It truly is remarkable that something as fundamental and basic as giving your characters dramatic flaws is often missed. Personally, I'm glad the writers for this show knew and implemented this.

She’s way more competent than her experience suggests, being an equally valuable asset to metropolis in crime fighting as superman himself which is just completely immersion breaking, the writers put her on a pedestal
You make it sound like if you have all the aspect of a Mary sue except one, then you're not a Mary sue... I don't see Lois as a Mary sue even though she's a self insert... She's just bad written... Not her in particular, her position in the world... The first commenter is right... If someone who has Lois' behavior is in your life, I don't care how simpish you are, you'll get tired of her... The way she pries into people's lives like she must know everything... That's actually a nice fault for a character, but the story has to see it as a fault and let her develop from it rather than letting her face no consequence... Plus not mention how superman isn't allowed to be super in the episode's climax without super Lois'presence... It's not as bad as recent marvel outings like Dr strange whereby his love interest hates him because he has powers and she doesn't, so Lois isn't that bad... She has potential but the writers need to treat her like just another main character and not their daughter...

I miss witty sharp Lois from the og superman that completely contrast to Clark. And Casca wise. It was always very clear that part of her masculine inclination was tied to she seeking some sense of protection and guarding. Her indulging her own femininity was something of a vulnerable moment which i kinda loved. While with og Lois, her femininity was as much a weapon as everything else was

The "original character. Do not steal" caption next to Rey had me dying with laughter. Overall, a good breakdown of both Mary Sues and of the Lois from this new Superman show. I had issues with some of the weirder stuff in the show like the magical girl transformation and the atypical S-shield on Superman's chest. But I found the show to be good enough to watch and enjoy.
There's been a few atypical "S" emblems in animation. I remember some real basic ones in the Justice League cartoon (usually with future depictions of Superman). I always believe its an animation shorthand type deal. Basically, its simplified so its easier to draw and keep consistent. Considering how choppy the animation gets, I bet this is the best they can do. As for stuff like the transformation and other weird reaction stuff, its annoying because its the team trying to make the series appear more like an anime, yet failing to even know what anime looks like stylistically. They basically just know Sailor Moon and think all anime is like that. So they think ALL transformations look like that in anime, even if some do to some extent its still not blatantly Sailor Moon like that one was. Its just another case of people trying to ape the success of Anime because American entertainment is failing. Luckily the series is still pretty good otherwise, but it still feels try-hard.
Turning the Millennium Falcon into a literal Ship of Theseus is such a good idea. Heck, maybe this whole time, Han Solo COULD have solved the issue, but refused to take out the part that caused the problem because it was the last remnant of what the Millennium Falcon used to be, the last part of his old friend.
A fun way to do it would be that Rey could fix the Falcon due to her knowledge of the new parts, but Han would be against it because it would reveal their location or something along those lines. Both Rey and Han would be portrayed as competent while even presenting a small conflict between them.
I'm glad this show doesn't utterly suck, but it's also a little sad that we are in a position where we must applaud a show just for passing basic creative writing 101. Still, it's a positive step in the right direction and, at the very least, an example to learn from.

I'm sorry to "Erm actually" you here, BUT She's actually wearing a jeogori, which is the separate top part of the hanbok over her sleeveless top. The formal wear is also meant to be modernized rather than traditional and reflects her own sense of style. The studio behind the series is also Korean and so were the art directors who approved the design as well as the design references. Saying that the design is just "supposedly Korean" is like saying that wa lolita is "supposedly Japanese", when it in fact just an alternative style of Japanese clothing. I'm not trying to be mean or anything, but I personally find it irksome when modern styles from other cultures end up under the radar.
One thing I've noticed is some people comparing a certain scene to Amber from the Invincible show, but the difference between the two is rather obvious and large. With Amber, she's portrayed by 100% in the right, and never really apologized. Lois, its shown as one of her character flaws and she does feel bad and apologize. Clark even fires back at her, showing she's not the one in the right. It's annoying when people feel like they're entitled to personal secrets, but I can also understand not liking being lied to. Overall this Lois is less a Mary Sue type character than Amber was in the Invincible show. Not in the overpowered way, but she was portrayed as way too perfect. There's also the fact that Lois isn't a star reporter at the start of the series, she's an intern acting like she's a star reporter, so I have no idea what that description they did was about. Probably just them embellishing
Its not that he doesn't care, but rather he cares enough to let Clark tell him on his own terms. But I also like the potential implication that him knowing is why he is so into conspiracies and theories, because he already is friends with a superhuman, so maybe Atlantis really does exist.
My problem with her is she never apologized for forcing clark to tell her his secret, unless she actually apologized, or just didn't act like she was entitled to know his secret identity. I feel like they could've had a fun and cute dynamic with her knowing he's clark but him not knowing she knows. Either way she should've been the one to apologize and not clark.
Yeah, it's because of that scene alone is what got everyone to see her as a Mary Sue because the show paints her that she's justified in getting angry at Clark for keeping his identity as Superman a secret and acting defensive saying that she would never reveal his secret to the public... This is a lie since she did say that she would reveal Superman's identity to the public and her reason that she hates people lying because of her past is also a hypocritical thing of hers because she does lie.
@Lion_Patriot She does apologise, not specifically for the identity thing but for her personality as a whole, multiple times throughout the show. Also she wouldn't have revealed Clark's secret as superman since she said she'd reveal superman identity BEFORE she found out he was clark. Before that she just thought he was a random person, when she finds out he was clark, someone close to her, she wouldn't have revealed it. This is evident by the fact SHE DIDN'T REVEAL HIS IDENTITY AFTER KNWOING HIS SECRET FOR MORE THAN HALF THE SEASON
I like that Clark hits back at Lois, but the show takes Lois's side. While this iteration of Superman is a breath of fresh air after Homelander... Omni-Man... etc, and seems set to have a clash between a good and evil Superman... The show is called 'My Adventures with...' Immediately, Superman is not the lead in his own show even in the title requiring one to ask, whose adventures are we watching if not Supermans? What I will say is that MAWS does a better job of hiding it's progressivism by actually having people on board who won't let the writers hate on Superman. He is the star. He sells comics. He must be protected from the likes of She-Hulk writers. MAWS writers are toeing 'a' line... but when you look at the unnecessary filler that is relationship issues that aren't Lois and Clark... Then you know it's been heavily coded to throw that elephant in the room that can't stop playing it's own trumpet instead of letting the main star and lead character play his. Because lets be honest... Superman doesn't need Lois Lane to pull a crowd. But without Superman, Lois is a heartbeat away from being in the newspapers obituary page.
Sounds more like Superman plays the distraction for Lois. He's highly visible on any battlefield, and durable, mobile, and strong enough that even if he isn't the one directly providing the win condition, he demands attention, or he'll use that free time to break the villain's stuff unopposed. Lois is the one that provides the win condition in each of those fights, but she's otherwise a squishy normie that relies on Superman taking attention away from her.
The show is a nice piece of entertainment. A story self aware that the comics themselves have explored many different universes were variants of superman change with each of them. Now we have this version, that stands different frmo the comics but it s well writen enough to get a good grade on my scaling. Even though the sticky trends of current writing like ginger genocidea and blocky females are present, the show still delivers a good story instead of telling the story that we have heard a milion times already. I will try the show in max to support it. as i should.

