40 years ago, when I was merely 17, I thought this was one of the most heart breaking songs I'd ever heard... now, after having truly experienced the loss of love, I know it's the most heart breaking song I'll ever hear.
Yes, it's heartbreaking for me too, it brings the tears. 40 years ago when this song was popular, I was 29 and she was 21 we met and fell in love. We didn’t recognize it as ‘love’ and went our separate ways, meeting again years later, but still not realizing what we had. Now I’m 70 and she’s 62 and we finally know that it was the love of a lifetime, but we both belong to someone else. This song continues to haunt me, beautiful, yet bittersweet.

My wife and I attended a Lightfoot concert in Chicago back in the day. Later that evening he and some of his crew arrived incognito at Mother's, one of the first singles bars ever. It's still there as The “Original” Mother's. When told we had been at the concert he was very congenial and shared his drink, tequila and beer, with my wife. After all these years he's still on the road. God speed, Gordon, you're one of my favorite things about Canada.

I can relate to this song in my failed marriage. Failed is not really the right word, more like what he says, " I don't know where we went wrong, but the feelings gone, and I just can't get it back". Perfectly describes what happened........
I can definitely relate to that. This song tells a story like no other, and it really strikes me right in the heart. The love of my life and I split up after 8 years spending every single day together and it was the hardest thing I ever had to go through, but we've become friends again after a few years apart and I think everything is okay. She's with a new man, married, with a new baby, and it all makes me feel quite inadequate, but I guess some things aren't always meant to work out.

I speak with tears in my eyes as I listen to this, one of the most beautiful songs written by Anyone, and this guy has a gift! Had I not stumbled across G.L. 's Blue Album in the basement of a rental I moved into, I don't know if I ever would have run across this gifted man' music. Living in the car for a year and a half now and cd player taking a dump on me, I am musically deprived, and songs like these old ones I have loved so much make me cry.

Few songwriters can write something this poignant today and have a hit with it. I am sure they are out there somewhere, they just haven't found the muse that Gordon Lightfoot had. One of the greatest songs ever written. Maybe you have to be like Lightfoot, Nick Drake, or Shane McGowan (The Pogues) and actually live the song first. Another one of those addicted souls who manages to write lovely melodies despite his own hardships and transcends it. This song actually punctuates time...and it brings you back to it.

it's ironic you should say that because i felt like that when some friends were going through divorce and some other stuff was going on. the other two songs that applied to me personally was a song called Operator and an old country song called Angels Don't Lie. sorry you had to go through the pain. watching it up close second hand was enough for me. sadly i learned a lesson that sometimes it isn't just about who gets the home, the kids, the money ect. it's who gets to keep the friends, or in my case can the friends keep you. i was still friends with the two people involved and everyone else wanted me to chose a side and i wouldn't, and the two people involved never asked me to. i would up with a broken heart and a concussion.l also found out that people i though i knew could turn into someone else really quick

Daniel Neal I completely agree! as you said, music used to sooth and relax. or bring some atmosphere when you're with your wife/girl friend. and people used to sound different. different styles. now everybody sounds exactly the same, which is to say bad. they all think that being loud, and stretching a "note" out for twenty minutes makes them a good singer. and I haven't heard anybody in a very long time that sounds the same live, as they do on the record. or the cd or whatever. when Elvis sang in concert, it sounded nearly identical to the record. plus you can't even understand anything they're saying. and then when you do, like you said, it's full of filth!

(something like that), it doesn't remove the pain, which is good, because pain is a great teacher. I feel that it show us all our worth, when we look in the mirror, every day, and make it less likely to try to avoid it, so we see who we really are. Simply unforgettable. The lyrics are as heartfelt now as they were when the song was first released all those years ago; the guitar music is the icing on the cake for me. I could hear this song again and again and never tire of it.
I can still remember my Dad taking me to see Gordon Lightfoot in 1973 at the Ontario Place Forum when I was just 8 years old. The stage was round and rotated once every 30 minutes so everyone got a good view from the 2500 seats and 8000 grass "seats". Amazing sound system. I saw The Parachute Club, Triumph and Chris Kristofferson play there. I remember so clearly the feeling of the grass under my feet and the smell of grass in the air. Much simpler times.

