Thank you for understanding the “longing” aspect of this band. A lot of people hear “happy go lucky” music. I hear a real deep sadness, a yearning, a longing for something. You hear a tortured soul in the midst of all the beauty & colors in their music. “Don’t worry baby” is LITERALLY** about a high school kid telling his girl not to worry and how much he cares. But in the big picture, there’s a mystical feeling & universal expression of human suffering. It’s almost as if God is saying “life is hard but you’re going to be okay” I want that song playing on my death bed. And that’s just one example. There are so many more. The general tone of The Beach Boys is the human soul reaching for something. At least that’s what I always hear
I agree with you completely, however: in Don't Worry Baby, it's actually the girlfriend saying "don't worry baby", and she's psyching him up for a car race.
This is a tremendous insight into unfathomable genius of Brian Wilson. No one has ever experienced what you have shown us except, I guess, the Boys themselves and the few that perform his songs. What a shock to hear these parts indivually after we've heard this song played year after year. I was always amazed at Brian . Now I am speechless.
This is my favorite Beach Boys song too and after that “Don’t worry Baby” is next. I studied music from 5th grade to Senior year and won the band award my Senior year. Music is my passion and I can appreciate good sounding harmony. Beach Boys definitely delivered. I have them singing this song acapella on my music playlist and it’s just heavenly and phenomenal.
As if the instrumentals were not rich enough, now we hear the lush vocals. Hard to believe you can sing all the different ranges. So amazed, thx for your diligent work deconstructing this masterpiece!
You have a golden ear, that's all I can say. You just took a Brian Wilson song and dissected the harmonies! This might just be the best video ever uploaded to RUclips. Well done. I'm just realizing there is something better in Canada than putine and that's you. Thanks from the bottom of my heart. I'll be watching this a thousand times. I love how you double tracked your voice, just like Brian did. I heard a few times a triple track. Thanks for sharing your ears in this way. Genius!
Thank you for talking about the "rawness" in the voices of the Beach Boys. Their music is raw in emotional terms and they express it so wonderfully with their edgy, rock n roll influenced way of projecting that emotion. I've heard trained singers sing the works of Brian Wilson without that rock n roll grit and it feels empty, and in a way, quite unsettling.
Would like to see you do this with Good Vibrations as well. For me as an amateur singer it's so helpful to have someone sing the harmony parts isolated. Very informative video too. Thank you!
Hey - wanted to send you a HUGE thank you for taking the time to pick apart these harmonies and for making this video! I was able to use your tutorial to make the cover I uploaded to my channel and it was a MAJOR help. Thank you :)
Thank you for this massive undertaking. Brian Wilson's music has touched me on a deep, emotional level since I was a young boy. This is one of favorite Beach Boys songs.
It is wonderful to see you break down the harmonies, thank you! ...and for the 'isolated vocals' link, excellent. I'd love to see you execute these harmonies without 'scooping' so much. Scooping is a modern style which I feel takes away from the purity of sound, especially of the BB. The BB nailed the notes straight on which gave the voices clarity and perfection in their harmonies.
Beautiful video. Wouldn't It Be Nice was always my favorite Beach Boys song, and this critique/lesson further solidifies that. Not only were the vocals so perfectly captured and designed, but the music surrounding it was so iconic and melodic! This song also has one of my favorite bass lines of all time. Well done, and thanks for the video!!
Thank you so much for watching and for the kind words! When I really take the time to listen to these songs, it becomes clear that Wilson’s songwriting was on another level; such complexity yet so digestible!
This is the best of Brian Wilson...no one on the planet could have come up with this complex longing yet upbeat masterpiece, the perfect vocals and backing track...simply unreal!
Brian Wilson was the greatest and The Wrecking Crew were the finest pop musicians ever to grace the same room. Incredible times - we are blessed to have the music.
As far as I understood it, Tony Asher wrote all the lyrics on Pet Sounds. I actually relate to the type of musician Brian is. I’ve always been more of a composer/ arranger/ producer who works best on songwriting with a partner. It’s a brain thing. I’m not sure why I get stuck on simple songwriting stuff but have no problem arranging complex vocals and musical passages. Edit- checked out your album. Good stuff! 👍🙌