@@ellugerdelacruz2555 I mean, episode 7's order of the Lois Lanes is a pretty damn bad look in today's environment, even if all but the one non Lois of the bunch are villains in that episode. I still liked the 2nd half of the season, but I can see why people would consider it bad even if they stuck through with it. Also, multiverse, especially infinite universes are just as much a problem as introducing time travel.

The idea that Rey fixing the Falcon could have been better excused by having get know about the modifications made to it in the last ten years, while he only knows how it was when he had it... genius, minimalist, and with so much room for two-way character-building. They could have had a montage of him going around and fixing all the mods while she held wrenches or did the skinny work while he kept calling her "Kid." Between the two of them (with Fin getting the gun turrets unjammed and up to combat level), the Falcon gets up to Han's specs, and he sits down in the pilot's chair, closes his eyes, flips a switch... and something sparks or goes down in the background. Han sighs contentedly. "Perfect." Rey looks at what sparked. "Is it supposed to do that?" Han grins. "Perfection ain't always pretty. But it does what it has to." He pats the front panel fondly (something rattles, and he slaps it until the rattle stops) and the movie goes on. Ah, that movie. Such a waste, all to feed one woman's ego.
"Being sad is a get out of hell free card" is a sad but true line. People seem to have forgotten that having a reason for doing bad things doesn't mean that thing is no longer bad. Jack the Ripper having a sad backstory doesn't negate the atrocities he committed.

I hope you can also talk about the League of Lois Lanes episode later because I feel that Lois's character gets tested in this one. Will our favorite tomboy's morals stand against the pressure of seeing a bunch of Loises(?) each with their dreams manifested in record time? I would like to know.
The reason for that episode is to introduce kryptonite and Mr. Myxzptlk. Without the kryptonite, the events in episode 10 never would have happened, and Zod and Brainiac never would have found Earth. Introducing Mr. Myxzplk is smart, because if the writers write themselves into a corner, he can bring chaos. The League of Lanes isn't that important to the plot.. However, it amplifies the positive characteristic of the main Lois Lane by showing how different she is from the others. Unlike the other Lanes, she trusts her Superman, and she knows that just looking like someone evil doesn't make you evil. Any Superman fan knows Clark stops being the Superman when he doesn't have Lois. The League of Lanes don't trust anyone but themselves. This is why their Supermen turn bad. Put the guns down and talk. Hate breeds hate, after all.
That was a quite elaborate and long-winded way to explain that Lois are our eyes into the world of Superman. She is the main character because we see the world from her perspective, and she mainly watches Superman.
Lois: "How did you know you'd be bulletproof?" Clark: "I didn't... I just knew that you weren't." I liked the show before that moment, but that moment cemented it for me and turned me from mildly enjoying it to being a fan.
I think a lot of people are pointing out that Lois Lane from this series seems more like Luz Lane from the Owl House and thus does not feel like Lois Lane to them.
Goes back to the biggest tell tale sign a Mary Sue exists in a story when other characters around him or her go underdeveloped. Even Jimmy gets his moments. But the fact that both her and Clark are so well developed characters and even better they actually have an episode where they do fight against a bunch of Mary Sue Lois's really was the mid season victory lap that the writers knew they had a solid character with Lois.

Gwen & Anya from Marvel Spiderman 2017 get the title _ They hated & don't trust Peter or his warnings for many episodes because he lied to them. And they're hypocrites for it since they also hide their superheroes identity from Pete. Yeah, they told Spiderman because he's their idol but not Peter. Hell, they called Peter lame a couple of times to Spiderman's face. And accuse him of being a supervillain twice to Spiderman because Pete always disappear when there is trouble(when Spidey dismiss their worries they said he's too naive & they know Peter better than him thus Peter is 100% a villain). The only one trust & respect Peter Parker is Miles Morales who told Pete (& his other friends) the second Miles has spider power & was the 1st to know about Peter being Spiderman. But the show doesn't acknowledge this & has Peter apologise for being a bad friend
There is a great scene in the show where Clark and Lois get ambushed by a machinegun turret and Clark steps in between to take the fire. Lois then asks him how he knew that he is bulletproof. He just answers "I didn't. I just knew you aren't." This scene shows greatly that superman is still superman in this show and how great their relationship is because Lois was genuinely concerned then.
It's nice to see the characters are better written than so many...and the tomboy is allowed to be a straight girl (a dying concept in modern American media stereotyping used for lazy representation), but I still can't get myself to watch the show. I'm old. I've lived with numerous takes on Superman and the DC universe and this show is basically Superman dropped into some knockoff anime. It suffers the same issues that chased me off Lois & Clark and Smallville a few seasons into each show, and even Superman & Lois after the first episode. It doesn't feel like Superman. It's not just the race swapped Lois, Jimmy, and Perry and the gender-swapped Ron Troupe. None of the DC character outside of Clark and his parents resemble the core of the characters they take their names from. The Clark/Lois relationship is fast tracked because they want to get to the romance or still think "Clark" is just a pair of glasses and not something that he worked hard to come up with and maintain. Jimmy shouldn't know Superman's secret identity but the show makes it impossible not to. DEATHSTROKE SHOULD NOT BE A PRETTY BOY! I just don't feel like I'm watching a Superman show except for when he's with his parents. I'll even defend the so-called "magical girl transformation" since it's just Clark getting his costume once followed by Ma reworking it into the classic look because it's never used again. I want to love this show because it sounds really good and I don't hate the art style, but I'm too attached to a proper version of Superman, with the necessary changes between media that I don't see with this show.
You know what did the whole thing of Lois knowing Clark was Supes, but he still denied it, billions of times better than this? Superman Doomsday. She actually acts like a reporter, and a human who can understand why he needs that secret, especially as it becomes a major part of the plot.

The issue with this is that Lois Lane is being written as a hero when technically she isn't meant to be. She's only meant to be a very hard working, some day wife to a hero, side character at all costs. And to prove this, they had to do the one thing to Superman that otherwise wouldn't allow her to take part during the conflict because of cross fire. That one thing is to make him absolutely easy to kill through very ordinary means. How am I the viewer supposed to look at superman as a man from another planet given other worldly innate abilities to rival other gods if he can die through any other simple means. Now nothing about Superman makes him special enough to earn the title, "man of steel". Heck, at that point he would easily lose to Lex Luthor because not only is Lex using kryptonite but he's also using a machine powered by that stuff. How could you expect Lex Luthor- a very smart and powerful man, much less an entire government all of a suddenly find Superman a serious threat at that point? He seems very killable now, nothing to rationally fear at all.

