  • A full cycle clip of the recently restored Bendix Gyromatic washer!
    This Bendix was recently restored after sitting idle for decades. A ton of hours went into the tear down, parts cleaning, parts sourcing, and reassembly of this fine US made appliance. While not as flashy as other washing machines from the same era, Bendix was the leading pioneer in automatic laundry and continued to produce a wonderful product through the 1950's. By the turn of the decade Philco had bought Bendix from Avco and dramatically changed up the laundry appliance offering, dropping the stand-alone front load washer after the 1958 model year. This particular Bendix example is quite possibly one of the only functioning Gyromatic washers running today.
    Make sure to watch through the end for bonus clips of the machine at work from the rear, with the back panel off. • 1955 Bendix Gyromatic ...

    This is the way today's front load washers should work. My parents had a top of the line Kenmore modern front loader, and it was bad. They didn't like it and I'll never have one, unless it's like this Bendix! Great video!

    I was born in the year this was made/sold. Beautiful styling was everywhere, clothing, hair styles, even appliances. 👍🏻

    These were known for having the toughest build quality of their time. It’s a shame that more of the population at the time didn’t appreciate front loaders because Bendix machines were made like anvils. The outer tubs and inner baskets were made of unbelievably thick gauge steel. When I was very young we still had the original Model S bolted to the cement foundation in our house. Anyone who ever had one spoke about washers of twenty and fifty years ago the way that we speak of today’s washers in comparison to their old Bendix washers saying they’d never have another washer like it.

    Great Post.. If front load washers were made like this today, they would be a hot commodity. Even with the one way tumbling it does a good job throwing the clothes in and out of the water . And it uses water. not like these new models which washes a full load of clothes in a teaspoon of water. The washtub tumble speed is good too.

    If you could get your hands on a 1959 whirlpool dishwasher, I'd like to hear and see it running.

    I remember when these BENDIX WASHERS were very popular in coin operated Laundromats. I remember too there was a sign above these machines in the Laundromats to use 1/3 cup Low Sudsing Detergent.

    I guess Bendix decided to remove the "slow spin" feature when this was made.. My grandmother had the 1947 model and we had a 1953 "Duomatic". I know the Duomatic had a slow spin that shifted to a "high speed" spin.

      The original Bendix transmission was a 2 speed friction clutch mechanism, used on all of their bolt down domestic washers from 1937 through 1955, all Gyromatic washers (including this one) from 1948 through 1958, commercial machines from the late 40's through mid 50's, and a few 1960 and 1961 model Philco-Bendix Duomatics.
      The three speed torque spring transmission you mention was originally designed for and used on all Duomatics from 1953 through 1959, and then on most commercial applications from the late 50's through the early 90's Dexter machines. Most Philco Duomatics from the 1960's used a modified Duomatic 3 speed transmission that provided two speeds (tumble and spin) as well as a solenoid driven blower drive, via the jack shaft.

    I thought they switched turning...flopped the clothes back & forth? This one goes one direction, balling the sheets together.

    You will find everything in a big tangled ball inside that fitted sheet.

      I think the basket is large enough to avert this. Later in the cycle it looked like other articles were escaping. An old Westinghouse washing machine my parents had up through the early 60s worked similarly. It had a scale built into the door to avert overfilling.

    What year did front loaders exist?

    • @swestoyz
      @swestoyz  Год назад +6

      Bendix introduced the Bendix Home Laundry in the fall of 1937. It was the first fully automatic washer introduced in the world, and was the first front loader made.