Wow Kevin, what a painstakingly awesome job you did. You did deeper dicessting than I did on my frog in 7th grade biology class. This has been my #1 Beach Boys song since it came out and you have really showed how complicated it is. I would say you have a ton of talent to be able to identify all the parts correctly. Well done and subscribed!
Just listen to how the Beach Boys did it live from the 60's tours through the 1990s - they did it with 5 parts - they cut some out but it still sounded great!
Excellent! I do a solo act over backing tracks I record of myself playing the instruments and singing the parts. This will be a HUGE help doing this song.
His preface describes what I couldn't when I was 12 years old, 1975, and was buying Beach Boys albums when my friends were into Fleetwood Mac, etc. The surf and car songs were fun, but songs like Don't Worry Baby and In My Room expressed my longing with a touch of Heaven in their harmonies ❤
Really, really nice. Was the baritone part your most satisfying to perform? I think The Beach Boys are just wonderful in terms of this tapestry style vocal art. It’s really just amazing and you did a great job re-performing it! ABBA is also a master of this craft!! I’m sure you agree! Cheers mate! Keep up the great work!👍🏾
Excellent breakdown of the parts. I worked out a 4-part version but, as you said, every voicing feels necessary. When you take one out, it's missed. Oh - and really great singing! You have a really sweet voice and range. Have to ask... did you auto-tune this?
Thank you so much Lorne for the kind words! 😊 exactly, when it comes to harmonies as complex as these, it’s pretty tricky to remove some voices and still keep the same emotion. And ABSOLUTELY i use auto-tune, and I am NOT afraid to say so 😅 for vids like this where I’m demonstrating the notes of the performance, the most important thing for me is to make sure the notes are as correct as possible, not necessarily the tone of my voice, thus autotune!
Real great Job! I have one question: I hear the isolated single voice are double - did you sing each twice or is that an effect plugin? Eather way: Done accurately, with passion and great skill!
I always knew there was a lot going on in that song. On the Pet Sounds recording session CD, the vocals only track could almost stand on its own. I mean, it definitely does for me, but there are a few places they'd have to add some vocals for the places they "let" the wrecking crew do their thing with no voices. :-) But the depth of the harmonies surprised me. Wouldn't It Be Nice is just one huge load of goosebumps.
Lead vocal is 9:58, but it's not this smooth version. Wilson is stage acting a type of singing that all Spector singers seemed to have, which was a put-on amateurish sound. Nobody ever needs to sing like the lead vocal here, but that was the fad. The sharp attack at the beginning of the notes and the fake, "oops I lost it" outro for the notes.
Thanks so much! And yes, lots of autotune for 2 reasons: 1. I want the parts to be as in tune as possible so people can more accurately hear which notes are which, and 2. I kinda like the sound of my voice autotuned 😅
The notes themselves wouldn’t change, it would only be what parts sing which notes. These videos take on average about 4-5 months to make, and I would rather use that time learning and teaching new songs
Great! Wonderful job! Besides, your english it's truly clear! I didn''t even need CC. Consider put aitomatic translation for portuguese, Brazil it's with you!
The Beatles are my guys above all but NO ONE harmonizes like the Beach Boys! They are the best in my opinion. Brian Wilson is right up there with Paul McCartney as one of the all time great songwriters.
Nobody could touch the Beatles' songwriting, but their harmony constructions were mostly simple. Obvious exception: Eight Days a Week. If I Fell also has creative two-part harmony. I'm sure someone will mention others I forgot. The Beatles stuck with two or three voices and didn't do the complex moving parts Brian Wilson specialized in. The Beatles' magic was John and Paul's voices, which just blended beautifully, with George rounding it out on the bottom. Think of it like this: Tons of bands do credible Beatles covers; very few can pull off a Beach Boys tune, almost none can do the complex ones like Wouldn't It Be Nice.
Thank you for understanding the “longing” aspect of this band. A lot of people hear “happy go lucky” music. I hear a real deep sadness, a yearning, a longing for something. I agree with you completely, however: in Don't Worry Baby, it's actually the girlfriend saying "don't worry baby", and she's psyching him up for a car race.
OMG I'm glad I'm not the only person who feels that wishful longing