The whole "bypassed the compressor" level of starship engineering?... not so much.
They may have watered down Lois Lane's Mary Sueishness to a level that is palatable to even hardcore anti feminist types, but you know for a fact that they biting down leather demonstrating their highest level of restraint getting just this far. They didn't want to but they knew they had to. For one, they needed the show to sell. And two, they still have a message they want to push and normalize but realized that people don't want their suppository horse sized pill that their brand of feminism is known for. Great job, Literary Devil, on your thorough analysis of Lois Lane and this show. She certainly isn't a Mary Sue. She is dangerously close but she isn't. But that doesn't stop her from being an insufferable, annoying twat waffle that the show so desperately wants to validate. There is one thing that does bug me though. The original Lois Lane was introduced and played as a no-nonsense, by the book, street smart, gal who could walk the line in the highest echelons of her field. Someone admirable, competent and to say the least, desirable. But she was always just a love interest, key-word "interest", and not a forgone conclusion that Clark falls madly in love with. Lois Lane had too much self respect to let herself be pulled in by Superman's charms no matter how many times he saved her without at least Supes working for it with a little back and forth, nor did Superman have any less self respect with out the same input. The part where Clark falls madly in love with an otherwise uninterest Lois in this series is unbelievably Mary-Sue-ish. It reeks of it even if the package isn't complete. No one with an iota of self respect would put up with her nettling, self-centered childish personality. Also, the fact that Clark hadn't explored his powers up until he graduated highschool and became and intern and is now discovering his abilities just when Lois Lane is there to help him pick up the pieces and solve his problems for him is also unbelievable. Though she struggles the outside context of the world falling in place for her to solve the world's problems by conveniently being right where a button needs to be pressed is making this Mary Sue levels of story telling. Don't get me wrong, sometimes things can be solved by the right person pressing the right button at the right time, but not this often by the same person.
I think Snider's take wasn't in itself wrong as a general notion, just that he took it way too extreme. We need plenty of both pure good and jaded heroes, if we're spoiled for content, we can't complain. :D
I've never been a major Superman reader, but to my understanding, most versions of the Lois and Clark pairing start the whole story with fully adult Clark who's already figured out a majority of his powers first come to the Daily Planet and basically meet-cute fully adult Lois who's already put in the work and become an ace reporter. Many versions of Lois, including this animated one apparently, have her as an army brat who has some amount of training from her military general dad, among other skills in her background that can theoretically be called up by competent writers to make her look like a credible, legitimate help to Superman beyond being a simple damsel-in-distress. However, if the kind of superpowered threats that are being written in early episodes of this series (the Parasite tech kinda worked better here than the 90s animated series) are any indication, character-wise she would likely be better off if the writers were writing her to ultimately mellow out, be less impulsive over the course of the season or series so that she wouldn't put herself in as many dangerous situations, possibly by learning a lesson or something, maybe eventually realizing that there will be danger and while Clark is physically capable of handling most of it she isn't and (if they ever get to a Doomsday episode) that Clark might not always be there to save her.

Is it possible for a character to have latent potential without being a mary sue? Like they can do some amazing things naturally that side characters/rivals can't, like they created a never before seen skill or be gifted, but still suck at others? Say they have mentor of sorts that introduces them to their powers, and the main is established as far beyond them in certain aspects, to the point they note it, but the mentor excels in other aspects. Also, if character established as having giftedness loses to more experienced characters/those characters have access to skills/abilities/equipment they don't, does this downplay a character being a sue, or at least they have sui-ish aspects, but not enough to be a sue.
Yes. Cause if that wasn't the case, then just being a main character with any kind of talent... AT ALL, would make that character a Mary Sue. Like, most main characters have things they excel at, that others don't. Just to name a few examples: Batman, Spider-Man, Luke Skywalker, Harry Potter, Anakin Skywalker, Sonic The Hedgehog, Rainbow Dash, SpongeBob SquarePants, Aang, Goku, and Iron Man all have some innate talent that makes them explicitly better than the people around them at certain things.
Imo, if the character has things they suck at and their lack of experience makes their skill unrefined, they’re not a mary sue. It’s not the talent that makes a mary sue; it’s the way the world bends to the will of a character in ways that the world establishes it shouldn’t. There’s no explanation as to why the character is conveniently likeable to everyone the plot needs them to be, competent in fields they realistically shouldn’t be, and lacks real character flaws in addition to their talent. The talent shouldn’t be able to get them out of any rut, and it’s usually good to give it a drawback so the character has to be careful with how they use it. The character should still have problems and flaws that put them at fault by their own volition. You see the situation you mentioned in shounen a lot: the hero is young but shows signs that one day, their skill will surpass even the greatest if it’s refined. They often have a skill or power other characters cannot access, but they still have to put in the work to use it to its full potential. They also can’t automatically solve any problem with their power or knowledge they just happen to have. Their friends will excel in things the hero doesn’t and will have to be relied on sometimes. In short, yes.
@@rcdakara Say in an episode, they character's lack of action at a hunch results in their town being severely wrecked. Like they kinda notice a mcguffin from the corner of their eye, but brush it off as just their imagination. But then the mcguffin goes off and they feel guilty for not acting on their gut. This spurs them to give it their all to prevent another tragedy like that again? But later on, in the series or another season, it's revealed that this attitude almost kills them through overexertion and not taking the time to rest. In that season, they are trying to teach new characters that lesson they learned. I've heard some use this 'their flaw is they care to much or want to help others' as a major sue moment at times as it become their defining trait.
@@GenesicKaiser That works because the character is acting from a place of wanting to never make a mistake they made again. They care “too much” because not caring enough in the past caused a ton of damage that they had enough agency to prevent. The new state of mind logically follows from previous events and even becomes a detriment to the character’s health. It doesn’t sound like the plot will always reward this trait. I believe the ‘caring too much’ argument is usually made when the character is altruistic just for the sake of being so. Even then, I think characters like that can work if the world sufficiently challenges that notion, especially if it’s to the point of making them question if being that way is actually a good thing.
@@rcdakara In terms of accountability, what differentiates a character being somewhat pardoned from a reckless action because of the results,, but they are still heavily criticized for it, and reminded that such actions would not be tolerated again. Would a mary sue just be forgiven because 'reasons' or, the person who should reasonably give them crap about it, both because of higher position responsibilities and basic maturity just is randomly cool with it?
I like Lois Lane's character in this show. Sure, she can be loud, obnoxious, annoying, and overbearing at times, but she can also be kind, considerate, attentive, and brave even when she's put into situations that would make anyone seem powerless or useless. If you don't like her though, that's fair, she might not be for everyone.

Oh yeah Han Solo is such a great engineer that in the Empire Strikes Back every time he tried fixing the Falcon it just kept braking down, he’s more of a pilot than an engineer
He's not an engineer. The Millennium Falcon is old. That's why it keeps breaking down. They state this in the original trilogy. It's junk. Han is used to fixing it when it shuts down, obviously he has experience keeping it running, and he's been keeping it running for years. He might not be an engineer, but he does know how to fix the Falcon.
My problem with my adventures with Superman is with how they treat heroic masculinity within the character, if you look at the 90s Superman TAS, it’s clear that this Superman has grappled with his shadow, he knows the darkness within himself, within humanity, he is in no way naive, but he fights on anyway for the greater good. I feel like both this and synders take are both very interesting first steps for Superman from opposite sides of the balance, one grappling even sometimes loosing to his shadow trying to find the light in a dark world, the other lacks a shadow entirely, he is naive, thinking every problem can be solved with diplomacy because he never had to face true danger because of his powers and environment. Both need to mature to become a true balanced pillar of hope, a hero, a Superman, (And nether of which I expect to undergo that change on screen any time soon because character development is scary for exects)
To me, the best description of a Mary Sue is, a character that the story is in service to, rather than the other way around. When story logic bends to accommodate that character, it's a Mary Sue. That does not automatically mean that any exceptional character is a Mary Sue - most protagonists are exceptional in some way - but when the story treats a character by different rules, that means a Mary Sue is afoot. Superman could almost be considered a Mary Sue by that description - a guy from another planet, SERIOUSLY? - except that his uniqueness is one of the central precepts of the story. The story logic is built with that in mind. It's not just a thing that cropped up to explain why beloved character doesn't have to worry about being shot while he or she is getting sassy with gangsters. Usually a Mary Sue is going to be treated better by the story than other characters would, but sometimes they're treated worse, either because the writer is into wringing suffering out of characters, or they want to make the character's ultimate triumph extra triumphant.

