Very helpful video for those not familiar with how breadcrum navigation works, it works well on that 265! It's pretty much the same as on my 745 and I've used it quite a bit for finding my way running, on the MTB and road bike. I agree it's sufficient for most people in most cases, the only times I've found myself struggling a bit is when on the road bike (so going faster) on more complicated crossroads, there I miss the full map sometimes. But for running or on the MTB/road bike in the countryside I find this totally sufficient!
Not a bad little feature is it! Some great bargains on the 745 these days too if people aren’t sound on AMOLED 🙈 yeah that’s a good point, moving faster on a bicycle does bring out the weaknesses in breadcrumb trail! Thanks again for the support and lovely comments Jasper!

FYI you can upload all hiking maps via garmin and follow the trail on all day hike works great even if you go off route you can use it to return back. This has been around for ling time.

The 965 is genuinely one of the best watches on the market. If you are happy with the price tag it will be a purchase you won’t regret 🌟 The mapping on it is soooo impressive, it’s comfortable, it’s stylish, battery life is okay, screen is beautiful. Only recommendation is to put a screen protector on it pretty pronto! Good luck 😉

While I'm not denying Amoled may be perfectly good enough for many people (especially those with good eyesight), the idea that is as readable as classic MIP displays outdoors/daylight is delusional. When you factor in the ridiculous hand gestures to keep the screen on during an activity and the huge impact to battery life, Amoled is a solution looking for a problem. Gotta follow that Apple I guess. It's win/win for Garmin: higher prices and watches that will need replacements sooner because they won't get the job done eventually because of natural battery degradation.
Hahaha, I agree mate. I feel like the only person on RUclips who's saying MIP screens do seem better out in daylight?! In fact in 90% of scenarios i'd rather have a MIP on my wrist is visibility is the goal. Absolutely delusional ;) BUT I must admit though AMOLED has held its own in the gym and outdoors after sunset. With my wrist at angles and with indoor lighting the amoled screen is super enjoyable to use.. even in the gym mirror like 5 meters away I was able to read my heart rate in the 265s reflections. Yeah, battery life does seem to be a problem. I'm not getting any where near Garmin's or other tech reviewers claims. I do train a lot but >5 days starts to fall into Apple Watch territory 🤣 Another great point about batter degradation. If companies do care about the environment that is another win for MIP. @@ActiveIdeas Yes, there will be scenarios where Amoled will shine (no pun intended). I'm not against Amoled as a tech, just doubtful that it's the right tech for this particular job when all things are considered. Closest analogy I can find is the kindle. Those e-ink displays are far from impressive-looking and they don't allow for fancy graphs or animations but they're extremely good for the intended purpose, with incredible battery life. I mean, by construction MIP screens get more legible the brighter it is and the opposite holds for AMOLED, we all know that. But looking at videos at runtesters where the guy wears glasses and says there was no visiiblity problem at all under Portugal sunlight and not sure what to believe. Somehow I don't think that they will let me take the watch out in the sun to test it at the local shop, so where does that leave me... Btw, did you have the brightness on auto, or high, or something else here, do you remember?
Greetings mate, this is some excellent content for us without built-in maps watches. Question, is the Garmin breadcrump navingation enough/better than downloading and using an IQ connect application, like dwMap, wikiloc, etc? Have you done a comparison? I am interested at hiking and not running so much, also I am using a forerunner 165.
It totally depends on what you’re doing. For hiking in remote areas (what I used this for) phone signal can be terrible or completely missing. I’m pretty sure you need a stable connection & cell signal for DwMap, wikiloc etc to work! I would say.. yes, the breadcrumb navigation by Garmin is enough to go hiking with. As I said in this video.. I used it to safely navigate through the 26 miles of the Yorkshire three peaks Hope this helped ❤️
@panos9186 you’ll be fine mate ❤️ As long as you download a reliable GPX map/route you’ll have a fantastic navigation experience. Remember as well you’ll get back to start features and the ability to navigate towards a saved location (you could save the location of your car, tent, pub etc lol) so lots of fun to be had even though this is a cheaper Garmin model 🙏🏽👊🏽