I speak with tears in my eyes as I listen to this, one of the most beautiful songs written by Anyone, and this guy has a gift! Had I not stumbled across G.L. 's Blue Album in the basement of a rental I moved into, I don't know if I ever would have run across this gifted man' music. Living in the car for a year and a half now and cd player taking a dump on me, I am musically deprived, and songs like these old ones I have loved so much make me cry.

1220sassy you must be my age or older. wish all kids, including my neices, could have grown up in a place where you never locked up anything(for many years) and you could go all over town and never be afraid of being snached, car jacked , sold drugs ect. I was sooo LUCKY

My grandson is 6. Just breaks my heart that he will never experience those times. (sorry for sounding sappy)

Few songwriters can write something this poignant today and have a hit with it. I am sure they are out there somewhere, they just haven't found the muse that Gordon Lightfoot had. One of the greatest songs ever written. Maybe you have to be like Lightfoot, Nick Drake, or Shane McGowan (The Pogues) and actually live the song first. Another one of those addicted souls who manages to write lovely melodies despite his own hardships and transcends it. This song actually punctuates time...and it brings you back to it.

it's ironic you should say that because i felt like that when some friends were going through divorce and some other stuff was going on. the other two songs that applied to me personally was a song called Operator and an old country song called Angels Don't Lie. sorry you had to go through the pain. watching it up close second hand was enough for me. sadly i learned a lesson that sometimes it isn't just about who gets the home, the kids, the money ect. it's who gets to keep the friends, or in my case can the friends keep you. i was still friends with the two people involved and everyone else wanted me to chose a side and i wouldn't, and the two people involved never asked me to. i would up with a broken heart and a concussion.l also found out that people i though i knew could turn into someone else really quick
there was something very unique and special about 70's soft rock. there's never been anything like it, and sadly when our generation is gone, nobody will remember what real music sounded like

Daniel Neal I completely agree! as you said, music used to sooth and relax. or bring some atmosphere when you're with your wife/girl friend. and people used to sound different. different styles. now everybody sounds exactly the same, which is to say bad. they all think that being loud, and stretching a "note" out for twenty minutes makes them a good singer. and I haven't heard anybody in a very long time that sounds the same live, as they do on the record. or the cd or whatever. when Elvis sang in concert, it sounded nearly identical to the record. plus you can't even understand anything they're saying. and then when you do, like you said, it's full of filth!
Daniel Neal I totally agree with everything you said. this younger generation(s) are the most coddled people ever to walk the earth! they are offended by everything. they think they deserve anything, and everything they want, without lifting a finger to earn it. they would never have survived life in our day. hell, they have to have water from a bottle. we used to drink it out of the hose that had been sitting in the sun all day! my brother, sister, and me all rode from Seattle to north Dakota in a van with no seats! kids today have to have a dvd player, and video games to go 50 miles! everything has just gotten insane

I feel that it show us all our worth, when we look in the mirror, every day, and make it less likely to try to avoid it, so we see who we really are.
It's songs like this that bring me back to the happy times we had, and I shed a tear for that, not because it's gone, but because I was lucky enough to be loved.

A freezing cold night in the winter of 1972, seeing Gordon at Boston's Symphony Hall, memories of long ago.

Simply unforgettable. The lyrics are as heartfelt now as they were when the song was first released all those years ago; the guitar music is the icing on the cake for me. I could hear this song again and again and never tire of it.
I can still remember my Dad taking me to see Gordon Lightfoot in 1973 at the Ontario Place Forum when I was just 8 years old. The stage was round and rotated once every 30 minutes so everyone got a good view from the 2500 seats and 8000 grass "seats". Amazing sound system. I saw The Parachute Club, Triumph and Chris Kristofferson play there.
I remember so clearly the feeling of the grass under my feet and the smell of grass in the air.
Much simpler times.
