To be fair, Da Vinci painted over his own paintings, often over the course of decades. He rarely considered anything “ finished”.

    • @tateroberts8113
      @tateroberts8113 3 года назад +52

He also had his pupils paint most of his paintings.... most of da Vinci art was not done by his hand

He was also extremely lazy. Thats why

    • @garyleewebb

@@chaningdodson4245 Painting really didn't psy the bills. At the time, someone working with their hands was considered a craftsman, like a bricklayer., carpenter, etc. Therefore, few signed their work.. But some could see Leonardo was special, adored by kings.
Leonsrdo sought commissions to pay the bills, but the real money was in designing machines of war.
People mistake laziness for overactive mind, Leonardo had too many thoughts and research to do than spend it in front of a canvas/block/wall. The Last Supper, for example, has an anecdotal account. Leonardo comes riding into the workplace in a world wind, climbs the scaffolding, makes a mark, then immediately leaves, not to return for weeks.
Also, Leonardo painted with his hands, so experts have his fingerprints. A student painting at his workshop might have the master Leonardo visit the work in progress, and add a touch (correction) with his own hands, so technically it becomes a collaboration and therefore a Leonardo work of art.
Restorers today don't paint over originals. Restorers of the past may have, but only if there were damages. What covers the painting is centuries of grime, soot, mold, etc. Plus the original varnish. Varnish was usually applied as a protective layer on paintings, but UV radiation discolors it over the years.
Salvador Mundi was a popular motif, and many artists and art studios took a stab at it. There is a written record that Leonardo did one, and perhaps a second. Also that his favorite pupil did a copy of Leonardo's while he had access to it.
Misattribution s a reason works of art are "discovered"centuries later. The were pined to another artist by mistake.

When these old masters were originally painted, the paint was flat and dull until they were varnished. That was the last step in the process. The varnish made the colors pop and also protected the painting.
Over time the varnish would darken and get covered with smoke and dust until the painting could hardly be seen. Then it would be time to carefully clean off the old varnish, touch up any worn or damaged areas and revarnish. For a 500 year old picture this may have been done 3 or 4 times, maybe more. The painting may have suffered more or less damage depending on how it was stored and displayed and how skillful the restorations were over the years. This one was in bad condition and required a lot of careful work.

    • @nelsonx5326

Varnish kind of harmonizes the surface. The different colors were made from different substances, and would reflect the light differently because of texture of the substances. It's works a little like this...
Imagine a clear jar filled with broken clear glass. The various facets of the broken glass scatter the light it reflects. In the jar the broken glass looks white. Pour water into the jar of broken glass and it becomes clear because the light is no longer reflected as scattered.

Honestly this is how all major paintings from history are. They have been repainted, small details, large details, over the centuries by so many differently people. And the person "restoring" it is honestly just doing the same thing. With the technology we have, x rays, we can see through the painting and like Joe said, see the layers. But the restoration isn't just wiping off recent layers. That's not usually possible for the entire painting. So people do what others have for centuries... They repaint over it, but usually with the original in mind, and try to as closely as possible match the latest layer to that.

A group of people make a painting to resemble Leo's work and have it be the male version of probably the most famous painting ever because that'll obviously get attention. Sell it for 1,175 because that's good easy money for a painting scam. The painting gets lost throughout time with its many owners, and now it got to a place in time where its surrounded by people who think it's real...word gets around now the masses believe it's real. Well Joe,
when a painting is restored, nobody just paints over it. The restaurateur (in this case a lady named Dianne Modestini) uses a few steps to restore the original.
One needs to know first, that most painters finish a painting with varnish. If the painting is than later painted over, you have already 3 layers. one color, one varnish and another layer of color.
In the case of the Salvator Mundi (thats what the painting is called) had 4 layers. The first 2 were easy to remove, since they were relatively new.
The 3rd layer was an old varnish, which can be removed using a certain chemical that doesn't affect the actual painting. Tecnically we'd have to say the painting had 5 layers since it was overpainted partially by DaVinci himself. The thumb was painted twice and changed in ankle. The brosche in the middle was moved further to the left.
How ever, the restaurateur now only partially enhanced the existing colors. This happens with a magnifying glas and lot's of time. 6 years she took to finish this one. Now, when you look close at the painting, you'll see little cracklings. The original color had been breaking into a billion pieces when the oil had dryed out. Al these little pieces are treated individually. Thos keeping the look and appearance. But the colors are enhanced and brought to better light.
After all a fresh warnish will be applied.
Oh ans, I don't think there is any controversy. More than 100 experts in the field of DaVinci classification, restauration and analytica have agreed that it's the masters hand who has been painting this. The resamblance to the hair of St John the Baptist in every possible way. Shading, tone, tecnique, brush stroke, depth and so on. This is most likely an original.