I didn’t realize how intricate the vocal harmony was. Your explanation is very enlightening. Thank you.
As if the instrumentals were not rich enough, now we hear the lush vocals. Hard to believe you can sing all the different ranges. So amazed, thx for your diligent work deconstructing this masterpiece!

Very nice job. Well done Sir. This shows just how incredible Brian was to have heard this all in his head and to know what he wanted. What a genius.

this is amazing! Thanks so much! I really would love more beachboys stuff
this video is awesome! please can you do Don't Talk - The Beach Boys next!!
Dude, you're amazing! Please, don't stop posting this type of content.
It's fitting that this is regarded as a Brian Wilson song. He produced the sessions and was the predominant lead vocalist.
i've been looking for something like for forever!! thank you so much for making this kevin!!

Unreal!! Thanks. The chorus is my favorite part of this song

Brian Wilson was the greatest and The Wrecking Crew were the finest pop musicians ever to grace the same room. Incredible times - we are blessed to have the music.

Edit- checked out your album. Good stuff! 👍🙌
Actually it was a collaboration. Brian Wilson also wrote some lyrics and I think the only song where Tony Asher fully wrote is Caroline, No.
I've been a vocal arranger for nearly 60 years. Really appreciative of your knowledge here...
Absolutely awesome. This and your other analyses are so good I just had to subscribe.
Fantastic job!!! I’ll be studying this for some time!
How did you figure some of these out? It is really hard to hear these parts individually

About the composition, Bruce Johnston said the best of composers couldn’t have even written the bridge.
Note that each voice is doubled
The guy who writed this was a genius
Gary Asher (lyrics) and Brian Wilson (music and producer) on the Pet Sounds album.

Just listen to how the Beach Boys did it live from the 60's tours through the 1990s - they did it with 5 parts - they cut some out but it still sounded great!
I believe Brian actually used Take 21. That's what I've always heard...but it doesn't matter, he obviously used the best one. Excellent video.
Excellent! I do a solo act over backing tracks I record of myself playing the instruments and singing the parts. This will be a HUGE help doing this song.
Great job! Will share with mates!
Can you please please do good vibrations by The Beach Boys.
Girl, he's not a jukebox. Something like this, all in, probably takes 60 hours.
This is so sick mate - you have a magical ear
Well done!
I’d love to see a session breakdown of this, ie: plug-ins used and panning etc. thanks
Fantastic job! I’ve just started working on a Beach Boys style song. Hopefully this can inspire me to do a good job too.

Thanks man! 😃😃
Brian Wilson in general - and Pet Sounds in particular - render me speechless…. Words fail me when I try to describe either…
You have a golden voice; the harmony sounds like 7th harmony
Does anyone have the sheet music to these harmonies ? :') I desperately want them !
Please do a vocal harmony lesson on Natural Disaster by Zac Brown Band!
great song
Phenomenal Presentation!!! But I have to ask, any auto tune used????
Thanks so much! And yes, lots of autotune for 2 reasons: 1. I want the parts to be as in tune as possible so people can more accurately hear which notes are which, and 2. I kinda like the sound of my voice autotuned 😅
@@KevinToddMusic Kevin I commend you for being so up front about it, and agree with your reasoning. All the Best!!
Brian Wilson is a music god.
Good take! Glad you could comprehend the arrangement. Our prayer is also nice one, as well as God only knows (although it has messed up harmony)
did you sing each part multiple times? Trying to recreate this myself
Hey! Yes I did; i believe it’s either a double- or a triple-take of each voice! :)
@@KevinToddMusic perfect. Thanks
It really sounds great - glad you did it that way instead of ADT 👍🏽
You're a genius!
Well that was a trip
There's live verison where there's the main 5 or 6 people plus the 8 or 9 extra singers. 15 total. More is better for Brian.
Well done.
Amazing work. I was hoping for some chord analysis, but great video nonetheless.
How about doing another version without all the mistakes you are letting us know about at the start of the video?
The notes themselves wouldn’t change, it would only be what parts sing which notes. These videos take on average about 4-5 months to make, and I would rather use that time learning and teaching new songs
This guy does a pretty convincing Mike Love
Are you also doubling/tripling some of the harmonies?
Nice
Amazing Excellent, why do you use two mic. you have a natural delay using this?
Thanks so much! :) i only use one mic, but each voice is triple-tracked to better match the tone/vibe of the original recording

Wow, so complex.

Sir, consider to make a explanation of a simple beatle song, that would capture the soul of their harmonization, i'll think on sugestions!
Nobody could touch the Beatles' songwriting, but their harmony constructions were mostly simple. Obvious exception: Eight Days a Week. If I Fell also has creative two-part harmony. Because would be the choice for a Beatles harmony cover.
Yes It Is has, I think, four parts. Not horribly complex, but it's definitely a harmony thing going on.