Yes, I mean actually seen. From establishing she works for him, character interaction, everything. That way it's well established and not hotfixed by dialogue that seemed to have been added in last minute just to make her look good. The mod just pops up from nowhere JUST so Rey can solve it. We need more set-up if the center of the conflict is going to be a technical issue like this. Even Star Trek usually tries to give us a silly techno-babble style explanation when this happens.
Exactly. I feel marry sue is often used as a binary when i feel it's more like a spectrum or threshold. She might not be one if she only meets 2 of the 5 requirements, but im tired of seeing any of the 5 that I instantly suspect it anyway.
Besides from horrific character design of Deathstroke and Myx(what his name) and mildly annoyment of pandering race swap. It's a somewhat decent show to watch because of the plot, if you got through the characters design.

There are many costumes from comics that are terrible, and they are improved on by shows or films (Aquaman for ex.) 2. This show invents a new mythology for Superman with powers of villains coming from Kryptonian tech, so it makes sense in this universe they will look different, and definitely not comic accurate.

Lois Lane is a character built entirely to fulfill a role. She was designed to be a damsel in distress. What kind of person gets herself in mortal danger every week and is a target for several supervillains? A brave, ambitious, never-quiting-on-a-story journalist. A woman who sees danger and runs towards it. Who actively searches for the worst people hiding the most disturbing secrets. It would be weird for every Alien, robot or bald billionaire in the huge city of metropolis to kidnap the same woman every time, if she was just a shy and reserved baker.
I'm glad you're enjoying the show and I hope you, as well as everyone else, continue to enjoy it. The show doesn't seem super bad, but there are things within it that prevent me personally from investing into it. I don't particularly like the design of Superman's suit or the race swaps, however I believe those changes were made for copyright purposes. I think it's why even Mr. Myx has such a foreign and unrecgnizable new design. Then there's the other characters who were also changed for the worse. DC must still be wrestling for ownership of them in court or something. I also don't like how socially timid this Clark is. I don't expect him to be some scowling super serious man, but he's far too boyish for my liking. His voice especially reflects that. I just can't see Superman having a voice like THAT. His personality is more fitting for Supergirl, in my opinion.

Mr. Mxy is meant to be a nod to the show's anime influences. Supreme Kai inspired. While the rest of the villains are doing the Spider-Man PS4/Ultimate Spider-Man path of making those villains tech based to facilitate the theme of Krypton technology being moved around in Earth. Other DC movies are able to use the designs, the tech based designs even if boring looking are a choice
@@heroicgangster9981 The characters were changed to avoid paying the people who made them. Those designs are far too unrecognizable and ugly, which is intentional. The less familiar they look, the more likely it is DC can avoid paying royalties.

Without even watching first, I'm going to state that Lois is not a Mary Sue character despite the poor narrative choices her writers have made for her. While she does have a strong start, it's shown that she doesn't get everything she wants all the time, and she has been shown to be self-reflective and even admit wrong doing on occasion. This is why her infamous "If you don't tell me I'll jump" moment hit so damn hard - up to that point, she'd been a fantastic female lead and a great rival and love interest for Clark, with great long-term potential for the two to balance each other's flaws naturally. I was angry *because* I cared up to that point and the writers made her do that stupid BS for seemingly no reason other then to have a "men bad, girl power!" moment. If she were a Mary Sue, I'd have just rolled my eyes and muttered "*of course* this is how it goes" while stifling a yawn and not caring at all (if I'd even gotten to that episode in the first place).

Amber knows she was unfair to Mark. You can see that as she looks at the Mars rock. But she broke up with him weeks back so she's not going to stay with him. And Eve is endgame obviously. Mark was never smart so he falls behind way more than Clark ever did. Marks a normal teenager trying to do the double life thing... Which he sucks at.
This show could be considered the most fitting current example of "Look for problems and you will find them." Lois seems to check off every single box for a Mary Sue character on the surface, but with the story told well, she isn't. She's a good character a lot of people enjoy watching because she's someone with a flaw that she needs to overcome to reach her goal, she's an ambitious teen not yet experienced in being a reporter. The flaw is simple and can be overcome naturally with time in the field.

I'm someone in the "other" category who is a bit sensitive about people trying to start something because of the era of "Trump vs". But for one, I don't see literature devil as a political figure for the right in his videos because all his content is focused on how terribly writers in general have become do to the media that's become owned by the left. They own the schools and own the movie industries, making most of the narrative villainizing the "other side" when every problem being created today is in politicians as a whole. To be fair regarding Rey fixing the Falcon: it would make some sense if the junk dealer that had the Falcon routinely put some sort of gadget in the ships he was selling to prevent them from being stolen before they could be sold, in a similar way to the way some shops now have security devices on their wares. Rey would have reason to know about that: she’s been planning to steal a ship and run away for a while and could have learned about it, while Han has only just arrived and doesn’t have reason to know about the security device. That being said, that is not the explanation they gave us and it would have been easy to have Rey yank out the part and say “He puts these in all his ships, prevents them from going into hyper-drive” or something and JJ didn’t do that. The only thing Mary Sue-ish about Lois is she still has a job after blowing off her boss’s calls like that.
I've been thinking about the title since the show began, and I actually think that you're wrong. I get your logic, but I don't believe that this is Lois's show. I believe it's Clark's. 'My (Clark's) adventures with Superman.' My main evidence of this is because of the discussion Clark has with Martha in episode two, where he says 'I want to know more about him too.' Clark treats Superman as a separate person at times. Which is accurate to the comics, where he says that Clark is who he really is, Superman just helps out from time to time.
Fair enough. It's a sad state of affairs when getting SOME of the basics right is enough for a BARELY passing grade. I'm not going to watch this show anyway but my current bet is that all of the accepted mary sue tropes will become more obvious IF it gets more seasons. If that doesn't prove to be the case... Great, but I'm still not the audience for this show. That would be the tumblr crowd and they can have it.
Another thing they could have done to establish Rey's force powers, is to have her use them while she struggles to make ends meet. She has been alone on a desolate planet doing dangerous things. The writers could even use the troupe of her Struggle being a con as she's been using her force powers to get better prices or get to places in the ships she scavenges for better components. Then when Fin gets to Jakku, he sees her use those powers he causes an incident that leads to her being found out as a force user and that pulls her into the main story. That flimsy bit of writing could have at least justified her having powers at a baseline.

