there's a saying in barbershop when you talk about music theory rules being broken. "Well it's barbershop"
The funny thing about that is that barbershop has an incredible amount of rules but they're just totally different rules that make a totally different sound from traditional classical music theory
When it comes to Barbershop quartet writing, expect to throw conventional part writing out of the window ALOT lol

technically only 3 octaves, Lead and Bari are unison

@@Bowling_Dude I should point out that 3rd-5th all get you a bronze medal at international, so cracking 3rd doesn't change much, other than they'd likely be scoring >90% to do that, which I see as their next goal

That's why "stone" is specified in the word. Its like saying "flying boat" to describe a plane.
