@@sethputnamsghost He left Suffocation in 1994, then returned in 2003 and left again in 2012. So, yeah. He left the band for the first time almost 30 years ago.😁
I think the man is a legend but I’ll still go see a suffocation show any day of the week and I dont give a fuck if it’s a work day; suffocation shows are a party! I have few shows that can compete with what I’ve seen suffocation continue to do! You can’t beat the people that have worked with that band or tour with them, honestly, just total talent!
I love this guy , Mike is not only one of the true innovators of true death metal (along with cats like Pete Sandoval , Gene hoglin and Paul from Cannibal corpse just to name a few) and he is also a very intelligent and interesting man to listen to play and talk
Cannibal Corpse created Grindcore they weren't one of the originators of Death Metal. DEATH and SUFFOCATION were the first bands to start doing it. Morbid Angel came like a year after these 2.

I used to take drum lessons from him. Dude was the coolest guy ever. Used to stay later than I was supposed to just so we could talk about his whole career!
This man, knows hes a bad ass, he knows hes an innovator, hes seen the world. But what an honest soul, a humble, approachable human being. One of the many positive attributes that makes hime great
You know when you see something and you think that looks easy to do, till you try it? Mike's drumming looks hard till you try it, then it's impossible! The best Artist/drummer out there.
+Aaron Duckett Comments are opinions. There are no facts. Your response should be who you think is the best drummer out there. This way comparisons or similarities can be discussed. I my opinion on the 1000 of so drummers that I've heard Mike Smith is THE BEST ARTIST/DRUMMER OUT THERE! Do you have a fact on a drummer....... NO YOU DON'T
+Pete Patsa my favorite drummers are Gene Hoglan, Sean Reinert, and Richard Christy. They all know dynamics, taste, grooves, ghost notes, and polyrhythms. I've never really appreciated drummers who literally only do fast shit. I'm not saying that's what mike does, because he's great, I'm just saying I'd be more impressed if he would incorporate more dynamics into his drumming.
I got that from an interview he did, that I read. I have seen Slayer, (sadly not w Dave,) But I DID see Grip Inc., but couldn't see his feet from the floor. I will have to say, I am second guessing what I read.....I don't like to pass misinformation. T/Y...Mike H.
Bob Mac Drummers like these prob are able to employ both techniques. I was able to play better blast beats when I was able to alternate hands on the snare/ride snare/high hat. being ambidextrous helps.
Mike Smith is definitely one of my huge influences as being a drummer myself. Suffocation pierced from within was the first death metal album I’ve listened to and i still love it to this day! Such a nice guy and a tank of a drummer!😈💥🤘
Mike wasn't in the band when they did Pierced. Doug Bohn played on that record. Seeing their live performances after they reunited you can see how incredible the songs from that album sound with Mike behind the kit
Dude, I didnt know Mike wasnt on PIERCED for a while as well! Lol. I was just watching this thinking " Pierced was cool as hell, too bad Mike wasnt on it..." and then I saw your comment. Suffocation has had great drummers, but Mike Smith is the best.
Mike is a Legend . He created the Hammer blast, he is also very groovy ! Some say the hammer blast is a Cannibal Corpse thing , I think it’s a Mike Smith thing ! Mikes thing is keeping a powerful snare with his blast beats instead of letting the double bass over power it !
met your sister mike, working with her down here in Florida... Big shot out, I am and have been a fan for years, your sister brought me here and can't believe I have the unique experience of training and working with one of your family members man, big damn deal entering the hall of fame and loving this vid. peace
This reminds me to the old Wretched and their first album "The Exodus Of An Autonomy" which is great cause it's one of the best albums I've heard in my life. I want to listen the whole thing asap. Amazing work.
Mike inspired me to move my ride cymbal to the left side, it's back to the other side now but that was really helpful for making my left arm get its act together so I was a better player overall.
I wanted Mike to have come to Japan as a member of "Suffocation" in 2019 ... I watched the live of "Suffocation," but I'm sorry for Mike's not having come to Japan.
there's no lacking confidence, that's for sure. I respect his musicianship for sure, and I have no problems with him taking the credit or recognition for being great--he's totally earned it
Thanks Mike...I've looked up to you and your drumming for mad long and i never got a chance to be in a band that got me on stage...but all the studying and analyzing i did kept me motivated and true to the craft and now i make a living teaching drums so ill never sweat that fact my projects never worked out....I've been rockin the stage of education for 10 years and that shit is priceless...cheers
He’s one of the best drummers. Would love to see him back in Suffocation again. It’s not the same without him.
Did he quit? Totally agree, Mike is one of the absolute best.🤘
I dig the newer material but Mikes work along with the previous members is hard to top

Mike should seriously consider writing a book about his experience in the music biz. I like how he tends to analyze things and come up with patterns.
Miss this guy ( Mike smith ) ..
Mike's tone and ability is amazing..
One of my favorite drummers. I love his podcast too
Mike Smith is the truth.
I've always been more of an Immolation guy when it comes to NYDM but I can't deny this dude is a monster.
So sick. I love Mikes feel on this track, and other stuff he’s played on.