You almost good me to reconsider this show (almost) well done with this video. While it could have been easy to dunk on this show I can respect the honesty and also reiterating the traits of a mary-sue character, excellent video.
I think being competitive is one of the most basic and important traits of a tomboy. And since tomboys tend to be passionate and therefor competent at what they like to do, being competitive on a self destructive level is the most obvious flaw of the character archetype. It seems like they managed to write her quite well.

I think there is a bit more here that leans her into being a Mary Sue. Specifically because of what they do to Clark in the story. Because in this case, it's an instance of Mary Sue that's not OP for the sake of being OP but one out of convenience. Consistent magical off switches and what not. But I stand in belief that this story feels like it was written by teenagers. And a I don't like Lois as a character. She doesn't feel padded out and feels like she gets by out of convenience of the story rather than feeling like things line up.
To be fair to Rey she is related to Palpatine. He is one of the strongest force users in Star Wars so her quickly picking up on the force without much training is justified somewhat.

The "original character. Do not steal" caption next to Rey had me dying with laughter. Overall, a good breakdown of both Mary Sues and of the Lois from this new Superman show. I had issues with some of the weirder stuff in the show like the magical girl transformation and the atypical S-shield on Superman's chest. But I found the show to be good enough to watch and enjoy.
There's been a few atypical "S" emblems in animation. I remember some real basic ones in the Justice League cartoon (usually with future depictions of Superman). I always believe its an animation shorthand type deal. Basically, its simplified so its easier to draw and keep consistent. Considering how choppy the animation gets, I bet this is the best they can do. As for stuff like the transformation and other weird reaction stuff, its annoying because its the team trying to make the series appear more like an anime, yet failing to even know what anime looks like stylistically. They basically just know Sailor Moon and think all anime is like that. So they think ALL transformations look like that in anime, even if some do to some extent its still not blatantly Sailor Moon like that one was. Its just another case of people trying to ape the success of Anime because American entertainment is failing. Luckily the series is still pretty good otherwise, but it still feels try-hard.

Turning the Millennium Falcon into a literal Ship of Theseus is such a good idea. Heck, maybe this whole time, Han Solo COULD have solved the issue, but refused to take out the part that caused the problem because it was the last remnant of what the Millennium Falcon used to be, the last part of his old friend.
A fun way to do it would be that Rey could fix the Falcon due to her knowledge of the new parts, but Han would be against it because it would reveal their location or something along those lines. Both Rey and Han would be portrayed as competent while even presenting a small conflict between them.
I'm glad this show doesn't utterly suck, but it's also a little sad that we are in a position where we must applaud a show just for passing basic creative writing 101. Still, it's a positive step in the right direction and, at the very least, an example to learn from.

She's actually wearing a jeogori, which is the separate top part of the hanbok over her sleeveless top.
The formal wear is also meant to be modernized rather than traditional and reflects her own sense of style.
The studio behind the series is also Korean and so were the art directors who approved the design as well as the design references.
Saying that the design is just "supposedly Korean" is like saying that wa lolita is "supposedly Japanese", when it in fact just an alternative style of Japanese clothing.
I'm not trying to be mean or anything, but I personally find it irksome when modern styles from other cultures end up under the radar.
One thing I've noticed is some people comparing a certain scene to Amber from the Invincible show, but the difference between the two is rather obvious and large. With Amber, she's portrayed by 100% in the right, and never really apologized. Lois, its shown as one of her character flaws and she does feel bad and apologize. Clark even fires back at her, showing she's not the one in the right. It's annoying when people feel like they're entitled to personal secrets, but I can also understand not liking being lied to. Overall this Lois is less a Mary Sue type character than Amber was in the Invincible show. Not in the overpowered way, but she was portrayed as way too perfect.
There's also the fact that Lois isn't a star reporter at the start of the series, she's an intern acting like she's a star reporter, so I have no idea what that description they did was about. Probably just them embellishing

Its not that he doesn't care, but rather he cares enough to let Clark tell him on his own terms. But I also like the potential implication that him knowing is why he is so into conspiracies and theories, because he already is friends with a superhuman, so maybe Atlantis really does exist.
My problem with her is she never apologized for forcing clark to tell her his secret, unless she actually apologized, or just didn't act like she was entitled to know his secret identity. I feel like they could've had a fun and cute dynamic with her knowing he's clark but him not knowing she knows. Either way she should've been the one to apologize and not clark.
Yeah, it's because of that scene alone is what got everyone to see her as a Mary Sue because the show paints her that she's justified in getting angry at Clark for keeping his identity as Superman a secret and acting defensive saying that she would never reveal his secret to the public... This is a lie since she did say that she would reveal Superman's identity to the public and her reason that she hates people lying because of her past is also a hypocritical thing of hers because she does lie.

Also she wouldn't have revealed Clark's secret as superman since she said she'd reveal superman identity BEFORE she found out he was clark. Before that she just thought he was a random person, when she finds out he was clark, someone close to her, she wouldn't have revealed it. This is evident by the fact SHE DIDN'T REVEAL HIS IDENTITY AFTER KNWOING HIS SECRET FOR MORE THAN HALF THE SEASON
I like that Clark hits back at Lois, but the show takes Lois's side. While this iteration of Superman is a breath of fresh air after Homelander... Omni-Man... etc, and seems set to have a clash between a good and evil Superman... The show is called 'My Adventures with...'
Immediately, Superman is not the lead in his own show even in the title requiring one to ask, whose adventures are we watching if not Supermans?
What I will say is that MAWS does a better job of hiding it's progressivism by actually having people on board who won't let the writers hate on Superman. He is the star. He sells comics. He must be protected from the likes of She-Hulk writers. MAWS writers are toeing 'a' line... but when you look at the unnecessary filler that is relationship issues that aren't Lois and Clark... Then you know it's been heavily coded to throw that elephant in the room that can't stop playing it's own trumpet instead of letting the main star and lead character play his. Because lets be honest... Superman doesn't need Lois Lane to pull a crowd. But without Superman, Lois is a heartbeat away from being in the newspapers obituary page.

Sounds more like Superman plays the distraction for Lois. He's highly visible on any battlefield, and durable, mobile, and strong enough that even if he isn't the one directly providing the win condition, he demands attention, or he'll use that free time to break the villain's stuff unopposed. Lois is the one that provides the win condition in each of those fights, but she's otherwise a squishy normie that relies on Superman taking attention away from her.
Not to mention Louis color scheme makes her blend into the surrounding more often then not, filling the support role while Clark is the tank.
The show is a nice piece of entertainment. A story self aware that the comics themselves have explored many different universes were variants of superman change with each of them. Now we have this version, that stands different frmo the comics but it s well writen enough to get a good grade on my scaling. Even though the sticky trends of current writing like ginger genocidea and blocky females are present, the show still delivers a good story instead of telling the story that we have heard a milion times already. I will try the show in max to support it. as i should.

