He's a special type of genius. Not sure his music is saving lives, or helping move us towards world peace, but he is one dude that has brought us decades of great music, and never really repeats himself. He's a master of many genres of music, and is a genius doing so.
I love Beck and I love this album!!! The song Dark Places in particular gets stuck in my head all day long. I wish I could meet Beck and shake his hand or give him a hug because since I've discovered him 5 years ago I've been able to use his music to keep me sane through the everyday bullshit life can be. He's got something to fit whatever mood I'm in from day to day and it never gets old to me. THAT is art. He's so underrated and underappreciated for his awesomeness, but that's what makes him awesome and as though he's my secret weapon, because he's not overblown or wrecked by over popularity. Beck didn't "sell out" because he used a trap beat on one song on the album. In my eyes, what makes Beck, Beck is that he truly is a chameleon of sound. Putting his entire discography on shuffle is more diverse and more wild of a ride than most of the Alt/Rock playlists curated by Spotify and Apple nowadays anyways.

Beck just has a different genre on every album. That has really allowed him to stay fresh for these 25+ years. He's not an artist where he has stayed the exact same style, drifted away from it for 2 or 3 albums where fans have complained that it doesn't sound like him. I love super hard rocking stuff (Mellow Gold, Odelay, Guero), his upbeat funk/pop/synth-pop (Midnite Vultures, Colors, Hyperspace), his mellower indie rock (Mutations, Modern Guilt), and his slower melancholy folk/rock (Sea Change (My favorite Beck album), and Morning Phase) and even his weirder pre-Mellow Gold stuff. Although One Foot in the Grave is a masterclass from him!

Oof. I’ve been a Beck fan since ‘94. I still am but this new album is wretched. It’s a higher quality version of every other top 40 corporate bullshit “album” that gets released. Beck used to rebel, putting out albums like Sea Change after Midnight Vultures and Mutations after Odelay. This album is nothing more than an artsy and trippy version of what everyone else is doing. Fuck record companies.
Jonathan Leitch 1000%wrong. Beck can make whatever he wants. You think he’s trying to make hits? This album is just as great as any of his other albums. He can’t make sea change or guero over and over again. He’s always evolving. Chemical and stratosphere are fantastic tracks and very melodic. You’re trying to put him into a box. Watch him talk about the songs. He’s genuinely excited and proud of them. Not all of his art has to be low-fi and rebellious because that’s what he initially got known for.
Anybody who really dug this album may want to check out a UK / Brexit artist called Tim Please. He also sells sounds he designed on various synths. I've been trying to get him to write me an album for years but he's very hard to get a hold of now. I didn't have money or a lot of it when I found out he writes music. By the time I did. He vanished. Seriously go check out his stuff lol.
