Year. ;-)
@zumlum Thanks, I'm flattered! Cheers
@intheskywithhoneypie Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it! ;-)
@cawiseguy Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it! ;-)
@MafyuB Ah thanks Matt, glad you enjoyed it. ;-)
@RDJim Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! ;-)
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it! :)
Thanks! I recorded lead first on this one, then bass, then baritone and finally tenor. It's almost always the order in which I record my videos.
Absolutely fantastic !!! I saw them live in 1971 and they weren't even this good !!!
Thanks for your comment buddy, glad I could "help" from such a distance. A Cappella for the win! ;)
Thanks! I'm probably more of a bari-bass, but I definitely enjoy singing bass parts in harmonies (who wouldn't). ;)
@KimGarringer Ah, thanks Kim, I'm glad you liked it! I kinda regret not having added a beat or sped up the song a little (the bridge is a little lengthy), but it's hard to anticipate these things when you do a multitrack. The tempo isn't super stable, so I couldn't really add a beat after the fact. Anyway, thanks for commenting! Cheers ;-)
@THEsweetlil16 Haha, well what do you know. i'm glad you liked this video! Thanks for your regular visits. Cheers
@BackInTheLoop1 I'm glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for commenting. ;-)
@ProfessoraKarina Thanks a lot Karina! Always a pleasure to read your comments
@MrSitarus Ah, thank you for that! I apprecaite it. Cheers and stay tuned!
@meatbag65 Thank you very much for the kind words, I'm glad you enjoy my work. Feel free to share some of my videos with your friends on Facebook and let them know about my a cappella channel. Cheers ;-)
@shortypsp Wow, thanks! Glad you enjoyed it! ;-)
Haha, thanks! Internet is a small world, isn't it. Glad you're enjoying my music. Cheers from France ;)
Thank you for all your delightful comments. ;)
@williams0579 Thanks, delighted you enjoyed my little show! ;-)
By far your best one. Perfect pitch for each tone.
The harmony of the voices is just beautiful! It's like a full choir. Thanks for making my day! ^^
Trudbol, i listened to only a couple so far, but your range is amazing, thank you for posting these, because it really is truly enjoyable.
@kaloo051 Merci Pascal, content que ça t'ait plu !
everytime I watch one of these vids I just can't help but smile. Thx for the music.
@sdstever Thanks, glad you liked it! ;-)
@simim42 Thank you for the kind comment! ;-)
@caterham7jpe Wow, thanks, I'm flattered! Glad you liked it! ;-)
You have an awesome voice, thanks for letting us listen to you sing
I never thought I would LOL heartily at a Julien Neel video in the first ten seconds, before a word is spoken or sung!!!
@pokefan772 The "lead" is tenor2, like in barbershop, where the melody is trapped between the other voices. For this song, the lead voice sometimes goes above the "tenor" (tenor1) line every now and then, but on the whole it's the other way around. ;-)
your videos never fails to make me smile! I became a fan of barbershop quartets from your channel. kudos!
i think this has to be my favourite song so far well done i love beachboys
@loulie1997 Glad you enjoy it! More to come soon... ;-)
@goodideaatthreeam Thank you for sharing with your friends, support is always welcome. ;-)
Yes, I'm working on it as I type. :)
@Bitrixa Haha! Glad you finally made it Bea. It seems you have access to RUclips, good news! Let's write. ;-)
that intro blew my mind. so soothing
This is so perfectly crafted.
This song and In My Life to me are the Greatest Hits from Trudbol. 10+ years and I still remember the songs like it was yesterday.
Happy New Year to you Julien! Thanks for uploading
thanks for this beautiful rendition !more!!! bravo !!!
Splendid! A very worthy tribute to a great group, the Beach Boys! It was a pleasure to listen to it.
c'est un régal pour les oreilles. En plus cette chanson des Beach boys est très belle
You have an amazing voice. Truly an inspiration.
@apou0990 Ah, c'est gentil, content que ça t'ait plu ! Amitiés de Paris
This guy is a PHENOMENAL talent.
You took your art to a whole new level with this video. Wow!
Wow, the clarity in your voice is outstanding. I can hear each of the parts distinctly, and yet they all blend together flawlessly as well. Great a Capella rendition of this classic beach boys tune! I also loved the silly part at the beginning of the video, clearly you have a lot of fun making these. Subscribed!
Your productions just get better and better Julien. Quite worth the wait. All the little touches that didn't distract from the main subject, and your comedy routine at the start.
@goldenxninjaxchick Haha! Thanks, I'm glad I could do that with my video! ;-)
great intonation wonderful harmony.
Trudbol, yet another amazing video in perfect harmony and brilliant quality, keep them coming.
You have such an awesome range. I'm jealous and enchanted.
that's excellent again, Julien! You're making me discover new classics
You just get better and better. Brilliant thanks.