Cheers mate! You unfortunately can't get topographical maps o the forerunner 265.. if this is essential then I highly recommend getting the 965.. such a stunning watch! The 500ft referred to the distance.. on the breadcrumb trail you're getting a "birds-eye-view" from point A to point B of your course. This 500ft means you are looking down at the route from 500ft.. you can choose to zoom in to increase the detail of the breadcrumbs trail or you can zoom out to getting a better overview. Hope that means sense bud, all the best! 🔥🌟
Could you check if lactate treshold autodetection is working on 265? No the lt test, but autodetection during activity. It's huge problem on x95 series.
Mine appears to have auto detection lactate threshold. Although for this I think you need to give an all out effort during outside running for at least 15-30 minutes whilst wearing a HR strap. All the best mate 🌟
Honestly I don't understand why they don't have the actual map shown on the display, if this had map on it It's such an easy purchase. Following a breadcrumb seems absurd while I am trying to focus on running.

Following a breadcrumb is easy and 99% of the time I’m doing that on a map anyway.. where having a map helps is when you get to a fork in the road for example and then you know exactly which road/trail to go down. Tbh though you can zoom in super close on bread crumb trail so making this type of navigational mistake would be rare. Hope this helps 🔥

You’re not wrong to be worried about this. I recently did the 268 mile spine race ultra marathon and the Garmin Fenix 7 Pro lost its GPS acquisition. On this was I could tell that something “wasn’t right” but with an arrow, a red line, and a black background I could have easily have gone off trail and got lost. During my 6 full days of running this probably happened about 8 times. I’d be completely comfortable using the 265 for 50km runs and less If a course was also marked with flags or if I had OSmaps on my phone as a back up. I think, should 50km it really pays to upgrade to something like the 965 or even the new Epic Gen2 Pro for extra piece of mind 👍🏽

Love your videos. Im looking to buy a garmin watch and have been watching various review videos. You did a video comparing the intricacies of how the software works comparing fr955 to fenix. And for some reason 955 was a lot harder to use (or less intuitive). I was just wondering if any update has helped some of these issues on the 955? Also looking at your FR265 reviews it looks like they have been resolved. Im thinking with the scrolling left and right on graphs and things like that. I'm torn between fenix 7 / FR955 or go for the amoled screens FR265. Seems like screen vs maps is the ultimate choice but the issues with the 955 put me off a little, so leaning towards FR265.
Hey mate! Thanks for the comment! There have been lots of updates since I made that video and the 955 is a much more pleasurable experience. I personally don’t think the FR265 is very good value for money.. for the same cash, I’d rather get a Suunto Race. So for value of money I would 100% recommend the 955 solar because I’ve seen it for some fantastic prices. It’s a watch you can grow with as an athlete and you won’t hit walls and ceiling like you will quickly on the 265.. when you wondering “can I do this on my watch” it will usually be a yes with the 955 and a no with the 265 🤣 You might also want to consider looking at second hand Fenix 7’s but I have had some issues with the gps tbh which has me hesitant. To round up my answer.. if you’re definitely looking at staying with Garmin I truly believe you can’t go wrong with the value for money of the 955, especially since all the updates it’s had since I released the video ❤️ Hope this helps mate, and if you have any more questions, feel free to ask 🌟

HRV is really good, I love it! .. Sleep data is questionable. The main issue is that it doesn’t track naps and because of this if you nap a lot (and therefore get lots of sleep) Garmin will calculate allllllll of your training readiness metrics off of one sleep per day which makes it not too accurate! You can upload gpx maps but these will be breadcrumb only with no "topo map" in the background which means you follow a line on.your watch. It works really well if you don't need crazy in depth navigation features.🌟