The idea that Rey fixing the Falcon could have been better excused by having get know about the modifications made to it in the last ten years, while he only knows how it was when he had it... genius, minimalist, and with so much room for two-way character-building.
They could have had a montage of him going around and fixing all the mods while she held wrenches or did the skinny work while he kept calling her "Kid." Between the two of them (with Fin getting the gun turrets unjammed and up to combat level), the Falcon gets up to Han's specs, and he sits down in the pilot's chair, closes his eyes, flips a switch... and something sparks or goes down in the background. Han sighs contentedly. "Perfect."
Rey looks at what sparked. "Is it supposed to do that?" Han grins. "Perfection ain't always pretty. But it does what it has to." He pats the front panel fondly (something rattles, and he slaps it until the rattle stops) and the movie goes on.
Ah, that movie. Such a waste, all to feed one woman's ego.

I hope you can also talk about the League of Lois Lanes episode later because I feel that Lois's character gets tested in this one. Will our favorite tomboy's morals stand against the pressure of seeing a bunch of Loises(?) each with their dreams manifested in record time? I would like to know.
The reason for that episode is to introduce kryptonite and Mr. Myxzptlk. Without the kryptonite, the events in episode 10 never would have happened, and Zod and Brainiac never would have found Earth. Introducing Mr. Myxzplk is smart, because if the writers write themselves into a corner, he can bring chaos.
The League of Lanes isn't that important to the plot.. However, it amplifies the positive characteristic of the main Lois Lane by showing how different she is from the others. Unlike the other Lanes, she trusts her Superman, and she knows that just looking like someone evil doesn't make you evil.
Any Superman fan knows Clark stops being the Superman when he doesn't have Lois. The League of Lanes don't trust anyone but themselves. This is why their Supermen turn bad. Put the guns down and talk. Hate breeds hate, after all.
That was a quite elaborate and long-winded way to explain that Lois are our eyes into the world of Superman.
She is the main character because we see the world from her perspective, and she mainly watches Superman.
I can't even judge the character of Lois properly yet. I'm still riding the high of her actually HAVING a character. Baby steps.

I liked the show before that moment, but that moment cemented it for me and turned me from mildly enjoying it to being a fan.
I think a lot of people are pointing out that Lois Lane from this series seems more like Luz Lane from the Owl House and thus does not feel like Lois Lane to them.

Goes back to the biggest tell tale sign a Mary Sue exists in a story when other characters around him or her go underdeveloped. Even Jimmy gets his moments. But the fact that both her and Clark are so well developed characters and even better they actually have an episode where they do fight against a bunch of Mary Sue Lois's really was the mid season victory lap that the writers knew they had a solid character with Lois.

But the show doesn't acknowledge this & has Peter apologise for being a bad friend

This is really well done! Would you be willing to do a video on multi-class characters? How to balance characters with a variety of skills?
There is a great scene in the show where Clark and Lois get ambushed by a machinegun turret and Clark steps in between to take the fire. Lois then asks him how he knew that he is bulletproof. He just answers "I didn't. I just knew you aren't." This scene shows greatly that superman is still superman in this show and how great their relationship is because Lois was genuinely concerned then.
19:48 The most frustrating about that scene is how you can even see how it could happen too. It's just standard bureaucracy.
It's nice to see the characters are better written than so many...and the tomboy is allowed to be a straight girl (a dying concept in modern American media stereotyping used for lazy representation), but I still can't get myself to watch the show. I'm old. I've lived with numerous takes on Superman and the DC universe and this show is basically Superman dropped into some knockoff anime. It suffers the same issues that chased me off Lois & Clark and Smallville a few seasons into each show, and even Superman & Lois after the first episode. It doesn't feel like Superman.
It's not just the race swapped Lois, Jimmy, and Perry and the gender-swapped Ron Troupe. None of the DC character outside of Clark and his parents resemble the core of the characters they take their names from. The Clark/Lois relationship is fast tracked because they want to get to the romance or still think "Clark" is just a pair of glasses and not something that he worked hard to come up with and maintain. Jimmy shouldn't know Superman's secret identity but the show makes it impossible not to. DEATHSTROKE SHOULD NOT BE A PRETTY BOY! I just don't feel like I'm watching a Superman show except for when he's with his parents. I'll even defend the so-called "magical girl transformation" since it's just Clark getting his costume once followed by Ma reworking it into the classic look because it's never used again.
I want to love this show because it sounds really good and I don't hate the art style, but I'm too attached to a proper version of Superman, with the necessary changes between media that I don't see with this show.
You know what did the whole thing of Lois knowing Clark was Supes, but he still denied it, billions of times better than this? Superman Doomsday. She actually acts like a reporter, and a human who can understand why he needs that secret, especially as it becomes a major part of the plot.
The reason this is the only version of Lois I can stand is because she’s justly called out on her crappy behavior. It’s not just swept under the rug.

I tried to watch the first episode. All it did was make me want to rewatch Superman : the Animated series.
The issue with this is that Lois Lane is being written as a hero when technically she isn't meant to be. She's only meant to be a very hard working, some day wife to a hero, side character at all costs. And to prove this, they had to do the one thing to Superman that otherwise wouldn't allow her to take part during the conflict because of cross fire. That one thing is to make him absolutely easy to kill through very ordinary means. How am I the viewer supposed to look at superman as a man from another planet given other worldly innate abilities to rival other gods if he can die through any other simple means. Now nothing about Superman makes him special enough to earn the title, "man of steel". Heck, at that point he would easily lose to Lex Luthor because not only is Lex using kryptonite but he's also using a machine powered by that stuff. How could you expect Lex Luthor- a very smart and powerful man, much less an entire government all of a suddenly find Superman a serious threat at that point? He seems very killable now, nothing to rationally fear at all.

If for most of your life, your dinner has depended on whether the parts you scavenge are worth anything, you could arguably tell the difference between "looks broken" and "doesn't look broken", especially guided by the force.
The whole "bypassed the compressor" level of starship engineering?... not so much.
They may have watered down Lois Lane's Mary Sueishness to a level that is palatable to even hardcore anti feminist types, but you know for a fact that they biting down leather demonstrating their highest level of restraint getting just this far. They didn't want to but they knew they had to. For one, they needed the show to sell. And two, they still have a message they want to push and normalize but realized that people don't want their suppository horse sized pill that their brand of feminism is known for. Great job, Literary Devil, on your thorough analysis of Lois Lane and this show. She certainly isn't a Mary Sue. She is dangerously close but she isn't. But that doesn't stop her from being an insufferable, annoying twat waffle that the show so desperately wants to validate.
There is one thing that does bug me though. The original Lois Lane was introduced and played as a no-nonsense, by the book, street smart, gal who could walk the line in the highest echelons of her field. Someone admirable, competent and to say the least, desirable. But she was always just a love interest, key-word "interest", and not a forgone conclusion that Clark falls madly in love with. Lois Lane had too much self respect to let herself be pulled in by Superman's charms no matter how many times he saved her without at least Supes working for it with a little back and forth, nor did Superman have any less self respect with out the same input. The part where Clark falls madly in love with an otherwise uninterest Lois in this series is unbelievably Mary-Sue-ish. It reeks of it even if the package isn't complete. No one with an iota of self respect would put up with her nettling, self-centered childish personality.
Also, the fact that Clark hadn't explored his powers up until he graduated highschool and became and intern and is now discovering his abilities just when Lois Lane is there to help him pick up the pieces and solve his problems for him is also unbelievable. Though she struggles the outside context of the world falling in place for her to solve the world's problems by conveniently being right where a button needs to be pressed is making this Mary Sue levels of story telling. Don't get me wrong, sometimes things can be solved by the right person pressing the right button at the right time, but not this often by the same person.
I keep wanting to give this version leeway, until I remember that she jumps off a building to force a Superman explanation to give her reputation.
I think Snider's take wasn't in itself wrong as a general notion, just that he took it way too extreme. We need plenty of both pure good and jaded heroes, if we're spoiled for content, we can't complain. :D
I've never been a major Superman reader, but to my understanding, most versions of the Lois and Clark pairing start the whole story with fully adult Clark who's already figured out a majority of his powers first come to the Daily Planet and basically meet-cute fully adult Lois who's already put in the work and become an ace reporter. Many versions of Lois, including this animated one apparently, have her as an army brat who has some amount of training from her military general dad, among other skills in her background that can theoretically be called up by competent writers to make her look like a credible, legitimate help to Superman beyond being a simple damsel-in-distress. However, if the kind of superpowered threats that are being written in early episodes of this series (the Parasite tech kinda worked better here than the 90s animated series) are any indication, character-wise she would likely be better off if the writers were writing her to ultimately mellow out, be less impulsive over the course of the season or series so that she wouldn't put herself in as many dangerous situations, possibly by learning a lesson or something, maybe eventually realizing that there will be danger and while Clark is physically capable of handling most of it she isn't and (if they ever get to a Doomsday episode) that Clark might not always be there to save her.