I, and few others in this world know this to be true. But because we are so few, and very far between, normally we find it's useless to speak about these things in public fora, as most people would be too ignorant or intellectually incompetent to understand. That is not to say that we understand, though some of us may, it is instead to say that we are at least aware of an underlying implication in Da Vinci's works (as well as Michaelangelo and a few others) that is not immediately obvious, but hidden, and to be discovered by those with the faculties to discover. That said, though I may disagree with our like inviting the greater public fora to insights not readily seen, it is refreshing to find a taller structure (such as yourself) here and there on the topography of awareness, where all else stands flat and ignorant.

The Mona Lisa is Leonardo Da Vinci when he was young. Also it's actually about 4 paintings each one is a mathematical code and all layers are part of the code. That's how freaking smart he was. By far no one comes close to how smart he was. Remember the artificial heart is his invention. Also the tank he wrote many books many was destroyed. When he was dying he was trying to finish writing a book. He had a favor to flight. It is said when he was child in the crib and bird landed on his face and that's where has passion or obsession with flight came from

That is not the only crazy thing about this. The painting was so expensive because SA and UAE outbid each other thinking that the other party is Qatar, and they didn't want Qatar to get the painting because they were in dispute back then.

I think its PARTLY by Da Vinci; like he showed a student how to do hair. EITHER WAY, it is not worth this much money lol. Also, "he might be peeing on it right now" got me. I laughed my ass off there.

there was a civil war era artist who got busted for painting 5 dollar bills that looked better then the real thing. his paintings eventually sold for insane amounts. he was essentially making a painting to sell for 5$ in the same amount of time it would take him to make one to sell for ...i don't know insert insane amount of money lol. i like to accurate as posable. there is a good lession for selling yourself short here.

    NO.
These art forgers CAN create beautiful original art BUT they realized that they can sell forged/copied art for at least 10 times the price of their originals.
So they made it a point to focus on copies than originals.

the scan is some type of digital spectral scan done by believe somebody from Sweden or Switzerland that invented it. I'm pretty sure it's the same guy that I was allowed to scam the Mona Lisa and discovered the headdress pins, change in hand can a few other things that were never discovered. Andrew graham-dixon has a great series on it. There's actually three Mona Lisa's, the original, one in st. Petersburg and one in a vault in Asia. She was the wife of a gentleman that did business with Leonardo's father and lived across the street

The only thing more baller than showing off a painting and saying it’s by DaVinci, is showing someone a painting and casually saying “idk, it might be DaVinci, they’re not really sure lol.”
Then that person knows you spent millions on a “maybe” and aren’t even sweating it

to restore a painting they remove all layers to get to the original artists work, then they apply a clear layer to protect it, and then the restoration is done on the clear layer, which can be easily removed if it ever needs to be with a chemical that wont damage the original painting.

I make my living as a fine artist. Restoration is suppose to be extremely limited now... just a few touch ups here and there. They dont apply full layers over the existing paint anymore like they use to. a hundred years ago many paintings were destroyed by restoration because some idiot would just try repainting the painting over the top with fresher colors. Now days we make it easier for future conservators by writing our colors and varnish on the back and a bit about the process we used so if someone needs to touch up some spots they can.