That’s a tough one Joyce! I would say I’d you want better battery life, need TOPO maps then you MUST go Fenix 7s.. however if you want a 24/7 super advanced biotracker the 265s is much more comfortable for all day wear and sleeping in. Hope this helps 🌟
The fenix is definitely a more feature rich and rugged watch which is aimed more at outdoor adventuring compared to the forerunner which is mainly oriented for running and is also lighter but does have the capability to record and be of use in other sports
If you aren't paying attention and run off course down a side street, does it give you the general direction to get back on course or a turn by turn course?
This is such a good question! To the best of my knowledge if you take a catastrophic navigational error the only aid you’ll get is a compass pointing youu back into the direction to get on-course but unfortunately I don’t think the 265 would give you turn-by-turn navigation back to the course so you’d have to remember where you messed up. Very rare that you’d mess up beyond a point of no return but definitely possible! Thanks for the awesome comment Martyn! 👊🏽🌟
@@ActiveIdeas I think I'm sold on the 265 - I was going to get the 965 just for the maps but if I can use this fell running and street running then I'm in for one.
To be honest, this isn't that impressive considering my ageing forerunner 935 can do this and the Suunto ambit 3 I once owned also. With the forerunner 245 is was a bit harder because that one doesn't have a compass and you always had to move to get the breadcrumb in the correct orientation. The 255 solved that. Really no need to spend money on a forerunner 265 for anything that is shown in this video, if you already own a slightly older mi/top range forerunner. The hard parts are with y junctions, but you notice quick enough that you deviate from the course, or when you have to decide is the turn just before the river crossing or just over.
You bring up some great points here.. I forgot the 245 didn't have a compass so this is definitely welcomed! But yeah I do agree that the 265 does fall into a very weird category of costing loads of money but not really offering any practical functional benefits over the older models.. I mean it's funny that even the 935 would give it a run for it's money.. and looking over to Coros you can save hundreds if you're not worried about turn by turn notifications. Yeah Y junctions are where issues happen.. tbh even with TOPO maps on the Fenix 7 I've taken the wrong turning many times at junctions like these (granted my hopeless with navigation). What’s your thoughts on 255 vs 265 dc rainmaker said trining readiness not coming to 255, can we convince garmin otherwise ? Overall feel of 265 vs 255 I feel like I want the training readiness but not willing to trade in the 255M the touch screen and display I don’t care for.
This is where Coros earns my respect quite frankly. I couldn’t see Coros having these types of software limits on perfectly able hardware. It’s not good for customers and it’s not good for the environment. I think if enough people rustled the feathers about it then, yes, Garmin could surely be tempted into bringing training readiness to the 255. But will this happen? I don’t think so unfortunately. Also there needs to be some incentive to spend more on the 265.. and as you’ve said here, you don’t care for the touch screen and display. I feel like many are in your position so my assumption is that Garmin knows it has to offer touch screen, display AND training readiness as the whole package 📦 Hope this helps D M 🌟

Navigation is for when you are going for a run/hike/cycle in a location which you’ve never been to before. The 265 will provide you with turn by turn navigation along with a breadcrumb trail to follow so you don’t get lost. I would say the 265 is built for gym.. although I recommend getting the 265s as it’s more comfortable for use in the gym (gets less in the way). Hope this helps 🌟
Hello from Brazil! I own the forerunner 245 and I am planning to upgrade to the 265 or 965 later this year... Probably the first price wise. In the 265, using the navigation, is it possible to zoom in and out and move the map using the touch screen or only using buttons? I also noticed that you get some elevation info during navegation, is it similar to Climbpro fearured in 965?
Hello Brazil, much love from the UK! My gut instinct is telling me that the upgrade from the 245 to the 265 isn’t worth it.. I’ve tested both watches and there really isn’t much difference (and the 265 is still pretty expensive). The 965 will be a massive upgrade, well worth actually parting cash with and the navigation is much better 👍🏽 With 265 you can only use buttons I believe 👊🏽 Yeah the full course elevation profile on the 265 is really cool but it’s not got much on ClimbPro.. which is much better for getting information on each individual climb 🌟 Hope all this has helped 🌟
@spikeweb5193 well forerunner 955 has full detail maps of the world with MIP screen and is about 50 euro more than the forerunner 265 but the 265 has amoled screen but not map detail

I’m so torn! Forerunner 265, Coros Pace 3 or Venu! I’m more of a runner/weightlifter so forerunner makes sense over Venu, but wow Venu is gorgeous!

