Paywalling the biggest competitive races is the worst decision that UCI has ever made - killing the visibility of the sport for new spectators, and ruining the experience for fans alike.

We did notice canned landing noise. Like if someone stepped into a bowl full of wet gravel. The racing was awesome, the broadcast was terrible. No new MTB fans were attracted to the sport this weekend.

Isn't NEP who is doing the live broadcast at the worldcups? NEP is the largest television production company in the world, but maybe the world champs is another company.
Being broadcasted on the national tv channel here in Belgium, my grandma ended up watching it all. The Belgian commentator did his best but the whole thing was lacking pure fanboy energy. Grandma found the race exciting though. That’s a new fan right here
They also piped in heavy breathing noises for Bruni's run and a couple others when they were up high on course and being filmed by a drone with ZERO cameras anywhere near the riders 😂
Love the fact that both Andreas and Charlie won their first World Cups this year at their home tracks 🤩 Victory couldn't possibly be sweeter for those guys! So awesome.

@@jptothetree its not a technicality, its two different things. Some people will say winning a world cup overall is better than a world championship, but there is no doubt that the world championship is above any individual world cup race. Because nobody will remember which world cup races he will eventually win, but everybody will know he is the world champion - and where and how he won it (last but not least for the rainbow stripes on his sleeves and collar even after he cant wear the jersey at races anymore). 😊

UCI deserves criticism for doing the exact opposite of what's claimed in their mission statement. Restricting the availability of the live broadcast and third party content creation is not how you promote and expand a sport. It's turning passionate fans away with limited outlets to attract new fans, not to mention the low level of energy and passion in the booth which isn't helping. They expect people to pay for something that isnt as fun and exiting anymore. Manufacturers are no longer getting the exposure they got as a return on investment, so expect to see shrinking pits, smaller teams, and lower salaries for those that survive the cut backs. I only ride a dirt jumper, but the reason i bought a commencal was because their downhill team and their bikes are so damn sexy. nohomo
the riders get less than 3000 per race, heard that on the ride companion.

@@ErichVonCartmann what didn't grow? The entire mtb industry has grown exponentially since redbull first started broadcasting World Cup races for free. If these are the times we live in, redbull's approach was from the future.

1) Growth - Maybe it just grew in your little circle and inside your head? If it grew, then why is sponsorship down? Do you see any "non bike" sponsors such a Citroen Cars or AG Insurance like you do in Road Bicycle Racing or MotoGP? You do NOT because the general population really does NOT cares about DH Racing. Heck, most Mountain Bikers don't even care about Bicycle Racig of any sorts, much less DH Mountain Bike Racing.
2) There is NO profit when we offer stuff for free - What gain is there in offering stuff for free? Just about all Sporting Events these days, we have to pay to watch. Very few sports are offered for free over "broadcast TV". The honest truth is there are just NOT many people interested in DH Mountain Biking, and those who really want to see it LIVE will just have to pay for it.
Now outside of the USA, I do hear in Spain that even the Spaniards have to pay to watch Real Madrid and Barcelona Soccer, as well as MotoGP.
These are the times we are living in, my friend! BTW, don't get mad at me, I have no control in any of this. I, too, would rather watch stuff for free instead of paying for it!

Thanks Ben. This is all I got to see of the event in NZ. I paid for GCN+ as I will gladly pay to watch these races, but I still didn't get to see it. Very grumpy. Keep up the great work. love the videos.
I paid for gcn+ too. Wasnt even on sky in NZ. wont be paying for GCN+ next year.

I watched on Discovery+ because I couldn't get BBC stream anywhere, It was Ric and Neil Donoghue commentating. I noticed that jump noise on the drone footage, I wondered if it was a weird directional mic with some sort of ducking on so everytime the mic was triggered by the jump landing it just let through a weird noise, surely they didnt actively put those noises on

No arguments that Cathro is the best, but I don’t think he fits the category of RUclipsr. I know you meant this with all of the best intentions but he deserves more than the designation of RUclipsr. He’s a presenter, team manager, racer (when healthy), coach and everything in between.

It's time DH ditched the UCI and does their own thing , maybe hook up with Redbull again or do an expanded Crankworx series.

In practise that might have unfortunate flow-on effects on developmental funding at National levels. Not sure if it is similar in other countries (it probably is) but in Australia, funding from the national bodies of sport towards elite cycling (of all disciplines) is targeted only at Olympics and World Championships. Even if World Cup (or whatever it became) moved away, the World Championships will probably always remain with UCI for political reasons.
Totally agree. Get some money to these riders who put their lives on the line. Make the events something special. The sport needs a Supercross type of injection
World Cup downhill is the most competitive and exciting it has ever been. The coverage is absolute garbage now :(. I can’t stand it.

For all Rob Warners gaffs he always added fuel to the commentary, now thats been replaced with wet flannels
While RedBull coverage was not perfect I liked that almost all riders were shown on same parts of the track and using very simmilar camra angles, I could see different people taking different lines, and I could judge the speed between different riders because I could see them all in same places. It made me feel it more if that makes sense. I feel now like it is a bit all over the place, riders are shown in random places, the google map view from up high makes no sense to me, you cannot really see what is going on from that. You do not feel it as much you cannot judge it from seeing and comparing the riders you have wait for split times or hear comentators saying somethig about the run. Its like you could almost treat it like radio transmission cause the video is kind of disconnectied. And yes while current comentators and not bad at all in my opinnion Rob and the crew from RedBull I think were better.