Is it possible for a character to have latent potential without being a mary sue? Like they can do some amazing things naturally that side characters/rivals can't, like they created a never before seen skill or be gifted, but still suck at others? Say they have mentor of sorts that introduces them to their powers, and the main is established as far beyond them in certain aspects, to the point they note it, but the mentor excels in other aspects. Also, if character established as having giftedness loses to more experienced characters/those characters have access to skills/abilities/equipment they don't, does this downplay a character being a sue, or at least they have sui-ish aspects, but not enough to be a sue.
Yes. Cause if that wasn't the case, then just being a main character with any kind of talent... AT ALL, would make that character a Mary Sue. Like, most main characters have things they excel at, that others don't.
Just to name a few examples: Batman, Spider-Man, Luke Skywalker, Harry Potter, Anakin Skywalker, Sonic The Hedgehog, Rainbow Dash, SpongeBob SquarePants, Aang, Goku, and Iron Man all have some innate talent that makes them explicitly better than the people around them at certain things.
Imo, if the character has things they suck at and their lack of experience makes their skill unrefined, they’re not a mary sue. It’s not the talent that makes a mary sue; it’s the way the world bends to the will of a character in ways that the world establishes it shouldn’t. There’s no explanation as to why the character is conveniently likeable to everyone the plot needs them to be, competent in fields they realistically shouldn’t be, and lacks real character flaws in addition to their talent. The talent shouldn’t be able to get them out of any rut, and it’s usually good to give it a drawback so the character has to be careful with how they use it. The character should still have problems and flaws that put them at fault by their own volition.
You see the situation you mentioned in shounen a lot: the hero is young but shows signs that one day, their skill will surpass even the greatest if it’s refined. They often have a skill or power other characters cannot access, but they still have to put in the work to use it to its full potential. They also can’t automatically solve any problem with their power or knowledge they just happen to have. Their friends will excel in things the hero doesn’t and will have to be relied on sometimes.
In short, yes.
@@rcdakara Say in an episode, they character's lack of action at a hunch results in their town being severely wrecked. Like they kinda notice a mcguffin from the corner of their eye, but brush it off as just their imagination. But then the mcguffin goes off and they feel guilty for not acting on their gut. This spurs them to give it their all to prevent another tragedy like that again? But later on, in the series or another season, it's revealed that this attitude almost kills them through overexertion and not taking the time to rest. In that season, they are trying to teach new characters that lesson they learned. I've heard some use this 'their flaw is they care to much or want to help others' as a major sue moment at times as it become their defining trait.
@@GenesicKaiser That works because the character is acting from a place of wanting to never make a mistake they made again. They care “too much” because not caring enough in the past caused a ton of damage that they had enough agency to prevent. The new state of mind logically follows from previous events and even becomes a detriment to the character’s health. It doesn’t sound like the plot will always reward this trait.
I believe the ‘caring too much’ argument is usually made when the character is altruistic just for the sake of being so. Even then, I think characters like that can work if the world sufficiently challenges that notion, especially if it’s to the point of making them question if being that way is actually a good thing.
@@rcdakara In terms of accountability, what differentiates a character being somewhat pardoned from a reckless action because of the results,, but they are still heavily criticized for it, and reminded that such actions would not be tolerated again. Would a mary sue just be forgiven because 'reasons' or, the person who should reasonably give them crap about it, both because of higher position responsibilities and basic maturity just is randomly cool with it?
I like Lois Lane's character in this show. Sure, she can be loud, obnoxious, annoying, and overbearing at times, but she can also be kind, considerate, attentive, and brave even when she's put into situations that would make anyone seem powerless or useless. If you don't like her though, that's fair, she might not be for everyone.

He's not an engineer. The Millennium Falcon is old. That's why it keeps breaking down. They state this in the original trilogy. It's junk. Han is used to fixing it when it shuts down, obviously he has experience keeping it running, and he's been keeping it running for years. He might not be an engineer, but he does know how to fix the Falcon.

My problem with my adventures with Superman is with how they treat heroic masculinity within the character, if you look at the 90s Superman TAS, it’s clear that this Superman has grappled with his shadow, he knows the darkness within himself, within humanity, he is in no way naive, but he fights on anyway for the greater good.
I feel like both this and synders take are both very interesting first steps for Superman from opposite sides of the balance, one grappling even sometimes loosing to his shadow trying to find the light in a dark world, the other lacks a shadow entirely, he is naive, thinking every problem can be solved with diplomacy because he never had to face true danger because of his powers and environment.
Both need to mature to become a true balanced pillar of hope, a hero, a Superman,
(And nether of which I expect to undergo that change on screen any time soon because character development is scary for exects)
To me, the best description of a Mary Sue is, a character that the story is in service to, rather than the other way around. When story logic bends to accommodate that character, it's a Mary Sue. That does not automatically mean that any exceptional character is a Mary Sue - most protagonists are exceptional in some way - but when the story treats a character by different rules, that means a Mary Sue is afoot.
Superman could almost be considered a Mary Sue by that description - a guy from another planet, SERIOUSLY? - except that his uniqueness is one of the central precepts of the story. The story logic is built with that in mind. It's not just a thing that cropped up to explain why beloved character doesn't have to worry about being shot while he or she is getting sassy with gangsters.
Usually a Mary Sue is going to be treated better by the story than other characters would, but sometimes they're treated worse, either because the writer is into wringing suffering out of characters, or they want to make the character's ultimate triumph extra triumphant.

Yes, I mean actually seen. From establishing she works for him, character interaction, everything. That way it's well established and not hotfixed by dialogue that seemed to have been added in last minute just to make her look good. The mod just pops up from nowhere JUST so Rey can solve it.
We need more set-up if the center of the conflict is going to be a technical issue like this. Even Star Trek usually tries to give us a silly techno-babble style explanation when this happens.

