  • Oscar Robertson, the Big O, is famous for being the first player ever to average a triple-double over the course of a season. However, he has been overlooked when discussing the top point guards of all time. Is it fair, or has the media gone too far?

I’d take Big O & West over Stockton, Nash, Curry, Kidd or Isaih any day... not even close !

7:40 Michael Jordan also. He averaged 31.2 pts & 11.6 assists in the '91 finals.

He only won 1 mvp, but one of the most valuable MVP. Because he won it against prime Wilt and Bill Russell

When he retired, he was 1st in career assists, but also 2nd in career points (only Wilt had more).
Although Russell Westbrook passed him for total triple doubles, Oscar is way ahead on 30 point triple doubles-- 106 to 48.

And Oscar had no 3pt line...no 3 second in the paint rule, so the interior could stay packed with bigs...and he was still dominant.

I'm glad you discussed what he did in the context of other point guards. It's hard enough to compare different eras then talk about different positions is ridiculous. So how do you feel about Russell Westbrook and John Stockton. I think Russ is the most underrated, followed by Stockton. Russ did what Oscar did for three straight seasons. Stockton has more steals and more assists than anyone. I didn't look up any stats but I'm assuming he still has the most Assists per game as well and shot 3's at a great clip, even though they weren't a huge part of the game as they are now. Obviously there were no 3's when Oscar played. I agree Oscar is underrated/forgotten regardless, and this was a very intelligent video.

Oscar is in my top 10 list....and the #2 pg. Magic is my #1 pg.
And they are both well ahead of Curry and Lebron...neither are in my top 15.

    He won the MVP once.
He won the 1st of two finals he appeared in.
He wasn't even close to as good as 2nd-5th year Kareem Abdul Jabbar.
The one totally unique statistic that he held was averaging a triple double which he did once, but also averaged a triple double for his career 4 and 5 years into his career.
The problem with the triple double average is it's been done now 4 or 5 seasons in a 5 or 6 year stretch by Russel Westbrook who did so with an average of less than 30 minutes per game as opposed to 44 or however many minutes it took Oscar to do so.
Considering that feat seemed so amazing it alone gave an MVP to Westbrook. his further triple double seasons showed the decline in amazement over that feat as he went from 1st team to 2nd team to 3rd team all-NBA. status. I believe the final one was not even awarded with a 3rd team honor.
    I go
    1. Magic
    2. Curry
    3. Thomas
    4. CP3
    5. Luka
    6. Oscar
So i put him just above Stockton, Nash, Walt Frazier and the Glove.
Cincinnati was where he played in his prime and they did not when jack. Therefore I think his being under appreciated is probably a little true but only a little.

Luka is not no top 5 go sit your modern posturing ass down. Luka wasn't as clutch or the defender Oscar was, he didn't do with the luxury that Luka. Oscar is still 1B or cans still be the top guy next to Magic

@@michaelallen8112 I'll admit I am from Dallas, but still, this dude is freaking incredible. Oscar to me is overrated. He's better than Westbrook by miles, but he averaged his triple double due to his 10 minutes of extra playing time. I do not see how Luka isn't as good or better. He is a better ball handler, passer and though i'll admit his defense isn't as good, it's on the rise. To me Luka has his prime directly ahead of him while Oscar is long retired and if not for Kareem he would never have sniffed the finals.
I have to stop there because I do know he's been praised highly by men who I respect and who know a hell of a lot more than me. Guys like Bill Russell. I mean that's the start and finish right there. I probably am wrong, but from what I see, which is what I have to go on, Luka is the better talent.

Great video; you're making me think about ranking Oscar higher. However, I do think he can be overrated because his individual greatness did not translate into titles like the other all time greats. Even his lone championship in 71 happened when Jerry West was hurt and missed playing with Wilt in the playoffs or Oscar might have no rings at all.
His rebound numbers were inflated by 30% because of the pass of the game and the terrible FG% and shot selection of that era. It's why Wilt and Russell averaged over 24 each. So, his triple doubles don't mean as much as Westbrook's to me, and they haven't translated into winning BB for Westbrook.
Also, the Big O was a great all time offensive player. However, nobody talks about is defense. That's why I rank Walt Frazier and Isiah slightly above him.
Speaking of the most disrespected PG ever, what about Frazier!? He was a dominant defensive guard, AND he also averaged quite a large number of rebounds to go along with his effiecent offensive game. I go Magic, then Curry, then West, then Frazier, and then Isiah/Oscar. Stockton is after that, Kidd slightly behind, and Nash way down the list because of the lack of Defense as well.

Before Steph won 2022 NBA finals, Oscar Robertson was the 2nd greatest point guard.
Before Magic Johnson won 1987 NBA final, Oscar Robertson was the greatest point guard ever.

The reason why Oscar Robertson is not in top 5 point guard discussions is the 60’s inflation no championships until Kareem but he would’ve won multiple if 1 guy hadn’t had his career ended when trying to jump over a whole forward but hit his head and neck and pretty much his career ended which many legends of the 60’s believe he could’ve made at the time Cincinnati royals the replacement to the Boston Celtics 60’s dynasty and averages of 120 points per game and rebounds were 50-70 rebounds on average today nba even tho I despise it is not even close to its pace and rebound averages per game also the 60’s inflation is why wilt averaged 50 in 1 season plus playing every minute of ever game next thing that makes Oscar Robertson seem forgotten is well Russel Westbrook for my opinion oh also Oscar played over 40 minutes until his 1970-1971 season with the Bucks for the first time his minutes dropped under 40 also these minutes are regular season minutes and his lowest minutes average is 35.4 minutes and it was his last season yes Kareem was around on the Bucks as their main scorer and not Oscar but remember the amount of minutes a player gets also will affect how much they produce but we all have our opinions