Hoping Crankworx takes over DH racing so we can all watch and cheer on our sport. Seems like the sponsors aren't getting the value of paying for competitions without viewers. Here we are excitedly listening to Cathro talk us through the race like a radio broadcaster rather than watching in super high definition. Crazy!!

Mate I noticed the canned audio straight away and I wish I hadn't. I ended up complaining about it all the way through. Much to my wife's delight.... What a bizzare choice! The bikes are almost silent these days and they're trying to make it sound like it's 20 years ago. So strange. Anyway good video dude that's a nice roundup 🤘🏼

Yep. Bruni's run especially. Drone 100 feet in the air the only filming and you hear heavy breathing for 30 seconds 😊
Thanks for acknowledging some of the issues with the broadcasting, it was poor in so many respects, and that's if you weren't watching on the official UCI live stream which got taken down with no warning or explanation part way through the women's race (and had inexcusably bad sound and video quality). I was expecting to miss Rob's commentary but there was so much more than just that which was wrong with the broadcasting and race setup
I got took down cause everyone was slating them in the live chat! (I reckon)
Fair play withstanding the midges. Anyone who hasn't experienced the midges on a Scottish summer evening might not understand, but it's like Chinese water torture or something!

Such a shame, living in the USA got to see absolutely zero of the world champs in my home country, shocking coverage or lack thereof. Same with the World Cup, really a pity Red Bull don’t have it.

Thought the bbc might at least send a presenter to the venue, but they didn't. Instead we got the wise words of National Treasure Claire Balding and Chris Boardman in Glasgow. Neither know much about DH.

Coverage? In the UK, I had the choice of watching three ways: on Eurosport, on GCN+, and on the BBC.
Were they using canned heavy breathing aswell? I noticed the strange bike noises! What a shambolic mess! The coverage is shocking so much that i watched it on the bbc and thats sayin something.
The first race of the season that I've tried watching on bbc, but lost my interest quite quickly as the broadcast was such low quality, so had it on the background. Red bull were amazing at making the sport exciting 💔
The commentary was absolutely terrible, overall this years full commentary has been poor, very very poor and that's also missing out how poor the live stream was too. 20 years ago it was better than it was yesterday.
The sound thing of the bikes landing on the motorway was so weird...

I too was annoyed by this. I know Glasgow was hosting other bike disciplines this weekend but this was not one of them. The coverage was lack-lustre at best. This is the first year in 12 that I've not actually been there and I was shocked at how poor the TV coverage was.

yeah bike noises had me wrinkling my brow through the whole race, very weird.
The broadcast was terrible! They need more cameras on the track, perhaps @Redbull TV can hire them some. Coverage of crankworx 💯 better than this broadcast.
They had plenty of cameras they just didn't give enough riders air time, especially the women's. It was criminal that the last five got time for slow mo repeats whilst some of the earlier top women only got their start box and motorway section.
The gaps were too narrow until the last 20, but they could have shown other spots, rather than just the start hut and then the motorway.
Please can anyone tell me which country the livestream is available in?

The racing was amazing! The production was fkng terrible! .. From NZ i used a VPN to watch the Juniors on BBC & the elites on SBS Australia.. It was beyond amazing to see the Kiwi junior women clean sweep the podium! But i was gutted we didn't even see Poppy Lane's run, & barely any really of Sasha Earnest or Erice Van Luven.. But what i did see the commentary sounded as exciting as watching retiree lawn bowls..
The angles were terrible, the lazy drone shots from up high of the entire section from beginning to the woods, showing none of the technical sections in between.. Yes i noticed the canned "bike noises".. And the UCI "interviewer" at the end, after the medals, scalding the riders to complete their "obligations".. No stoke, no passion, no connection.. The elites didn't even have a traditional champagne celebration like in every freaking racing sport.. Seriously, what the fk are the UCI up to? It's like they're jealous of the attention Downhill has been getting relative to the mass-commercial attention road cycling gets.. And they're going out of their way to make downhill less popular by removing the excitement, & making it harder for fans to watch..
Seriously fk the UCI.. Downhill MTB needs to split away ASAP.. The sport is amazing, the riders & the fans, but the muppets who have taken it hostage are going to ruin it's appeal..

No I didn't watch it actually. Money is tight and spending on watching mountain biking for only a few months is not good enough. I really really miss it but just can't afford it ATM. I was annoyed no one posted a highlight recap until uci 2 days later 🙈 terrible for People who missed it.

gotta say this, this is the start of the worst era in downhill broadcasting. they should just leave downhill to redbull. take XC enduro and everyother thing to discovery.

UCI can eat it. No clips, cant figure out how to even find footage of elite finals, let along live stream it when it was actually on (Aussie). I hear people who paid for streaming on GCN *still* couldn't watch it due to geoblocking. Plus.. the weird added sound effects (seriously, wtf) and.. debatable.. commentating? 🤦

I stopped watching the ( not live) stream because of pathetic coverage of runs, canned bike noises & crap commentary. Those2 should have been commentating on the Tour De France.

Sorry Ben but this is not the place where all the difference was made and time saved - it might have split the top three but between split 1 and 2 most riders outside the top 3 were dumping at least 3 seconds - that was the real story but no mention or focus in your piece - is it because it was simpler just to talk about one corner where you happen to have had cameras during practice for B-roll and the BBC had a static camera so you could measure the splits? - with analysis this sloppy you could work for Discovery plus.