@@ellugerdelacruz2555 Not a good idea to use "comic accurate" as the metric for if a design is good or not. It's not appropriate, and no one uses that standard consistently.
1. There are many costumes from comics that are terrible, and they are improved on by shows or films (Aquaman for ex.)
2. This show invents a new mythology for Superman with powers of villains coming from Kryptonian tech, so it makes sense in this universe they will look different, and definitely not comic accurate.
Mr. Mxyzptlk will not stand for such slander, he spent a really long time making that elf body and he won't have it insulted by some three dimensional human.
Lois Lane is a character built entirely to fulfill a role. She was designed to be a damsel in distress.
What kind of person gets herself in mortal danger every week and is a target for several supervillains?
A brave, ambitious, never-quiting-on-a-story journalist. A woman who sees danger and runs towards it. Who actively searches for the worst people hiding the most disturbing secrets.
It would be weird for every Alien, robot or bald billionaire in the huge city of metropolis to kidnap the same woman every time, if she was just a shy and reserved baker.

The show doesn't seem super bad, but there are things within it that prevent me personally from investing into it. I don't particularly like the design of Superman's suit or the race swaps, however I believe those changes were made for copyright purposes. I think it's why even Mr. Myx has such a foreign and unrecgnizable new design. Then there's the other characters who were also changed for the worse.
DC must still be wrestling for ownership of them in court or something.
I also don't like how socially timid this Clark is. I don't expect him to be some scowling super serious man, but he's far too boyish for my liking. His voice especially reflects that. I just can't see Superman having a voice like THAT. His personality is more fitting for Supergirl, in my opinion.

Mr. Mxy is meant to be a nod to the show's anime influences. Supreme Kai inspired. While the rest of the villains are doing the Spider-Man PS4/Ultimate Spider-Man path of making those villains tech based to facilitate the theme of Krypton technology being moved around in Earth. Other DC movies are able to use the designs, the tech based designs even if boring looking are a choice
@@heroicgangster9981 The characters were changed to avoid paying the people who made them. Those designs are far too unrecognizable and ugly, which is intentional. The less familiar they look, the more likely it is DC can avoid paying royalties.

I’m an idiot. I thought she was a Mary Sue just because they weren’t focusing more on superman. I really should have know that just from the title, “My Adventures with Superman.”
Without even watching first, I'm going to state that Lois is not a Mary Sue character despite the poor narrative choices her writers have made for her. While she does have a strong start, it's shown that she doesn't get everything she wants all the time, and she has been shown to be self-reflective and even admit wrong doing on occasion.
This is why her infamous "If you don't tell me I'll jump" moment hit so damn hard - up to that point, she'd been a fantastic female lead and a great rival and love interest for Clark, with great long-term potential for the two to balance each other's flaws naturally. I was angry *because* I cared up to that point and the writers made her do that stupid BS for seemingly no reason other then to have a "men bad, girl power!" moment. If she were a Mary Sue, I'd have just rolled my eyes and muttered "*of course* this is how it goes" while stifling a yawn and not caring at all (if I'd even gotten to that episode in the first place).

Amber knows she was unfair to Mark. You can see that as she looks at the Mars rock. But she broke up with him weeks back so she's not going to stay with him. And Eve is endgame obviously. This show could be considered the most fitting current example of "Look for problems and you will find them."
Lois seems to check off every single box for a Mary Sue character on the surface, but with the story told well, she isn't. She's a good character a lot of people enjoy watching because she's someone with a flaw that she needs to overcome to reach her goal, she's an ambitious teen not yet experienced in being a reporter. The flaw is simple and can be overcome naturally with time in the field.

But for one, I don't see literature devil as a political figure for the right in his videos because all his content is focused on how terribly writers in general have become do to the media that's become owned by the left. They own the schools and own the movie industries, making most of the narrative villainizing the "other side" when every problem being created today is in politicians as a whole.
"Never go political" was a saying back when I was a child and 2014 to today showed me why. All politicians are of the same environment aiming for the same power, it doesn't matter how they get that power, even if they have to start a second civil war to do it.

Its good to see a female character actually suffer consequences and take accountability for their actions. That's pretty rare in modern media.
To be fair regarding Rey fixing the Falcon: it would make some sense if the junk dealer that had the Falcon routinely put some sort of gadget in the ships he was selling to prevent them from being stolen before they could be sold, in a similar way to the way some shops now have security devices on their wares. Rey would have reason to know about that: she’s been planning to steal a ship and run away for a while and could have learned about it, while Han has only just arrived and doesn’t have reason to know about the security device. That being said, that is not the explanation they gave us and it would have been easy to have Rey yank out the part and say “He puts these in all his ships, prevents them from going into hyper-drive” or something and JJ didn’t do that.
The only thing Mary Sue-ish about Lois is she still has a job after blowing off her boss’s calls like that.

I've been thinking about the title since the show began, and I actually think that you're wrong. I get your logic, but I don't believe that this is Lois's show.
I believe it's Clark's. 'My (Clark's) adventures with Superman.'
My main evidence of this is because of the discussion Clark has with Martha in episode two, where he says 'I want to know more about him too.'
Clark treats Superman as a separate person at times. Which is accurate to the comics, where he says that Clark is who he really is, Superman just helps out from time to time.
Fair enough.
It's a sad state of affairs when getting SOME of the basics right is enough for a BARELY passing grade.
I'm not going to watch this show anyway but my current bet is that all of the accepted mary sue tropes will become more obvious IF it gets more seasons.

Another thing they could have done to establish Rey's force powers, is to have her use them while she struggles to make ends meet. She has been alone on a desolate planet doing dangerous things. The writers could even use the troupe of her Struggle being a con as she's been using her force powers to get better prices or get to places in the ships she scavenges for better components. Then when Fin gets to Jakku, he sees her use those powers he causes an incident that leads to her being found out as a force user and that pulls her into the main story. That flimsy bit of writing could have at least justified her having powers at a baseline.
This is like hollywood just taking a step out of the the woke agenda of the 2020 era of writing. This is hopefully a start of a good trend!
Food for thought- the title of the series could apply to Clark as much as Lois. After all, Clark is having adventures with his alter ego, Superman.
I was fully onboard with you until you said Ted Mosby is the main character of How I met your mother, silly Devil, a conosiour of literature so prolific as you should find it obvious that the main character is Barney Stinson and Ted is just his best friend and narrator
You almost good me to reconsider this show (almost) well done with this video. While it could have been easy to dunk on this show I can respect the honesty and also reiterating the traits of a mary-sue character, excellent video.
I think being competitive is one of the most basic and important traits of a tomboy. And since tomboys tend to be passionate and therefor competent at what they like to do, being competitive on a self destructive level is the most obvious flaw of the character archetype.
It seems like they managed to write her quite well.

I think there is a bit more here that leans her into being a Mary Sue. Specifically because of what they do to Clark in the story. Because in this case, it's an instance of Mary Sue that's not OP for the sake of being OP but one out of convenience. Consistent magical off switches and what not. But I stand in belief that this story feels like it was written by teenagers. And a I don't like Lois as a character. She doesn't feel padded out and feels like she gets by out of convenience of the story rather than feeling like things line up.