Cheers mate! You unfortunately can't get topographical maps o the forerunner 265.. if this is essential then I highly recommend getting the 965.. such a stunning watch! The 500ft referred to the distance.. on the breadcrumb trail you're getting a "birds-eye-view" from point A to point B of your course. This 500ft means you are looking down at the route from 500ft.. you can choose to zoom in to increase the detail of the breadcrumbs trail or you can zoom out to getting a better overview. Hope that means sense bud, all the best! 🔥🌟
Could you check if lactate treshold autodetection is working on 265? No the lt test, but autodetection during activity. It's huge problem on x95 series.
Mine appears to have auto detection lactate threshold. Although for this I think you need to give an all out effort during outside running for at least 15-30 minutes whilst wearing a HR strap. All the best mate 🌟
Honestly I don't understand why they don't have the actual map shown on the display, if this had map on it It's such an easy purchase. Following a breadcrumb seems absurd while I am trying to focus on running.
Thanks for the comment 🌟Yeah unfortunately if you want an actual map you’ll have to upgrade to a forerunner 965 for that experience. Following a breadcrumb is easy and 99% of the time I’m doing that on a map anyway.. where having a map helps is when you get to a fork in the road for example and then you know exactly which road/trail to go down. Tbh though you can zoom in super close on bread crumb trail so making this type of navigational mistake would be rare. Hope this helps 🔥

You’re not wrong to be worried about this. I recently did the 268 mile spine race ultra marathon and the Garmin Fenix 7 Pro lost its GPS acquisition. On this was I could tell that something “wasn’t right” but with an arrow, a red line, and a black background I could have easily have gone off trail and got lost. During my 6 full days of running this probably happened about 8 times. I’d be completely comfortable using the 265 for 50km runs and less If a course was also marked with flags or if I had OSmaps on my phone as a back up. I think, should 50km it really pays to upgrade to something like the 965 or even the new Epic Gen2 Pro for extra piece of mind 👍🏽

Hey Stefan, Same! I’ve got the 965 coming next week, I wonder if it will steal the limelight 🤣 That was the original plan, to travel back with the reverse course feature! BUT my car failed it’s MOT 😩 So I had to use the compass 🧭 to travel back home! 😉🌟

Love your videos. Im looking to buy a garmin watch and have been watching various review videos. You did a video comparing the intricacies of how the software works comparing fr955 to fenix. And for some reason 955 was a lot harder to use (or less intuitive).
I was just wondering if any update has helped some of these issues on the 955? Also looking at your FR265 reviews it looks like they have been resolved. Im thinking with the scrolling left and right on graphs and things like that.
I'm torn between fenix 7 / FR955 or go for the amoled screens FR265. Seems like screen vs maps is the ultimate choice but the issues with the 955 put me off a little, so leaning towards FR265.
And to add, this breadcrumbs probably enough for me as will only need this navigation for hikes I might do

There have been lots of updates since I made that video and the 955 is a much more pleasurable experience. I personally don’t think the FR265 is very good value for money.. for the same cash, I’d rather get a Suunto Race.
So for value of money I would 100% recommend the 955 solar because I’ve seen it for some fantastic prices. It’s a watch you can grow with as an athlete and you won’t hit walls and ceiling like you will quickly on the 265.. when you wondering “can I do this on my watch” it will usually be a yes with the 955 and a no with the 265 🤣
You might also want to consider looking at second hand Fenix 7’s but I have had some issues with the gps tbh which has me hesitant. To round up my answer.. if you’re definitely looking at staying with
Garmin I truly believe you can’t go wrong with the value for money of the 955, especially since all the updates it’s had since I released the video ❤️

Okay sounds like FR955 could be the one then! I do get some discount at Garmin so why I was going to take advantage of that. May I ask does the solar offer anything more than the standard? Other than extra charge because of the solar?

HRV is really good, I love it! .. Sleep data is questionable. The main issue is that it doesn’t track naps and because of this if you nap a lot (and therefore get lots of sleep) Garmin will calculate allllllll of your training readiness metrics off of one sleep per day which makes it not too accurate! Hi may I ask if this 265 also able to upload mountain or trail map/route and able to navigate during the mountain hiking?
You can upload gpx maps but these will be breadcrumb only with no "topo map" in the background which means you follow a line on.your watch. It works really well if you don't need crazy in depth navigation features.🌟
I have read that you get the turn by turn info and the gpx map if you import the gpx first in garmin connect on the web. Could you confirm pls? Thank you very much.
Yes turn by turn workd.. you'll also get the gpx too which is great. There won't be a topo map background though, it'll just be blank

That’s a tough one Joyce! I would say I’d you want better battery life, need TOPO maps then you MUST go Fenix 7s.. however if you want a 24/7 super advanced biotracker the 265s is much more comfortable for all day wear and sleeping in. Hope this helps 🌟
The fenix is definitely a more feature rich and rugged watch which is aimed more at outdoor adventuring compared to the forerunner which is mainly oriented for running and is also lighter but does have the capability to record and be of use in other sports

If you aren't paying attention and run off course down a side street, does it give you the general direction to get back on course or a turn by turn course?
This is such a good question! To the best of my knowledge if you take a catastrophic navigational error the only aid you’ll get is a compass pointing youu back into the direction to get on-course but unfortunately I don’t think the 265 would give you turn-by-turn navigation back to the course so you’d have to remember where you messed up. Very rare that you’d mess up beyond a point of no return but definitely possible! Thanks for the awesome comment Martyn! 👊🏽🌟

Soooo tough... I prefer the 265. BUT my sport of ultra running I need maps so I would have to go for the 955
To be honest, this isn't that impressive considering my ageing forerunner 935 can do this and the Suunto ambit 3 I once owned also. With the forerunner 245 is was a bit harder because that one doesn't have a compass and you always had to move to get the breadcrumb in the correct orientation. The 255 solved that.
Really no need to spend money on a forerunner 265 for anything that is shown in this video, if you already own a slightly older mi/top range forerunner.
The hard parts are with y junctions, but you notice quick enough that you deviate from the course, or when you have to decide is the turn just before the river crossing or just over.
You bring up some great points here.. I forgot the 245 didn't have a compass so this is definitely welcomed! But yeah I do agree that the 265 does fall into a very weird category of costing loads of money but not really offering any practical functional benefits over the older models.. I mean it's funny that even the 935 would give it a run for it's money.. and looking over to Coros you can save hundreds if you're not worried about turn by turn notifications.
Yeah Y junctions are where issues happen.. tbh even with TOPO maps on the Fenix 7 I've taken the wrong turning many times at junctions like these (granted my hopeless with navigation).

What’s your thoughts on 255 vs 265 dc rainmaker said trining readiness not coming to 255, can we convince garmin otherwise ? Overall feel of 265 vs 255 I feel like I want the training readiness but not willing to trade in the 255M the touch screen and display I don’t care for.
This is where Coros earns my respect quite frankly. I couldn’t see Coros having these types of software limits on perfectly able hardware. It’s not good for customers and it’s not good for the environment. I think if enough people rustled the feathers about it then, yes, Garmin could surely be tempted into bringing training readiness to the 255. But will this happen? I don’t think so unfortunately. Also there needs to be some incentive to spend more on the 265.. and as you’ve said here, you don’t care for the touch screen and display. I feel like many are in your position so my assumption is that Garmin knows it has to offer touch screen, display AND training readiness as the whole package 📦 Hope this helps D M 🌟
@@ActiveIdeas yeah I agree, the upgrade should be on the hardware and should cost $40-100 more. Will training readiness make me better, NO but I like cool things even if they released it as a $40 paid option, but having no option 🖕garmin. (They are still best option IMO)

What does the navigation do? Is 265 suitable to use for gym activities?
Navigation is for when you are going for a run/hike/cycle in a location which you’ve never been to before. The 265 will provide you with turn by turn navigation along with a breadcrumb trail to follow so you don’t get lost. I would say the 265 is built for gym.. although I recommend getting the 265s as it’s more comfortable for use in the gym (gets less in the way). Hope this helps 🌟
Hello from Brazil! I own the forerunner 245 and I am planning to upgrade to the 265 or 965 later this year... Probably the first price wise.
In the 265, using the navigation, is it possible to zoom in and out and move the map using the touch screen or only using buttons?
I also noticed that you get some elevation info during navegation, is it similar to Climbpro fearured in 965?
Hello Brazil, much love from the UK! My gut instinct is telling me that the upgrade from the 245 to the 265 isn’t worth it.. I’ve tested both watches and there really isn’t much difference (and the 265 is still pretty expensive). The 965 will be a massive upgrade, well worth actually parting cash with and the navigation is much better 👍🏽
With 265 you can only use buttons I believe 👊🏽
Yeah the full course elevation profile on the 265 is really cool but it’s not got much on ClimbPro.. which is much better for getting information on each individual climb 🌟
